In 1985, Eiko Kadono released a novel called Kiki’s Delivery Service, and it wasn’t until 1989 that Studio Ghibli adapted it into a feature-length film. Nearly 40 years later, this fantasy story about a young witch and her black cat will continue, bringing new challenges for Kiki as she embarks on her journey away from home. Kiki’s Delivery Service follows Kiki (Kirsten Dunst), a 13-year-old witch-in-training who lives in a world where witches and humans coexist. After leaving home with her cat, Jiji (Phil Hartman), she starts her own delivery service in a new town and faces challenges that come with her newfound independence. The film made over $41.8 million worldwide and had a limited IMAX release early this year.

Later this year, Kiki’s story continues with a brand-new sequel novel from the same author who penned the original. Kiki and the New Magic is a sequel to Kiki’s Delivery Service, written by Kadono. Also attached to the book are illustrator Yuta Onoda and translator Emily Balistrieri, both of whom previously worked on the 2021 reprint of the first story. Kiki and the New Magic takes place a year later, where the young witch becomes a celebrity thanks to her delivery service, and now has to navigate the price of fame. The full plot reads:

“It has been a year since Kiki started her new life as an honest-to-goodness witch, and the—not quite so—little courier has become a real celebrity. But fame comes with its own set of challenges. As Kiki faces increasingly perilous tasks, her friendships with Jiji and Tombo are put to the test. Doubts creep in, leading her to question her purpose. Determined to overcome her fears, Kiki must summon all her courage and perhaps even explore a new kind of magic. Will she find the strength to navigate her evolving world?”

Pre-orders for Kiki and the New Magic have opened, and it’s scheduled to come out this August. At the moment, there hasn’t been any official news on whether the sequel novel will get a Studio Ghibli film adaptation.

Is Kiki’s Delivery Service Worth Watching?

Kiki’s Delivery Service received high praise from fans and critics alike, earning a near-perfect 98% Certified Fresh score from critics and an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received a high 4.1-star rating on Letterboxd and won numerous awards in Japan, including the “Special Award” and “Popularity Award” at the Japanese Academy Prize.

Critics praised Kiki’s Delivery Service as an animation that’s “more than just a kid’s movie” and found a balance between heartwarming and “serious undertones.” It was also praised for its story about the value of independence and friendship, as well as Hayao Miyazaki‘s direction. Meanwhile, audiences saw Kiki’s Delivery Service as a perfect Studio Ghibli film that’s on par with My Neighbor Totoro. The film blew away audiences who saw the IMAX release earlier this year.

For Star Wars fans, the opening crawl to A New Hope has more or less come true: it is a period of civil war. In the fandom, there are still plenty of diehards who binge and defend every new show on Disney+ and buy their tickets to films like The Mandalorian and Grogu months in advance. But there is a growing number of fans who have grown cynical of the franchise after major failures like The Rise of Skywalker and The Acolyte, and those fans are worried that the franchise they’ve been in love with their entire life has finally run out of ideas.

That’s why it was relatively controversial when Dave Filoni became the new president of Lucasfilm. Filoni was once an absolute icon to fans because he was the showrunner for The Clone Wars cartoon, one of the coolest things in all of Star Wars. However, Filoni’s creative output has grown so self-referential that it sometimes seems like he is hellbent on remaking this galaxy far, far away in his own image. However, before Filoni held the reins of the entire franchise in his fannish hands, he got a secret warning from the most unexpected source of all: Andor creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy!

Star Wars Rides Again

Andor’s success honestly speaks for itself. It’s not just the best Star Wars show ever made; it’s one of the best TV shows ever made, one that would be just as compelling even if it weren’t part of this famous franchise. The show is a spinoff of the film Rogue One, in which doomed protagonist Jyn Erso opines that “rebellions are built on hope.” Now, Andor has created hope amid fans burnt out by high-profile failures like The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte. Whenever people claim that there are no good Star Wars stories left to tell, these faithful fans point to Andor, the labor of love from showrunner Tony Gilroy.

