Forget ‘House of the Dragon,’ Here Are the 8 Best Fantasy Series To Stream
When House of the Dragon first debuted in 2022, it became an instant hit, carrying forward the legacy of its behemoth ancestor. The second series in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire franchise, the fantasy drama is a prequel that chronicles the rise and fall of House Targaryen, beginning 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen and exploring the events that cause the devastating Dance of the Dragons. House of the Dragon has been widely acclaimed and quite popular, often superseding the success of Game of Thrones.
That runaway success has also often overshadowed other brilliant works of fantasy television that could easily compete with House of the Dragon’s grandeur and complexity. From other shows inspired by Game of Thrones to adaptations of prominent fantasy literature and network original animation that swept prestigious awards, there are some truly fantastic fantasies out there that deserve your love and attention. With that in mind, here’s our selection of the best fantasy shows you could stream right now instead of House of the Dragon.
1
‘The Wheel of Time’ (2021–2025)
Developed by Rafe Judkins and adapted from Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s novel series of the same name, The Wheel of Time follows Moiraine Damodred, a member of a powerful all-female magical organization called the Aes Sedai. Moiraine leads five young people on a perilous journey through the world on a quest to discover the Dragon Reborn, prophesied to either save the world from evil or destroy it entirely. Rosamund Pike leads the cast as Moiraine, with Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Sophie Okonedo, and more in significant roles.
At the time of its premiere, The Wheel of Time, just like House of the Dragon, was a breakout success, amassing popularity from genre fans across shows and books. An epic tale of love, war, and destiny that unfolds through magic and wonders, the show comes to life with striking visuals and dramatic action pieces that are sure to thrill any fantasy fan. Despite running alongside strong high-fantasy contenders, The Wheel of Time earned critical acclaim for its fantastic world-building and engaging plots. The only real negative is its untimely cancellation after just three seasons.
2
‘The Witcher’ (2019–Present)
Created by Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich and based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher revolves around three characters — Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter; Yennefer of Vengerberg, a powerful sorceress; and Princess Ciri of Cintra. Set in a fantastical land inhabited by humans, monsters, and beasts, their lives converge as they navigate shifting timelines, political corruption, magical threats, and their shared destiny. Henry Cavill (and later Liam Hemsworth) stars as Geralt, with Anya Chalotra, Greya Allen, Joey Batey, and Anna Shaffer as main characters in all seasons.
In terms of its production values, scope, world-building, and conceptual design, The Witcher comes very close to House of the Dragon. While the show started as Netflix’s response to fill the void left by Game of Thrones’ ending, it grew into a distinctive fantasy show with heavy themes, praiseworthy visual design, and practical-heavy effects. Critics have widely praised the art design and sweeping tales of monsters and mages, though, to be fair, they have also criticized the later seasons for the very prominent cast changes and deviations from the original material.
3
‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ (2022–Present)
Developed by Chris Prynoski and Critical Role Productions, The Legend of Vox Machina is based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role. The Prime Video series follows a team of rowdy misfits who try to save the realm of Exandria from magical forces, dragons, and personal demons, evolving from rogue mercenaries to powerful heroes. Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham reprise their voice roles from the original campaign.
The Legend of Vox Machina might have begun as an adaptation of a legacy game, but has since grown into a distinctive animated series that fans can easily enjoy without prior knowledge of D&D. The adult fantasy animated series has become noteworthy for its rich world-building and intelligent narrative, which balances heart, humor, and fast-paced action, often compared to animation giants like Castlevania and Arcane. Though critically acclaimed for its animation, character design, and voice acting, The Legend of Vox Machina is still a pretty underrated gem of the genre.
4
‘Castlevania’ (2017–2021)
One of Netflix’s earliest major adult animation productions, Castlevania is a dark fantasy series adaptation of the Japanese video game series by Konami, created and written by Warren Ellis. The action-horror series follows Trevor Belmont, the last surviving member of his disgraced clan, as he joins Speaker magician Sypha Belnades and the half-vampire Alucard to protect the land of Wallachia from Vlad Dracula Tepes and his vampire legions. The show’s ensemble voice cast includes Richard Armitage, Alejandra Reynoso, James Callis, Graham McTavish, Emily Swallow, Theo James, and more.
