Dr. Torkian Reveals Why Filler Won’t Lift Your Face and What Creates a Snatched Look

Dr. Torkian Reveals Why Filler Won't Lift Your Face and What Creates a Snatched Look

Everyone wants a sculpted appearance, but according to celebrity plastic surgeon Dr. Behrooz Torkian, you might be surprised by what really delivers that look.

The Beverly Hills, California based plastic surgeon has spent the past 20 years specializing in facial rejuvenation and says if you’ve been told filler can lift your face, it’s time to rethink that advice.

Torkian Aesthetics

“For years we have been trying to bust the myth that fillers can lift skin or the face. They simply do not do that,” he tells ET. “Due to this wrongful belief, many patients have been overfilled with filler.”

Instead, he recommends solutions that truly address sagging skin.

“My practice is largely treatment of the aging face. One of the most requested procedures is treatment of the jowls and heavy necks. This was largely driven by the snatched look popularized by social media platforms, but with the increasing use of weight loss drugs, we are seeing more and more droopy lower faces as people lose fat. For this reason, my most requested procedures now are face and neck lift procedures,” he explains.

Torkian Aesthetics

While platforms like Instagram and TikTok have made cosmetic procedures more mainstream, Torkian says it’s important to separate trends from reality.

“Patients are by and large more educated by social media. They have a better understanding of procedures and better knowledge of expected results. Unfortunately, some people get misled by the results they see and believe that any result is possible with any starting point. Sadly, that is not the case, and this is often best discussed during a consultation with an honest surgeon.”

If you’re not ready to go under the knife just yet, there are plenty of in-office options that can help refresh and tighten the skin.

“Botulinum toxin administered on a regular basis is our usual first step and another one of our favorites is doing a combination of Virtue RF and CoolPeel to tighten and improve skin laxity and polish skin that is getting droopy and dull in the lower face.”

To enhance those effects even further, he recommends incorporating regenerative therapies.

“The addition of biostimulatory treatments using peptides, exosomes, stem cells, and other such products to our existing treatments can enhance rejuvenation treatments overall,” he notes.

Torkian Aesthetics

For anyone ready to dive face first into cosmetic surgery, subtlety is always the goal for Torkian.

“I always tell patients, ‘Let’s try not to get greedy’ when planning our aesthetic goals. Trying too hard to change features and change the structure of the face can quickly lead to very obviously surgical-looking results.”

His final piece of advice: Patience pays off.

“Come prepared with questions regarding healing and recovery so that you can proceed at a time that fits your life. Never rush a procedure into your schedule since you can never tell how you will feel and when you will feel comfortable resuming personal and social activities.”

Sidney Starr’s Arrest Leads To New Updates

According to TMZ, an Embassy Suites employee in Georgia contacted police to report an alleged assault involving a juvenile. Officers responded to the hotel, where they spoke with the minor and the minor’s parents. The male later told police that something had happened involving Sidney Starr.

TMZ also reported that Starr told officers that a tall Black male approached them in the hotel lobby and called them “cute” before allegedly striking up a conversation. Starr then reportedly told investigators that the male claimed he was an adult before going to the hotel room with them. Police later arrested Starr in connection with the incident. During a pat-down, officers reportedly found one opened condom and another condom inside Sidney’s pocket.

More Details About Sidney’s Arrest

As TSR previously reported, police arrested Sidney Starr in connection with allegations involving a minor on Sunday, August 2. Officers responded to a call at the Embassy Suites on 3450 International Boulevard before taking Starr into custody after investigating the incident. Following the arrest, Starr’s mugshot surfaced online after authorities booked them into the Fulton County Jail under the name Sidney Favors. Prosecutors have charged Starr with battery against a child, aggravated molestation, and sodomy. The Hapeville Police Department has also referred the case to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. At this time, authorities have not said whether Starr could face additional charges.

Starr Releases Statement Amid Charges

After the arrest, Sidney Starr spoke exclusively with TMZ and denied the allegations. The ‘Baddies’ star said they intend to fight the charges and defend themselves through legal process. Allegations should not be mistaken for fact, and public opinion should never replace due process,” Starr said. Starr also urged people to not use the allegations against them to stigmatize the transgender community, saying one person’s alleged actions should not define an entire group. Before ending the statement, Starr thanked supporters for their patience and asked for privacy as the legal case moves forward.

