The RNLI urged people to take more care
Everything you need to know:
- A man who was visiting the Gower from London had to be rescued from the sea by the RNLI after local walkers reported seeing him in difficulty after he was cut off by the incoming tide.
- Just before 12.30pm on Tuesday, December 30, the Horton and Port Eynon RNLI crew received a report of a man cut off by the incoming tide at Three Cliffs Bay in the Gower.
- The man, who had been visited the Gower from London, had climbed onto a rock to try and take shelter from the incoming tide and was rescued by the lifeboat crew and taken back to the beach.
- The sea conditions were described as being choppy with an easterly wind which the RNLI said made the lifeboat journey “bumpy and difficult”.
- The man, and local walkers who saw the man, both reported the incident to the HM Coastguard who helped with the incident alongside the local RNLI crew and the Mumbles all weather lifeboat which supported the rescue.
- Lawrie Grove, the Lifeboat Operations Manager for the Horton and Port Eynon Station said: “I would remind people when walking on or near the coast to make sure that they check local tide times and plan walks accordingly. They should never try to to swim or wade to shore when cut off by the tide, it is extremely dangerous. You should take a means of communication with you and, if you find yourself in difficulty or see someone in difficulty on or near the coast, phone 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
