Bargain hardware isn't not very bargain anymore for us non Brits ,sinc Brexit here in Belguim you have to pay custom taxes an then the postal service wan't a hefty administration fee to handle all paper shit for this (probably all they have to do is push enter and print) and before it arrives on your doorstep you pay some times up to 50% more.

Lol the one I ordered certainly didn't have plastic on it. It had broken ears and came with 3d printed front drive bay blanks and PCI a riser blank. BH cherry picking what they send to YouTubers and normal customers SMH….
They also couldn't supply the right rails and instructed me to bend metal tabs out to make them fit. They were still a horrible fit and required a lot of force to get on.

Also did you see that the new Memory with CPU power design is coming out for use soon. Image that your memory longer reaches out for CPU use for the compute is now in the RAM… Down the road you will have a single solution that is just one system, No CPU, RAM or storage. Instead it will all but in the CHIP die design instead. Sweet!

Could anyone please share from first hand experience which of the components from the previous Gen8 generation are compatible with Gen9:

    – Drive caddies
    – Drive cage (that holds the caddies)
    – Fans
    – LOM modules
    – TPM module
    – PCIe raisers
    – Power supplies

It is fun see someone call it "affordable". Here in Brazil a server like this (2x2650v3 8x16Gb) costs R$ 26.990,00 (U$ 5.337,23) and I would have to work 22,3 months just to pay it (considering minimum wage).

Nah I'm glad to see SVGA and such compatible connects to a server even today, I have spent out only on secondhand but enterprise KVM kit and have found sometimes it can be hard to adapt to the present KVM and I'd hate to have to upgrade or buy another adapter simply because the cable costs due to being most times propriety. Kewl video and presentation.

About G8 and Gen9 compatibility. I haven't had chance to test all of it but most things are not compatible.

    – Drive caddies
    YES

    – Drive cage (that holds the caddies)
most probably NO, usually G8 have horizontal SFF and Gen9 vertical SFF

    – Fans
    NO

    – LOM modules
    YES

    – PCIe raisers NO

    – Power supplies NO, new size starting Gen9

    November 12, 2024 at 4:09 am

    Hi Morten,
in your opinion is it worth the difference of price between gen8 and gen9?
I'm thinking about making a server for home personal storage with Unraid and rack servers are really cheap in general, also SAS drives are way cheaper than SATA… But servers with LFF are not so many and I'd prefer to use standard 3,5" drives instead of 2,5", but to optimize spaces I think the DL 380 G8 LFF with 14x 3,5" slots is probably one of the best solution…
Btw, in your opinion, considering than disks in a solution like the one with Unraid, where only the disks you're using in a certain moment are spinning and for the rest of the time they're spun down, how many watts can consume a similar rack server?
I think if you leave it on 24/7 it probably uses 2-3% of CPU, so let's say at idle, how much consumes a similar server?

  26. @endystrike000

    November 12, 2024 at 4:09 am

    Hi Morten!
Is it possible in your opinion to upgrade the DL 380 G9 from 4x LFF to 12x LFF?
    Thank you!

    November 12, 2024 at 4:09 am

Dl360 g9 is also a good server still not so old. Can do a lot of things, but costs abit

    November 12, 2024 at 4:09 am

Thanks for the video. I have a use case where the environment is DC powered. I would assume the hot swapable AC power units can be removed and simply replaced with DC variants? Earthing is a consideration for the rack so all equipment in the rack would also ned to be DC powered off the same source and earthed appropriately.

I've had this server for almost 2 months and was frustrated on the low performance, especially IO. I was getting extremely low IOPS. Memory throughput was affected too. It turns out to be related to the power management settings. The default "dynamic power savings mode' doesn't react well to the user's demand. One has to set it to either OS Control Mode or Static High Performance Mode.

I have a HP ml350 Gen9 and tried to install a Xeon E5-2696 V4 processor, but the system doens't boot. It cannot detect the CPU's. Ram is HP DDR4 ECC – 2400Mhz.
When i install 2 other cpu's the system starts up without any problem.
I was wondering if the bios version could be the reason why the server cannot detect the drives, i'm on version 2.92 for the moment being.
Thanks in advance for your time, maybe you installed one of these cpu's in a ml350/380 gen8 servers?

    November 12, 2024 at 4:09 am

Sadly I had a different DL Server once with a bigger piece of plastic (air buffler muffler <= Or at least that is how you called it.). And the thing is I broke 2 Ram sticks while trying to remove it in order to change the cpu. There was no visible damage per se however it was still broken which is why I hate these things.

Great video. I'm thinking of buying one of these servers. The Dell R730 would be my first choice but the DL380 is more within my budget. You showed the parts of the server you never get to see in pictures and other videos and that answered a lot of questions for me.