Martha Stewart, 85, Defends Anti-Plastic Surgery Views

Martha Stewart Recalls Being Struck By Lightning 3 Times and More Shocking Podcast Revelations

Martha Stewart has a few beauty tricks up her sleeve, but none of them have ever involved plastic surgery.

“I have good genes. My mom looked great at 95,” Stewart, 85, told People in her Wednesday, August 5, cover story, which recreated her 1995 photoshoot with the magazine in which she posed with one of her chickens.

“We eat well. We don’t drink very much. We don’t smoke. We eat healthy food. We exercise daily. I horseback-ride,” the home and hospitality icon continued.

When asked if she’s had any cosmetic procedures, Stewart noted, “I go to Dr. Dan Belkin in New York City. He is a very superb dermatologist. And I use a little bit of fillers. I go maybe once every four months for touch-ups.”

Martha Stewart is ready to share her memories of being struck by lightning not once but three times in her life. “The first time I was standing at my sink in a fabulous cottage in Massachusetts. I was washing dishes, and there was a pretty little garden that I had built out front, and there […]

The TV personality insisted, despite online speculation to the contrary, that she has “not had any plastic surgery at all.”

“I don’t think I need it,” she continued. “I do facial exercises and have the best facials from Mario Badescu and Georgia Louise. Peptides are very good. I take a few peptides. So that’s what I do. I’m more a maintenance kind of person. I’m not getting boobs done and hips and butts and stuff like that.”

Stewart’s comments came one day after she shared a steamy photo of herself spending time in a hot tub. The Martha Manual author wore a black swimsuit as she pursed her lips at the camera.

“I am going to use this amazing hot tub every single day I am in Maine,” she captioned the post, calling it “invigorating, restorative [and] therapeutic.”

Stewart has been adamant about her stance on plastic surgery for years. Back in 2023, she denied speculation about her cosmetic work after she posed on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

“I’ve had absolutely no plastic surgery whatsoever,” she told Variety at the time. “I have very healthy, good hair. I drink green juice every day. I take my vitamins. I eat very healthfully. I have very good skin doctors. I’m very careful in the sun. I wear hats and I wear sunblock every single day.”

In February 2024, Stewart said she uses Botox and facial fillers “very conservatively.”

Stewart addressed the claims again back in January.

“Everybody insists that I’ve had plastic surgery and I have not ever had plastic surgery,” she told People. “I’m the most honest person on earth — but if they won’t take my word for it, I don’t know. How can they not take my word for it? That’s the truth!”

Carmen Electra Reflects On ‘Difficult’ Dennis Rodman Marriage

Published

on

Dennis Rodman, Carmen Electra

Carmen Electra has made a candid confession about her short-lived marriage to NBA legend Dennis Rodman.

According to the actress, getting hitched to Rodman was “not the best choice,” as their union was just “difficult” due to the kind of people he had around him.

Carmen Electra previously admitted that she found the courage to end her relationship with her ex-husband after reading a “self-help” book.

The “Baywatch” star made the candid revelation about her marriage to Rodman while promoting her new FOX show, “Nation’s Dumbest.”

Reflecting on their brief time as husband and wife, Electra revealed that the people surrounding the NBA star created a deeply uncomfortable environment.

She noted that Rodman’s inner circle harbored suspicion toward her, assuming she was targeting his wealth. In reality, Electra was already financially independent and successful in her own right.

“I could definitely say marrying Dennis Rodman could have been, like, not the best choice,” Electra told Us Weekly.

She continued, “I mean, it was just difficult because he had people working for him that at that time were really weird, and they assumed that everyone was out for his money. And I had my own money. I wasn’t out for Dennis Rodman’s money.”

The actress then stated that she was working with MTV by the time she and Rodman got together and was living in her own home, implying that there’s no reason she would have had her sights set on the famous athlete’s money.

“By that time, I had been working with MTV, Baywatch. … I was working a lot,” Electra noted. “I was living in a really nice condo in Beverly Hills at the time that I paid for. Independent queen. I believe in that. I think that honestly, like, you’ve got to look at life that way.”