What was his secret to making a killer Star Wars show? Last year, he told Backstory Magazine about the advice that he gave to Andor’s writers and anyone else creating stories in this galaxy far, far away. “A lot of times when you’re working on IP storytelling, your impulse is to open the toy box and start playing with all the toys,” Gilroy said. “You should try to resist that, and what you should do is leave more toys in the toy box than were there when you got there and resisting the impulse to be a child and instead think more like a storyteller who’s adding to the world rather than taking from it.”

The New Star Wars Boss Got Secretly Called Out

Obviously, Gilroy didn’t specifically call out any Star Wars creators in this quote, but it sure sounds like he was taking a swipe at Dave Filoni. While Clone Wars was an undisputed masterpiece, Filoni has spent his entire subsequent career making every Star Wars project he works on a callback to his earlier work. For example, he was the showrunner for Rebels, in which Clone Wars’ Ahsoka became a major character. When he gave Ahsoka her own entire show, he turned the whole thing into a Rebels sequel. He also ensured that both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett included the live-action debut of Clone Wars characters like Bo-Katan and Cad Bane.

In other words, once Filoni opened the toybox, he never stopped trying to play with all the toys, often at the expense of good storytelling. Like, The Book of Boba Fett was already pretty bad, but the hammy, nonsensical cameo from Cad Bane just made things worse. Ahsoka is a relatively solid show, but Sabine is so different (wait, she’s got Jedi abilities now?) that she might as well be a different character altogether. Katee Sackhoff is crazy good in The Mandalorian, but bringing her character into live-action is going to be a complete waste if we never get a fourth season of that hit Star Wars show.

Don’t Let Your Sons Grow Up To Be Space Cowboys

Arguably, almost every Star Wars project Dave Filoni has worked on would be better if he focused more on telling good stories than jamming in cameos from his favorite creations. Tony Gilroy innately understood this, which is why Andor has (outside of Mon Mothma) so few prominent cameos from or references to prominent franchise characters. He tried to warn Filoni, but the warning didn’t stick, which is why the worst thing about the Filoni-written Mandalorian and Grogu is the return of Rotta, the Hutt we last saw farting his way through Filoni’s Clone Wars movie. 

If this is the kind of toy the new Lucasfilm president can’t stop playing with, is it any wonder that Star Wars just keeps stinking?

Fans of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia have been getting drip-fed information about the show’s upcoming 18th season bit by bit for the past several weeks. Thanks to a few well-timed interviews, behind-the-scenes photos, and social media posts, we know that Guillermo del Toro is reprising his role as Pappy McPoyle, for instance. Now, we’ve got one of the biggest sneak-peaks yet, as a Reddit user has revealed the full list of episode titles for season 18. Though there’s not much concrete information to glean from the titles alone, fans are letting their imaginations run wild at the idea of the gang’s latest batch of adventures.

Episode Titles Alone Are Total Insanity

Titles for the upcoming Always Sunny episodes include “Frank Marries A Corpse,” “The Gang Buys A Baseball Team,” and “The Gang Goes To The Ren Faire.” Right off the bat, these sound like classic Always Sunny premises, ripe for off-the-walls comedy and a slew of meme-able moments. The title “Gilligan’s Island: A Conspiracy Theorist’s Paradise” makes me think the writers have a lot to say about the recently released Epstein files, while “2026: A Virtual Insanity” all but guarantees a hilarious Jamiroquai needle drop.

One of the most striking revelations to come from the episode titles is the volume of episodes themselves. Recent seasons of the show have reduced their episode count to eight outings per year, leaving us with very little to chew on between seasons. It looks like season 18 will consist of ten episodes, which isn’t a huge upgrade, but I’ll take as much as I can get. As it currently stands, these episodes do not have official codes, meaning we’re not sure what order they’ll be released. Any way you slice it, I’ll be planted in front of the TV to watch “Mac And Dennis Tear Their ACLs” the moment it hits the airwaves.

Is This The End?