Castlevania carved the path for similar high-profile, original mature animation for Netflix, taking the streamer’s animated library to great heights. Heavily influenced by Japanese animation styles and the game’s artwork by Ayami Kojima, Castlevania is a stellar game-to-show adaptation that excels in its visual and narrative styles and scope. The show’s highly acclaimed visuals, action pieces, character designs, and dark themes make Castlevania a great competitor for House of the Dragon.
5
‘Blood of Zeus’ (2020–2025)
A Netflix adult animated series created and written by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, Blood of Zeus adapts ancient Greek mythology into a high-stakes fantasy action story, independent of the traditional canon of Greek myths. The series revolves around Zeus’s demigod son, Heron, who is tasked with saving Olympus and Earth from the wrath of a goddess. Derek Phillips, Jessica Henwick, Mamie Gummer, Jason O’Mara, and Claudia Christian voice the main characters.
Blood of Zeus is a high-stakes fantasy adventure that’s sure to sweep any fantasy animation fan off their feet. The series remarkably reimagines gods, titans, giants, demons, automata, and various mythical creatures from Greek legend in a fresh new tale of power and divine politics, depicted through stunning animation. Despite the critical acclaim and prestigious accolades for its visuals, epic battle sequences, and voice acting, Blood of Zeus has remained a criminally overlooked series in Netflix’s animation library.
6
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ (2022–Present)
Developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay and inspired by J.R.R Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an epic fantasy series adapted from the appendices and associated materials of The Lord of the Rings. Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, beginning in a time of relative peace, the show explores the forging of the titular rings and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron. The show’s ensemble international cast stars Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Benjamin Walker, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Daniel Weyman, and more as key characters.
The first screen adaptation of Middle-earth’s Second Age, The Rings of Power succeeds in alluring fans with its luxurious art and panoramic world-building. Boasting exquisite production values, it is the most expensive television series ever made and is unarguably more opulent than House of the Dragon and just as complex as the HBO hit. While the series still pales in comparison to Peter Jackson’s interpretation of The Lord of the Rings, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power manages to grasp the thematic spirit of the 20th-century literary classic and expand its mythos in new directions.
7
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ (2026–Present)
Created by George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a prequel to Game of Thrones and a sequel to House of the Dragon, adapted from Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novella series. Set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the adventures and misadventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a naïve hedge knight, and his bald, young squire, Egg, who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen. The show illustrates their lives and journeys before they become Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and King Aegon, respectively. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell star as the titular central characters.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a delightful rendition of Martin’s original novellas and a great contrast to its predecessor shows. The series stands out in the franchise with its lighter narrative, swapping high-end political warfare for a more intimate, character-driven story. Hailed by many as one of the best HBO shows of 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has earned critical acclaim for its style, tone, and cast performances, as well as some criticism for its skewed gender representation and for missing out on female characters.
8
‘Game of Thrones’ (2011–2019)
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s epic fantasy drama that first brought life to George R.R. Martin’s literary saga, Game of Thrones is a cultural phenomenon and an undeniable television landmark. A generation-spanning tale of power, politics, and moral ambiguity, the series follows a raging civil war that tears apart the seven kingdoms, with multiple contenders vying for the coveted Iron Throne, while elsewhere the rise of a princess from a disgraced dynasty and an ominous supernatural enemy threaten them all. The massive ensemble cast includes Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and many more.
The show that paved the way for House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones completely redefined fantasy television, setting new standards and bringing new dimensions to the genre. From its sweeping production to record-breaking results, the fantasy drama boasts grandeur in every aspect, even if it didn’t exactly sign off on a high note. While House of the Dragon opened to a bigger success than its predecessor, Game of Thrones undoubtedly rivals the prequel in production, casting, and expansive world-building.

Jake T. Austin & David Henrie Address ‘Wizards’ Spinoff Questions
‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ recently came to an end after two seasons. The spinoff brought back several OG ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ cast members for its four-part finale. Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jennifer Stone, Gregg Sulkin, and Maria Canals-Barrera all reprised their roles. However, Jake T. Austin, who played Max Russo, was noticeably missing. Now, Jake and David are sharing their sides of what happened behind the scenes.

