Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that the Western genre has had such a massive resurgence. Many American viewers seem to be yearning for a bygone era, and shows like Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone deliver that nostalgia. Released in 2018, Yellowstone launched a new wave of interest in Westerns, led by its own spin-offs and a string of lavishly produced movies and shows from other studios. The decade leading up to Yellowstone‘s release was rather quiet on the Western front, although there were a handful of movies that managed to break through. They were invariably directed by the Coen Brothers or Quentin Tarantino. However, another critically acclaimed filmmaker was on the verge of making a Western before a decision she made fueled one of the biggest production controversies of the past couple of decades.
In 2012, Natalie Portman boarded the project along with director Lynne Ramsay. The movie in question was based on a Black List script by Brian Duffield. In the subsequent years, Joel Edgerton, Jude Law, and Michael Fassbender signed on to play supporting roles. The movie was set to be shot by the renowned cinematographer Darius Khondji, who worked with David Fincher on Se7en and more recently with Josh Safdie on Marty Supreme. However, on the day that filming was supposed to begin, Ramsay failed to show up on set. It was announced that she had quit the production, which prompted Khondji and Law to back out as well. Gavin O’Connor was hired as Ramsay’s replacement, with Portman’s Star Wars co-star Ewan McGregor stepping in to play the role vacated by Law.

Natalie Portman’s Western Has a Notorious Production History
The movie in question, Jane Got a Gun, was eventually released in 2016 after numerous delays. It received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. Jane Got a Gun is now sitting at a 42% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Jane Got a Gun flounders between campy Western and hard-hitting revisionist take on the genre, leaving Natalie Portman’s committed performance stranded in the dust.” The movie grossed only $3.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. However, according to FlixPatrol, it was resurrected by fans this week, more than a decade after its disastrous theatrical run. Netflix subscribers have been subject to numerous price hikes in recent years, as the streaming giant continues squeezing every possible droplet of profitability out of their audience. If you feel that these price hikes are so outrageous that they should be outlawed, you’re not alone. Apparently, the government of Italy is taking action against Netflix, with Variety reporting that Italian customers may be entitled to millions in refunds. While this bears little immediate relevance to U.S. audiences, the ongoing legal case could set an important precedent for streaming practices in the future.
Per Variety, a Rome court has sided with a consumer advocacy group against Netflix. The filing argues that exponential price hikes, which took place from 2017 through 2024, are in direct violation of Italy’s national consumer code. Specifically, the Movimento Consumatori claims that corporations cannot unilaterally raise their rates on subscription-based services without offering advanced notice and a valid reason for the change. Since Netflix has made no major sweeping changes to its service and offered no such notice, they are alleged to be in violation of Italy’s consumer protection laws.
Netflix Fights Back
Reps from Netflix have already announced an intention to appeal this ruling, though it’s unclear what grounds they have to argue. The streamer has 90 days from the initial April 1 ruling to make their case, or they’ll be subject to daily $800 penalties. Meanwhile, lawyers Paolo Fiorio and Riccardo Pinna have demanded Netflix offer refunds of hundreds of dollars to individual subscribers.
Specifically, the legal team articulated “A Premium subscriber who has paid for Netflix continuously from 2017 to the present day is entitled to a refund of about €500 ($577), while a standard subscriber is due a refund of about €250 ($288).” Netflix boasted a subscriber base of over 8 million monthly users in Italy back in 2024, so these payouts could range into the hundreds of millions if they come to fruition.

Will Netflix Actually Have To Pay Up?
For now, it’s hard to say with any certainty that Netflix will pay up, or that this legal case will have sweeping ramifications for the streaming industry. Individual cases have been brought against streamers in European nations such as Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, though they have yet to cause any major ripple effect. But, if Netflix does seek to continue raising its rates, it bears asking, what exactly are we paying extra for?
To paraphrase one proud Italian-American from the small screen, Netflix subscribers may soon be informing the streamer, “You’ve got 90 days to give me my money.” If Netflix wants to respond with a Tony Soprano quote of their own, I’d suggest “with all due respect, you got no f-ing idea what it’s like to be number one.”

