Hayden Panettiere Was ‘So Excited’ For Her Birthday Plans

Published

on

Hayden Panettiere (1989-2026)

Hayden Panettiere was reportedly preparing to celebrate her 37th birthday with her daughter, Kaya, before her death at age 36. The “Nashville” star was expected to travel to Germany and spend her birthday week with the 11-year-old, according to a source close to the actress. Panettiere died on August 16, just five days before her August 21 birthday.

“She was planning on spending the week of her birthday visiting her daughter in Germany,” the source told Page Six exclusively. The trip had reportedly been in development for some time, with Panettiere frequently discussing her excitement about seeing Kaya. “She was so excited to see her and was telling everyone how much she was looking forward to spending time with her,” the insider added.

Panettiere shared Kaya with her former fiancé, retired Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko. The former couple dated on and off from 2009 until ending their relationship in 2018. Although Kaya primarily lived in Europe with her father, Panettiere repeatedly emphasized that she remained closely connected to her daughter.

Panettiere’s hairstylist and friend Erick Orellana also recalled hearing about her desire to take a vacation and reunite with Kaya. “I last saw her a few months ago,” Orellana told Page Six. “She was talking about how she wanted to take a vacation, and that she wanted to go and see her daughter. Her daughter was always her absolute priority. She loved her so much.”

Orellana worked with Panettiere for three years and said conversations about Kaya were a regular part of their time together. According to the hairstylist, Panettiere frequently shared photographs and stories about her daughter. “Her daughter was the absolute light of her life,” he said. “She lit up when she spoke about her. Everything she did revolved around her.”

The remarks challenge any assumption that physical distance had weakened their connection. Panettiere had recently described herself and Kaya as sharing a “really intense, incredible bond.”

  • Panettiere’s death has prompted the Drug Enforcement Administration to join the investigation.
  • Days after her passing, Hayden Panettiere‘s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, released a statement through his lawyer.
  • Panettiere‘s mother, Lesley Vogel, has been vocal about her feelings towards Hickerson, claiming “This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death, and that was Brian Hickerson.”
  • Hickerson reportedly struggled financially during his on-and-off relationship with the actress. His bankruptcy has now returned to the spotlight amid reports that the former couple had privately reunited.

Hayden Panettiere Called Custody Decision ‘Heartbreaking’

Panettiere relinquished custody of Kaya to Klitschko in 2018 while struggling with postpartum depression and addiction. During a 2022 appearance on “Red Table Talk,” the actress pushed back against the belief that she simply chose to give her daughter away. “It wasn’t fully my decision,” she explained.

Panettiere said she initially believed the custody arrangement could change after she sought treatment and stabilized her life. According to ABC News, Panettiere described signing the custody documents as the “most heartbreaking thing” she had ever done. She entered treatment while Kaya continued living with Klitschko. Panettiere later acknowledged that mounting a larger custody battle could have negatively affected their daughter.

The actress also praised Klitschko’s parenting and called him a “fantastic father,” despite admitting that they did not always agree about the arrangement.

Panettiere and Klitschko reportedly remained on friendly terms after ending their engagement. Their relationship began in 2009, and they welcomed Kaya in December 2014. They ultimately separated in 2018, around the same time Panettiere became romantically involved with Brian Hickerson.

While Kaya remained with Klitschko, Panettiere continued discussing the emotional importance of motherhood and the complicated realities of loving her daughter from a distance.

Panettiere was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Police and emergency personnel responded shortly before 2 p.m. and attempted to revive the actress before she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate her death.

Authorities said their preliminary findings revealed no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An autopsy also found no “signs of trauma” that contributed to her death. Her official cause and manner of death have not been determined. Toxicology results remain pending and could take several weeks to complete.

Before Practical Magic 2, Stream These Great Movies for Free

NICOLE KIDMAN and SANDRA BULLOCK PRACTICAL MAGIC 2

The 1990s are back in a big way. Baggy jeans and relaxed fits are all the rage in fashion, while beloved films from that era like Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion with original stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow and Heat are about to get long-awaited follow-ups soon.