Jake T. Austin Opens Up About Being Left Out Of The ‘Wizards’ Spinoff
While ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ wrapped up with its finale, Jake T. Austin spoke out about his absence from the spinoff. Jake played Max Russo throughout the original series but never reprised his role. He revealed that he was interested in returning. Despite his disappointment, Jake showed love to his former castmates and wished them continued success. He also thanked longtime fans for their support.
“To all the Wizards fans, just wanted to say for the record how disappointed I am to have not been included in the spinoff. I was asked back in 2020 if I was interested in reprising my role and said that I was 100% in.
Unfortunately, the powers that be decided to take the show in a different direction and my character wasn’t part of the equation.
Even though I wasn’t involved, I still have nothing but love for my former castmates and wish them continued success. Thank you to all the fans who watched over the years. The show wouldn’t be what it is without your endless support.”
David DeLuise, who played Jerry Russo, also weighed in under Entertainment Tonight’s recap of the OG cast reunion. “Would not be over if the OG wizards were really there. Missed opportunity,” David wrote. David previously reprised his role as Jerry during the spinoff. However, he did not return for the four-part series finale.
David Henrie Responds To Jake T. Austin’s Claims
Many ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ viewers wanted answers following Jake T. Austin’s post. Some even made their way to David Henrie’s Instagram DMs. David, who serves as an executive producer on ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ shared DMs from fans showing love to the finale. He also shared a message questioning why Max was not included. David stated that he would’ve loved for Jake to reprise his role as Max. However, he claimed Jake declined numerous offers to return.
“I woulda loved to have Max back but sadly he didn’t accept our numerous offers to join the new show. We called him, texted, went through agents etc. I would have loved for this new generation of millions of kids to get to meet Max, but I respect his decision and wish him all the best.”
Jake T. Austin Shares More Details About Why He Didn’t Return
Later that Friday, Jake T. Austin took to his Instagram Story to explain why he ultimately declined returning to ‘Wizards.’ Jake said he first learned about the spinoff through the media in 2024. He claimed he was the only Russo family member not invited to make a cameo or visit the set during Season 1.
Jake said David eventually reached out about returning. However, he passed after feeling “dismissed” and “kept in the dark” during Season 1. “The full story from my perspective: I first met with Disney in 2020 to discuss returning as Max for what I was told was essentially going to be a continuation of the original series,” he said.
“I only learned a spin-off was happening when it was announced in the media in October 2024. I was the only Russo family member who wasn’t invited to make a cameo appearance or visit the set by the end of s1. I was also not invited to the premiere.
I was kept in the dark about coming back until after the show wrapped s1. In April 2025 I received a DM from David asking if I would be interested in returning to the show.
By that point, I already felt dismissed for not being invited back during s1. And I wasn’t a fan of where they were taking the show in general. The whole thing felt off.
I feel like more of the OG Wizards cast should have been involved from the beginning, not just randomly appear for an episode or two, so I passed.”

Will Pregnant Anne Hathaway Reveal the Sex of Baby No. 3?
Pregnant Anne Hathaway is keeping mum on the sex of baby no. 3.
The Oscar winner stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, August 10, where guest host Anthony Anderson predicted that she and husband Adam Shulman are going to have another boy.
“I consider myself to be a baby whisperer,” Anderson, 55, told Hathaway. “Now, this is my first time seeing you pregnant and whatnot. It looks like it’s a boy. Am I correct, or you’re waiting?”
The Odyssey star, 43, responded, “We know [but] we’re not saying.”
As the studio audience cheered, Hathaway said, “Thank you for the support. It always feels so rude saying that,” adding that she “feels bad” for not sharing the baby’s sex when asked.
Hathaway was also asked about “releasing five movies and a baby” in 2026. The actress has already starred in Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey and is next set to appear in sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, due for release on Friday, August 14. In October, she will appear in the Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity.
The star said she feels “lucky” to have so much to look forward to this year, adding, “It’s incredible. I would never have imagined anything like this could happen. The only thing you can do is lean in, say yes, have a great time, laugh your ass off, and make some memories.”
Hathaway and Shulman’s sons, Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6, are also excited to make some special memories with their new sibling.
