Stargate’s Amanda Tapping Went Full Horror Movie, And It’s Perfect

Stargate's Amanda Tapping Went Full Horror Movie, And It's Perfect

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Amanda Tapping’s most well-known role is as Colonel Samantha Carter in the Stargate franchise, but after Stargate SG-1 finished, she went on to star in the SyFy original monster-hunting series, Sanctuary. As Helen Magnus, she was the head of a global network of secret facilities designed to house, treat, and study “abnormals.”

This meant a lot of running around after large, terrifying monsters, which is why the Season 1 episode, “Instinct,” works so well. Shot in the style of a found-footage horror movie, “Instinct” shows how a single encounter with an abnormal can be life-altering, and oh yes, when you don’t know what’s going on, the entire Sanctuary team comes off as being completely insane.

By now, fans had seen Helen’s team in action: Will (Robin Dunne) is the new guy, a forensic psychiatrist and her protege,  Henry (Ryan Robbins) is the tech guy and also a werewolf, while Ashley (Emille Ullerup) is Helen’s daughter (that always immediately raises questions when people find out) and the most accomplished fighter of the group. Seeing them through the perspective of TV weather girl Amy (Rekha Sharma) and her cameraman, Zach (Matty Finochio), turns the usual Sanctuary viewing experience on its head. After the two bystanders wander into a warehouse with a trapped monstrous abnormal inside, they learn of a world of myths and monsters that’s always been around them, and while Zach is impressed, Amy thinks this is the story that will make her career.

“Instinct” opens with the two groups running into each other and trying to find a way to coexist as Amy tries to get answers about the Sanctuary from the team, and Zach wants to get out in one piece. In one of the best moments, Zach is trying to eavesdrop on the team using the camera, when he hears Helen say that the monster is right behind him. Panicked, he turns around, sees nothing, turns back, and Helen is right there to chastise him for listening in.

After learning that the abnormal is a typically docile ancient Japanese beetle, they calm down until the lights go out, and we get the horror-movie shot of the abnormal lurking in the darkness, right over Helen’s shoulder. The head-on steadicam shots make “Instinct” look unlike any other episode of Sanctuary, and the episode takes full advantage of it by going for jumpscares whenever possible.

Sanctuary Was Ahead Of Its Time

Sanctuary was usually shot in a large, open studio with no real sets. Those were digitally added in later. For “Instinct,” the crew used an old Volvo warehouse, which gave the episode a cramped, claustrophobic feel. Intentionally shot to look like a single, continuous take, the episode was actually 40 long shots spliced together, but if you’ve seen any found-footage movies, you can tell where the splices happen.

Even though the series ran for four seasons, Sanctuary stayed under the radar the whole time, which is a shame, as it includes one of the strangest versions of Tesla, a vampire in the world of the series, and the best Jack the Ripper (Helen’s estranged husband). As expected for a show starring Amanda Tapping while she was moonlighting on Stargate Atlantis, there’s plenty of references to that other franchise, including Michael Shanks making a guest appearance, and in “Instinct,” an ARG prop is repurposed as a sonic gun.

Sanctuary’s quality level varies wildly from season to season, but “Instinct” is an early highlight for the show before it loses itself in its own mythology. Paying tribute to Cloverfield gave fans a chance to see the team a bit differently and to have some fun by seeing how insane Helen’s explanations behind abnormals sound when removed from the context of the Sanctuary itself. If you’ve never given the show a chance, fire it up on Tubi and let the familiar feeling of Canadian sci-fi wash over you.

FMegan Thee Stallion Klay Thompson Reaction 36th Birthday Bash Bone Thugs-N-Harmony videos

Megan Thee Stallion went all out for her man, Klay Thompson, with a birthday bash he’ll never forget! Thompson welcomed his 36th on Feb. 8, and this past weekend the couple went all the way up to celebrate. From a luxury beach picnic to Bone Thug-N-Harmony pulling up for a performance, Meg spared no expense to show her bae how she’s coming behind him!

Thee Stallion Celebrates Her Bae

As mentioned, the birthday festivities for Klay Thompson’s 36th seemed to start with a sweet beachside picnic for the couple. It’s unclear if Megan herself did the setup, but it impressed! And so did she, in a tight-fitting white-and-black polka-dot dress with a low-cut back. Meanwhile, her man was casual in a white, short-sleeve button-down and shorts. She filmed him as they walked along the beach to their picnic, which included a meat-and-cheese charcuterie board, fresh oysters on ice, and a fruit plate. At some point in the lunch date, Klay Thompson ended up taking a lil’ ocean swim. Peep the vibes below, starting at the 01:47 mark.