Next month, another ‘90s classic, Practical Magic, is finally getting the sequel fans have been wanting for years.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back as Sally and Gillian Owens, two close sisters who share the same gift for, well, practical magic.

With Practical Magic 2 set to bewitch moviegoers on September 11, Watch With Us is getting ready by watching some of Bullock and Kidman’s best movies — and, let’s be honest, some films that are so-bad-they’re-entertaining.

And to save some money to fund our holiday trip to Fiji, we’re going to one of our favorite FAST platforms to stream some of the best free-to-watch movies around.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back as the Owens sisters in the official Practical Magic 2 trailer — and this time around, a dead ex-boyfriend is nowhere in sight. “No magic is stronger than sisterhood. Cast by fate, tested by time and never broken,” Aunt Frances “Franny” (Stockard Channing) reveals in the trailer, released […]

The following Sandra Bullock films are now available on-demand on Pluto TV:

Gravity
The Net
Forces of Nature
The Thing Called Love

Aside from the mediocre Forces of Nature, you can’t go wrong with any one of these titles. The Miss Congeniality movies have long been adored by Bullock’s fans, and Gravity is a top-tier sci-fi that gave the actress her second Oscar nomination.

If you only had time to watch one of these films, I’d recommend Two Weeks Notice. The 2002 film, which stars Bullock as a lawyer who has a combative love/late relationship with her boss, the demanding George Wade (Hugh Grant), is a top-notch rom-com that features both of its lead stars at the top of their game. It’s a low-key charmer that not a lot of people have seen.

Is there any better encapsulation of the sheer oddity of Kidman’s filmography? The Aussie actress won an Oscar for The Hours and received critical acclaim for Margot at the Wedding and Rabbit Hole, but also starred in The Paperboy, a lurid thriller where she urinates on Zac Efron to save his life. (No, I’m not joking.)

Fans have already started to prepare their midnight margaritas in anticipation of Practical Magic 2 — and star Sandra Bullock is thrilled to be returning for the sequel alongside Nicole Kidman. “Sandra’s really excited about Practical Magic 2,” a source exclusively shares in the latest issue of Us Weekly. “Nicole is someone she adores, and […]

Kidman is one of the most interesting actors working today, but I’m a huge fan of one of her more traditional films, The Hours. A literate drama about how the lives of three women from three different time periods are affected by Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, The Hours features a star-studded cast that includes Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, John C. Reilly and Claire Danes, a brilliant score by Philip Glass and intelligent direction by Stephen Daldry. But Kidman won an Oscar for a reason, and her Virginia Woolf is a fascinating character — brilliant yet plagued with doubt, she lives to write even if it drives her mad. It’s such an impressive performance that she beat out co-star Moore (for Far From Heaven) and Diane Lane (for Unfaithful) to win her first, and so far only, Academy Award.

Blue Eye Samurai Renewed for Third and Final Season at Netflix

Netflix is giving Mizu the chance to finish her revenge story.

The streamer has officially renewed its acclaimed animated series Blue Eye Samurai for a third and final season, confirming that the upcoming chapter will bring Mizu’s story to an end. The announcement comes well ahead of Season 2, which is now set to premiere in January 2027.

Season 3 is currently planned for 2028, meaning fans won’t have nearly as long to wait between the show’s final two seasons. Production on Season 2 has reportedly wrapped, while work on the third season is already underway.

Created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, Blue Eye Samurai debuted on Netflix in 2023 and follows Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine, a mixed-race swordmaster pursuing a brutal quest for revenge in 17th-century Japan.

Season 2 will take that journey far beyond Japan. After the events of the first-season finale, Mizu heads to London in pursuit of the remaining men connected to her past. Meanwhile, the story will continue back in Japan as Akemi and Taigen navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new shogun and Ringo searches for a new purpose.

