Silo Season 3 is adapting the second book in Hugh Howey‘s series, Shift, though it is taking more creative liberties than ever. Changes are nothing new for this series, though the show’s interpretation of Rep. Keene (Ashley Zukerman) is considerably different from the book. The latest episode, “Gray Goo,” changed things up even more, and some fans are frustrated to see the story drifting away from the source material. Howey himself hopped into a Facebook fan group to defend Keene’s new arc, simultaneously acknowledging how different it is. With two more episodes to go in this season and another season on the way, it’s too soon to draw any major conclusions just yet. However, right now it looks like this version of Keene is better suited for the TV show than an exact copy of the book character would have been.

Howey’s novel introduces us to Rep. Donald Keene, though the show changed his first name to Daniel to avoid any comparisons to real-life political figures. In Season 3, we’ve seen Daniel slowly uncover the secretive project to build the silos that will eventually become doomsday shelters for Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and everyone else we know in the series. At the end of Episode 8, Daniel actually rejects an offer to join the project, which is not how it played out in the book. There, Donald was pretty quick to sign on — even if he didn’t fully understand what he was in for. Having Daniel refuse this call reframes the rest of the story in some ways, but it’s ultimately good for his arc and for the overarching mystery of the series as well.

‘Silo’ Makes Daniel More Likable Than Donald

Responding to fans online this week, Howey wrote: “It’s an improvement over the books. We didn’t want Daniel to be a WILLING contributor to a large part of the project. You’ll start to see why in the next two episodes. It’s critical to his arc.” Howey’s commentary actually highlights some nuance in this change — while Daniel didn’t refuse to work on the Silo project in the books, he had even less of an idea of what he was getting into. The show has simply streamlined his story so that information can be revealed to him and the audience at a smoother pace.

In Shift, Donald Keene is a freshman Congressman who already knows Senator Thurman (Laura Innes) as an old family friend. Since they both represent the people of Georgia, Donald is happy to work with Thurman in any way — both as part of his responsibilities and to raise his political notoriety. Thurman introduces him to this construction project under false pretenses. Thurman claims it is an underground storage facility for nuclear waste, with just one silo-style shelter on campus to house the staff in case of an emergency.

Donald does find it odd when Thurman asks him to design the shelter himself, but he has a background in architecture and he dreads saying no to the senior legislator. Throughout the book, Donald does wish he could abandon the project as it causes him stress and strains his relationships, but he persists for the sake of his career. He does not learn what he was actually designing until a nuclear attack drives him inside. Even then, he doesn’t learn the truth about the nanoweapon swarms until later.

It’s easier and more natural for the show’s version of Daniel to refuse Thurman since he has no personal history with her. In fact, the show hasn’t changed Daniel’s characterization so much as the circumstances under which he learns about the silo project. Since he knows about the nanoweapons and other conspiratorial aspects of this plot from the start, he has a chance to come off as more heroic and noble by refusing this offer. It gives Daniel time to believe he has agency before the full scope of the coercion at play is revealed.

Thurman’s Plot is Even More Horrifying on TV

If Apple TV‘s version of this plot makes Keene more likable, it makes Thurman even more villainous. As mentioned above, these changes make a lot of sense for the pacing of a TV show — they help draw out the suspense and tension and make it harder for viewers to guess where the story is headed. This is likely a good call, though we’ll see if the show can stick the landing for Season 3 in a couple of weeks. As it is, Keene’s storyline has been more exciting at the cost of his overall screen time compared to the books.

It makes sense that fans feel like the TV show is letting Keene off the hook in a way. Rather than reckoning with the consequences of his own actions, he will now have the comfort of knowing he refused to join the project when given the chance. However, in either case the whole plot came down to unbelievable manipulation by Thurman. In the end, giving Daniel the heroic moment that Donald never got will look like a small trade for the much-needed injection of Hollywood pacing in this story. It doesn’t hurt that the masterminds of this plot will look all the worse in the process.

