There are very few characters Hollywood will stop reinventing, and Sherlock Holmes is always near the top of that list. Young Sherlock could easily have felt like just another spin on a familiar brand, but the early response suggests it has found a real audience of its own. The series has become one of Prime Video’s biggest current global titles, which tells you viewers were more than willing to try a younger, rawer version of the iconic detective. It also helps that the show comes with a strong adventure hook instead of just coasting on name recognition.

The series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes, alongside Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Zine Tseng, Colin Firth, Dónal Finn, and Max Irons. Prime Video’s official setup follows a disgraced young Sherlock who becomes tangled in a murder case that threatens his freedom and pulls him into a globe-trotting conspiracy that changes his life forever. That’s a very clean, very playable premise for a broad audience mystery thriller.

How Good Is ‘Young Sherlock’?

Across the board, reviews have been universally glowing. CBR’s Nicholas Brooks highlighted the show’s approach to a younger Sherlock, noting:

“The best part is that there’s no worry of any trivial drama that comes with a prequel focusing on a younger hero.”

The review also singles out the chemistry between the two leads and, while Brooks acknowledged there are “still some holes in the execution,” the review ultimately praised the show’s tone and stakes:

“Through this energetic and charismatic pair, the show embarks on a mystery that is mature through and through, and helps establish that while the show is called Young Sherlock, there’s nothing young about it. The stakes are high, the action is top-notch, and death is always right around the corner.”

ScreenRant’s Ben Gibbons was similarly enthusiastic, writing:

“Overall, Young Sherlock is an incredibly clever and imaginative retelling of a classic story that manages to preserve the best aspects of the source material, while also boldly breaking new ground and redefining the characters involved.”

Meanwhile, Collider’s Therese Lacson also delivered a positive verdict, noting:

“Though it’s far from the most loyal adaptation, what Young Sherlock lacks in accuracy to the source material, it makes up for in pure entertainment.”

Before there was Indiana Jones, there was the 1939 classic movie, Gunga Din. The character at the heart of the franchise we know and love is a homage to the swashbuckling heroes of the 1930s and 40s, with Gunga Din so much at the heart of the tribute that one of Dr. Jones’s adventures challenges the same enemies. In 1999, Gunga Din was included in the United States National Film Registry in recognition of its historic contribution to cinema.

Gunga Din is based on a poem by Rudyard Kipling about a brave Indian water bearer who saves a British Army soldier, despite the soldier treating the Indian with colonial contempt and derision. The poem is told from the soldier’s perspective and salutes the water bearer who gave his life to save the soldier’s.

Attack Of The Thuggee Cult

In the movie, there are three soldiers: Cutter, Ballantine, and MacChesney, all close friends and adventuresome enlistees in the British Army, serving in India in the late 1800s. Cutter, played by the classic leading man Cary Grant, is a fortune hunter who is constantly getting into trouble as he seeks treasure in the Indian countryside. MacChesney is in charge of the company’s elephants, including one named Annie, who he treats like his own baby. Ballantine, much to his friends’ dismay, announces that he is leaving the service at the encroaching end of his tour to get married and go into the tea business.

Nevertheless, none of these men are afraid to get into a tumble, so when a British outpost suddenly goes silent, they are sent with troops to investigate. Their group is attacked by the mysterious Thuggee, thought to be a cult to the Hindu death goddess Kali. The squad is nearly decimated, and the British Army has to figure out how to deal with the Thuggee terrorists.

Chemistry Carries The Movie

Lurking on the sidelines is Gunga Din, the titular water bearer, who desperately wants to be a soldier himself. Cutter takes a liking to him, and in return, he tells Cutter about a golden temple in the mountains, igniting the soldier’s lust for treasure. But the quest for fortune and glory brings Cutter and his friends more than they bargained for and could lead to the defeat of the British Army.

The chemistry of the three stars, the smarmy Cary Grant, the burly Victor MacLaglen, and the heartthrob Douglas Fairbanks Jr., is a great deal of what carries the movie, despite it being named for the water bearer. Their behavior toward each other is a dance of manly social maneuvering, complete with teasing, tricking, stealing from, and even fighting with one another, but always loyal to each other to the end.

The Ultimate Boys Action-Adventure Movie

At its heart, Gunga Din is a boy’s action-adventure film about Army guys getting into fantastic adventures. The film also stars contemporary female lead Joan Fontaine, but it is no accident that Annie the Elephant gets more screen time. Even Ballantine has no time for sissy girls when the going gets tough. It is a masterpiece of male bonding, with the trio’s hijinks punctuated by their interactions with one another and how well they know each other, especially in the midst of a fight.