Erskine is expected to return alongside Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen and Masi Oka as Ringo.

Netflix’s decision to order the final season this early gives Noizumi and Green something increasingly rare in streaming television: the opportunity to plan a definitive ending. Rather than leaving Mizu’s fate dependent on another renewal after Season 2, the creators can now build toward a planned conclusion.

The series has become one of Netflix’s most acclaimed animated originals since its debut, earning multiple awards, including the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program.

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 premieres on Netflix in January 2027, although an exact date has not yet been announced. The third and final season is expected to arrive in 2028.

James Bond Front-Runner Officially Drops Out of 007 Race

James Bond Front-Runner Officially Drops Out of 007 Race

We’re now at half a decade since Daniel Craig was exploded as James Bond in No Time to Die, and we’re somehow still none the wiser about who will inherit the tuxedo, bloodstains not included. This is the first time the role has needed to be recast in more than two decades, and plenty has changed since Craig was announced as Pierce Brosnan’s successor in 2005. Amazon MGM Studios now has creative control over the franchise, a new movie is finally starting to take shape, and seemingly every British actor between the ages of 25 and 45 has been linked with 007 at some point. Well, one of them isn’t up for it.

Theo James, who has regularly appeared among the frontrunners to become the next James Bond, has effectively ruled himself out of contention. Speaking with British GQ, The Gentlemen and The White Lotus star pointed to his age as one reason he doesn’t see himself taking over from Craig. “I’m definitely too old now, for one.”

That’s an interesting assessment given that James is 41 years old, while Craig was 38 when Casino Royale arrived in theaters, and Brosnan was actually older than James is now when GoldenEye introduced his version of 007 at 42. But maybe Amazon just wants someone who can spend a decade playing the role, similar to Craig’s five-film, 15-year run. Starting at 41 could potentially leave James playing Bond into his 50s.

Arrakis · Dune

Paul Atreides

You carry a weight most people would crumble under — the knowledge of what you’re capable of, and the burden of what you might have to become.

  • You see further ahead than others and you plan accordingly, even when the vision frightens you.
  • You are driven by loyalty to your people and a sense of destiny you didn’t ask for but can’t escape.
  • Paul Atreides is not simply a hero — he is someone who understands the cost of power and chooses to bear it anyway.
  • That gravity, that willingness to carry what others won’t, is exactly you.

USS Enterprise · Star Trek

Captain Kirk

You lead with instinct, warmth, and an absolute refusal to accept a no-win scenario — because you’ve always believed there’s a third option nobody else has thought of yet.

  • You take the mission seriously without ever taking yourself too seriously.
  • Your crew would follow you anywhere, not because you demand it, but because you’ve earned it.
  • Kirk’s genius isn’t tactical — it’s human. He reads people, bends rules with purpose, and wills outcomes into existence through sheer conviction.
  • That combination of warmth, audacity, and relentless optimism is unmistakably yours.

The Rebellion · Star Wars

Princess Leia

You are the kind of person who holds the line when everyone else is losing faith — not because you’re fearless, but because giving up simply isn’t something you’re capable of.

  • You lead through conviction. Your voice carries because your belief is unshakeable.
  • You gave up everything ordinary the moment you chose the cause, and you’ve never looked back.
  • Leia is not a supporting character in her own story — she is the moral centre of the entire rebellion.
  • That same fierce, principled, unbreakable core is what defines you.

The Nostromo · Alien

Ellen Ripley

You are not reckless, not grandiose, and not particularly interested in being anyone’s hero — you just refuse to stop when it matters.

  • You see threats clearly, you document the truth even when no one listens, and when the time comes you handle it yourself.
  • Ripley’s heroism is earned, not performed. She doesn’t have a speech — she has a flamethrower and a plan.
  • You share her composure under the worst possible pressure, and her refusal to pretend the monster isn’t there.
  • When it counts, you don’t flinch. That’s everything.