So far, showrunner Graham Yost and the rest of the cast and crew have given us no reason to doubt they can pull all these strands together and bring this story to a satisfying close. Until then, fans can read ahead in Howey’s Silo trilogy, available now in print, digital, and audiobook formats. Silo Season 3 has two more episodes to go, airing on Fridays on Apple TV. Season 4 has been greenlit and is slated for release next year.

Harry Jowsey’s wife, Amber Mozo, is speaking her truth after viewers learned during the Let’s Marry Harry reunion that the couple’s relationship is over .

“I was very loyal, very honest, very patient,” Amber, 31, exclusively tells Us. “Getting back on that stage and seeing him and looking him in the eye, I really said the things I wanted to say for the last time.”

Amber says she was “hurt by the betrayal,” but she didn’t really take it personally.

“I think a dismissive avoidant will take the route of saying there’s a miscommunication. It’s avoiding responsibility, and at the end of the day, you could have had the conversation with me,” she explains to Us. “I hate to say it, but he makes up things that will make him avoid responsibility.”

According to Harry, 29, he ended things with his wife while he was in Australia. From Amber’s perspective, he was trying to find a home for the two of them to share during that same time period.

“We picked out a house together,” she claims. “Say what you want on whatever platform you want, but I have text messages [from] us. This was the plan.”

After dating 20 women on the Netflix series Let’s Marry Harry, the Too Hot to Handle alum had to pick between two girls during the August 12 finale. Harry faced a tough decision between Amber and Las Vegas cocktail waitress Dannelle Davidson.

While Harry ultimately chose Amber and had a televised wedding, the honeymoon phase didn’t last long.

“It felt like I was a show pony wife. It didn’t feel sincere,” Amber claims. “The cameras were gone, and that was really hard to deal with silently. That was my frustration at the reunion. I feel really betrayed by him. He was talking to me the whole time he was with Dannelle. I was betrayed by both of them. You’re gonna make me find that out on a Snapchat three days before the reunion, and he posted it saying, ‘Plot twist.’ You’re not really a quality human. I’m sorry, you’re not.”

Amber said she felt a connection to Harry when he claimed to be done with reality shows after his latest Netflix series. The pair also connected over grief after losing close family members.

Ultimately, Amber is not impressed with the man she faced at the reunion.

“His responses to me were so shallow,” she tells Us. “I think he’s just someone I can’t work with. If things fall on deaf ears, it’s not my place. And I mean, as horrible as it is to tell everyone you’re married a month later, I’m not going to stand [for] something toxic. I’m not that type of girl. He picked me for a reason. I stand 10 toes for myself, and I don’t play about love, and I don’t play about grief. So for him to quite literally ghost me, not tell me about Dannelle, not speak out to me until the show came out — I’ve never experienced this type of human being.”

Us has reached out to Harry’s rep for comment.

Harry previously slammed rumors that his wedding and marriage were fake. The Perfect Match alum, however, did confirm that he and Amber signed paperwork — but the paperwork was never legally filed.

“Obviously, because it’s a TV show, [producers] said, ‘We can’t submit this until after the reunion,’ because basically, if they submitted it on that day, all the money, all the time, everything like that, everything they invested in the show would have been for nothing because it would have been ruined, and you guys wouldn’t watch the show,” he said in an Instagram video shared August 16, referencing the filing being public and, therefore, available for anyone to spoil the end of the series.

When later asked about the reunion taping, Harry said he wasn’t worried about anything the ladies could say about their experience with the show.

“Whatever they want to say or whatever they feel called to say, I would love for them to just do it,” he shared on the August 19 episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “Like, let’s put it all on the table. That’s fine. … I just would want that everyone gets what they need out of it and that we’re all good and we can move on.”

Tim Curry’s death at age 80 has renewed attention on the performance that made him a cultural icon, even though the movie was initially considered such a failure that he feared it could end his film career. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” struggled to attract audiences when it arrived in theaters in 1975. Plans for a major New York opening were canceled, and the movie was pulled from most of its initial markets. However, one unconventional decision gave the film another chance.