“[They’re] over the moon,” the actress said. “It feels really beautiful. It feels like the family’s having a baby. I mean, it’ll feel like I’m having a baby while it’s happening, but the emotional feeling is that we’re all going to welcome this little one.”
Hathaway’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday came the same day she shut down online speculation of a fake baby bump after sporting a stomach-baring crop top the day before.
On Sunday, August 9, Hathaway joined her End of Oak Street costar Ewan McGregor at the film’s world premiere in Burbank, California, wearing a pale blue top and low-cut jeans.
“Fake hair, real bump 😘 ✌️🦖🔥☀️🦕😅,” Hathaway captioned an Instagram video of her getting ready for Sunday’s red carpet. “Enjoy The @endofoakstreet Block Party chaos with me as my outfit literally melts in the heat!!”
Hathaway announced her pregnancy in June via Instagram and previously joked that she and Shulman are “calling this one our buzzer-beater,” referring to the basketball term for a shot that succeeds right before the final buzzer.

Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo & Morgan Seymour Talk Life Following Passing Of Nolan Wells
On the evening of Monday, August 11, Officer Tatum released a sit-down interview with Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour via his YouTube channel. Initially, the trio discussed the impact of the death of their friend, Nolan Wells, their public’s suspicion of their involvement, and the impact it has had on their lives.
Seymour noted that it feels like their life has stopped, while Pitalo added that it’s been a “flip upside down.” Specifically, Hudson noted that they’ve been unable to go out in public because their heads “are always on a swivel.”
“…I know my friends have had encounters in public. The threats have been insane,” Hudson added. “… It’s unbelievable where this has been taken to and the level of where this is at.”
As the conversation continued, the trio’s lawyer, Edward Paltzik, maintained that his clients “did nothing wrong” nor had anything to do with the passing of Nolan Wells. Still, per Hudson, he and his friends have reportedly been in situations where they felt their lives were at risk and had to leave certain locations.
Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo & Morgan Seymour Share Regret
Around the 15-minute mark, Officer Tatum asked the group how they think things “should have played out” amid Wells’ death, and how they believe it should have been “put out to the world.”
“So, first off, I wish that none of this would have ever happened. I wish that Nolan could still be here with us today,” Pitalo explained before adding. “I feel like his mom blasting us on social media from the get-go… that’s where it first started to take off. And then also the fact that she posted a picture of me and Morgan and another guy and Nolan on the boat together, blasting that out there, pushing this narrative… I wish that would have never happened either.”
Specifically, Pitalo said that if those events had never happened, the incident wouldn’t have gone as “viral” as it did. Furthermore, Pitalo even alleged that Wells’ dad, Elmore Wonsley, has also been more familiar with him than he previously noted.
“I wish we would have never went out on the Fourth of July because I know this wouldn’t have happened. Nolan wouldn’t be gone. It’s just really hard to think about ’cause it’s like, ‘I wish I would have done this different,’… cause now one of my brothers passed away,” Hudson explained.
Still, he noted that he was the one who called the Coast Guard and informed Wells’ mom.
“I wish it wouldn’t have been reported as some type of race thing. I think it’s really bad that people are pushing the narrative… obviously, it’s not. I mean, this was like a brother to us… I wish this wasn’t pushed on the media, as ‘This is a bunch of white guys that killed a Black guy,’” he continued.
Hudson noted that “from the beginning, no one had facts.”
“I know we did everything right and nothing wrong,” Hudson added.
More On The Passing Of Nolan Wells & Investigation
As The Shade Room previously reported, the body of Nolan Wells was found on July 6, 2026. This, two days after he traveled out to Horn Island on July 4th with Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour. Over a month later, questions remain about why the teen allegedly remained on Horn Island when his friends left. Additionally, questions remain on whether he drowned or was murdered.
At this point, the results of the state’s official autopsy and toxicology report remain sealed. Furthermore, an independent autopsy conducted by the Wells family remains inconclusive. Nonetheless, a legal defense campaign has been launched by Hudson, Pitalo, and Seymour as answers in the case remain awaited. Most recently, Dr. Umar has shared his thoughts on the investigation thus far.