The Wasteland · Mad Max

Max Rockatansky

You have been through fire that would break most people — and what came out the other side is something the world underestimates at its peril.

  • You don’t ask for help, don’t need validation, and don’t wait for anyone to tell you the rules no longer apply.
  • Your loyalty, when it finally arrives, is absolute — but it’s earned in silence and tested in action, not in words.
  • Max is not a nihilist. He is someone who lost everything and found, against his will, that he still has something worth protecting.
  • That bruised, stubborn, ultimately human core is exactly yours.

Theo James Doesn’t Want Everything That Comes With James Bond

But it’s not just age that James is bothered by. He, quite understandly, is entirely uninterested in the fame that comes with the role. “Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street,” James said, particularly highlighting the effect that level of attention could have on his children. “None of that, to me, is worth it.”

James acknowledged that being offered an enormous, career-altering role can be “very intoxicating,” but questioned whether the consequences would ultimately justify accepting it. And when it comes to Bond, he feels like it’s a point of no return.

At the time, it’s very intoxicating, being offered some huge, sexy part that would change your life forever. But it really wouldn’t ultimately be worth it. That would be an example of a place you could never come back from.”

There is currently no official date for the next James Bond movie.

Sophie Rain Celebrates James Fishback’s Loss With New Pledge

Sophie Rain Celebrates James Fishback’s Loss With New Pledge

Sophie Rain is turning James Fishback’s failed campaign proposal into an opportunity to support the educators he claimed his controversial tax would help. After Fishback finished a distant third in Florida’s Republican gubernatorial primary, Rain announced that she would begin clearing classroom wish lists for teachers preparing for the upcoming school year. The pledge arrived after months of tension between Rain and Fishback, who personally targeted the content creator while promoting his proposed 50% “sin tax” on earnings generated through adult content platforms.

Rain announced the initiative in a TikTok video that quickly gained attention online. “This week, I’m gonna be clearing schoolteachers wish list. James Fishback, a Florida gubernatorial candidate who just lost the race, wanted to tax me 50% of my income, because he deems my job a sin, and that’s on top of the federal taxes I already paid,” Rain began.

She then questioned whether money generated through Fishback’s proposed tax would have reached Florida’s educators. “He said this, and I quote, ‘Sin Tax would be used to help school teachers in Florida,’ but we all really know where the money’s going,” she continued.

Rather than simply celebrating Fishback’s primary defeat, Rain said she wanted to help teachers directly. “So, in honor of his failed campaign, I am pledging to clear teachers’ wish list for this upcoming school year,” Rain announced. “I know how incredibly fortunate I am to be in the position I am, and I want to use my privilege to be able to give back to the teachers who really need it.”

The content creator invited educators to submit their classroom and school supply lists for consideration. “So if you’re a teacher and if you have a classroom or a school wish list, please send it to me. I’m gonna go through as many as I possibly can to start clearing them,” she said. “I love you guys, and I’m very grateful to be in the position I am, and to all the teachers out there, thank you so much for what you do.”

Rain did not disclose how much money she intends to spend or how many teachers she expects to assist.

Content Creator Took A Victory Lap After The Election

Rain’s TikTok pledge followed several mocking posts directed at Fishback after the primary results were announced. After a post declared that U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds had defeated Fishback, Rain responded on X, “looks like i am keeping my money [laughing face emoji].”

Rain then resurfaced Fishback’s Election Day message encouraging supporters to remain in line and vote. “Better luck in 2030 maybe? [laughing face emoji],” she wrote.

James Fishback Finished A Distant Third

Donalds won the Republican nomination with approximately 47.8% of the vote, according to Spectrum News. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins finished second, while Fishback received approximately 10.5% of the vote.

Donalds will face Democratic nominee David Jolly in November’s general election as voters select a successor to Gov. Ron DeSantis, who cannot seek another consecutive term.