And Gunga Din has a lot of fighting: fistfights, explosive skirmishes, and the final high-stakes battle that pulls out all the stops. Don’t be fooled by the early-Hollywood special effects, because Gunga Din was a large-scale production that was revolutionary for its time. However, it is also very family-friendly despite all the action, since it reflected early Hollywood sensibilities about depicting violence.

A California Adventure

Although the movie was shot entirely in California, its cinematography is so magical that it seamlessly transports the viewer to India’s northwest frontier, so much so that Fairbanks, Jr. once observed that Indian people he met in his travels believed the film was shot in their homeland. From wide shots of mountain vistas and drilling troops in martial exercises to intimate scenes of murder and male bonding, the movie’s camera work is so celebrated that it is studied in film schools to this day and has been required viewing on numerous film sets.

However, Gunga Din is also a product of its time. The role of Gunga Din is played by Sam Jaffe, who is not Indian, nor are the major Indian characters, the Guru or Chota, played by Indian actors. All three wear blackface in the film. This should be taken as a byproduct of the era, not a condemnation of the film, but less educated viewers might judge it harshly through a modern lens.

Gunga Din’s Similarities To Indiana Jones

It’s easy to see this movie echoed throughout the adventures of Indiana Jones. Temple of Doom shares many plot elements and characteristics with Gunga Din, and not just because they share a villainous organization in the Thuggee cult. There are numerous references to events concurrent with the earlier film, including entire characters that are tributes to its ideas: a British soldier defends the Empire’s colonialism, while a mad guru leads the Thuggee in their terrible plan.

Stephen Spielberg has repeatedly said that Temple of Doom is his least favorite film in the franchise, calling the 1984 sequel too dark and horrific and saying it “out-poltergeist-ed Poltergeist.” This is disappointing because Temple of Doom is a loving tribute to the film that inspired it, putting Indiana Jones into the role of Cutter as he seeks “fortune and glory” by hunting down the Shankara Stones for a small Indian village. From there, the adventure Indy and his friends go on is, in essence, the same one as Cutter and Din’s trek out to the golden temple.

Unfortunately, Gunga Din is not streaming free on any major services. However, it can be streamed for a fee on Amazon, and it’s well worth buying the DVD, especially since it is a fun movie for the whole family.

Gunga Din created the framework for most of the action-adventure movies you love today. Best of all, it’s endlessly rewatchable as a self-contained, neatly wrapped package that requires no embellishment, gritty remake, or computer-generated action.

Summer House star KJ Dillard was perhaps baffled to see his housemates West Wilson and Amanda Batula packing on the PDA at the Friday, April 17, New York Yankees game.

“Sickos,” Dillard wrote via Threads on Friday, adding, “I just threw up in my mouth.”

Batula and Wilson made waves across the Bravoverse late last month when they confirmed that they started dating after Summer House season 10.

“We’ve seen the growing online speculation, so while this is still very new, we wanted to provide some clarity. It was never our intention to purposely hide anything,” West and Batula wrote in a joint March 31 statement. “Given the complicated relationship dynamics involved and the scrutiny that comes with being on a reality show, we needed a little space to process things privately before speaking on it.”

They continued, “We’ve shown up for each other as friends over the years, through all the highs and lows, and what’s developed recently was the last thing either of us expected. Miller, 30, broke her silence just hours before the Yankees game.

“It’s one thing to experience hurt behind closed doors,” Miller told Glamour in a Friday profile. “To experience it so publicly is like another layer, and then to have to see what you thought was your life still play out in season 10. It’s a major mindf***.”

Ambyr Childers has no regrets about moving her life from Los Angeles to Montana while weathering a high-profile split, her sobriety and reconnecting with a higher power.

In the wake of her divorce from producer Randall Emmett — they called it quits in 2017 after years of rumors of his affair with Vanderpump Rules’ Lala Kent — Childers, 37, was struggling. She self-medicated her anxiety and depression with alcohol and Xanax, and when she realized numbing out wasn’t working, she realized she needed a change — and she got sober.

“There was a lot of grief that I didn’t feel post-divorce and and now I do. I have these moments where I’m able to grieve and I allow myself that without having to chase something that’s going to push that grief down,” Childers tells Us Weekly. “So now, I cry a lot, and when I cry I remind myself, ‘This is me thawing.’ I’m just healing and it’s a beautiful thing.”