The Couple Divorced In 1999 As The Actress Found It ‘Hard’ To Keep Up With Dennis Rodman And His Friends’ Partying Ways

Electra and Rodman captured headlines in the late 1990s with their rapid-fire romance. The couple famously eloped at a Las Vegas chapel in November 1998 following a spontaneous, late-night decision.

However, the marital bliss was short-lived. Following a turbulent few months of dating on and off post-wedding, the duo officially ended their legal union when their divorce was finalized in April the following year.

During a recent appearance on the “Legally Guff” podcast, Electra shared that she had to end things with Rodman because “it was just too hard to continue to keep up with him and his friends.”

“I mean, it was constant drinking. And I just remember looking at myself in the mirror. I was at home, and I didn’t recognize myself,” she recalled. “I had bags under my eyes. My face was puffy. And I’m in my 20s, you know, and I thought like, it’s got to stop. It has to stop.”

Speaking more about their short-lived union, Electra revealed a friend introduced her to a book which ultimately gave her the push she needed to end her marriage with Rodman.

She said that the book made her think about her life and how nothing good was going to come out of her romance with Rodman.

“And a friend gave me a really good book, and it was like a self-help book, and I started reading the book, and I liked it,” Electra recalled.

She continued, “So I went to the store … and I’d grab another book, and I’d start sitting there, and I just thought, ‘I got to get away from him because what good is going to come out of this,’ you know?”

Electra, however, stressed that she and Rodman were genuinely in love, but the relationship became too “difficult” for her, and they ultimately had to go their separate ways.

“I mean, it was real love,” she said. “It wasn’t a made-up story. It wasn’t a publicity stunt. It was real love. And you know, it’s sad, but it had to end.”

The Actress Reveals The Mistake Men Make When Chasing After Older Women

In a recent interview, Electra peeled back the curtain on modern romance, sharing her perspective on finding love in later chapters of life and her ultimate dating dealbreakers.

For the actress, the foundation of any healthy relationship comes down to good communication. She, however, warned men against the pitfalls of impulsive, late-night invitations, noting that a midnight request for an immediate meetup is a huge turn-off.

“We do appreciate texting or calling appropriately,” she said. “What you really need to do is make sure you don’t call her and say, ‘Hey, come meet me at a bar right now,’ when it’s midnight. That’s a huge no-no.”

Beyond dating, the ’90s star offered a powerful message of empowerment to women rebuilding their lives after a divorce.

She urged them to view their 40s and beyond as a vibrant era for self-discovery and joy, reminding them that they “need to go have fun, keep having fun, and live your life.”

Carmen Electra On What Keeps The ‘Spark Alive’ In A Relationship

In a conversation with Fox News Digital earlier this year, Electra explained that genuine admiration for a partner’s character is “definitely what’s gonna keep the spark alive anyway.”

For the actress, passion is a massive draw as she finds herself naturally attracted to creative souls who pour their energy into artistic or musical endeavors.

Besides her romance with Rodman, Electra was also romantically linked to music legend Prince from 1990 to 1991, and Simon Cowell from 2012 to 2013.

‘Grim Reaper’ Hospital Prank Ends In Jail

Published

on

Grim Reaper costume

A “Grim Reaper” prank outside a hospital ended with handcuffs instead of laughs.

Leon Gillespie triggered an alarm by dressing as the popular Halloween costume and silently staring at patients outside a medical center, leaving visitors unsettled and prompting authorities to step in.

Leon Gillespie, who previously gained viral attention for similar “Grim Reaper” appearances, now faces legal consequences after the latest incident reignited debate over whether some pranks go too far, especially when carried out near vulnerable people seeking medical care.

Patients and staff at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital in Rhyl, UK, were left alarmed after Leon Gillespie climbed onto the roof dressed as the “Grim Reaper” while carrying what appeared to be a large scythe. The 26-year-old reportedly stood silently overlooking the hospital, unsettling those below before the bizarre incident eventually landed him in court.

According to a post shared by Fact Philes on Instagram, Gillespie later claimed he had not been dressed as the “Grim Reaper” at all, insisting he was portraying a crow. The court nevertheless fined him over the incident and also penalized him for separate theft offenses involving cat food and kitty litter.