Fishback’s defeat prevents him from pursuing the tax as Florida’s governor during the upcoming term. However, even a victory would not have allowed Fishback to impose the levy independently. Under the Florida Constitution, a new state tax requires approval from two-thirds of the membership of both legislative chambers before being presented to the governor.

Fishback’s proposal never advanced beyond the campaign stage and was not enacted into Florida law.

Florida Candidate Proposed A 50% ‘Sin Tax’

Fishback launched the dispute in January when he announced what he described as the country’s first “OF Sin Tax.” “As Florida governor in year one, I will push for the first-of-its-kind OF Sin Tax,” Fishback declared. “If you are a so-called OF creator in Florida, you are going to pay 50% to the state on whatever you so-called earn via that online degeneracy platform…”

The investment firm CEO said the revenue would be directed toward Florida’s education system. “We will raise hundreds of millions of dollars of income on the OF Sin Tax,” he continued. “If we don’t raise that income, you know what it’ll mean? It’ll mean something even greater has materialized for the young women and young men of our state…”

Fishback did not stop at outlining the proposal. He singled out Rain by name and directly challenged her to leave the platform. ”Hey @SophieRaiin, pay up or quit OF. As Florida Governor, I will not allow a generation of smart and capable young women to sell their bodies online,” he wrote.

Rain, a lifelong Florida resident, quickly pushed back and accused the candidate of using her profile to generate attention for his campaign.

Sophie Rain Previously Accused Fishback Of Seeking ‘Clout’

Rain previously addressed Fishback’s proposal in comments provided exclusively to The Blast. “I have not heard of this guy until now, and I have lived in Florida all my life. He’s looking for clout,” she told The Blast.

She argued that she already pays significant federal taxes and questioned why Fishback wanted to single out creators for an additional 50% levy. “First of all, imposing a tax on OF girls is quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. I already pay my taxes, millions in taxes, actually,” Rain said. “Also, why are you taxing the creator, why not the subscriber?! By that logic, this makes no sense.”

Rain also warned that targeting creators could push them to relocate outside Florida, costing the state money generated through housing, tourism and other local spending.

Fishback maintained that his proposal was intended to discourage participation in an industry he considered immoral while raising money for education.

Gwyneth Paltrow Reacts to Viral Sam Altman Dinner Invitation

Everything to Know About RHOSLC Alum Jen Shah's Legal Drama

Gwyneth Paltrow is poking fun at a viral invitation, purportedly sent by the actress for a dinner in honor of OpenAI billionaire Sam Altman.

Entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni recently reported in his Puck newsletter that “invites are going out this week for a ‘private, off-the-record al fresco dinner’” with Altman at Paltrow’s home in the Hamptons.

A purported invitation included in the story has since gone viral on social media, with some leveling criticism at Paltrow, 53, for hosting an event honoring the OpenAI CEO, whose company is behind artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT. One X user described it as “tone-deaf.”

On Thursday, August 20, the Oscar winner took to Instagram, seemingly responding to her critics with mocked-up versions of the invitation welcoming guests to enjoy dinner with horror movie character M3gan, Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones, Shrek, Jessica Rabbit and viral TikTok character Chanty Beluga.

“We’re serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request,” Paltrow captioned the post.

Us has reached out to Paltrow’s representative for comment on the alleged dinner as well as the authenticity of the now-viral invitation.

Paltrow previously shared how her company, Goop, is embracing AI while speaking at the Meltwater Summit in New York City.

“The train’s left the station. We’re in a time of incredible upheaval,” she said in May, per PRWeek, explaining that Goop uses AI to drive efficiency, including managing workflows.

At the time, she joked that AI functions like “a chief of staff” at her company.

In June, Paltrow made headlines when she opened up about her political beliefs.

“I notice with my own husband — who is the best person ever in the world — he’s so progressive,” Paltrow said on an episode of her “The Good Podcast,” referring to her partner Brad Falchuk.