There’s another angle to the upcoming Always Sunny In Philadelphia season that’s been tearing fans apart. At this time, nobody has confirmed whether or not season 18 will be the show’s last. The long-running screwball comedy was renewed through season 18 back in 2020, though no official production order has been announced for season 19 and beyond. If this is truly the end, fans are already wondering which of these episodes will serve as the series finale. Some have remarked that “The War On Alcohol” has a nice ring to it, while others seem to agree “Dennis And Dee Don’t Get Rich” is a perfect anticlimactic closer.

No matter what happens, it looks like season 18 is shaping up to be one of the best outings in years, with returning guest stars, hilarious episode titles, and two bonus episodes tacked on for good measure. There’s no official release date in place for the new batch of episodes just yet, but you can binge It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia on Hulu if you’re not fully caught up.

Now that Euphoria‘s long-awaited third season has finally arrived, it feels like a weekly ritual has formed around the show. With the release of every new episode, fans, critics, and haters take to social media to discuss how the HBO melodrama has gone completely off the rails. While I won’t argue that the show is sticking to its roots by any means, I would be remiss if not to point out the fact that Euphoria was a completely insane series long before Sydney Sweeney started eating out of a dog bowl. In fact, I’m not sure what being ‘on the rails’ would even look like for this bizarre teen sex drama.

Euphoria Was Always Over The Top

As early as the very first episode, Euphoria is a strange series. The show focuses on sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but does so through the lens of a Southern California high school. Personally, I’ve always felt that these stories would make way more sense in a college setting, because I don’t recall seeing a lot of briefcases full of heroin getting kicked around my AP lit class back in the tenth grade. Maybe I was just a square back in the day, but I also feel like stories of female empowerment through sexual sovereignty play better when the woman is above the age of consent.

In the first season, there’s a whole plot line about a young, heavyset girl discovering her worth by becoming a nude cam model. From her own perspective, this makes her a certified baddie, but watching it as an adult highlights the predatory nature of unchecked internet access among teens. She may not consider herself a victim, but she’s a teenage girl whose self worth is entirely determined by her value to gross creeps in weird chatrooms.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who had drug problems and sexual adventures in their early teenage years, but that should really be considered the exception, not the rule. It’s important to note that most high schoolers are still shouting “six seven” down the hallways and watching people open Pokemon cards on Twitch for some reason. Not every show needs to be hyper realistic, but Euphoria always struck me as predatory in the dark and dramatic way it depicts children.

Unhinged Since Day One

Of course, even the adult characters aren’t safe from Euphoria‘s madness. One of the strangest plot lines in the show (or perhaps in television history) centers on Eric Dane’s Cal Jacobs. Throughout the first season of the show, Cal is shown to be a domineering construction magnate responsible for building half the town. In season two, he is struck about the head by a child of a single-digit age with a sawed-off shotgun. The bludgeoning results in a concussion, which causes Cal to go home to his family and dramatically declare that he’s gay now.

While explaining that he’s a concussed homosexual, Cal pees all over the floor of his own foyer, in front of his children, as some kind of bizarre, animalistic show of dominance. He then departs his home to go live in an unfinished house in the middle of nowhere. Later in the season, we see that he has situated himself in a community of homeless gay men, who go around using unfinished houses as sexual meeting places. I cannot stress to you enough that my description actually makes this whole plot thread less absurd than what plays out on the screen.

From the perspective of a day one viewer, I actually think Euphoria is less insane today than it was back when Cal Jacobs was literally pissing away his familial legacy. Sure, Sydney Sweeney‘s character seems to exist primarily for series creator Sam Levinson to screen test his barely-disguised sexual peccadilloes, but at least she’s doing it as an adult character now, thanks to a time jump between seasons. Zendaya‘s character is similarly troubled with a major drug trafficking operation, but it makes more sense now than it did in season one, when she was supposedly playing a 16-year-old.

In fairness, I think that the main selling point of Euphoria has always been its absurdity. The show exists to ruffle the feathers of social media users, who then drive more traffic to HBO with their complaints. It just seems like people have forgotten that now that the series is less about high school plays, and more about Sydney Sweeney putting on a diaper and using ableist slurs.

Euphoria is streaming on Max.

Kohan hinted at an “inevitability” when it came to Maggie and Liam’s feelings resurfacing. While the actress couldn’t tease how the love triangle would end, she expressed “hope” that fans would be pleased — and Rosner could return for more seasons.

