In the coming days, news about various Vikings players is going to be abundant.

Teams are in the process of going from 90 players to a maximum of 53 players. Inevitably, some good ball players are going to be shown the door even though they’re capable of helping on Sunday. Consider a trio who should demand a spot on the Vikings’ roster, at least in the opinion of your humble author.

3 Vikings Players Who Should Make It

Player No. 1 — Safety Kahlef Hailassie

He’s 25 and stands at 6’1″ and 195 pounds. In the past, Kahlef Hailassie has played corner, giving him an elegance in his movements that can show up when he’s plucking passes out of the sky.

In the Ravens preseason game, Hailassie was a critical part of the goal line defense. Vikings Territory chatted with him following the game. “We just stood tall,” Hailassie explained in a pretty nonchalant manner. He went on, “I think they had got like a 1st down or something like that, we still stood tall.” Not too long afterwards, Hailassie noted the importance of being “a dog at the end of the day” since it’s a part of the game where “that’s the type of situation that’s more mental.”

PFF gave him a 62.6 grade for the preseason.

Player No. 2 — Defensive Tackle Elijah Williams

At best, Elijah Williams is the DT5. All of Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez, Domonique Orange, and Caleb Banks are above him. Are there others? How many defensive linemen get kept?

Earlier in the offseason, Mr. Williams told me that he’s up to 305. So, too, did he speak to an ability to move up and down the line, a critical ability for any player working under the tutelage of Brian Flores. Don’t expect him to be the second coming of Kevin Williams. Instead, look for a young fella who clearly knows how to work hard to contribute in a sneaky important job.

Player No. 3 — Running Back Zavier Scott

Based purely on offseason performance, Zavier Scott is the Vikings’ RB3.

The former receiver is now working as a running back. He’s got good size, nice hands, and can help on specials. What’s missing is that extra gear as a runner to truly leave defenders behind. Does solid all-around play make him a better fit than Demond Claiborne’s elite speed?

In about a month, the Houston Astros have a pretty good chance to answer the question: Can a Major League Baseball team make the postseason without employing a general manager?

It used to happen a lot, like 125 years ago, because GMs in MLB didn’t really exist back then. Astros owner Jim Crane could be attempting a pivot to the past.

Despite the Astros being in position to win the AL West, Crane fired GM Dana Brown earlier this week. Brown’s duties, such as they are at this time of the season, are handled by various underlings, reportedly including Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell. Crane himself will oversee baseball operations, like when the actual landlord comes over to fix leaky plumbing.

In a sense, the Astros are a microcosm of the entire American League. You check to see and, yep, they’re in first or second place. Then you look closer and…

The Astros have been decidedly mediocre in 2026. Never more than three games over .500, sometimes as many as 11 under.

Still, the timing of Brown’s parting was peculiar. Not only could the Astros still make the playoffs this season, but if they did, it would be for the third time since they promoted Brown to GM in January 2023. That’s a pretty good record! The timing of Brown’s hiring was odd, too, considering former GM James Click left just days (or hours?) after the Astros won the World Series because Crane offered him a lousy contract extension.) after the Astros won the World Series because Crane offered him a lousy contract extension.

It makes you wonder if the Astros’ apparent dysfunction — which many organizations admittedly would prefer to the non-winning kind of dysfunction — has more to do with Crane than anyone else.

No matter: Let’s say manager Joe Espada’s team makes the playoffs one way or another. Would they have a chance to win something?

With slugger Yordan Alvarez in the lineup, they might have a puncher’s chance. He’s the best hitter in the AL by a wide margin. Fearsome and patient. But he’s just one man. Remember early in his career when Michael Jordan used to make the NBA playoffs with the Chicago Bulls? The Boston Celtics always seemed sweep the series, but MJ would still drop 63 points. It was fun!

That’s probably the best-case scenario for the Astros, although they’re not quite a one-man-gang like Jordan’s ’86 Bulls. Right-hander Hunter Brown, at his best, is one of the best pitchers in the AL. That could be a win right there. Jeremy Peña, Christian Walker, Isaac Paredes and maybe Jose Altuve make five-ninths of a strong lineup with Alvarez leading.

