Mia takes the reins! Zara Tindall’s 12-year-old daughter follows in her mother’s equestrian footsteps at Blenheim Palace horse trials

Experienced equestrian Zara cheered her daughter Mia (pictured on her horse, Bunny Two Twirls) on at Blenheim Palace this weekend

Mia Tindall followed in her mother’s equestrian footsteps at the weekend – and was the spitting image of Zara competing around the same age.

The 12-year-old took the reins for the team show jumping competition at the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials in Oxfordshire on Sunday.

Wearing traditional uniform as she rode her pony Bunny Two Twirls, Mia looked very much like Zara did when she took part in an Animal Fun Day charity event at Ascot Racecourse in 1992 aged 11.

Her mother beamed as she watched her daughter, having competed at Blenheim herself earlier this weekend on her horse Classicals Euro Star, affectionately known as Casper.

The mother and daughter daughter were pictured chatting and smiling in jodhpurs this morning, both looking in their element as they prepared to saddle up.

Later on in the day, Zara was spotted helping Mia prepare to compete, watching her do a practice round of the jumps and feeding Mia’s pony.

The young royal looked confident as she cleared the jumps, competing in the showjumping section of the trials as part of her team Minchinhampton Pony Club, which is based near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Mia looked grown up and smart in her traditional riding uniform, donning black polished riding boots, a fitted competition jacket, and her hair swept back into a low bun beneath a black helmet.

Mia had been spotted grooming her mother’s horse at Blenheim on Saturday before competing herself the next day.

Zara, who is married to former England rugby player Mike Tindall and is the King’s niece, was dressed casually in white skinny jeans on Saturday and a navy blue jacket, as she cheered Mia on.

The royal completed her equestrian look with her hair tied back in a low bun and a pair of stylish sunglasses.

Zara, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and was once voted BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, proudly supported her eldest daughter at the junior event.

It is perhaps no surprise that the young royal has inherited her family’s love of horses. Her grandparents, Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, both competed at the Olympics in horsing events.

Queen Elizabeth II, meanwhile, rode as a small child up until a few weeks before her death aged 96 in 2022.

In a 2019 interview, Zara revealed that both her daughters, Mia and Lena, had taken to riding at a young age, adding: ‘They both ride. Lena is in a little basket on the saddle, purely a passenger. But we just bought Mia a new pony called Magic.’

The Blenheim Palace Horse Trials, which take place at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, ran from Friday to Sunday, with the Dressage phase running from Thursday to Friday, while the Cross-country phase began on Saturday.

Zara has competed at the prestigious equestrian event several times – and in 2005 won individual and team gold on Toytown during the European Championships.

The legendary BBC host left Strictly in 2025 along with Tess Daly

Strictly Come Dancing legend Claudia Winkleman has given her verdict on replacement host, Emma Willis.

The new presenter – who’s fronting the BBC One flagship show alongside Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe – made her debut last night, Spetember 19.

Willis – like hosting team before her, Winkleman and Tess Daly, shared her outfit of the week on her Instagram, showcasing the stylish, rose gold-coloured sparkly dress for week one.

Her comment section was awash with compliments from celebs including Claudia herself. The Traitors host simply wrote “knockout” in her verdict on Willis’ look. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.

Alison Hammond also commented saying “stunning” as did fashion guru, Gok Wan.

It was announced last year that hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman would be stepping down from their hosting duties after an incredible run. Tess, 57, had hosted the BBC One dance series since the very start in 2004 while Claudia, 54, had joined in 2010.

After months of anticipation and speculation, Tess and Claudia’s replacements were finally revealed as Josh Widdicombe, Emma Willis and pro dancer Johannes Radebe. Incredibly, Emma, 50, will be hosting the pre-recorded The Voice UK at the same time as live Strictly Come Dancing.