“Like, he has such a sweet heart and he wants to make sure everybody is looked after,” she continued. “I’m pretty centrist, and my husband thinks I’m a Republican. Which, I’m not a Republican.”

6 Coastal Horror Books To Read While Waiting for ‘Widows Bay’ Season 2

Published

on

Scuttler's Cove by David Barnett book cover.

Widow’s Bay, a breakout streaming hit for Apple TV this summer, has been renewed for a second season, to no one’s surprise. The delightful horror comedy series stars Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, an endearing mayor trying his darnedest to boost tourism on a New England island full of supernatural eccentricities. Namely, a haunted hotel, a back-from-the-dead bogeyman, a sea hag, and a curse tracing back to 17th-century founder Richard Warren all trouble the mayor’s aspirations to make this quirky little island into the next Martha’s Vineyard.

With its witty script, sharp plot twists, and genuine, never-overused jump scares, Widow’s Bay plays with horror conventions and tropes magnificently to create a series that feels both nostalgic and wholly original. Just as Widow’s Bay continually pays homage to a slew of classic horror films, such as The Fog and Jaws, these six books channel that same love of small-town coastal horror that makes the series so much fun. So, while you hunker down and wait for Widow’s Bay to make its return, here are six books that will satisfy your craving for strange, and likely outright cursed, seaside towns.

Scuttler’s Cove by David Barnett is perhaps the closest Widow’s Bay book match for those looking for that perfect combination of seaside charm and, to quote Dale (Jeff Hiller), “this place is a death trap, run!” Set in a working village on the Cornish coast, the novel follows Merrin Moon, who returns to Scuttler’s Cove after her mother’s death and finds her humble hometown in the midst of a contemporary crisis. Wealthy second-home owners and rental companies have taken over and transformed the village, leaving locals struggling to remain in the place they’ve called home for generations.

Aside from financial woes, the townies have an even older problem brewing beneath its picturesque surface. The village locals have spent generations keeping the town’s supernatural secrets buried, but now those secrets are beginning to claw their way back into frame in this folk horror read. To sort out the trouble, it seems a sacrifice may be in order. Scuttler’s Cove is a brisk and bold story of old rites and new foes against the coastal idyll.

‘The Price Guide to the Occult’ (2018)

By Leslye Walton

In The Price Guide to the Occult, the cursed island trope gets a wonderfully witchy makeover. The novel unfolds on Anathema Island, a remote Pacific Northwest community founded by eight settlers who made the terrible decision to burn Rona Blackburn, a witch, out of her home. Rona the witch naturally responds by cursing the island and its descendants. More than a century later, her lineage is still dealing with the consequences. Particularly, we meet descendant Nor Blackburn, the novel’s teenage protagonist with supernatural powers.

Leslye Walton’s magical realism fits into the YA classification, so if you want something a little more fun and spellbinding à la Patricia’s Sunset Cocktails, this is the book for you. Befittingly, Nor’s coming of age is tied to the appearance of a mysterious book that promises to cast any spell for the right price. Sounds simple enough, but readers will have their qualms. Things are bound to get stormy on this lush island with a dangerous, magical throughline.

‘Eynhallow’ (2024)

By Tim McGregor

Set in the Orkney Islands in 1797, Eynhallow is the only period piece of the bunch. Eynhallow follows Agnes Tulloch, a mother of four who has found her new island home to be not very paradisal. Her already difficult life takes an even stranger turn when an aristocratic stranger arrives on Eynhallow Isle and rents an abandoned cottage, and she gets hired out as a cook and washerwoman there. The mysterious newcomer is a scientist who has come to the remote island to fulfill a monstrous obligation. Said scientist is none other than Victor Frankenstein. Yes, this powerful novella is a Frankenstein rework, imagining what might have happened when Victor traveled to the Orkneys to create a companion for his creature.