The unusual case quickly sparked a flood of reactions online. One user joked, “I’d like to know under which law he was arrested because this is freaking hilarious,” while another wrote, “QUESTION: What did they charge him with??” Others reflected on the absurdity of the story, with one commenter adding, “I can’t believe we are the new adults .”

Court Rejects Unusual Defense

After spending nearly an hour on the hospital roof, Gillespie was eventually brought down and later appeared before a Welsh court to answer for the incident. Prosecutors charged the 26-year-old with causing a nuisance or disturbance on National Health Service property without a reasonable excuse after he allegedly refused to leave when directed by police.

During the hearing, Gillespie insisted his costume was never meant to resemble the “Grim Reaper.” Instead, he claimed he had dressed as a crow, despite wearing a black hooded outfit and carrying what appeared to be a long blade while overlooking the hospital grounds.

The unusual explanation failed to change the outcome. Gillespie admitted to the nuisance charge and was fined over the incident, with it being reported that the court ultimately held him responsible for the disruption caused by the rooftop stunt.

Leon Gillespie’s Court Appearance Also Exposed Earlier Theft Offenses

The hospital incident was not the only matter addressed during Gillespie’s court appearance. Proceedings also revealed that he had committed two separate shoplifting offenses before climbing onto the hospital roof, adding another layer to the case.

Gillespie admitted to stealing cat food and kitty litter from a pet shop in Llandudno in March, and taking more items from a nearby supermarket in May. The offenses were taken into consideration at the hearing in conjunction with the hospital disturbance.

The North Wales Pioneer reported that Gillespie was ordered to pay separate financial penalties for the theft offenses in addition to the fine imposed for causing a nuisance at the hospital, bringing multiple legal issues to a close in the same court appearance.

A Different ‘Grim Reaper’ Encounter Left A Lasting Impression Online

Before Leon Gillespie’s hospital stunt went viral, another “Grim Reaper” encounter became one of the internet’s most memorable events years ago. The earlier video was made for a harmless social experiment to record the reactions of strangers, not like the incident in Wales.

A man, referred to online as Albert Scotsen, was among those who were featured, with his response being different from the others. He didn’t jump in fear or surprise, but took the masked face as though he recognized it, a moment many viewers viewed as a statement of acceptance, aging, and death.

The video, later shared widely on Facebook, continued to resonate long after its initial release because of that unexpected exchange. Online accounts have since claimed the man died from cancer later that year, a detail that prompted many viewers to revisit the clip as a reminder of how even a lighthearted prank can take on a much deeper meaning over time.

Another Prank Gone Wrong Ends With Consequences

MEGA

While many elaborate pranks are designed to entertain, some have crossed the line into legal trouble, public outrage, or even courtroom battles. Gillespie’s hospital rooftop stunt has now joined a growing list of incidents where attempts at shock value resulted in consequences far beyond what may have been intended.

The entertainment industry has seen similar disputes over prank-related stunts. The Blast previously reported that “Jackass” star Johnny Knoxville faced legal action after one of the franchise’s hidden-camera pranks allegedly left a participant claiming he suffered emotional distress and lasting psychological harm, underscoring how even seemingly humorous stunts can carry significant repercussions.

As Leon Gillespie’s case continues to spark debate online over where the line between a prank and public nuisance should be drawn, will the bizarre hospital rooftop stunt be remembered as a harmless joke or a lesson in how quickly viral moments can spiral into legal trouble?

Kyle Richards Wants to ‘Repair’ Friendship With Dorit Kemsley

Published

on

Everything to Know About RHOSLC Alum Jen Shah's Legal Drama

Kyle Richards has one thing on her mind for next season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: making up with Dorit Kemsley.

“If I’m coming back, let’s just say that part first. You know that I would repair things with Dorit,” Kyle, 57, told Us exclusively at the Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th launch event on Tuesday, August 4, at the Lobster Club in New York City. “I would like to be able to put that behind us and start over and maybe get some things off my mind, some things that people had done and said this last season.”

Kyle added that she has not heard from Dorit, 50, but she did reach out to “congratulate her” for the release of her memoir, Unburdened, which dropped in June.

“Other than that, no, I haven’t heard from her or anything,” Kyle told Us.

According to Kyle, Dorit is still an important person in her life, and she wants to be there for her one-time BFF amid her divorce from PK Kemsley.