Talking about becoming hosts and hitting back at any backlash, the trio opened up in an exclusive interview with Radio Times. “You can’t please everyone and everyone has an opinion about Strictly. Some people won’t be happy that it’s us presenting, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I’m not here for negativity.” Josh, 43, shrugged, according to the publication. “What can you do? It’s a joyful show. I never read that kind of stuff before and I’m not going to start now.”

Strictly Come Dancing’s live shows start on September 26 on BBC One.

Panettiere's former Nashville co-star Connie Britton attended a celebration of life for Hayden Panettiere at Malibu Pacific Church on Saturday

Hayden Panettiere was honored by her celebrity friends at a memorial in Malibu, California, on Saturday.

Panettiere’s former Nashville costars Connie Britton, Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio attended the celebration of life at Malibu Pacific Church.

Ruby Rose, Beverly D’Angelo, Evan Ross, filmmaker Storm Santos, celebrity colorist Erick Orellana, makeup artist Beau Nelson and other friends and entertainment industry figures were seen in exclusive photos obtained by the Daily Mail.

The gathering began around 5pm outside the church where up to 150 guests ate food from Pizza Girl on a mezzanine.

At around 5:30pm, several doves were released in a symbolic gesture.

The group then moved inside the church for a moving ceremony, where a large photograph of Hayden was displayed alongside the words: ‘Honoring the life & legacy Hayden Panettiere 8.12.89 – 8.16.26.’

Security guards were stationed at the entrance to the church throughout the evening, while local Sheriff’s deputies were also in attendance. The celebration of life concluded at around 7.30pm.

A source told TMZ that the gathering was ‘emotional and beautiful.’

A band was set up inside the church and Britton and Charles Esten read speeches.

Esten also performed a song from their show, Nashville.

Panettiere’s mother Leslie Vogel, from whom the actress was estranged, was reportedly not in attendance, while her father Skip was.

Skip was seen wearing a suit with Hawaiian-style lei flowers around his neck.

A source close to Vogel denied that she was invited but told TMZ she couldn’t attend due to a family emergency.

Panettiere’s on–off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach have reacted to being snubbed from the late actress’s memorial.

The brothers understand why they were not included in Panettiere’s celebration of life, according to TMZ.

Panettiere died one month ago at age 36, after going into cardiac arrest following a suspected overdose in South Carolina, where she was staying at an Airbnb with Brian, 37, and Zach, 38.

Amid the Nashville star’s death, Brian is said to be spiraling and has reportedly lost 40 pounds since Panettiere died.

Last month, detectives confirmed to the Daily Mail that they responded to a 911 call from an ‘acquaintance’ of Panettiere, who described her as ‘unresponsive.’

Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was found on a mattress in the loft apartment where the actress was staying, TMZ previously reported.

Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said that Panettiere’s autopsy has been completed and that no signs of trauma were found on the star’s body.

She had arrived in Greenville with Brian one day earlier.

According to the Greenville Police Department’s incident report, Zach told police that Brian was sleeping in a separate room of the Airbnb when he arrived and found the actress unresponsive in a chair.

Zach stated that Brian administered Narcan – a medication that reverses opioid overdoses – and that they performed CPR while communicating with 911 dispatchers.

Earlier this month, Brian and Zach were involved in a bar brawl, leading to the former’s detainment and the latter’s arrest for disorderly conduct.

The brothers had been drinking at Wild Wing Cafe, an eyewitness told TMZ, when other patrons allegedly heckled them over Panettiere’s August 16 death.

Panettiere had a tumultuous on-and-off relationship with Brian beginning in 2018.

Throughout their relationship, he was arrested and charged in connection with domestic abuse multiple times.

In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, resulting in jail time, probation, domestic violence classes, $500 in restitution, and a five-year protective order, per People.

Zach previously told TMZ in the wake of the actress’s death: ‘There are a lot of assumptions, speculations and accusations currently swirling.

‘The truth will come out as the authorities complete and release additional details from the investigation. And that is important because the people who loved and adored Hayden deserve the truth.’