And Carlos Correa might be an “X” factor come October, if he’s able to recover from an ankle injury which, at first, looked like it would sideline him until 2027. The funny thing is, the Astros taking back Correa, in all of his expensive brittleness, might have been the move that got Brown fired — even if Crane was the authority who signed off on it.

Crane giving the illusion of being a hands-on owner harkens to a time when field managers and owners/team presidents combined to lead baseball ops in every way. The commissioner probably won’t let him go full Ted Turner, but if the Astros won another World Series while operating without a GM, Crane just might fire Espada and put himself in the dugout. Baseball needs a new Connie Mack, he’ll say.

All of that seems like a low-possibility outcome. But looking realistically at the Astros chances isn’t much fun. It’s not them, it’s the AL. League-wide mediocrity covers up a lot of warts.

Argentina women’s hockey team achieved a miracle on Saturday as they beat world No. 1 and three-time defending champions Netherlands in the World Cup final at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen to lift the title for the third time.Playing in front of a raucous crowd, the South Americans were crowned world champions after winning 3-1 in a shoot-out, following a 1-1 draw at the end of 60 minutes. Goalkeeper Cristina Cosentino was the star, producing a string of superb saves — during the shoot-out as well as in regulation time — to help Argentina pull off the upset.Cosentino was duly named Player of the Match and, speaking after the game, could not have been prouder of her teammates and what they had achieved.After all, this was the first time since 2010 that the Dutch women lost a World Cup final. And 16 years ago, it was Argentina who had beaten them to claim the title for the second time — their first coming in 2002, also by defeating Netherlands.On Saturday, however, it seemed for a long time that Argentina would not be able to repeat that feat. They had lost the 2022 final too, and it looked like history was going to repeat itself as Netherlands took the lead in the 30th minute through Yibbi Jansen from a penalty corner and continued to hold on to their advantage well into the final quarter.But Argentina simply refused to give up.They kept pushing the Dutch back and won numerous PCs. The Nebraska women’s volleyball team continues to dominate the Big Ten and the sport itself. But last season’s early exit in pursuit of a national championship leaves the team wanting more. 

The Cornhuskers finished the year 33-1 after an upset loss to No. 7 seed Texas A&M – who went on to win the national championship – in the Elite Eight regional finals last year. The defeat kept Nebraska out of the national semifinals for the first time since 2002. 

The early exit came as a shock to Cornhuskers’ fans, who had grown accustomed to their semifinals’ appearance for years on end. But the players responded with a second consecutive season with no outgoing transfers and key retention ahead of the 2026 season. If it’s time to prove any sort of volleyball dominance, now seems like a good time. 

Under second-year coach Dani Busboom Kelly and plenty of key pieces returning, the Cornhuskers are back in full force to reclaim volleyball dominance. 

Entering the season as the No. 1 team in the nation, Nebraska returned stars like outside hitters Harper Murray and Skyler Pierce, setter Bergen Reilly and middle blocker Andi Jackson. Reilly and Jackson finished the year with AVCA First-Team All-American honors.

Murray led the team in kills with 379 and added 34 service aces. Jackson trailed Murray with her 288 kills and 16 total service aces. 

What’s also worth noting is that Nebraska spent around $7 million on their 2026 roster – the most of any NCAA women’s volleyball program. While the Cornhuskers had zero outgoing transfers for a second season in a row, Nebraska brought in transfer opposite Allie Sczech from Baylor, who’s primed to help fill the roles of Rebekah Allick and Taylor Landfair, after exhausting their eligibility.

The Cornhuskers have appeared in the national semifinals 18 total times, and have six appearances in the championship game. However, Nebraska has not won a national title since 2017, when it defeated Florida 3-1. 

This season, the Cornhuskers open up their season with a competitive nonconference slate as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team. On Sunday, Nebraska will face No. 2 Texas for a renewed rivalry at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The matchup marks the first time the two powerhouses have met since the 2023 national championship, when Texas defeated the Cornhuskers in straight sets.