Then, came the big bash on Saturday (Feb. 7). Megan curated the event to Klay’s Thompson down to the entertainment. She surprised him with a performance by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, whom he previously told GQ was his favorite rap group growing up. From the videos circulating, it appears Klay had a BALL and even showed off some dance moves, solo and with his lady!

Social Media Is Loving This Megan-Klay Era

After The Shade Room reposted birthday bash footage, the roommates were eating UP Megan Thee Stallion’s apparent wifey energy. Will an engagement ring follow this? It looks like fans are hoping so, especially after seeing Megan and Klay slow dancing to BTNH’s ‘Crossroads.’

Roomie @calculatedopulence commented, “I watched this on mute and then realized they were slow dancing to crossroads. This I’m my official application for Flower Girl!”

@th_brunch_psychologist wrote, “What an amazing gift 🥰 I was literally listening to this today! My first rap concert I ever attended as a teen was BTNH 😍🔥This is an amazing gift for an 80s baby ☺️”

@dose_of_boujeee said, “They complement each other so well. And I love that he makes her look short.. I really hope we see some mini stallions 😍😍🥰🥰”

@elle_eddings added, “I’m here for all of it. I don’t care what anyone says! ❤️.”

@vaniareneau commented, “I really know all the words to this song and would’ve been in the front rapping with them 😂 Come on Klay for knowing all the words 👏🏾 They are too cute 🥰”

“Slow dancing to Crossroads is true love…,” @daboydame wrote.

Rapper Also Has Family’s Stamp Of Approval

And one thing about Megan, Klay isn’t the only Thompson man who loves her! Daddy Thompson, first name Mychal, is also here for his son’s lady, especially when she’s throwing down in the kitchen! In recent weeks, he told media that Meg is not only a “very nice lady,” but also makes the best BBQ baked beans he’s ever had in his life. When asked about a possible engagement between the couple, he deferred to not knowing, but he emphasized that she’s a “very lovely lady” who has the family’s approval.

‘Riot Women’ Sets the Stage for a Game-Changing Season 1 Finale in New Sneak Peek [Exclusive]

Published

on

Unique, powerful, strong, and timeless, if there’s one thing that Riot Women has taught us over its first season, it’s that dreams don’t have an expiration date. Today, ahead of the Season 1 finale, Collider is thrilled to once again pair with the hit BBC series and preview a bit of what’s to come for one of the band members in the upcoming installment. With its home network giving it the go-ahead for a second batch of episodes, the curtain won’t be closing on these gals anytime soon. Over the first season, we’ve watched the women fire up their punk band and take over the scene as well as our hearts thanks to a dynamite lineup of stars that includes Joanna Scanlan (No Offence), Rosalie Craig (The Pod Generation), Tamsin Greig (Belgravia), Lorraine Ashbourne (After the Flood) and Amelia Bullmore (Twenty Twelve).

In our sneak peek, the band is hitting the studio to lay down some tracks when bass player, Holly (Greig), is stunned into silence after crossing paths with someone from her past. To make matters worse, the familiar face of yesteryear is the band’s producer, which sends Holly into a tailspin of stumbling words and shaking hands. Upon finding out that she’s next in line to record, Holly has a full-on meltdown that attracts some raised eyebrows from the rest of her bandmates.

Holly’s recording studio freak-out is just one of the laugh-out-loud moments that Riot Women has brought to audiences during its first season. The synopsis for the project gives a closer look into the drama that’s unfolded so far, revealing:

“Set in Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, Riot Women centers around five women who come together to create a makeshift punk-rock band to enter a local talent contest. But when it comes to writing their first song, the women soon discover they have a lot more to say than they first thought. As they juggle life’s struggles, demanding jobs, grown-up children, ageing parents, ex-husbands and relationships, the band becomes a catalyst for change in all of their lives, and the ripple effect is seemingly never-ending. With each episode, a long-buried secret begins to surface, entangling the women in an unlikely and complex web that threatens to tear everything, including the band, apart.”

Meet the Faces Behind ‘Riot Women’

In addition to the primary group taking the stage and leading the musical charge, Riot Women also features supporting performances from the likes of Claire Skinner (The Trial), Sue Johnston (Downton Abbey), Peter Davison (All Creatures Great and Small), and Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax). The project is the latest to hail from Sally Wainwright, who previously secured massive amounts of critical acclaim thanks to the creation of other immediate hits, including Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley, and Gentleman Jack.

Check out our exclusive sneak peek at the Riot Women Season 1 finale above and catch the full episode on BritBox Wednesday, February 11.