“Everybody on set just loves Marcus so we would love for a version where he’s around one way or another,” she said. “We’ll see how that goes but as hard as it is for some of our audience members, I’m happy with how much it’s making people feel.”

Looking ahead, Kohan is hoping for more opportunities to learn about Maggie’s life from before her return to the Crossing.

“What I really loved about all of that was getting to do the flashbacks and really seeing the younger version of Maggie,” she gushed to Us. “Seeing her fully letting go and just going with what was happening in front of her … I’ve really loved getting to see.”

Sullivan’s Crossing is currently streaming on Netflix. Season 4 airs Mondays on The CW at 8 p.m. ET.

The war genre in movies is quite renowned. Since the dawn of the medium, the war genre has had a large presence in cinema, first influenced by World War I and then being directly impacted and outright reshaped by World War II. Subsequent conflicts like the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the 21st-century wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have also been hugely important for cinema. At their core, and barring some jingoistic depictions that glorify the military, war movies are usually statements on the futility of armed conflict and the inherent destruction that it carries. Anti-war movies are their own subgenre, but overall, war cinema is all about why warfare ultimately only amounts to senseless destruction and the erosion of the soul.

It is commonly said that “war is hell,” and it’s true, but only a few movies have truly captured that sentiment on celluloid. Even the best war movies can often come short of depicting these large-scale conflicts in all their harrowing infamy, whether because they might be more concerned with another plot — perhaps a love story at the center or the impact of the experiences on a soldier’s psyche — or perhaps because their interest is to provide an entertaining story first and foremost. Indeed, only a precious few movies truly commit to portraying war as hell on Earth. They are logically not the easiest experiences, and all three movies on this list require varying degrees of psycholigical and emotional strength to endure. However, they remain among the most powerful statements cinema has ever made regarding the corrosive nature of war.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (1930)

Based on possibly the most famous anti-war book ever written, Lewis Milestone‘s All Quiet on the Western Front is a gem of cinema that keeps getting better, more poignant, and more relevant with each passing year. The film adapts Erich Maria Remarque‘s magnum opus into a 152-minute tale of the fallacy of war and how young men fall into its trap. The plot centers on a group of German schoolboys who enlist at the beginning of World War I after falling for the propaganda spewed by their jingoistic teacher. However, they soon come to regret their actions, finding only despair, death, misery, and unimaginable pain in the trenches.

You know a movie is on the right side of history when Nazi Germany openly opposes it. All Quiet on the Western Front is a profoundly visceral experience, a tragedy of the trappings of war and the entire apparatus behind it, which convinces young men to sacrifice their lives for a cause they can’t quite understand. Like Remarque’s novel before it, Milestone’s movie humanizes these young soldiers, grounding their story in something painfully relatable before twisting it into something truly ugly and inescapable. At the center is Lew Ayres delivering an unflinching, unforgettable portrayal of a young man whose misplaced idealism leads him to a path of no return. All Quiet on the Western Front captures the breaking of the human spirit on the battlefield with such uncompromised commitment that it’s actually difficult to even finish it. The 2022 Netflix version is also a masterpiece, successfully updating a sadly timeless tale.

‘Come and See’ (1985)

Elem Klimov‘s Come and See is probably the best anti-war movie ever made. The 1985 Soviet movie stars an unforgettable Aleksei Kravchenko, in his acting debut, no less, as Flyora, a young Belarusian boy who joins a partisan unit during the Nazi occupation of Bielorussia during World War II. Through Flyora’s POV, we witness the atrocities committed during the conflict, particularly the grueling torture inflicted upon the civilian populace. Klimov uses a combination of agonizing hyper-realism with a borderline surreal approach to give the film an even more haunting and profoundly eerie quality.

