Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson is reflecting on her rise to fame and what ultimately became a tumultuous relationship with her mother, Mama June, in the trailer for her upcoming Lifetime biopic, “I Was Honey Boo Boo.” The film — which is narrated by Alana — tells the story of her childhood on the child pageant circuit, which turned her and her family into reality television stars on TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras.” The first look teases how Alana (Vale Cooper) struggles under the pressure from Mama June (Chelsea Larkin), whom Lauryn “Pumpkin” Efrid (Georgia Small) learns has “spent all the Honey Boo Boo money,” before June faces scandals and legal trouble. “It was always the same thing. I wanted Mama, but her love was only transactional,” the real Alana says in a voiceover, before she’s seen with tears streaming down her face, “For the first time, I feel free.” Per Lifetime, through the biopic, Alana, now a college student, is “determined to shake off the labels that have followed her, shed light on the darker side of child stardom and forge a path to overcome generational trauma and challenges.”