He described Panettiere as ‘precious’ and said her friends and family should be allowed to mourn her peacefully.

‘At this time, I want to clarify my involvement in effort to keep the focus on the fact that we lost one of the most precious individuals on this earth and to allow those that cared about her to mourn without additional noise, chaos, and misinformation being created and propagated by the media as well as the public,’ he said.

Why Man Utd did not get a penalty for Calvin Bassey handball incident as statement issued

Why Man Utd did not get a penalty for Calvin Bassey handball incident as statement issued

Michael Carrick’s side were trailing in the second half after Lisandro Martinez’s laughable own goal, but drew level through a heavily deflected hit from Matheus Cunha.

As they pushed for a winner, Lisandro Martinez hit a cross inside a crowded penalty area, which clearly hit Bassey’s hand and was acknowledged by referee Peter Bankes.

Key incident: Calvin Bassey handled Lisandro Martinez’s cross

PA

He did not, however, point to the penalty spot, and the match ultimately ended level, leaving United to head into the international break with just one win in their last five games.

Transcripts of referee conversations have now been released to shed some light on why United were denied a gilt-edge chance at a winner.

Why wasn’t a penalty awarded after Bassey handball?

Martinez fired the ball at Bassey from close range, and the Fulham defender instinctively brought his hands to his chest to protect himself.

Footage clearly showed contact between hand and ball, but Bassey got off scot-free as his hands were deemed close to his chest.

The theory is that Bassey’s hands did not affect the flight of the ball, which would simply have hit his chest had it not hit his hands first. Given Martinez had not shot, it was not denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

The conversation between the referee and the VAR has now been revealed by the Premier League match centre.

After the incident, centre referee Peter Bankes said: “On-field decision is play on.”

His assistant added: “It’s close to his body – it has hit but his arm is close to his body.”

And the Video Assistant Referee at Stockley Park concurred: “Arms close to his body. As seen – confirming the on-field decision to play on, exactly as described on-field.”

Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker beats Darth Vader and Hannibal Lecter to be crowned top movie villain

Published

Batman baddie the Joker, played by Heath Ledger, has beaten off Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader and Freddy Krueger to be named Britain's favourite movie villain

Batman baddie the Joker has beaten off Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader and Freddy Krueger to be named Britain’s favourite movie villain.

When asked to pick the most iconic movie bad guys, film fans crowned Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight as the best of all-time (22 per cent) in a poll for Freeview TV channel Great Action.

Coming second and missing out on the top spot by a single percentage point was heavy-breathing Sith lord Darth Vader from the original Star Wars movies (21 per cent), who was voiced by iconic US star James Earl Jones, though performed on screen by Green Cross Code legend David Prowse.

In third spot is creepy cannibal Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 smash The Silence Of The Lambs (17 per cent).

Despite Hopkins being on screen for only 16 minutes, his quiet menace left fans wanting more.

The Welsh actor went on to star in the Red Dragon and Hannibal follow-ups.

The study comes as cinemas brace for the release of new DC comic book caper Clayface, the Gotham saga about Batman’s shape-shifting foe which premieres on October 23 and follows a rising trend in filmmakers delving into the back stories of supervillains like the Joker and Kraven the Hunter.

And it suggests movie lovers are drawn to the dark side. The Great TV research found that almost seven in ten (70 per cent) film fans agree the bad guys are more memorable than the so-called heroes and make better central characters.

Playing the number one baddie the Joker was tragically Ledger’s final role before his death on January 22, 2008.

The film was released some six months later and he won a posthumous Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Bafta for his portrayal.

And, while the world frets over the advance of AI, a fitting fourth place went to the Terminator – played by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger (15 per cent).

Schwarzenegger starred as the cyborg assassin in the franchise’s first outing in 1984, famously warning ‘I’ll be Back’ – a promise he kept in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and a string of follow-up films. The survey also highlighted the reasons many Brits are becoming bored of superhero-based films.