Come and See is a genuinely disturbing and borderline traumatizing movie, arguably the most brutal and uncompromising depiction of war to have ever been captured on film. Relentless in every possible way, the film pulls no punches in showing the degradation of humanity and the depths of degeneracy to which some will sink under the guise of following orders. Notably, it shows the corrosive mentality that leads soldiers to turn every space into an open battlefield: civilians turn into enemies, concepts like decency and morality disappear, and basic rules go out the window, replaced by sheer instinct and self-interest. At the center of it all is a courageous, harrowing Kravchenko, arguably delivering the single most affecting child performance of all time. Come and See is an extremely hard watch, a movie that ultimately becomes a test of endurance. Yet, it’s an important piece of anti-war filmmaking, possibly the most meaningful and effective in the subgenre.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998)

By now, Saving Private Ryan‘s reputation is well established. Widely considered a masterpiece of the war genre and one of Steven Spielberg‘s greatest triumphs, the film is a true cinematic institution, one of the best artistic achievements of the ’90s and a masterclass in dramatic storytelling that never once sacrifices the emotional power of its story. It stars Tom Hanks as Captain Miller, who takes his men deep into enemy lines to retrieve Private James Ryan (Matt Damon), whose three brothers have all been killed in combat. As Miller and his crew venture deeper into danger, they stumble upon the realities of war and confront what it has done to each of them.

The most famous aspect of this seminal film is the nearly half-an-hour depiction of the Allies landing in Normandy, widely considered one of the most realistic depictions of D-Day ever rendered on the big screen. The extended sequence is raw and unforgiving; Spielberg throws us directly into the chaos, recreating the fury and mayhem with such brutal reality that many actual veterans found it too much to endure; famously, a hotline was established to help those veteran process their emotions. However, beyond the opening sequence, Saving Private Ryan is also a rather bleak portrayal of how war changes people; here, loyalty only gets you so far, and in the heat of the moment, with life and death on the line, many choose to indulge their worst impulses. It is still a Spielberg movie, though, so there is an underlying message of hope, about living up to the sacrifices others have made for you and honoring their memory.

New details about Taylor Frankie Paul’s recent Mother’s Day celebration have been revealed.

During a virtual court hearing on Monday, June 1, Paul’s attorney explained to a judge why his client’s supervised visit with 2-year-old son Ever was cut short on the holiday.

“My client wants every minute she can get with Ever. A few of the visits over the past month or so have been cut short or have not taken place, and there are a few reasons for doing so,” Paul’s attorney claimed. “A recent example was the child was extremely ill … with a cold sore breakout.”

Paul’s lawyer continued, “As far as the Mother’s Day visit, that was cut a little bit short because of limited supervisor availability on that day. There’s also just some difficulties and challenges in coordinating schedules with supervisor availability.”

According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, a Utah judge awarded Paul, 31, “parent time” on May 10 amid her and ex Dakota Mortensen’s mutual protective orders and ongoing custody battle.

Instead of her usual eight-hour visitation agreement, the court allowed Paul to see Ever from the hours of 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

While exact details surrounding Paul’s Mother’s Day celebration remain private, the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star shared a lengthy Instagram post on the holiday.

During Monday’s court hearing, a judge recommended that Paul’s supervised visits be lifted. The court also ruled that Paul can have her son on alternative weekends and one midweek day each week. Paul is still not allowed to host overnight visits with her son.

“We want that day to be consistent so we are on a set schedule,” the judge explained.

Mortensen will remain the “custodial parent” on holidays, with another custody hearing scheduled for July 8.

“I’m encouraged and I think we’re moving in the right direction,” the judge said while asking both parties to avoid making disparaging comments about the other online, continue their individual therapy and stay at least 100 feet away from each other.

During the hearing, Paul’s attorney argued that his client was a devoted mom who can provide plenty of space for her son.

“Ever is her entire life,” the lawyer claimed. “She’s been his primary, historic caretaker almost his entire life. … My client is not a danger to Ever.”

Mortensen’s attorney, meanwhile, said his client is in therapy and “trying to be a better dad for his son.”

Janel Parrish and ex-husband Chris Long have finalized their divorce — but neither will legally be considered single for months.

Parrish, 37, and Long revealed in a Monday, June 1, filing obtained by Us Weekly that “unhappy differences have arisen” between that pair that make it “impossible to live together as spouses.”