“It’s sad to me because, you know, I did care about her, and I do care about her and her family,” she told Us. “I just feel like we’re both going through so much and that we would have been much better off leaning on each other.”

Dorit and Kyle have had a lot of ups and downs in their friendship over the years. The pair experienced their first crack during RHOBH season 13 when Dorit expressed concerns that Kyle was prioritizing other friends over her. Dorit also showed a message from Kyle on camera, where Kyle wrote that it “bothers” her to be in a “weird place” with Dorit.

“They don’t even know we are going through a hard time so I don’t see the need to bring it up there,” the message continued. “I should have said something sooner but I honestly haven’t been strong enough. But relationships and YOU are more important to me than RHOBH.”

The tension between Kyle and Dorit carried over to season 14, as Kyle expressed that she was unhappy with Dorit for sharing their private messages.

“I didn’t have it in me to deal with it because I had so many things on my plate,” Kyle said during the premiere episode in 2025, noting that she was “shocked” when Dorit read their text message during the season 13 reunion. “She tried to publicly embarrass me.”

Kyle also shared that she was still in touch with PK, which upset Dorit. Kyle broke down in tears over the situation after being confronted by Dorit.

“I’m f***ing leaving,” an emotional Kyle told Dorit. “Please, OK. I love you and PK and your kids and you know that. I know that you know that. I’ve been made to feel like I did something wrong — sending a text to PK. So, I said I’m gonna read this once and that is it.”

When RHOBH returned for season 15 — which included a blowout fight during a cast trip to Italy — Kyle and Dorit found themselves not on speaking terms.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Dorit Kemsley and costar Kyle Richards have not mended their friendship despite their respective splits. “I did feel very abandoned by Kyle,” Dorit, 48, exclusively told Us Weekly. “There were a lot of things that were left unsaid from the reunion, and I was struggling with that because […]

“She’s not open-minded to listening to you, and when she has something in her head, that’s it,” Kyle told Us of her and Dorit’s issues in December 2025. “It’s really frustrating to try to have a conversation with her. Unfortunately, we tried to fix things, and it was like two steps forward, three steps back.”

Dorit, meanwhile, also shared that she is open to reconciling with Kyle.

“Listen, I think you need two people. Any type of resolve, you need two people. And I’ve always said that,” Dorit told Extra in May. “And I’ve also always said because truly I’m the type of person where there’s nothing that you can’t get over if two people want to and I’m always open to it.”

10 Best Adventure Movies in Film History

Published

on

Lin looking at Chihiro at the bathhouse in Spirited Away

If there’s any one genre that has been delivering some of history’s greatest films for as long as the medium has been employed for storytelling, it’s the adventure genre. From classic silent short films like Georges MélièsA Trip to the Moon to modern blockbusters of the size of Dune: Part Two, the best adventure movies in film history have gone down as some of the greatest motion pictures ever made, regardless of genre.

The wonderful thing about adventure cinema is how tremendously versatile it is. We can be talking about a grand space opera, a gritty urban action movie, or a high fantasy epic of unprecedented proportions. Regardless, we’re talking about film history’s greatest, most important, most groundbreaking, and most influential adventure movies.

‘Dune: Part Two’ (2024)

Frank Herbert‘s Dune is far more than just a great space opera: It’s nothing short of one of the greatest and most influential science fiction novels of the 20th century, and as such, fans’ jaws were left on the floor when Denis Villeneuve proved capable of delivering such a high-quality film adaptation in 2021. But as great as the first Dune was, it’s Dune: Part Two that will likely be remembered as one of the best sci-fi films in history a few decades from now.

It is, at the very least, one of the best sci-fi movies of the last 10 years, one whose grand quest across the desert planet of Arrakis also makes it a masterful adventure film. Visually stunning, elevated greatly by Hans Zimmer‘s best score in years, and perfect in how it translates Herbert’s cautionary tale against the dangers of charismatic messianic leaders, it’s a flawless marriage between Herbert’s imagination and Villeneuve’s powerful vision.

Hayao Miyazaki is not only the poster boy of Studio Ghibli, but arguably the king of anime filmmaking as a whole. He has made several of the best animated adventure movies of all time, but there’s really no question as to which one is the best of them all: It has to be Spirited Away, one of the best family movies since 2000 and probably even the single greatest animated film of the 21st century.