Beyoncé Sued Over Alleged Copyright Infringement
Beyoncé is back in the headlines, and this time, it’s over an alleged unauthorized music sample. According to a new report, the “Single Ladies” hitmaker is being dragged to court after a music company filed a lawsuit against her music label, Parkwood. Beyoncé has been in a back-and-forth battle with this company since 2022, when she released her seventh studio album, “RENAISSANCE.”
The release of “RENAISSANCE” spawned several hits, including “Cuff It,” “Break My Soul,” and “Alien Superstar.” In the latter, the singer samples a portion of a song called “Moonraker” by a singer named John Holiday.
The sample appears at the beginning of the track and tells listeners not to be alarmed and to remain calm.
However, according to TMZ, a company called Hirose Entertainment and a producer named Shuji Hirose are suing the mother of three and her Parkwood label for alleged copyright infringement.
The court documents claim that Hirose Entertainment is actually the legal owner of the song, not Holiday, so any deal should’ve gone through them, not the singer.
Hirose Music Is Claiming Beyoncé Allegedly Failed To Obtain A License To Use Their Work
Beyoncé’s “RENAISSANCE” was released in the summer of 2022, and according to Hirose, the singer allegedly failed to obtain the proper license to sample a portion of their song in her chart-topping project.
To make matters worse, they alleged that Beyoncé only obtained a license for the sample weeks after the drop, but only from Holiday, who allegedly transferred his stake in the song “decades earlier.”
Hirose claimed that they’ve tried settling this matter with Beyoncé and her team since the song’s release; however, no progress has been made, and Bey has continued selling the track. The court documents state that Hirose is seeking an injunction to stop Beyoncé from continuing to make music on the song and is suing for an undisclosed amount.
A Judge Recently Sided With Beyoncé On The Matter

Beyoncé’s company was in the headlines over this matter just a few weeks ago, according to The Blast. A U.S. district judge actually dismissed the copyright and breach-of-contract complaint filed by Hirose and deemed it invalid because the company was formed in early August 2025.
“Please do not be alarmed, remain calm: like the DJ booth referenced in the works at issue, this district judge must conduct a troubleshoot test of the entire system—that is, a jurisdictional inquiry—before reaching any of the parties’ merits arguments,” the judge wrote in his filing. “Plaintiff had no legal existence at the time it brought suit, so it cannot have held a stake in the outcome of the litigation at the time it filed the complaint.”
Artists Come Out Of The Woodwork To Accuse Bey Of Failing To Get Proper Credit

This isn’t the first time that Beyoncé has been accused of stealing other artists’ work. Shortly after “RENAISSANCE” was released, the English band Right Said Fred claimed that the “Lemonade” singer used a sample from “I’m Too Sexy” without obtaining permission.
“Normally, the artist approaches us but Beyoncé didn’t because she is such an arrogant person. She just had probably thought ‘come and get me’ so we heard about it after the fact when you did. But everyone else, Drake and Taylor Swift, they came to us. To use our melody, they need our permission, so they send us the demo and we approve it and if so we get a co-write credit,” the group wrote online.
Beyoncé and her team clapped back, though, saying that not only did they receive permission to use the sample, the group also spoke about how grateful they were that the 35x Grammy winner even thought to use their work.
Kelis Called Queen Bey Out

Kelis also tried to make Beyoncé’s “RENAISSANCE” release about herself, claiming in 2022 that the sample Bey used of her 2003 hit “Milkshake” was used without her permission.
“The reality is that it’s frustrating. I have the right to be frustrated,” she said, according to VIBE. “Why did no one have the human decency to call and be like, ‘Yo, hey, we would like to use your record.’”
However, Pharrell Williams, who wrote the song, spoke with the media and said that while Kelis was the performer, she had no authority to make contractual moves.
“I wish her the absolute best,” he said. “But I wrote this song.”

Netflix Officially Reveals New Psychological Thriller Trailer
Léa Seydoux has taken on big franchise hits like No Time to Die and Dune: Part 2, but now the actress is bringing us into the world of Gentle Monster. Directed and written by Marie Kreutzer, the film has been making its way around festivals, debuting at Cannes and continuing with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) later this fall. And now audiences can see the trailer for the film, which will be released in select theaters on October 30 and then later on Netflix on November 18. Gentle Monster stars Seydoux, Jella Hasse, Laurence Rupp, and Academy Award nominee Catherine Deneuve.