As such, the estranged couple separated on April 4, officially filing for divorce on April 28.

A judge ruled on Monday that Parrish and Long’s “dissolution of marriage” has been entered into the Superior Court of California County Los Angeles records.

The marital status will be “terminated” and Parrish and Long will be “restored” to single status on October 29, 2026, per the filing.

The exes’ divorce agreement revealed that “spousal support is waived by both parties.”

When it comes to marital assets, both Parrish and Long were awarded “all household furniture, furnishings, artwork, appliances, clothing, jewelry, personal effects, and personal property in [their] physical possession and control,” according to the court docs.

The Pretty Little Liars alum was also awarded her 2019 Audio SQ7, the checking and savings accounts in her name, as well as a pension, retirement and 401K listed in her name.

The exes agreed that Parrish will receive “any and all interests” in the project Sydney vs. Sean.

Long was awarded the checking and savings accounts in his name, pension, retirement and 401K in his name and “any and all equity interest in Apex Water and Process Inc.,” per the docs.

Parrish and Long, who wed in September 2018, will also keep “half interest” in their joint Los Angeles home and half of their Chase Joint Checking Account, which will be “divided” upon the sale of the California property.

The agreement confirmed that Long is currently living in the L.A. home, but plans to move out this month.

The former spouses agreed to list their shared residence by no later than June 19, which Us can confirm is listed as “coming soon” on Redfin for $3.299 million. The house has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a pool and two-car garage.

Parrish and Long were married for seven years before news broke of their split. The actress broke her silence on the breakup on April 10.

“Thank you all for the incredibly kind and supportive messages, they’ve truly meant the world,” she wrote via Instagram. “After 10 beautiful years together, including seven years of marriage, Chris and I made the difficult decision to end our marriage.”

Parrish has since moved on romantically with Dancing With the Stars pro Sasha Farber.

Mackenzie Shirilla is already complaining of cabin fever as she serves two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for double murder.

According to a jail audio call obtained by TMZ on Monday, June 1, Mackenzie, 21, complained to her mother, Natalie Shirilla, about her downtime behind bars. Mackenzie expressed frustration that she doesn’t have access to her commissary, an in-facility store that allows incarcerated individuals to purchase various items, including snacks, hygiene products, writing materials and more.

“How am I going to make this one book stretch?” Mackenzie asked, adding that she was not planning on “reading the same book over and over again.”

Mackenzie also told her mother that they need to “figure out this iPad s**t ASAP” so she can communicate with her mother and friends while in prison.

At one point in their conversation, Mackenzie — who has faced multiple disciplinary actions since her incarceration — complained about how slow the day was going for her.

“Like it’s only 3:30, how is it only 3:30?” she asked. “For real I did not even know it was 3:30 I thought it was like 5. It’s 3:30.”

When her mom asked if she could get a job in prison to help pass the time, Mackenzie claimed she didn’t think it was allowed.

“No, ‘cause of the charges that I have, they don’t let people with charges like me get jobs, so I’m told. I haven’t asked the staff yet though,” she said. “But I probably can’t get a f**king job cause I’m on the seventh floor. They’re probably not gonna let me get a job.”

Mackenzie shared that she was “so irritated” and wanted another book or cards to pass the time.

“Like literally there is nothing for me to do in my room, nothing,” she said.

Mackenzie is currently behind bars at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. She was convicted of 12 felony charges, including murder, during a 2023 bench trial after she drove her Toyota Camry at over 100 mph into a brick wall while her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan were passengers in the vehicle when she was 17.

Russo and Flanagan were not wearing seatbelts and died as a result of the accident. Mackenzie was the only one to survive despite sustaining severe injuries. Authorities, and later a judge, determined that Mackenzie had intentionally crashed the vehicle and purposefully caused the boys’ deaths.

Mackenzie, who tested positive for marijuana at the time of the incident, has maintained her innocence, claiming she cannot remember the crash. Her case entered the pop culture zeitgeist after it was the subject of the Netflix documentary The Crash.

Unfortunately for Mackenzie, her boredom behind bars is going to remain a constant as she is not eligible for parole until October 2037.