Before it became a movie, “Rocky Horror” was a stage production written by Richard O’Brien. “The Rocky Horror Show” premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1973 and mixed original rock music with affectionate parodies of old science-fiction and horror movies. Curry originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the flamboyant scientist whose castle becomes an unexpected destination for newly engaged couple Brad and Janet.

The production grew from a small experimental show into a major London success. Its popularity convinced producer Lou Adler and 20th Century Fox that the material could work as a film. Curry and several members of the stage cast returned for the adaptation, while Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon were cast as Brad and Janet. The movie was filmed in England beginning in October 1974, with the production using Oakley Court, a Victorian mansion previously connected to several Hammer horror films.

Despite the stage show’s success, signs of trouble emerged before the movie reached American theaters. A Broadway production opened in March 1975 but closed after only 45 performances.

The Movie Failed To Find An Audience

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” opened in the United States on September 26, 1975. The movie performed well at the UA Westwood theater in Los Angeles, where some customers repeatedly returned. That enthusiasm did not translate to the seven other cities included in its initial release.

According to the American Film Institute, the film bombed outside Los Angeles, prompting Fox to withdraw it from theaters. The studio also canceled a planned New York opening scheduled for Halloween night.

An attempt to pair the movie with Brian De Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise” for college audiences reportedly failed to generate meaningful interest. Curry was devastated by the response. “It died a death. It was a failure. And I was crushed,” he admitted during a 2025 interview.

The actor worried that having his first major movie rejected could bring his screen career to an abrupt end. “I thought that it might well be the end of my movie career,” he said. “But I was tougher than that.”

Midnight Screenings Gave The Film Another Chance

The movie’s unusual recovery began after Fox executives noticed that the small group of people who loved it kept returning. Rather than continuing to market “Rocky Horror” as a conventional musical, the studio tested it in a time slot already associated with strange, provocative, and experimental films.

On April 1, 1976, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” began playing at midnight at the Waverly Theater in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The setting proved crucial. Instead of competing for mainstream moviegoers, “Rocky Horror” reached night owls, artists, queer viewers, students, and others drawn to entertainment that existed outside conventional boundaries. The same people began returning week after week. They learned every line, recognized one another, and gradually changed the screening from a movie into a communal performance.

By the end of the decade, Fox reportedly had hundreds of prints circulating for midnight shows across the country.

Fans Began Talking Back To The Screen

Audience participation was not created by the filmmakers or planned by the studio. It developed organically among regular attendees at the Waverly. Fans began shouting responses to characters, adding jokes between lines of dialogue, and insulting Brad and Janet as their night at Frank-N-Furter’s castle became increasingly chaotic.

The spontaneous remarks evolved into established callbacks that audiences repeated together. A 1976 Halloween event encouraged fans to attend dressed as the characters. Costumes soon became a regular part of the experience, giving moviegoers permission to recreate Curry’s corsets, makeup, and dramatic entrance for themselves.

The participation eventually moved in front of the screen. Groups known as shadow casts began performing the entire film while it played behind them, matching the characters’ movements and lip-syncing the dialogue and songs. Each local cast could bring its own jokes and traditions while following a loose set of rituals shared by “Rocky Horror” audiences around the world.

Props Became Part Of The Tradition

The experience grew even more elaborate when fans began bringing props tied to specific moments in the movie. Audience members threw rice during the wedding scene and held newspapers over their heads when Brad and Janet became trapped in the rain. Water pistols recreated the on-screen storm, while toast was tossed after Frank-N-Furter proposed a toast at dinner. Playing cards appeared during “I’m Going Home,” and toilet paper was thrown when Brad shouted, “Great Scott!”

Many theaters eventually restricted certain props because of safety concerns and the enormous cleanup required. However, the rituals became inseparable from the film’s reputation. Watching “Rocky Horror” at home could provide the story and songs, but attending a midnight screening offered an unpredictable performance created jointly by the movie, shadow cast, and audience.

‘Rocky Horror’ Became A Place For Outsiders

The film’s longevity cannot be explained by props and callbacks alone. Frank-N-Furter’s confidence, sexuality, and rejection of conventional gender expectations made the character liberating for viewers who rarely saw themselves represented onscreen.