Through Agnes’ perspective, author Tim McGregor transforms the isolated island into a gothic terrain where the arrival of a Byronic outsider threatens to upend a fragile community and, more intimately, Agnes’ internal world. If your favorite aspect of Widow’s Bay is the show’s ability to make the island itself feel like a realized character, Eynhallow delivers that same sense of place, but across the pond in the richly folkloric archipelago off mainland Scotland.

‘The Lighthouse Witches’ (2021)

By C.J. Cooke

The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke has all the coastal horror essentials: a remote Scottish island, an ominous lighthouse, missing children, witchcraft, and supernatural creatures lurking in the landscape. The story kicks off when single mother Liv travels to a remote island to paint a mural inside a 100-year-old lighthouse. She sees the job as an opportunity for a fresh start with her three daughters, but her plan goes spectacularly wrong when two of her children disappear. Only one returns.

Lune, the surviving daughter, circles back to the island 22 years later, still in search of her missing family members, when she receives a call that seems to offer an impossible breakthrough. The subsequent mystery narrative stretches across multiple timelines, gradually revealing the island’s dark history and the sinister folklore surrounding the lighthouse. Beneath the lighthouse is a cave that once imprisoned women accused of witchcraft, while local legends speak of supernatural “wildlings” capable of mimicking human children. It’s an especially good choice for Widow’s Bay viewers who were thrilled by the show’s still-blossoming supernatural mythology, tied distinctly to tunneling underground locations.

‘Duma Key’ (2008)

By Stephen King

There’s always a niche Stephen King title ready and waiting for any horror book list! This time, it’s Duma Key. A bit of a hefty read, clocking in at over 600 pages for the paperback edition, this book is more of a slow-burn supernatural horror story. Less comedic than Widow’s Bay, King makes excellent use of a distinctly tropical, remote setting off the coast of Florida. Sure, King is widely known for his Maine-based scares, but it turns out the Gulf Coast is just as eerie and effective a backdrop as New England.

The plot of Duma Key follows Edgar Freemantle, who lost his right arm in a construction accident. Reeling from the life-changing injury and a recent divorce, he decides to move from Minnesota to a Florida beach house. This psychologist-endorsed relocation, however, doesn’t turn out to be as peaceful as he hoped. Although Edgar rekindles his passion for art and receives recognition for his talent as a painter, his paintings seem to possess a power of their own. Indeed, Edgar’s newfound artistic calling has otherworldly undercurrents, connecting him to the island’s disturbing history and the troubled past of an elderly woman he befriends, named Elizabeth Eastlake.

‘The Lamplighters’ (2021)

The Lamplighters is framed around a lighthouse mystery comparable to the missing fisherman incident that kicks off Widow’s Bay Season 1. Inspired by the real-life mystery of the Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers, Emma Stonex’s novel begins in 1972, when three men stationed on a remote tower off the Cornish coast disappear under bizarre circumstances. The lighthouse door is locked from the inside, and the table had been set for a meal that was never eaten. Stranger still, all the clocks had stopped at exactly 8:45, and although their weather log describes a violent storm, the skies were clear.

20 years later, a writer approaches the three women who the missing men left behind, hoping to solve the mystery. As their stories unfold, the final weeks the keepers spent in the lighthouse are sketched. Secrets begin surfacing, and the looming question of whether anything supernatural happened becomes increasingly difficult to answer. For Widow’s Bay fans who particularly enjoy the show’s overcast maritime atmosphere and mysteries, this read offers a more subdued but equally compelling dose of coastal dread.