It’s one of the most hauntingly atmospheric, visually gorgeous, and thematically complex animated adventure movies of all time. Far more than just a simple coming-of-age story, it’s a technically perfect and wonderfully-directed gem elevated by some of the strongest world-building and character development ever seen in an animated film.

‘The Wages of Fear’ (1953)

The French-Italian masterpiece The Wages of Fear, directed Henri-Georges Clouzot, is no traditional adventure movie. It’s one of the most intense movies of the 1950s, a high-octane road thriller that’s an absolute masterpiece in how to build suspense. Anybody who loves adventure films at their most tense ought to consider Wages of Fear essential viewing.

What really sets the film apart is that aside from being nail-bitingly entertaining, it also has a philosophical edge not often seen in adventure blockbusters. Blending perfectly-paced action with biting satire, it’s an existentialist meditation on capitalist exploitation that has aged like fine wine in virtually every sense imaginable.

7

‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (1981)

If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones, because there is no adventure movie that represents the genre more iconically than Steven Spielberg‘s Raiders of the Lost Ark. Far more than just one of the best-made popcorn movies of all time, this action-adventure masterpiece is pretty much the face of the adventure genre as a whole.

It’s one of the most fun action movies of all time, led by the single most iconic adventurer in the genre’s history. Balancing pulpy action with clever set pieces, John Williams‘ timeless score, Harrison Ford‘s legendary performance, and an engrossing story, it’s a perfect blockbuster that’s easily among the most entertaining pieces of movie magic in the art form’s history.

6

‘The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980)

Back when George Lucas released Star Wars in 1977, it’s anyone’s guess whether he had any idea of the multimedia pop-cultural behemoth that he was creating. And yet, all these many years later, after decades’ worth of Star Wars media—from movies to books to video games and beyond—, fans typically still agree that the best installment of the bunch is The Empire Strikes Back, now retroactively known as Episode V.

Part science fiction and part fantasy, this adventure masterpiece is irresistibly entertaining from start to finish. Perfectly paced, perfectly imaginative, and elevated by some of the most stunning production values that 20th-century cinema ever saw, it’s the space opera par excellence for a reason. Simply put, no science fantasy film has ever been more timeless than the tale of Luke Skywalker rising to face the Empire as a Jedi once and for all.

5

‘Back to the Future’ (1985)

Robert ZemeckisBack to the Future is irrefutable proof that a science fiction film doesn’t need to be high art in order to be absolutely perfect. One of the best sci-fi comedy movies of all time, this adventure movie gem is one of the most timeless and irresistibly charming blockbusters in Hollywood history, the kind that everyone should watch at least once in their lives.

The whole trilogy is a classic for a reason, but there’s just no beating the original. Delightfully creative, full of life-or-death stakes, and packed with some of the most iconic scenes and set pieces in modern Hollywood film history, Back to the Future is a masterclass in pretty much every single department of blockbuster filmmaking.

4

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ (2003)

Tied with Ben-Hur and Titanic as the most Oscar-winning motion picture in history (with a whopping 11 victories), Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is not only the perfect way of ending such a perfect fantasy movie trilogy, but also far and away one of the best adventure movies since 2000. Fans of J. R. R. Tolkien‘s source material couldn’t have possibly predicted that a film adaptation could work this well.

Perfection when it comes to all forms of art is, of course, a highly subjective thing. But if there’s any one adventure movie that comes so remarkably close to perfection that it’s almost undeniable, it’s Return of the King. Exciting, emotional, action-packed, creative, and perfectly written and directed from beginning to credits, it’s one of the greatest epics in the history of cinema.

The best films leave a mark. What kind of mark do you want?

The Academy Has Decided
Your Perfect Film Is…
Advertisement

Your answers have pointed to one Oscar Best Picture winner above all others. This is the film that was made for the way your mind works.

