The Tonal Dressing Formula – Julia Berolzheimer

The Tonal Dressing Formula - Julia Berolzheimer

Outfit Details: Miu Miu JacketTopSkirtBag & Flats (sold out, similar here and here)

My eye almost always goes to color first, so tonal dressing only works for me when there’s an element of texture in the mix. The most compelling versions stay within one close register, but texture and proportion introduce enough dimension that the look never feels flat. Neutrals like camel, taupe, and cocoa transform depending on the surface: softened in lace, richer in suede, sharper by way of a cropped silhouette. An outfit made entirely of neutrals feels incredibly luxurious when every piece brings a new touch or feel.

That’s where fall starts doing the work for you. A suede bag, a fringed scarf, a shearling-trimmed knit, a deeper brown shoe, each one adds weight that the color alone can’t. It’s still easy to wear now with lighter layers and bare legs, and it only gets better as the textures start entering the mix. By October, the palette hasn’t changed at all. Everything you’ve put against it has.

Amazon Sundays: Early Fall Favorites

Amazon Sundays: Early Fall Favorites

This week’s Amazon Sunday is built around the first signs of fall finding their way into August closets. For this in-between stretch of the year, I’m drawn to small shifts: corduroy in place of linen, leopard flats in place of sandals, a striped tee in a more autumnal color palette, even a soft cardigan to bring print back into the mix.

When it comes to finishing touches, that same mood applies. A knit collar, velvet ballet flats, and my pareos swapped out for bandanas in far more fall-ready patterns. Right now it’s all about adding pieces in one by one, which makes the transition to a new season — cooler mornings, back-to-school, a return to routine — all the more enjoyable.

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

Hunting for something to wear with loose, flowy pants that veers away from PJ territory? Someone (a reader here, if I’m remembering correctly) was just saying that she found that a denim shell is the best thing to wear with those pants because it adds a bit of structure while keeping it casual and fun. This Madewell top looks great, and is on a pretty great sale. I like that there are no buttons to gape or give that “peekaboo” effect that some of the vests do. I could also see the top being great with a maxi skirt.

The top was $98, but is now marked to $49 at Nordstrom, with lots of sizes left. There’s a similar option in linen, also marked down (and whoa, Madewell has a TON of denim shells available right now!)

If you don’t like the ruching here, there are a lot of similar pieces. I like these at Nordstrom: Favorite Daughter, Ted Baker, All in One, and Yumi, as well as these at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and Gap.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I have a big gap in my wardrobe for short-sleeved work blouses that can be worn without a topper, so I was delighted to come across this puff-sleeved shirt from Loft. While I am always trying to branch out from black and white, a top like this one is just so easy to wear.

Pair it with your favorite trousers or midi skirt and you’re ready for just about anything in the business casual realm.

The top is $34.97, marked down from $69.95, at Loft and comes in sizes XXS-XXL and XXSP-XXLP.

16 Cotton Dresses That Carry Themselves

16 Cotton Dresses That Carry Themselves

Outfit Details: Merlette DressToteme Bag, Call It By Your Name Loafers (sold out, more colors here), Celine Sunglasses (sold out, similar here, less expensive here)

There is a certain type of dress I reach for in August, when I still want cotton, bare ankles, and the ease of a sandal, but with a shape that feels more memorable than a simple sundress. Something with volume, that stands away from the body, catches the breeze, and gives the dress a shape that feels styled before anything else is added. It’s the difference between something that simply slips on and something that carries itself through the day.

I love when that volume comes through softly, in fabric that gathers, lifts, or swings without feeling overworked. A white dress looks almost sculptural with peplum ruffles, while a dark cocoa shade adds a dose of drama to a maxi. Cotton has a longer calendar than it gets credit for, which is why these are the dresses I want now and still imagine wearing well into fall.
