Arsenal flop is fast becoming an even more pointless signing than Gyokeres

The mood around the club might not be ideal at the moment, but this season is still shaping up to be a historic one for Arsenal.

Sure, Mikel Arteta’s side aren’t in the best of form, but they’ve had to deal with an absurd number of injuries and remain top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

However, to ensure Pep Guardiola’s looming juggernaut doesn’t catch up with them this time, the North Londoners are going to have to get back to the levels they were at a month or so ago.

Moreover, summer signing Viktor Gyokeres will have to start firing, as at the moment, with him not scoring, there is only really one signing who feels more pointless.

Gyokeres’ Arsenal struggles

Even before the summer transfer window opened, it was a fairly common belief that what Arsenal needed to take that next step was a truly clinical number nine.

So, with this in mind, the club made the logical decision to go out and sign Gyokeres for a fee of around £63.5m.

Sure, the Swedish international wasn’t exactly tried and tested in a top-five league, but over the last two seasons, he racked up a frankly absurd tally of 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 games.

So, while nobody expected him to replicate those numbers in England, nor produce even 50% of them, there was an expectation that he’d be a goalscoring force for the Gunners.

Unfortunately, that just hasn’t happened.

Now, to be fair to him, the 27-year-old has not been as diabolically poor as some might have you believe, but his tally of six goals in 19 appearances is subpar.

More worryingly, the Stockholm-born monster has also failed the eye test.

His touches are heavy; he doesn’t hold the ball up well enough for someone his size, and, as we saw in theWolverhampton Wanderers game, he’s prone to losing possession.

There is certainly an argument to be made that his teammates could find him more often, but even then, in the last two games, his movement has been woeful, which makes that point somewhat moot.

In all, there is undoubtedly a world in which Gyokeres comes good for Arsenal, but it’s hard to describe him as anything but a flop at the moment.

With all that said, another signing this summer is looking even more pointless by the day.

The Arsenal signing more pointless than Gyokeres

To give Arteta and Berta the credit they deserve, most of Arsenal’s summer signings are working out at the moment, be that Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi or Cristhian Mosquera.

However, one addition to the team that is only becoming more perplexing as the weeks pass is Christian Norgaard.

Now, this isn’t to say that the Danish international is a bad player, he proved quite the opposite during his time captaining Brentford.

However, the club brought him to North London in June and since then he has barely played.

The 31-year-old has only played 392 minutes of football this season, across eight appearances.

That also includes his impressive showing at centre-back away to Club Brugge.

In fact, that performance is what makes his move feel somewhat pointless, as he showed he can come in and do a job to a decent standard, and yet the manager barely plays him — what’s the point?

After that game, Arteta told the press that the midfielder is “immaculate” and “somebody that makes all of us better every single day.”

Yet, despite the club going through something of a defensive injury crisis and Zubimendi being in desperate need of a rest, he didn’t hand the 39-capped international any minutes against bottom of the table Wolves the following game.

Ultimately, it’s not Norgaard’s quality that makes his transfer to Arsenal feel pointless, but the fact that Arteta seems reluctant to use him.