The film stars Seydoux as Lucy, a concert pianist who has to confront the idea of not really knowing who her husband is when police come to their home to raid his belongings. À la films like Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, the trailer for Gentle Monster will have the audience (along with its characters) questioning everything. Gentle Monster is described as follows: “When a police raid shatters her life, concert pianist Lucy (Léa Seydoux) must protect her son and confront how little she knows her husband after he is accused of an unspeakable crime in this tense thriller about trust and survival.”
The trailer features Seydoux playing piano with glimpses of the story coming to life. It is simple and highlights Deneuve’s role beautifully but it does leave you wondering exactly what this family is about to go through. While the trailer does not say what crime Phillip (Rupp) commits, the film itself is based around a real life case against Austrian actor Florian Teichtmeister.
The Horrifying Case That Inspired Gentle Monster
In 2020, there was a report released by Die Zeit that detailed a pedophile ring involving 30,000 people. The case affected Kreutzer so that she began working on Gentle Monster. The problem came when an actor who worked on her previous film was associated with the news. Teichtmeister, who starred in Kreutzer’s film Corsage, was charged and sentenced as a result and it led to Kreutzer questioning the film she had been working on. “I was in shock” Kreutzer told Cannes. “Initially I thought that I couldn’t carry on working on Gentle Monster because the film would always be linked with the Florian Teichtmeister case, but hiding away would have been a mistake.” She ultimately went on to complete the film.
You can see Gentle Monster in theaters on October 30.

Demi Lovato Confirms Cameo as Mitchie in Camp Rock 3
Surprise! Demi Lovato is reprising her role as Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock 3.
The singer and actress shared a photo of herself in the film via X on Monday, August 10, writing, “Y’all miss me? Xoxo, Mitchie.”
Lovato, 33, was previously announced as an executive producer on the film, which premieres Thursday, August 13, on Disney Channel and will be available to stream on Disney+ the following day.
The Disney Channel alum’s post came the same day that she and the Jonas Brothers — Kevin, 38, ex Joe, 36, and Nick, 33 — reunited for the Los Angeles premiere of the new movie, which comes 18 years after the original Camp Rock movie and 16 years after Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.
The Jonas Brothers reprise their roles as fictional boy band Connect 3 as they return to Camp Rock searching for a new opening act for their upcoming tour. The film shines a light on a new generation of gifted campers while paying homage to the original films.
“We wanted to find the right balance of how much she should be in the film and what Mitchie’s involvement looked like,” director Veronica Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Monday, August 10.
“Her character literally says in the movie, to her mom, ‘This isn’t about me, it’s about them. It’s their time to shine. This is the new generation of campers,’” Rodriguez added. “With Mitchie and Connect 3, we wanted them to be ingrained and necessary for the story but also leave enough room and space for the world to fall in love with the new generation of campers.”
Disney announced production on Camp Rock 3 was underway in Vancouver in September 2025.
“Camp Rock is an important part of the Disney Channel Original Movie legacy, with unforgettable music, energetic storytelling and characters that live in the hearts of fans to this day,” said Ayo Davis, the president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement at the time. “Bringing it back with Kevin, Joe, Nick and Demi is such a full-circle moment, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this world to a new generation.”
In January, Lovato opened up about being a mentor to the new generation of Camp Rock stars.
“I wish that I had gotten advice, and I think it would have saved me a lot of trial and errors, like, figuring out s*** my own kind of thing,” she said on the “Not Gonna Lie” podcast. “I’m grateful for the path I’ve had without a mentor [and] without advice from others. I would love to be a mentor to somebody and guide someone through the journey that I went on.”
The “Cool for the Summer” singer added, “I actually did give, like, a mini pep talk to the new cast of Camp Rock when I first met them. I met them as a group and I was, like, ‘Hey guys,’ and I gave them some advice like, ‘Don’t be afraid to ask for time off, like, take care of yourself first. It’s really important that you take care of your mental health so you can do the other things you want to do, like performing and acting.’”
Camp Rock 3 premieres on Thursday, August 13, at 8 p.m. ET on the Disney Channel and is available to stream the next day on Disney+.