“Rocky Horror” screenings became spaces where people could dress differently, experiment with identity, and find others who understood what it felt like to exist outside the mainstream. The AFI described the screenings as safe spaces for outsiders, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Curry came to recognize what his performance had given viewers. “I gave them permission to be who they discovered they wanted to be,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m proud of that.”

There’s an undeniable truth in Hollywood: Success breeds emulation. Innovative TV shows and movies that find an audience only stay that way for so long before the wannabes start coming in droves. Some find success, like Seinfeld-inspired shows Curb Your Enthusiasm and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while others fail spectacularly, like Friends wannabe Coupling from 2003. Then there’s Cheers, the iconic sitcom that debuted in 1982. Despite its immense popularity, no one has come close to even trying to copy the series since the bar closed down on May 20, 1993, after a stellar 11-season run. Even spin-off Frasier knew well enough that it couldn’t just have Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) show up at a Seattle bar on a weekly basis. Really, the only series that can live up to the iconic Cheers is Cheers itself, and now, 44 years later, a revival of the iconic sitcom could prove it.

Cheers famously came close to being cancelled after its first season, ranking achingly close to dead last in the ratings. It avoided cancellation because, as Cheers writer Ken Levine opined, “They had nothing better to replace it with” (not entirely accurate: Cheers had then-president of the NBC entertainment division Brandon Tartikoff‘s full support as well). But what makes Cheers such an iconic series are the very things that almost got it cancelled in the first place.

Viewers weren’t used to comedies that relied on smart, clever dialogue. In fact, that same year, Police Squad! was cancelled after only six episodes aired because ABC network executive Anthony Thomopoulos claimed that the audience had to “pay too much attention” to understand the jokes, which TV Guide assessed as the “most stupid reason a network ever gave for ending a series.” In other words, viewers were fed sitcoms laden with pratfalls and fast-paced jokes because they weren’t “smart enough” to understand anything else. The single-location setup, too, was unfamiliar, as were the dynamics being set up between the characters.

But it didn’t take long before Cheers started to catch on with viewers, and in doing so, provided a master class in what makes a sitcom work. The single-setting allowed for familiarity, truly a place “where everybody knows your name,” unlike other series where the audience has to consistently reconcile the characters in different environments. The pacing meant waiting for the punchline, and the writing made that wait worthwhile. The dynamic between Ted Danson‘s Sam and Shelley Long‘s Diane was more than simply a “will they/won’t they,” but rooted in a legendary, and just as unconventional, real-life relationship.

A ‘Cheers’ Revival Has to Make This Element Work

But the strongest asset that made Cheers the go-to series of its era was its ensemble cast. There was literally someone on the series that was relatable to those watching, whether it was the sophisticated air of Frasier Crane, the know-it-all mail carrier Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger), the deeply cynical, prickly Carla (Rhea Perlman), or Norm (George Wendt), the bar mainstay and lovable everyman. The dynamics between them were just as important to the success of the show as the key relationship between Sam and Diane. And when characters left the series, they weren’t simply replaced with similar characters, but characters who mixed up the dynamics: the naive, sweet Coach (Nicholas Colasanto), who mentored Sam, was replaced by Woody (Woody Harrelson), a younger, more energetic (but equally naive) bartender that prompted Sam to become the mentor; while Kirstie Alley‘s Rebecca changed the dynamic Sam had with Diane, a friendship as opposed to a romance.

That intricate, balanced web of personalities and relationships doesn’t come easy, a lesson Coupling learned by assuming any collection of 20 to 30-year-olds could have the same chemistry as Friends. For any revival of Cheers to have success, finding that balance is its first priority. Furthermore, you can’t just find a “new Norm” and a “new Cliff.” That balance has to come with a new set of characters, each with their own foibles that aren’t limited to what came before. While it may not come easily, it can be done. Frasier is a perfect example, creating new dynamics with new characters without resorting to recreating characters from the original series. And Frasier itself only succeeded because those new characters came equipped with excellent writing that fleshed them out completely.