Two in five (40 per cent) said the stories about the good guys feel ‘too similar or predictable’, while a third (32 per cent) think there are ‘too many superhero films being released’.

With a nod to the nation’s bad boy lovers, Great Action will also be premiering the 2018 anti-hero film Venom, based on the Marvel Comics, which follows Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist who becomes the host of an alien symbiote that causes carnage in his body, played by Tom Hardy.

The film will be on at 9pm Tuesday, October 27 on Great Action, on Freeview channel 42.

Additionally, Great Action will also be showing Punisher: War Zone at 9pm on Friday, October 2 which follows another anti-hero Frank Castle (The Punisher), a former FBI agent turned ruthless vigilante who wages a one-man war against organised crime using violence and whatever means necessary.

This is also a film based on the Marvel comics which starred beloved actor Ray Stevenson as the lead role. Stevenson passed away in May 2023 having recently starred in the Star Wars series Ahsoka.

Kate Gartland, Marketing Director at Great TV, said: ‘Great action films are all about the good guy-bad guy battles – and while the heroes have traditionally taken centre stage, our research shows film fans are drawn to the dark side.

‘At Great Action, we’re committed to giving action fans the films they love, from iconic villains to more complex anti-heroes.

‘From classic movie baddies to unforgettable characters like Venom, we’re bringing audiences plenty of action-packed stories where we’re sometimes rooting for the villain.’

Putin-backing United Russia party is predicted crushing victory with around 50% of the vote in country’s parliamentary elections, exit polls say

Plumes of smoke rise from fires (right) at an oil refinery on Sunday after what the Russians says was Ukraine's largest attack on Moscow

Russia‘s ruling party that is loyal to Vladimir Putin is set for a landslide victory in the latest parliamentary elections, according to state-run exit polls.

The United Russia party is predicted to take home around half the vote, similar to its result in the previous elections of 2021.

The Communist Party is on track for second place with around 14 percent of the vote, followed by the LDPR on ten percent.

The turnout for the election was around 56 percent.

The result of the election was never truly in doubt, because the Kremlin exerts tight control over the voting process.

In the absence of a credible opposition, the question was not whether Putin’s party would win, but by how much.

Putin is not a member of United Russia, but he served as its leader between 2008 and 2012.

These elections were for the state Duma – Russia’s parliament – rather than for the president’s seat, so Putin was not on the ballot card.

Polls closed on Sunday after three days of voting.

Sunday also brought Ukraine’s largest attack on Moscow since the outbreak of the war, in which hundreds of drones were downed and two people killed.

This is a breaking news story, refresh for updates.

Question Time Audience Laughs At Danny Kruger Over Crypto Claim

A Reform MP was laughed at by the BBC Question Time audience after he insisted the crypto billionaires who gave the party £72 million will receive nothing in return.

Reform has been accused of planning to hand hundreds of millions of pounds of tax breaks for crypto investors if they win the next election.

But on Question Time on Thursday, Kruger sparked incredulity by claiming Delo and Harborne would get nothing in return for their record-breaking donations.

To laughter from the audience, the former Tory MP said: “I think that it’s an admirable thing that these two men – who will get nothing for it, no peerage, no policy. They’re not getting anything for it. There’s absolutely nothing in it for them.”

Reform leader Nigel Farage last week said he was “honoured and humbled” at the donation.

“Both men know that we are the only party that can turn the country around and win the next general election – thanks to their generosity, we are now able to fight that election on a level playing field,” he said.