‘The Simpsons’ Took Its Best Tradition From This Beloved Sci-Fi TV Series
As long as The Simpsons stays on the air (which could be for eternity), we’ll receive new installments of the yearly “Treehouse of Horror” special. From Season 2 in 1990 to Season 37 in 2025, the Halloween-themed anthology episode is a tradition unlike any other. Despite being a major landmark in American pop culture, many of The Simpsons‘ most indelible traits, characters, and episodes riffed on pre-existing stories and iconography, which were then infused with a new comedic edge to feel wholly original. “Treehouse of Horror” is no different, as its horror, fantasy, and supernatural roots are indebted to The Twilight Zone, arguably the most famous anthology and science fiction series in history. The Simpsons used to be a love letter to its evergreen artistic influences, but these days, the long-running animated show has its eyes focused on cashing in on the zeitgeist.
“Treehouse of Horror” Was a Witty Parody of ‘The Twilight Zone’
For so many people raised on The Simpsons in the ’90s and beyond, watching new episodes on Fox every week was a gateway to a new realm of classic and contemporary pop culture with its countless references and satirical homages to movies, television, books, and celebrities. This still resonates today with the likes of 26-year-old breakout director Curry Barker, whose recent cinematic sensation, Obsession, was inspired by the “Monkey’s Paw” segment on none other than “Treehouse of Horror II” from 1991. Based on the 1902 short story by W.W. Jacobs, The Simpsons made old texts hip for modern audiences, and now everyone understands that a monkey’s paw represents the axiom “be careful what you wish for.”
Today, The Twilight Zone has endured in the lexicon, from Rod Serling‘s narration and opening theme to its recurring themes and motifs. Just like the aforementioned “Monkey’s Paw,” calling something a Twilight Zone-esque experience, something related to a nightmarish alternate reality or haunted fable, is a universally understood phenomenon, and countless people were likely drawn to check out episodes from the ’60s anthology series after watching “Treehouse of Horror.” The various supernatural and fantastical encounters each member of the Simpson family has every spooky season are comedic takes on Twilight Zone segments, broad enough to appeal to mass audiences yet carrying an extra layer of charm for die-hard fans of the original series.
Direct parodies of The Twilight Zone from the “Treehouse” saga include “Hungry are the Damned” (“To Serve Man”), “Bart’s Nightmare” (“It’s a Good Life”), and “Clown Without Pity” (“Living Doll”). Plot points such as Lisa’s discovery of a cookbook showing how to cannibalize, Bart’s possession of terrifying psychic powers, and a Krusty the Clown doll turning evil deploy the signature hook of Twilight Zone segments for exceptional farce, while occasionally retaining ounces of the show’s thematic undercurrent.
The Lack of Enduring Cultural References in Contemporary Episodes of ‘The Simpsons’
Unsurprisingly, “Treehouse of Horror” reached its peak in the 1990s, and like everything else about The Simpsons, it simply doesn’t hit the same today. To an extent, the yearly horror-themed tradition crystallizes what modern Simpsons episodes are missing compared to the show’s golden age. Before the Internet, the show used to be a gateway to different realms of historical pop culture, and it helped 30-plus-year-old shows like The Twilight Zone increase their cultural legacy.
When watching modern “Treehouse” episodes, the series isn’t so much tapping into its well of references that influenced Matt Groening and the golden age’s writing staff, but rather, the buzzy trends in the zeitgeist. 2024’s installment featured Homer donning a pair of possessed Denim jeans modeled after Marvel’s Venom comic book character, which saw its third entry in the Tom Hardy film franchise release simultaneously. It’s hard to get much mileage out of Spider-Man’s antiheroic foil, considering its recent series is already goofy and tongue-in-cheek.
The 36th “Treehouse” in 2025 directly parodied the indie horror film Late Night with the Devil in the segment “Clown Night with the Devil,” as well as another segment involving surrounding families in crisis watching The Simpsons (with a cameo by Groening). For anyone looking for an escape from the 2020 election, The Simpsons, unfortunately, dedicated a segment in “Treehouse of Horror XXXI” to the mania and uncertainty of the event. This episode reflects a sense of delayed catch-up on the writers’ part to tap into the horror phenomenon, only to satirize a relatively forgotten movie, and the self-reflective meta commentary is very much the product of a show running on fumes. The Twilight Zone remains a timeless source for parody, while also providing a perfect template for anthology sci-fi/horror TV.

