In the “small things that work well” category, I’ve been liking this mirror I got for travel.

If you’ve ever tried to apply makeup with a less than great hotel mirror (or overly fancy guest room mirror) then you know it can be challenging, even with great eyesight. For someone like me who does NOT have good eyesight, though, it’s almost impossible.

It finally occurred to me that I should bring a little mirror with me, and I couldn’t be more delighted with this one. It has a black cover that folds open into a stand. It charges via USB-C (and holds a charge!) and has two lighting options as well. It comes with a magnifying attachment with suction cups, so you can stick it on the mirror if you want to.

It also comes with a green pouch for travel, which is nice but not necessary since the cover makes it pretty sturdy. The whole thing is about the size of my Kindle.

The mirror is under $20, at Amazon.

We have the answer. Tems shut down her headline performance at All Points East in London wearing a custom Mio Made RS dress, styled by Dunsin Wright.

According to Hype Tribe NG, she ran through “Crazy Tings,” “What You Need,” and “Higher” before bringing out Dave for a surprise performance of “Raindance.” Victoria Park was rocking, with thousands singing along from start to finish in what was described as a massive night for the singer.

Splurge Monday’s Workwear Report: Floral-Printed Wool Polo Sweater

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

My budget for knitwear is a little bit less than this Oscar de la Renta sweater requires, but how gorgeous is this floral-printed polo? The colors, the fit, it’s all perfect. I searched long and hard for something comparable in a more affordable price range, but I think this might be something I’ll be looking for in consignment shops in 5-10 years.

The sweater is $2,490 at Net-a-Porter and comes in sizes S-L.

How to turn a spare room into a dreamy walk-in closet on a budget

Published

How to design a DIY walk-in closet in a spare room or corner

I’m a firm believer in having an organized, functional closet. When everything has a place, you know exactly where to look for, say, that boxy crop sweater you bought last season. You don’t lose track of garments, shoes, or accessories. And you have fewer morning panic attacks about the sad state of your wardrobe.

Life is better without those “I have nothing to wear” moments. Budgeting is better too. You have fewer impulse-shopping urges, and you make better use of the pieces you already own. That’s a closet-wide cost-per-wear upgrade, which could save you a bundle over time.

  • Repurpose bookcases, kitchen cabinets, dressers, and other secondhand furniture.
  • Use high shelves and matching bins for seasonal pieces.
  • A well-organized closet can prevent duplicate purchases, encourage you to wear what you own, and lower your wardrobe’s cost per wear.

The savings probably aren’t enough to justify moving to a bigger house, but there’s another option. If you have a spare room (or even a spare corner) available, you could convert it into a custom walk-in closet in a few simple steps.

Read next: 15 cheap closet organization ideas that make getting dressed easier

1. Plan for the space you have

Your DIY closet project starts with finding the right space. A spare room with a door is usually the best option, but you could get creative with a tidy corner and a freestanding room divider. Start by taking a walk around your place and identifying potential spaces.

The right space will probably be obvious. It’s the one that offers some privacy and more room than your existing closet. Ideally, you want to create a functional space that stores your things and is large enough to be a fun dressing area.

Next, grab a tape measure and get the exact square footage of your room. This is your best defense against blowing your budget on pieces that won’t fit. It also keeps your design goals realistic.

Ideally, you want to create a functional space The shape of the space will guide the setup:

  • Square rooms. These work well with an L-shaped or U-shaped layout.
  • Narrow, rectangular rooms. Parallel, galley-style rows are the way to go.

2. Get that boutique vibe on a budget

You may want custom cabinets for your new closet space, but you don’t need them. That dreamy, high-end boutique look can still be yours without the hefty price tag if you’re willing to be creative. For example, you can:

  • Buy bookcases from a garage sale. Add paint and molding.
  • Connect two bookcases with a closet rod between them. Add a shelf above the rod.
  • Install used kitchen wall cabinets near the ceiling.
  • Install used kitchen bottom cabinets and top them with floating shelves.
  • Repurpose old entertainment consoles or dressers. These are plentiful and cheap on Marketplace.
  • Upgrade ugly flat doors on old cabinets by adding wood strips around the perimeter to mimic Shaker-style doors.

