Arne Slot was put into a conversation with Jamie Carragher after Liverpool’s victory over Marseille and it led to a mildly amusing exchange between the pair

Arne Slot hit out at Jamie Carragher in a tongue in cheek exchange. The Liverpool manager was in a good mood after the Reds took a massive step towards sealing an automatic place in the Champions League round of 16.

They travelled to France to face Marseille and put the Ligue 1 side to the sword with a clinical display. Dominik Szoboszlai’s classy free-kick was followed by an own goal from Geronimo Rulli and a 93rd minute strike from Cody Gakpo.

It was a massive result for the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last four Premier League matches. After the Reds have also been accused of being too slow and too boring in attack, Carragher asked Slot how it felt to see his side score three and keep a clean sheet.

The Liverpool icon asked: “Arne, can I ask about the set-up tonight. The last few months you’ve tried to make the team get better and better, and you’ve played lots of different formations, can you explain how it looked tonight?

Slot responded with a wry smile on his face, saying: “I find it hard to listen to you Jamie because you are the one who told me I have to make sure we didn’t concede that much.

“So I started to do that (change his formations on a regular basis) and people began to complain it became boring, so I’m not sure if I should listen to you.”

Slot’s quick response triggered laughter in the CBS Studio, which also featured Micah Richards, Thierry Henry and presenter Kate Abdo. After the giggles had subsided, Slot went out of his way to answer Carragher’s question and explain his thought process.

He said when asked about the changes: “Because of some injuries we have, because of the players we have available and because of the opponents’ style of play.

“We thought it was a good idea to play with Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike up front and to overload the midfield with players who are very good in-between the lines.

“I think you could see that today with full-backs who could attack down the side with Mac Allister and Ryan (Gravenberch) who could help out Joe (Gomez) and Virgil (Van Dijk) in the build-up.”

It was an amusing end to a perfect night for Slot’s side. They’re very close to securing a spot in the round of 16 via the eight automatic qualifying places.

Victory at Anfield against Azerbaijani side Qarabag will see them move into the last 16 without having to compete in the two-legged play-offs. It would be an enormous boost for Slot’s side, who are still locked in a tense battle for a place in the top four.