A win over the Longhorns would be a strong start for the Cornhuskers’ 2026 campaign and their journey to a national title. 

Adrian Bott harbours hopes that the decision to adopt a patient strategy with comeback galloper Revengeance will result in a lucrative spring reward, beginning with his reappearance in the San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill.

The colt was sidelined from the autumn carnival after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from a knee, an injury sustained after his victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) in November.

He has been given a gradual build-up to his return to racing. The stable had considered kicking him off in the Rosebud (1100m) a fortnight ago but ultimately decided to save him for Saturday’s assignment.

“We trialled instead. He’d had a long time off and I didn’t want to rush him back,” Bott said.

“Plus he would have had to carry a bit of weight with his Golden Gift win. He will be better suited in the San Domenico.”

Revengeance has been prepared for his comeback with three trials, and his most recent win in a trial impressed Bott.

However, the Tulloch Lodge horseman has cautioned punters that the three-year-old colt will be better suited over distances greater than 1100m as he progresses towards the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.

“He looks fantastic. He’s come back really well and he is stretching out nicely,” he said.

“It might be a bit short for him. I think he’ll be a lovely horse as he gets out to 1400 and 1600 metres.”

Revengeance has drawn barrier six in an eight-horse field and is set to follow the traditional route to the Golden Rose (1400m) via the Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 12.

All going well, connections are also keen for the horse to head to Melbourne, where races such as the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) will be considered.

MANILA, Philippines — Jason Kidd was honored to experience a basketball-passionate country like the Philippines as he joined fellow NBA point guard Tony Parker and WNBA legend Lauren Jackson in the launch of NBA House on Saturday at One Ayala in Makati.

Despite the inclement weather, Filipinos arrived at the opening of NBA House as early as 10 a.m. and stayed until the celebrity exhibition game coached by Kidd and Parker.

“The energy. The love of basketball, as much as we love it, you could see the Filipinos love the game of basketball and can play the game at a very high level so we’re very excited to be here,” said Kidd.

Parker and Jackson also took time to hold a brief basketball clinic for the young Filipino kids.

Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala and NBA champion Jordan Clarkson of the New York Knicks also gave a surprise video greeting to kick off the event.

Kidd, a 10-time All-Star and second all-time in assists with 12,091, shared that his most memorable moments in the NBA were getting drafted, when he realized his dream of making it to the league, and winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks.

Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki overcame the Miami Heat, featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, in the 2011 Finals.

The Hall of Famer attributed his success to Gary Payton, who became his mentor.

“If you have great teammates who want to score the ball, my job is easy. But I think being able to listen to the guys who played the game before me,” said Kidd. “So my mentor was Gary Payton, being able to listen to him, watch him because he played at the highest level, that was my dream was to be able to get to that level and so being able to have great people around me, I listened and then I tried to apply and I worked at it and I got lucky.”

After his storied career as a player, Kidd went into coaching, working with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks before winning the 2020 NBA bubble championship as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, led by James and Anthony Davis.

His most recent coaching stint was with the Mavericks, where he steered Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to the 2024 NBA Finals before falling to the Boston Celtics.

NEW DELHI: Former India captain Sunil Chhetri has admitted he feels “a little jealous” watching the current generation get an opportunity to face footballing giants Brazil and Uruguay, revealing that he never got such a chance during his long international career.India are scheduled to host five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay three days later at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. The high-profile fixtures will give a young Indian side a rare opportunity to test itself against two of South America’s biggest footballing nations.“I feel a little jealous as a spectator. In my 24-26 years as a professional and nearly 20 years with the national team, I never got an opportunity like this,” Chhetri told the All India Football Federation (AIFF).The former striker, who retired from international football last year, urged the current players to stay fit, compete with determination and make the most of the opportunity. Despite being away from the national-team setup, Chhetri said he remained confident in the squad’s young talent.“This is their time. There are so many talented youngsters in the team. Chhetri backs coach, rules out comeback
