What is Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart about?

Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart chronicles the abduction of the 14 year old girl who was snatched from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the early hours of 5 June 2002.The sole witness was Elizabeth’s nine year old sister Mary Katherine, who feigned sleep whilst a mysterious intruder entered their room.

Although Mary Katherine described his voice as “familiar”, she was unable to identify where she’d heard it previously, and for nine months, Elizabeth remained separated from her family.During the trial, she detailed how her abductor, identified as Brian David Mitchell, concealed her in a mountain tent alongside his wife, Wanda Barzee.

The official trailer for Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, released last month, provides Netflix viewers with a chilling preview of the documentary.

Elizabeth’s father, Ed Smart, recounted the moment of discovery: “I saw this cut screen and the window was wide open. My wife screamed ‘call 911′”.

A journalist describes it as the case that “captured the nation”, while a detective involved in the investigation confessed they had “so little evidence to go on”.

The trailer hints at initial suspicions towards the family before convicted criminal Richard Ricci emerged as the prime suspect.