Paris Jackson’s Absence Sparks Questions At Premiere
Now y’all already know the internet was watching closely. And, it didn’t take long for folks to notice that Paris Jackson was nowhere to be found. Instead of hitting the red carpet, Paris was spotted back in L.A., posted up in West Hollywood, and casually smoking with a friend, which had fans raising eyebrows. While she’s since smoothed things over with Colman Domingo, she’s still reportedly at odds with the estate’s executors, John Branca and John McClain, even blaming them for issues with the film’s production. And to make things even more noticeable, Janet and LaToya Jackson were also missing, leaving fans side-eyeing who showed up—and who clearly kept their distance.
Less than two years after Netflix released the unexpectedly successful film Under Paris, the streamer has unveiled what appears to be a new movie crafted in that creature feature’s image and designed to repeat its performance. Directed by Xavier Gens, who broke out in Hollywood with the poorly received 2007 video game adaptation Hitman, Under Paris emerged as a word-of-mouth streaming sensation. The film’s success showed that there is a large appetite for campy content aimed at the non-Emily in Paris demographic. Unsurprisingly, a sequel to Under Paris is in development. While fans wait for the sequel to make landfall, they seem to be tuning into Netflix’s new replacement.
Like Under Paris, the new movie is also directed by a European filmmaker. In fact, the filmmaker in question has already delivered a Hollywood blockbuster. We’re talking about the Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola, who broke out with the Nazi zombie movie Dead Snow in 2009 and went on to direct Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The 2013 action film starred Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, and grossed around $225 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. More recently, Wirkola directed Violent Night, the Christmas-themed action movie starring David Harbour. It grossed $76 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million, and like Under Paris, is set for a sequel.

There’s a Feeding Frenzy Among Creature Features
Wirkola’s latest film, however, is the Netflix creature feature Thrash. The movie follows a young woman who is trapped in her home during a Category 5 hurricane that brings with it a giant flood and a great white shark. Thrash opened to mediocre reviews and is currently sitting at a 38% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is headlined by Bridgerton breakout Phoebe Dynevor, alongside Whitney Peak, Djimon Hounsou, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga‘s young star, Alyla Browne. According to FlixPatrol, Thrash became one of the most-watched movies on the domestic and worldwide Netflix viewership charts immediately after its debut. The days leading up to the film’s release saw another European director’s creature feature — Crawl— make a comeback on the domestic streaming charts. On the same day as Thrash‘s release, Netflix debuted the Indian creature feature Tu Yaa Main, which follows a couple fending off a man-eating crocodile while trapped in an empty swimming pool. Now in its fourth weekend of release, the sci-fi blockbuster Project Hail Mary is refusing to lose momentum. The film has already overtaken a handful of past sci-fi blockbusters over the last few weeks, and will continue to do so in the weeks to come. A few days ago, it overtook the $228 million domestic gross of its spiritual precursor The Martian, also based on a bestseller by Andy Weir. Directed by Ridley Scottand starring Matt Damon, The Martian was critically acclaimed and massively successful at the box office in 2015. It grossed $630 million worldwide — a benchmark that Project Hail Mary has yet to cross — and received seven Oscar nominations.
This weekend, Project Hail Mary is poised to pass the coveted $500 million milestone worldwide. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie stars Ryan Gosling as a schoolteacher sent on an intergalactic mission to save the world. Project Hail Mary exceeded expectations in its theatrical debut, boosted by near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences. It currently holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is turning out to be Amazon MGM Studios what F1 was to Apple Studios last year, in that it’s technically a streaming movie that has done exceedingly well in theaters, especially in the IMAX format.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Has Gone Stratospheric
With nearly $240 million at the domestic box office so far, Project Hail Mary has overtaken the likes of Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar and M. Night Shyamalan‘s Signs. It has also doubled the lifetime domestic gross ofBumblebee, the highest-rated installment of the live-action Transformers series.