Childers’ self-discovery quest led her to Montana where she lives with her and Emmett’s daughters: London, 16, and Rylee, 12. Now, she’s rediscovering her love for acting with roles in projects such as the upcoming biker drama Born to Lose, her “An Unlikely Affair” podcast with Kent (more on that below) and a reinvigorated outlook on this next chapter in life, which is focused on “healing and coming home” to herself.

“That was a big part of my move to Montana — I needed a place of quiet. Los Angeles had gotten really loud for me internally and externally,” Childers recalls. “I needed a place to hear myself again.”

Childers credits the change for helping her “surrender” to what is meant for her, adding, “It’s helped me with my sobriety, and it’s helped me rebuild myself in a really honest way. It’s like rebuilding a version of yourself that you actually enjoy being with.”

Childers breaks down her emotional healing journey — and her return to acting and the public eye — here:

How did you know it was time to leave Los Angeles?
It’s just simplifying life sometimes — to get in touch with your inner self. I haven’t been able to just really hear myself and forgive myself and love myself and reflect on my mistakes that I’ve made [until now].

When did you start considering the move?
I’d been in L.A. for 16 years. Last year, I woke up and it was a voice that was like, “You have to get out. You’re suffocating.” I just kept getting this spiritual intuition screaming at me, like, “You have to leave.”

Why Montana?
My sister [moved] to Bozeman, and I was like, “Huh, I’ve never been to Montana. Sounds boring.” I took one of my daughters to visit … and I’ll never forget the feeling when I landed. I looked around and said to myself, “You need to be here. There’s something here that is magical.” That’s the gift of sobriety: being able to hear your intuition without it being clouded.

After your run on You in 2019, you took a break.

Acting is my first love. It’s brought me back to myself and helped me fall in love with the art. What I do for a living — and everything that I do now — is coming from a more pure place.

I’m trying to be a lot more intentional with what I go out for. I have teenagers. It’s important for me to be there for them, but they also need to see Mom work. It’s really important to follow my dreams, to be excited about what I do, choosing stories and characters that inspire me. I’m not moving and acting out of desperation or need. I’m moving from a place of curiosity and being an artist.

How has your view on the roles you want to take shifted?
I’m taking back my narrative. There’s projects that I have in development, there are projects that I’m creating and it feels really good because these are the stories that I want to tell.

I always tell people that I love to work with people that are better than me. I want to be the most inexperienced person on that set because I feel like I have so much to learn. Life is short, let’s have some fun.

Talk to Us about coming back with Born to Lose.

There’s this thing about indie filmmaking that I love. You’re doing it on a budget so people are showing up to work because they believe in the film. It’s coming from a place of authentic creativity instead of ego.

I also have a project with Lala that we are working on right now. This is the foundation of a new chapter for me. It is now telling my story in a very beautiful and artistic way.

You are getting back into telling other people’s stories — what about your own?
One of the most profound things that Lala has made me realize is that at the end of the day, my story is the most important one. I need to care about it as much as I care about my other characters that I’ve played or going to play.

There’s the passion but also the anxiety, which is just fear. It’s grief that I haven’t let myself feel for so long and now I could actually sit in the grief.

It sounds like you are reclaiming your voice.
I feel reconnected to who I am. I started acting when I was eight years old and over the years you end up putting this gap between who you are and what you want to become. My gift is from my higher power. I’ve been given this and it’s my duty to to use my gift of art and expression to inspire people, to teach people, to help other people. I want to be of service to other people in whatever way I can.

Do you think the Montana move will be permanent?
I’m not trying to control anything in my life. That’s another gift of sobriety. It’s just complete acceptance and surrender. If you’d told me five years ago that I was going to be sober, move to Montana and start a podcast with my ex-husband’s mistress, I would have been like, “Are you out of your mind?” But that’s the beauty of life.

Speaking of your friendship with Lala, how did you get there?
What’s most meaningful about that relationship is that we didn’t stay in the pain of what life has dealt us or our choices. We both made a choice to stay grounded, to stay accountable and to meet each other from a place of honesty. It takes a lot of self reflection and that’s what makes our friendship real.

Talk to Us about the decision to work together on the “An Unlikely Affair” podcast.

People already knew our story. So I wanted to share where we were. I don’t want people to think, ”Look what happened to their relationship”. No, it is, ‘Look where they took their relationship”. This is what our life looks like.