Fulham v Man Utd player ratings: Matheus Cunha saves Man Utd with last minute equaliser

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford tries to beat Fulham pairTimothy Castagne and Josh King

Bernd Leno: On his toes to make an early save from Lisandro Martinez and scrambling when Matheus Cunha’s effort looped on to a post. Denied Bryan Mbeumo with full-length save. 7

Timothy Castagne: Booked for bringing Marcus Rashford down as Manchester United broke in the second half. 6

David Affengruber: Excellent defence-splitting pass to release Josh King, but he couldn’t finish. Exceptionally fortunate to escape after being outwitted by Cunha close to the goalline but stepped in to take the ball off Mbeumo as he looked to counter. 7

Calvin Bassey: Not the easiest game positionally as Manchester United played without an orthodox centre-forward. Got forward to create Fulham‘s goal. 7

Antonee Robinson: Pushed into advanced areas in the inside forward position, which caused the visitors a defensive issue. 7

Sander Berge (Off, Larsson 76): Shot from the edge of the area turned away by Senne Lammens. 7

Shea Charles: Midfield partnership with Berge was key in protecting the Fulham defence when the visitors had extended spells of possession around the home area. Passing let him down on occasion. 6

Oscar Bobb (off Kevin, 70): Rolled an effort just wide of the post and probably should have done better. 6

Josh King (off Andersen, 79): Always looking to get on the ball and threaten. Took a good save from Lammens to deny him at the far post and his shot across goal was going in without the visitors’ keeper kicking it away. Blotted his copybook by getting booked for diving. 8

Alex Iwobi (off Palacios, 70): Also tried to exploit the inside left channel when Fulham went forward. Low cross almost created a chance for Gonzalo Garcia and another deep one did for King. 7

Gonzalo Garcia (off Muniz, 79): Half a stride away from having a tap-in from an Iwobi cross from the left. 6

German state elections: Chancellor Friedrich Merz vows to stay on despite ‘disaster’ in polls

Published

on

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gives a statement after first exit polls of the Berlin and Mecklenburg Western Pomerania state elections, at the CDU headquarters in Berlin

Embattled German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to stay on despite exit polls in two local elections suggesting damaging defeats for his centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.

In the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the party was projected to only just scrape into parliament, while the AfD was on track to win the most votes. Merz called the result “a disaster” for his party.

In Berlin, the ruling CDU was also expected to be beaten by Die Linke (The Left).

Merz is under mounting pressure, with poor approval ratings and rumours he could even be replaced mid-term in a so-called chancellor swap.

Votes took place on Sunday, a fortnight after the CDU saw its vote halved as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) won a major victory in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Echoing comments he made after that defeat, Merz told reporters on Sunday that he would forge ahead with his coalition government’s plans to push through a package of economic, tax and welfare reforms.

“The reforms have to come,” he insisted. “I am taking on this responsibility, because I want to move our country forward”.

“I would even go so far as to say that these reforms are the antidote to the authoritarian poison that, with the fascination of authoritarianism, is penetrating ever deeper into our society,” Merz added.

As the projected results came up on the screen at the CDU’s election night gathering in Berlin, there were no cheers or celebration.

This is a party that knows it’s in trouble.

Friedrich Merz is going on the offensive, quickly declaring he is going nowhere.

He has long coveted the top job in German politics and likely won’t give it up easily.

Polls for both states closed at 18:00 local time (17:00 BST), with a final result expected in the coming hours.

According to public broadcaster ZDF, the AfD was projected to take 38% of the vote share in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was followed in second place by the centre-left SPD, on 36%.

However, the AfD is unlikely to govern in the state as other parties refuse to work with it.

For Berlin, the broadcaster put the CDU on 20% of the vote share when polls closed, behind Die Linke on nearly 26%.

Prior to Sunday’s elections, there had been intense speculation in Germany that Merz could be replaced unless his party’s political fortunes improved.

Earlier this week, the leaders of eight German states backed Merz, who has only held the post for 16 months.

While his backers have argued that many of the problems the nation faces are inherited, Merz himself is deeply unpopular.

The former corporate lawyer’s tack to the right on issues like immigration has failed to erode AfD support while also alienating people further to the left.