Remember to prioritize safety. Heavy, unsecured furniture is a major tip-over hazard that causes thousands of injuries every year. Plan on permanently anchoring all tall dressers and heavy shelving directly to your wall studs. Following the CPSC’s “Anchor It!” guidelines can prevent accidents and ensure your gorgeous new closet stays intact for years to come.

3. Maximize space up high

The vertical wall space just below the ceiling could be your storage MVP. Shelves hung high, paired with cute canvas bins or woven baskets can your hold out-of-season gear. You can tuck away bulky winter coats and cashmere sweaters when it’s hot outside. Swap those pieces out for tanks and sundresses when the snow falls.

Choose matching baskets or bins for a high-end look that minimizes visual clutter. If you don’t have these on hand, grab your tape measure again before you shop. Confirm the clearance of those upper shelves and calculate the volume of your shelf space so you end up with containers that slide in flawlessly. The few minutes it takes to do the math ensures you won’t waste money or those precious inches of shelf space.

4. Zone your wardrobe

The final step in your closet makeover is the most important: adding your clothes. This requires a strategy. Stuffing drawers and bins without a plan ensures you’ll quickly get frustrated with your new space.

You can organize by garment type, color, or occasion. I like to group my pieces by garment type and occasion. So I have a pants section and, within that, a work pants section. You may prefer to zone your closet by occasion or by season. Find the system that works for you and you’ll realize real benefits:

The Budget Fashionista takeaways

Creating a chic dressing and storage area is a fun project and a smart financial move. If you use the space you have, get creative with secondhand furniture, and organize so you can see the clothes you own, you can lower the cost-per-wear on nearly everything in your closet. Even better, you’ll have a stylish space to inspire gorg outfit choices every day.

The Tonal Dressing Formula – Julia Berolzheimer

The Tonal Dressing Formula - Julia Berolzheimer

Outfit Details: Miu Miu JacketTopSkirtBag & Flats (sold out, similar here and here)

My eye almost always goes to color first, so tonal dressing only works for me when there’s an element of texture in the mix. The most compelling versions stay within one close register, but texture and proportion introduce enough dimension that the look never feels flat. Neutrals like camel, taupe, and cocoa transform depending on the surface: softened in lace, richer in suede, sharper by way of a cropped silhouette. An outfit made entirely of neutrals feels incredibly luxurious when every piece brings a new touch or feel.

That’s where fall starts doing the work for you. A suede bag, a fringed scarf, a shearling-trimmed knit, a deeper brown shoe, each one adds weight that the color alone can’t. It’s still easy to wear now with lighter layers and bare legs, and it only gets better as the textures start entering the mix. By October, the palette hasn’t changed at all. Everything you’ve put against it has.

Amazon Sundays: Early Fall Favorites

Amazon Sundays: Early Fall Favorites

This week’s Amazon Sunday is built around the first signs of fall finding their way into August closets. For this in-between stretch of the year, I’m drawn to small shifts: corduroy in place of linen, leopard flats in place of sandals, a striped tee in a more autumnal color palette, even a soft cardigan to bring print back into the mix.

When it comes to finishing touches, that same mood applies. A knit collar, velvet ballet flats, and my pareos swapped out for bandanas in far more fall-ready patterns. Right now it’s all about adding pieces in one by one, which makes the transition to a new season — cooler mornings, back-to-school, a return to routine — all the more enjoyable.

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

Hunting for something to wear with loose, flowy pants that veers away from PJ territory? Someone (a reader here, if I’m remembering correctly) was just saying that she found that a denim shell is the best thing to wear with those pants because it adds a bit of structure while keeping it casual and fun. This Madewell top looks great, and is on a pretty great sale. I like that there are no buttons to gape or give that “peekaboo” effect that some of the vests do. I could also see the top being great with a maxi skirt.

The top was $98, but is now marked to $49 at Nordstrom, with lots of sizes left. There’s a similar option in linen, also marked down (and whoa, Madewell has a TON of denim shells available right now!)

If you don’t like the ruching here, there are a lot of similar pieces. I like these at Nordstrom: Favorite Daughter, Ted Baker, All in One, and Yumi, as well as these at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and Gap.