Acclaimed ‘Until Dawn’ Horror Game Studio Officially Announces Mass Layoffs
2026 has been jam-packed with successful new gaming releases, but some of the best are yet to come in the final few months of the year. After being announced all the way back in September 2021 with a short teaser, Marvel’s Wolverine is finally set to be released next month on September 15, exclusively on PlayStation 5. The game launches courtesy of Insomniac Games, the same studio that has delivered all three entries in the critically acclaimed and successful Spider-Man trilogy. Following only two months after Marvel’s Wolverine is one of the biggest gaming launches in history, Grand Theft Auto 6. After the unprecedented longevity of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the colossal success of Red Dead Redemption 2 from 2018 to now, it’s safe to say expectations are sky-high for the next game from Rockstar.
One popular gaming franchise to emerge in recent years is Until Dawn, which was first announced in 2012 and later released in 2015. A full remake for the game was released in 2024 on next-generation consoles, and Sony even developed a feature film based on the game that was released last year. Until Dawn is owned by Sony, but Supermassive Games developed the original game, though the studio is not working on the sequel, Until Dawn 2. This morning, Supermassive Games took to its official X account to officially announce a round of mass layoffs, which will result “in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues.” This is part of what the studio calls a “redundancy consultation process,” but it promises to provide proper support to all affected by the restructuring. The full statement can be found below.
Was the ‘Until Dawn’ Movie a Success?
Sony spent only $15 million on the making of the Until Dawn movie, meaning it needed between $30–40 million to break even, when also factoring in marketing costs and the splitting of ticket sales between studio and theater owners. The film smashed past this, grossing $54 million at the box office, despite mediocre scores of 51% from critics and 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film did receive a nomination at the 2025 Game Awards for Best Video Game Adaptation, but it did not win. Until Dawn has since found a streaming home on Netflix, where it’s had several runs into the top 10.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage surrounding the Until Dawn franchise.

Shake Shack Employee Allegedly His Robs Own Restaurant
Keondre Simmons was arrested at the Shake Shack near Scottsdale and Greenway Road, according to ABC15 Arizona. The Shake Shack employee was caught when he returned for his shift two days after the armed robbery.
Simmons reportedly robbed two of his co-workers at gunpoint on Monday, August 3, by entering through the delivery door in the back. According to KTAR, he rang the delivery doorbell and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the co-worker who answered and forced them into the walk-in cooler.
Afterward, he allegedly directed the Shake Shack manager to open the restaurant’s safe and give him the cash, which was only $2,800.
Furthermore, he locked both Shake Shake employees in the cooler and made them kneel. Afterward, he took their cellphones and a landline phone before throwing the devices into a water-filled sink.
Simmons’ Co-Worker Recognized Him
Both of Simmons’ co-workers reportedly told the police that the Shake Shack had called out sick the same day. They added that the armed robber’s voice, physical characteristics, and knowledge of the restaurant were consistent with Simmons.
Not only that, the two workers also noted that the robber knew where the gloves and cleaning wipes were kept in the store, and he also knew where the walk-in cooler latch was located.
The Shake Shack employee was arrested in the parking lot wearing his uniform when he returned to work two days after he allegedly robbed the store.
Folks React By Roasting Simmons On Social Media
After the story was shared on TikTok, folks could not help but laugh at Simmons’ misfortune as they wondered what he was thinking in the comment section.
One user wrote, “I’m crying why is he still in his shake shack shirt 😭.”
Another added, “he showed up for his shift???? again????😂😂😂😂😂😂 omg.”
“not him in the shake shack shirt lmfaooooooo,” laughed another.

Simmons reportedly told investigators that he got rid of the clothes he wrote during the armed robbery. In addition, he allegedly told the authorities the gun was at his home. They obtained a search warrant and discovered a semi-automatic handgun and cash.
@abc15arizona A Phoenix man is accused of robbing the Scottsdale Shake Shack he works at, and he was arrested two days later when he showed up for his next shift. Ford Hatchett has more from the court paperwork on the brazen crime.
