Nigeria’s Flamingos defeated Ghana’s Black Maidens 4-2 in their second match at the 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Harmony Chidi, Mary Dunstan and Kaosarat Akanji scored for Nigeria, who played the final 31 minutes with 10 players after Elizabeth Adesuyi was sent off.

The victory gives the Flamingos two wins from two matches after they opened the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic.

Ghana also started the competition with a win, beating Burkina Faso 4-0. The meeting between both teams also renewed a rivalry from the 2024 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup final, when Ghana won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Flamingos Take Control

Nigeria took the lead in the 33rd minute through Adegbuyi, who finished well to put the Flamingos ahead.

The FC Robo Queens forward was also part of the Edo Queens team that won the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers earlier in September. She was named the best player of the tournament.

Nigeria doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when captain Harmony Chidi scored in the 45th+2 minute.

Chidi had scored twice in the 5-0 win over Niger and had also scored a hat-trick against Guinea during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ghana Fight Back

Nigeria’s comfortable position changed in the 59th minute when Adesuyi received a straight red card after bringing down a Ghanaian attacker as the last defender.

Ghana quickly took advantage of the extra player.

Three minutes later, Seidatu Wahab scored directly from the resulting free-kick to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The Black Maidens pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Nigeria responded with another goal in the 70th minute.

Mary Dunstan beat her defender and dribbled past the goalkeeper before finishing into the net to restore Nigeria’s two-goal advantage.

Chidi appeared to have scored again three minutes later, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Nigeria eventually sealed the victory in the 87th minute when Kaosarat Akanji scored from a free-kick to make it 4-1.

Ghana’s Gloria Ameaa scored in the 90th minute, but the late goal was not enough as the Flamingos held on for a 4-2 win.

The result leaves Nigeria unbeaten after two matches and gives coach Hakeem Busari’s side another competitive test ahead of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The WAFU B tournament is being played as a single round-robin competition following Benin’s withdrawal. Nigeria will face the other participating teams, with Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger and Togo completing the six-team competition.

The Flamingos have also been drawn in Group B of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, where they will face North Korea, Puerto Rico and Poland.

The World Cup will take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 8, 2026.

Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers meet in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday, their first top-flight encounter of the season.

Rangers meanwhile are out of the Europa League already after a run of four matches without a win, before an uptick in form and seven wins in their next eight – including that triumph against Celtic.

The India opener achieved the milestones during a blistering start against Bangladesh, as India raced to 71/1 in the powerplay in their bid to book a place in the gold-medal match.India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat first in the second semi-final. Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided an explosive start, putting Bangladesh’s bowlers under pressure from the outset.

Mandhana surpasses Suzie Bates

Mandhana struck 37 off just 19 deliveries, hitting five fours and two sixes before her innings ended in the final over of the powerplay. She attempted another slog sweep off Nahida Akter but mistimed the shot, with Sobhana Mostary completing the catch at deep mid-wicket.Despite her dismissal, Mandhana had already etched her name in the record books, moving past New Zealand’s Suzie Bates to become the leading run-scorer in women’s T20Is. She also became the first Indian woman to reach 100 sixes in the format.

Shafali joined Mandhana in attacking Bangladesh’s bowling, helping India reach 71/1 in the first six overs. The opening stand gave India early momentum in a high-stakes contest, with a place in the gold-medal match on the line.

The women, meanwhile, are chasing their first Asian Games gold since 1982. Their commanding opening victory provided an ideal start to that pursuit after a strong fifth-place finish at the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup.

The men’s team finished eighth at the 2026 World Cup and will be looking to rediscover its best form in Aichi-Nagoya.

India’s men are drawn in Pool A alongside Japan, Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The women are in Pool B with Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Uzbekistan.

Each category features 12 teams split into two pools of six, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals.

Indian men’s team performance at the Asian Games

India’s men have enjoyed a rich history in hockey at the Asian Games since the sport was introduced in 1958. Except for the 2006 edition, when they finished fifth, India have returned with at least a medal from every edition.

The men’s team have won four gold, nine silver and three bronze medals at the Asian Games. They enter Aichi-Nagoya as the defending champions after winning gold at Hangzhou.

Indian women’s hockey team at the Asian Games

The Indian women’s team entered the Asian Games after finishing fifth at the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Women’s hockey was introduced at the Asian Games in 1982, when India won their only gold medal in the event. The tournament was played in New Delhi.

India later won silver medals in 1998 and 2018, along with bronze medals in 1986, 2006, 2014 and Hangzhou.

They have also finished fourth on four occasions.

The women began their Aichi-Nagoya campaign in dominant fashion, beating Uzbekistan 19-0. India enjoyed 62 per cent possession and won 19 penalty corners in the one-sided Pool B contest.

UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland appears to be among those most proud of Sean Sharaf, who may have just become an overnight sensation after knocking out Olympic gold medalist and promising UFC heavyweight Gable Steveson at UFC 331.

Following the spectacular knockout, Strickland took to social media to celebrate the former Marine, sharing a screenshot of a message exchange between the pair.

In the conversation, Sharaf sent Strickland a picture of his belongings laid out in his room, revealing that he had been sleeping on a workout mat. Strickland, seemingly taken aback by his friend’s living situation, responded by urging him to get a cheap box-spring mattress.

Luckily for Sharaf, his performance against Steveson earned him the $50,000 Proper Chaos bonus for the event, which Dana White matched, giving him a combined $100,000 bonus on top of his fight purse.

Reacting to Sharaf’s $100K win, Strickland wrote:

“@sharafmma time to get a nicer mattress after that 100k bonus you’re about to get.”

Sharaf entered his UFC 331 bout against Steveson as a massive underdog, with the UFC’s official website listing the Olympic champion as a -2000 favorite. As the fight began, the 26-year-old rushed to meet Sharaf in the center of the cage with a leg kick.

The former United States Marine quickly pushed back his fellow American before unloading a right hand that grazed Steveson’s chin, followed by a nuclear left that shut his lights out.

Sharaf then followed up with a brief flurry of ground-and-pound before the referee stepped in to stop the fight just 12 seconds into the opening round.

The loss to Sharaf marked the first setback of Steveson’s MMA career. He entered UFC 331 riding a four-fight streak of first-round knockouts.

Meanwhile, Sharaf entered UFC 331 having lost his first two fights in the promotion by TKO, making his stunning upset over Steveson all the more significant. The victory not only marked a remarkable turnaround for the former Marine but could also have saved his UFC career from being cut short.
