Manchester United spent £200million in the summer transfer window to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad and three of the players have caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson has been impressed by three of Manchester United’s summer signings and has backed them to inspire better form at Old Trafford. United shelled out over £200million on new players in the summer and the new additions have begun to gel in recent weeks under Ruben Amorim’s management.
United brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens before the start of the 2025/26 season, while January signing Diego Leon also arrived following their 15th-place finish. Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp and was installed as the No.1 goalkeeper, with Andre Onana shipped out on loan to Trabzonspor.
Some pundits were worried that Lammens may struggle with the jump up in quality, having only played in Belgium’s top flight, but he has settled well between the posts. Ferguson, who managed United between 1987 and 2013, is still a regular at Old Trafford to watch Amorim’s side and is a fan of Lammens.
“I think the appointment of the goalkeeper has made a difference,” Ferguson told Press Box PR. “He’s young at 23, he’s quick, a big lad, good feet and hands, and I think that helps. I think they have needed that player. United have always had inspirational players over the years. I think that has helped.

“The other two, Mbeumo and Cunha, they look as if they will contribute to the recovery of our form.” United are sixth in the Premier League following their 4-4 draw against Bournemouth on Monday at Old Trafford.
That high-scoring draw means United are now joint second-top scorers in the Premier League, level with leaders Arsenal on 30 goals, with Manchester City (38) the only club to have scored more. But their 26 goals conceded shows that issues remain in defence, with that the highest of any side in the top 12 of the table.
Ferguson won 13 league titles for United and is confident that the club have the right person in place with Amorim, even if it will take a long time to get them back to the top. “He [Amorim] is a good personality. It is not easy,” he said.
“I remember looking back on my own time there, starting off when Liverpool were the bee’s knees. They were a fantastic club winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again.
“We are now in the same situation. It could be ten years, could be 11 years, because of that cycle. It has to be thought out carefully and we have to make sure the recruitment is going to be better than what it was.”