Just listening to your podcast, it also sounds like you were able to create this blended family.
For me, Lala was a stranger and then she became a mistress and then an acquaintance. Now I love her like a sister.

Women are really mean to each other and it really breaks my heart. I feel like it’s part of my responsibility to share what I’ve learned and what I’ve experienced.

There’s a lot that she’s taught me, and I hope to do the same. I hope there’s a lot of healing for her. My kids love Ocean [Kent’s 5-year- old daughter with Emmett]. They’re sisters … I want them to feel connected

When it comes to your ex-husband, how did the two of you get to a better place for the sake of your kids?
I got married really young but divorce taught me to take responsibility for my life, my choices, my boundaries and what I’m willing to accept. It showed me that love without self respect is not sustainable and I can honestly say that I didn’t respect myself. I learned how to stop abandoning myself and start showing up in an honest way.

It gave me clarity post divorce of who I am, what I need and how I want to live and how I want to show up in the world. Also how I want to show up in my next relationship and how I can model a good relationship for my daughters.

I’m really thankful for that part of my life. I don’t regret it at all. I have two beautiful, funny kids that bring me so much joy every day.

How is coparenting going?
You coparent the best you can, and it’s not perfect. There are days that are easier than others. I want my kids to see a healthy dynamic between my ex and I.

How is dating in Montana different from Los Angeles?
We’re having a crisis in the dating world today. It doesn’t matter where you are, it’s just tough. I wasn’t on the dating apps for a long time and I’ve met some really great guys and also some guys that I’m not for and they’re not for me. Dating teaches you about yourself. I never knew that you and so now here I am with my career, my sobriety and my children in first position of my life.

If I meet someone great, I definitely know what I’m looking for. At the right time, the universe and my higher power will bring someone in that is compatible and we’re meant to be.

[But I have also] found community in a book club, in sobriety. I found a community just with neighbors. I didn’t have that in LA. It’s different here [where] people care about you.

How has your relationship with religion changed since you were raised Mormon?
When you’re growing up, you don’t have a choice what religion your family of origin comes from. I’m really grateful for the experience that I had in the Mormon church. I’m now at a place where I’m not resentful and I’m not angry. It’s not my cup of tea or where I’m at in my life. But there’s a lot of great qualities and values that I’ve taken from being raised Mormon and and I bring them into my family,

But I’ve always struggled with religion. I feel now I’m really spiritual and I made a promise to my ex-husband that I would raise my kids Jewish and I have. But I think that life has kicked my ass enough where I’m like, I need to find my own version of what a higher power is.

How has life improved since you got sober?

I wouldn’t have a relationship with Lala now if we both weren’t sober. There was just so much pain and what sobriety has given me is honesty, acceptance and trust in myself. I now get to help other people and I’m definitely a better mother because of it. That’s something that I will never take for granted and I’m grateful for the choice that I made.

How has sobriety changed your relationship with your higher power?
I truly believe I had to go through some really dark days and chapters of my life to be able to rely on something where I was like, “OK, I don’t want to control my life anymore because this control has not gotten me anywhere. It’s just dug me into a deeper hole that’s getting closer to my grave and I don’t want to be there.” For me, having a higher power has given me my own foundation that I could rely on.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?
I want to see my children thriving, happy, healthy — emotionally, physically, spiritually. I want to be doing what I love whether that’s producing or whether I’m directing. I want to continue to tell stories that inspire women [and continue] building this community that I have with Lala and I.

For me, it’s just about staying in my art because it is such a beautiful way to express yourself. It’s home for me.

What was the first episode of Star Trek? That’s actually something of a trick question: not only did The Original Series have an early pilot with (except for Leonard Nimoy) completely different actors, but producers shot episodes in a different order than they were originally shown on television. That first pilot (“The Cage”) would later have some of its footage reused in “The Menagerie” before being released as a separate episode. Meanwhile, “The Man Trap” became the first Star Trek episode that fans saw on television.

It’s a very solid sci-fi adventure featuring one of the ugliest (not to mention creepiest) monsters in genre history. The network carefully selected “The Man Trap” as the first episode to show, and their gambit worked. The new show instantly drew a legion of hardcore fans, and it would eventually become an even bigger cultural phenomenon once it was rediscovered by college students in the ‘70s. Ironically, though, nobody hates the first episode of Star Trek more than its biggest star: William Shatner!

Captain On The Bridge!