Parasite

You are drawn to films that operate on multiple levels simultaneously — that begin in one genre and quietly, brilliantly migrate into another. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a film about class, desire, and the architecture of inequality that manages to be darkly funny, deeply suspenseful, and genuinely shocking across a single extraordinary running time. Your instinct is for cinema that hides its true intentions until the moment it’s ready to reveal them. Parasite is exactly that — a film that rewards close attention and punishes assumptions, right up to its devastating final image.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

You want it all — and this film gives you all of it. The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of the most maximalist films ever made: action comedy, multiverse sci-fi, family drama, existential crisis, and a genuinely earned emotional core that sneaks up on you amid the chaos. You are someone who responds to ambition, who doesn’t want cinema to choose between being entertaining and being meaningful. This film refuses that choice entirely. It is overwhelming by design, and its overwhelming nature is precisely the point — because the feeling of being crushed by infinite possibility is exactly what it’s about.

Oppenheimer

You are drawn to cinema on a grand scale — films that understand history not as a backdrop but as a force, and that place their characters inside that force and watch what happens. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a film about the terrifying gap between what we can do and what we should do, told with the full weight of one of the most consequential moments in human history behind it. You want your films to feel important without feeling self-important — to earn their ambition through sheer craft and the gravity of their subject. Oppenheimer does exactly that. It is enormous, complicated, and refuses easy comfort.

Birdman

You are drawn to films that foreground their own construction — that make the how of the filmmaking part of the what it’s about. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, shot to appear as a single continuous take, is cinema examining itself through the cracked mirror of a fading actor’s ego. You respond to formal daring, to the feeling that a film is doing something that probably shouldn’t be possible. Michael Keaton’s performance and Emmanuel Lubezki’s restless camera create something genuinely unlike anything else — a film that is simultaneously about creativity, relevance, self-destruction, and the impossibility of ever truly knowing if your work means anything at all.

No Country for Old Men

You are drawn to cinema that trusts silence, that refuses to explain itself, and that treats dread as a form of meaning. The Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men is a film about the arrival of a new kind of evil — implacable, arbitrary, and utterly indifferent to the moral frameworks we use to make sense of the world. It is one of the most formally controlled films ever made, and its controlled restraint is what makes it so terrifying. You want your films to haunt you, not comfort you. You are not interested in resolution if resolution would be dishonest. No Country for Old Men is honest in a way that most cinema never dares to be.

‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968)

Stanley Kubrick is still regarded by many as the greatest filmmaker in history, and all it takes is one look at 2001: A Space Odyssey to understand why. It’s probably Kubrick’s greatest masterpiece, a space opera so beautifully poetic and slow-burning that it almost borders on being arthouse. Complex, philosophical, and wonderfully artistic, it’s a must-see for anyone and everyone who loves sci-fi adventures.

There’s something here for pretty much everyone: Exciting set pieces, introspective moments of thematic exploration, wonderful music, striking production values, and several mind-bending moments that make re-watches pretty much obligatory. It’s one of the most complete and well-rounded explorations of human nature that either the sci-fi or adventure genres have ever produced for the big screen.

2

‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962)

Lawrence of Arabia - 1962 (7) Image via Columbia Pictures

There’s a very strong argument to be made that David Lean was the greatest director of cinematic epics in history, and as proof, there’s also a very strong argument to make that Lawrence of Arabia is the greatest epic film of all time. It is, at least, one of the best movie masterpieces of the last 100 years, a war biopic unlike anything else that cinema had seen before or has seen since.

What makes Lawrence of Arabia such an elegantly unique adventure movie is that while its four-hour-long narrative is undeniably vast in scale, its scope is so surprisingly intimate and character-driven that those four hours end up feeling like much less. There are grand, thrilling, masterfully-produced combat set pieces here, but also a richly detailed exploration of T. E. Lawrence‘s psyche flawlessly anchored by Peter O’Toole‘s exceptional debut as a leading man.

1

‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ (1989)

As exceptional and timeless as Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is almost undoubtedly the most iconic installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, may be, it’s Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade that is arguably the single greatest adventure movie in film history. This is a genre that’s all about excitement, the wonders of discovery, and the thrill of a good quest, and Last Crusade offers all of that and more.

It’s one of the most entertaining movies of the 1980s, a blockbuster masterpiece made perfectly by the king of Hollywood blockbusters. Bringing Sean Connery on as Indy’s father was far more than just a cute gimmick: The relationship between these two characters serves as the heart and soul of Last Crusade, making it a film as beautifully emotional as it is incredibly exciting. The action sequences are thrilling, the character moments are deeply moving, and the whole thing stands out as the peak of the adventure cinematic genre.