The question is this: why bother, and why now? Because in today’s chaotic world, people crave familiarity and a place they belong, perhaps more than ever before. A new series that’s like Cheers won’t work, or else it would have by now. A full reboot takes away that familiarity that was so critical to Cheers‘ success, like a childhood home being taken over by people you don’t know. A revival, on the other hand, implies a connection to the original series: not bound to it, but something that honors it. It could be that Sam has a son or daughter who has taken over the bar, or, if Danson’s up for it, Sam himself is still behind the counter, tending to a new group of relatable barflies who have found a place where everybody knows their names, too.

For many of today’s Fleetwood Mac fans, it is difficult to imagine the band without the iconic Buckingham-Nicks duo. However, the London-based band existed (and thrived) for many years before the Americans joined their ranks. They began as a British blues band (a far cry from their folksy pop/rock sound in the late ‘70s) composed of five English musicians: Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Danny Kirwan, Peter Green, and Jeremy Spencer. By the early ‘70s, three of the five original members had left the band.

The musicians left the band in quick succession, each fighting their own demons – all of which, however, stemmed from the same root cause: the crushing weight of fame and success. Had the original members remained, Fleetwood Mac may never have become the international smash hit we know and love today. This is in no way a slight towards any of the talented founding members – they were a very successful band in their early years. But would the group have become one of the most famous bands of all time without Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham? We can never be sure, of course, but it seems highly unlikely.

The Original Band Members Drop Like Flies

Balancing a career as a successful musician with a healthy lifestyle is notoriously difficult – it is no secret that the relentless strain of the industry has caused countless rock stars to fall asunder. The pressure of fame had a deep effect on the original members of Fleetwood Mac, leading to Green and Spencer’s decisions to leave the band and fueling the increasingly erratic, alcohol-fueled behavior that led to Kirwan getting the boot. While all three left under similar circumstances, one band member’s story stands out: Jeremy Spencer ditched the band on a whim while going out to grab something to read – but, oddly enough, he never did make it to the bookshop. In lieu of buying a magazine, Spencer joined a cult. He would never again return to Fleetwood Mac.

Peter Green, founder and guitarist of Fleetwood Mac, was the first to leave the band. He bailed in 1970 after a long and worsening struggle with mental health, exacerbated by frequent acid trips. One final LSD trip at a commune outside of Munich was the straw that broke the camel’s back. While he would later return to the band temporarily, this unfortunate trip marked the end of his initial tenure. He was disillusioned with fame and fortune, and even went so far as to give away the money he had made as a part of Fleetwood Mac.

Jeremy Spencer, guitarist and pianist, was the second musician to leave Fleetwood Mac. The feeling of discontent in the band was seemingly contagious, as he absconded shortly after Green. Spencer had become restless long before his departure from the band in 1971. About a year before he left the band for good, Spencer released a strange self-titled album, completely unrelated to the band of which he was still a part. Clearly, his mind was in other places. He was thinking beyond Fleetwood Mac. Spencer was ready to make a change, even if he didn’t quite know what it would look like.

The Disappearance of Jeremy Spencer

Fleetwood Mac was on a US tour in 1971 after the release of their fourth studio LP, Kiln House, in September of the previous year. It was February and the band was in LA, set to play at Whiskey a Go Go, a popular (and now historically significant) nightclub on the Sunset Strip. It was supposed to be a big stop on their tour, an important performance for the future of the band. However, they were forced to cancel their show when Jeremy Spencer abruptly disappeared.

Spencer left the Hawaiian Hotel, where the band was staying during their stint in LA, and told the other members that he was heading out to grab a book (or a magazine – the specifics vary from source to source.) Whether this was his true intention was never made clear. One thing we know for sure: he never ended up buying that book.

At some point during his walk down Hollywood Boulevard, he was approached by a street preacher who told him of a nearby mission operated by a notorious Christian sect. The sect (which, in reality, was a full-blown cult – completely unaffiliated with the church) was called Children of God.