In “The Man Trap,” the Enterprise swings by an outpost to administer medical exams to all of the local residents. This is meant to be a routine mission, but things go sideways once Captain Kirk and his crew are assaulted by a shapeshifting monster. It’s hard for them to confirm who the alien is, especially when it can take the form of people like Dr. McCoy’s old flame. Eventually, the monster is revealed in all its horror as a salt vampire, constantly on the hunt for its next meal.

These days, “The Man Trap” is considered a very solid episode of Star Trek. Over on IMDB, it has a rating of 7.2, which is perfectly fair: while this is a decent sci-fi adventure, it’s nowhere near the heights of Original Series bangers like “Balance of Terror” and “City on the Edge of Forever.” However, Star Trek icon William Shatner really hated the episode. In his memoir Star Trek Memories, he noted how he and his fellow stars had already shot several episodes (including “Mudd’s Women” and “Charlie X”) but that the network “chose our absolute worst.” He went on to call it “a dreadful show” and reiterated “one of our worst ever.”

Still Salty About His Star Trek Premiere

It may sound shocking that Star Trek’s biggest star hates the episode that made him famous. However, Shatner may have been persuaded by some of the negative reviews this episode got back when it first premiered. A Variety reviewer dubbed “The Man Trap” a “dreary and confusing” episode, one that proved that this new sci-fi series “won’t work.” TV Guide was similarly negative and included in their mean review that “the sky’s not the limit for this Trek.” Leonard Nimoy agreed with Shatner, admitting in a documentary (which, confusingly, is also named Star Trek Memories) that this was the cast and crew’s least favorite episode compared to others that were already completed.

Fortunately, all’s well that ends well for the intrepid cast: Star Trek: The Original Series helped capture the public imagination in a big way. The show’s loyal audience basically invented the modern fan convention, and they also spearheaded multiple write-in campaigns to keep the show on the air.

Heck, Star Trek even inspired the first fanzines and modern fanfiction tropes, including slash fiction (Kirk/Spock) and the first Mary Sue. Being responsible for a successful show such as Tracker comes with its challenges — and has kept star Justin Hartley too busy.

“He lives and breathes Tracker,” Hartley’s costar Fiona Rene exclusively told Us Weekly at CBS Fest on Wednesday, April 15. “We were joking around the other day. He was like, ‘I used to have a life. I used to have friends.’”

Rene praised Hartley’s devotion to his job.

“What I’ve learned specifically is his attention to detail while we’re shooting,” she added. “Not only is he at home reviewing the scenes and making sure that he feels good about everything and coming to set and doing his role, but he comes in as his executive producer and goes through and says, ‘Wow, this moment didn’t feel right on your seat. Let me talk to you about this. Let me feel this out.’ He’s very, very generous.”

Tracker, which premiered in February 2024, follows survivalist Colter (Hartley) as he travels the country to help find missing people, track down information on criminal cases and more. Hartley reflected on the show’s overnight success in a recent interview with Men’s Journal.

“One of the things I really love about Colter and the way we’ve built him is that he doesn’t apologize for his masculinity,” Hartley said in August 2025. “I think that’s what people are looking for. You’re asking yourself, ‘What kind of people do I want to hang out with?’ And particularly: ‘What kind of male friends do I have in my life that I really value?’”

The actor was thrilled with the example Colter sets on the show.

“I think we’ve crafted a character that is so emotionally evolved, and he really does want to get to the root of why people do things,” Hartley continued. “The facts are that [executive producer] Ken Olin and I set out to do a show that was in fact a throwback. We wanted a new spin on a procedural, meaning our character would evolve over time.”

Hartley added: “He would not just remain the same exact person every single week. We were hopeful people would like it. People ended up loving it. I think there’s a huge appetite for this kind of show.”

Hartley also hinted at how far the show will push his character.

“I just love that when you watch a show like that and you tune into season 1 and then you tune into the last season, you see the development of the character and you go, ‘Wait a minute, are they playing different roles?’ But then if you watch it throughout the years, you experience those things with the characters,” he told TV Insider in September 2024. “As competent and confident as Colter is, I don’t at all think for a second that he doesn’t have a ton to learn, especially about himself and his family and all that.”

He continued: “Going forward, I think that will be how the show lives on a long runway, is that we keep developing this character and he becomes better at what he’s doing. He’s a restless man, and for an audience member, at least shows that I love to watch, you love to see that growth of a character and we have that.”