The Witcher Officially Returns With New Release in 4 Months

Published

on

Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher

The Witcher fans have a lot to be excited about in the next few years, even after beloved Geralt of Rivia actor Henry Cavill departed the Netflix series at the end of Season 3. Liam Hemsworth has taken over the role for the fourth and fifth seasons, and while it was originally thought that Season 5 would be released later this year, it has now been pushed back to early 2027 — an official date has yet to be announced, but it will likely be sometime in January or February. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also getting a new DLC centered around Gerald of Rivia, titled Songs of the Past, and it’s set to be officially revealed later this month. Details about the new expansion are being kept under wraps, but it’s confirmed to launch in 2027.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past will be the final expansion for the critically acclaimed RPG before players take control of Ciri in The Witcher 4, the next game from CD Projekt Red. Fans remain hopeful that the game will be released in 2027, but CD Projekt Red has not even announced a release window or shown any new gameplay or footage in a few years, so there’s heightened skepticism surrounding the project. The Witcher fans do have a new release coming soon to look forward to, though, with The Witcher: The Last Witch — The Complete Collection, which hits shelves everywhere in December courtesy of Dark Horse Comics. The new release collects six graphic novel adaptations of Andrzej Sapkowski’s original short stories and enhances them with new cover art with foil stamping, silver foil gilded edges, and more. It retails for $124.99 and is now available for pre-order.

Your Universe Has Been Chosen
You Belong In…

Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.

  • You are drawn to the moral clarity of a universe where hope itself is a form of resistance.
  • You’d find your people in the Rebellion — a ragtag coalition of true believers held together by conviction more than resources.
  • Star Wars is fundamentally a story about ordinary people choosing to matter in an extraordinary conflict — and that is exactly your kind of story.
  • The Force may or may not be with you. But the will to use it for something larger than yourself certainly is.

Middle-earth

Lord of the Rings

You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world’s beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.

  • Middle-earth is a world of ancient wonder, deep friendship, and a darkness that only retreats when enough small acts of courage accumulate.
  • You would thrive here because you value the fellowship more than the glory — the road more than the arrival.
  • Tolkien’s universe rewards patience, loyalty, and the willingness to carry something heavy across a very long distance.
  • Those are not burdens to you. They are simply how you move through the world.

The Wizarding World

Harry Potter

You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what’s right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.

  • The Wizarding World is a place of wonder hidden in plain sight, where learning is transformative and the bonds you form at school follow you into every battle.
  • You would flourish here because you take both the magic and the friendships seriously — and you understand that one without the other is incomplete.
  • Harry Potter’s universe ultimately rewards those who choose to stand for something even when standing is terrifying.
  • That choice — made quietly, without guarantee — is something you understand completely.

Westeros · The Known World

Game of Thrones

You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.

  • Westeros is a world that rewards intelligence, adaptability, and the willingness to understand that every alliance is also a negotiation.
  • You would survive here — possibly thrive here — because you don’t confuse the world as it is with the world as you’d like it to be.
  • Game of Thrones is a story about what happens when the idealists and the realists collide. You are sharp enough to know which one lasts longer.
  • Winter always comes. You are already prepared.

The United Federation of Planets

Star Trek

You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.

  • Star Trek is a universe where the questions matter as much as the answers, and where encountering something utterly alien is cause for wonder rather than fear.
  • You would belong here because you are fundamentally optimistic about what intelligence and decency can achieve — while being honest about how hard that achievement is.
  • The Federation is the universe’s most ambitious thought experiment: what if we actually got better?
  • You don’t just hope that’s possible. You think it’s the only thing worth working toward.

Is ‘The Witcher’ Season 5 the Last Season?

the-withcer-the-last-wish-the-complete-collection

Netflix has confirmed that The Witcher is ending after Season 5, and there are no planned spin-offs that have been announced with any release dates. The franchise is immensely popular, though, and with Ciri set to take center stage in The Witcher 4 in the next few years, it wouldn’t be surprising if Netflix had bigger plans for the franchise, especially with Ciri actor Freya Allan’s budding stardom. Netflix has also found success with animated Witcher spin-offs, and as the streamer continues to invest more in animation in coming years, it wouldn’t be surprising if this was the spin-off avenue chosen to be explored.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of all new projects set within the world of The Witcher.
