Stephen Colbert’s Big Emmy Night Earned Him ‘The Last Laugh’

Published

2026 Apple TV's Primetime Emmy Party

Stephen Colbert’s Late Night run might be over, but fans are convinced he went out with a bang.

Following the cancellation of his late-night show, Colbert enjoyed a triumphant return to the spotlight after he and his production team took home major honors at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The emotional victory prompted fans to share their support online, with many noting that he may have had the “last word” over the network that canceled his show.

Taking the stage on Monday, September 14, Colbert accepted the trophy for Outstanding Variety Series alongside the cast and crew of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The win came nearly four months after the series wrapped its 11-year broadcasting run on May 21.

During his acceptance speech, the host celebrated the hard work of his 200-plus staff members, using his time at the podium to pitch his former crew to hiring managers across the entertainment industry.

“Thank you so much on behalf of the over 200 people who threw themselves at this show for 11 years to try to do the best show they possibly could for you,” he said, as reported by People Magazine.

The TV personality noted that putting together such late shows requires a lot of work. He praised his team for putting in their best to make the show possible, and concluded by thanking the guests, his wife, and the audience for watching.

Fans Hail Stephen Colbert’s Emmy Victory As An Ultimate Statement Against Network Cancellation

Building on the emotional momentum of the final award win, social media platforms immediately exploded with reactions celebrating the late-night icon’s victory over corporate and political pressure.

Viewers flooded digital platforms to frame the prestigious win as a symbolic triumph over corporate leadership at CBS and political hostility from Donald Trump.

“A perfect signing off for The Late Show. Trump and his cronies might have gotten him canceled, but Colbert got the last laugh, as he took home an Emmy: just another award that Trump will never receive. Suck on that, MAGA,” one fan wrote.

“God, I miss his show so much. It was an island of relief in the ocean of Trump insanity, and kept us anchored in this MAGA anarchy. I hope he comes back in some form soon,” another fan lamented.

One fan noted that Colbert was “still making sure the crew gets the last word,” and another pointedly joked that the victory must’ve felt “like bile in Trump’s mouth.”

Before taking the stage to accept his award, Colbert made a memorable appearance on the red carpet, sporting a gray goatee.

During the red carpet interview, the 62-year-old comedian emotionally reflected on reuniting with his former production crew.

Colbert explained that his primary motivation for attending the ceremony was to support his former colleagues, who had already secured six technical awards at the Creative Arts Emmys the previous weekend.

“I’m here to celebrate all my staff! They won six Emmys last weekend at the Creative Arts. My writers, my digital team, cameraman, director, lighting, technical direction. It was just – I’m so proud of them,” he gushed to People Magazine.

Setting the stage for their Primetime Emmy night victory, Colbert’s late-night franchise first dominated the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier in September.

The program capped off its 11-year run on CBS by securing multiple honors across major creative and technical categories. According to The Blast, the show picked up trophies for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

The series also swept technical categories, picking up wins for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming, Outstanding Lighting Design, and Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork. Adding to the streak, the franchise’s digital companion series, “Colbert Before Air,” claimed the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series.

Stephen Colbert’s Final On-Air Prank Forced CBS Into Post-Broadcast Licensing Deal

The Emmy sweep provided a celebratory conclusion to the host’s run, but a mischievous stunt from the show’s May 21 finale ultimately left CBS with a huge legal bill.

During his final broadcast, Colbert delivered a playful jab at CBS by highlighting strict copyright enforcement surrounding the “Peanuts” television music catalog.

“Peanuts is a powerful brand and corporation in and of itself. Anyone illegally using that music is going to have to pay through the nose,” he joked, per The Blast.

Although it was presented as a joke, Lee Mendelson Film Productions, Inc. subsequently confirmed a formal licensing agreement with CBS to resolve the unauthorized performance.

Investigation Into Death Turns Cross-Country

UPDATE: Investigation Into Death Of Hayden Panettiere Reportedly Turns Into Cross-Country Investigation

The investigation into the death of Hayden Panettiere has reportedly turned into a cross-country investigation.

Investigation Into Death Of Hayden Panettiere Reportedly Turns Into Cross-Country Investigation

According to CNN, federal authorities are now looking into whether Panettiere “obtained illicit drugs from a dealer in Southern California.” At this time, the Drug Enforcement Administration and authorities in Los Angeles have questioned “several people” about the actress’s passing. Specifically, the investigation appears to be focused on whether she was “taking what was described as counterfeit oxycodone” at the time of her death. To note, the Los Angeles Times reports that such pills “have repeatedly been found laced with fentanyl.”

CNN adds that at this time, South Carolina’s Greenville County coroner has not released Panettiere’s autopsy report. Nor has the 36-year-old’s cause of death or manner of death been released. This, reportedly, because her toxicology results remain pending.

“Hayden’s death remains under investigation, and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed. As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time,” Sloan Ellis, a South Carolina attorney for Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s boyfriend, reportedly told the press.

More On The Death Of Hayden Panettiere & Investigation

As The Shade Room previously reported, Hayden Panettiere was found unresponsive in an apartment in the Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Per the Los Angeles Times, it was suspected that she had gone into cardiac arrest after a possible overdose. CPR was reportedly performed, and Narcan was administered to the actress at the scene. However, she was ultimately pronounced deceased.

Brian Hickerson was reportedly present when officers arrived and gave authorities a “bag of medications,” per the outlet. Per WYFF, Brian’s brother, Zach, was also present at the scene.

“I observed ZACH to be very emotional while EMS were working on HAYDEN. Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased,” the police report reads.

Per TMZ, Brian and Zach were recently arrested following a bar brawl, reportedly sparked by hecklers sharing comments about Panettiere’s passing.

“It’s just super frustrating all that we’ve been through and all the rumors that get started, and then people believe them, and then they attack as a result of the rumors. That’s what pisses me off,” Zach reportedly told TMZ following the arrests.

The New York Post reports that Brian Hickerson has met with the DEA amid the investigation. However, it remains unclear what he has shared.

Megan Stalter’s Emmy Awards Statue Move Backfires Online

Published

on

Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter at the 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards

Megan Stalter is getting slammed for her outfit to the Emmy Awards.

The actress who received her first-ever Emmy nomination this year showed up to the red carpet as a life-sized statue to the iconic awards. Backlash quickly followed online as many netizens did not applaud the outfit choice.

While other entertainers have paid homage to the trophy over the years by wearing metallic, structured, statue-inspired outfits, Megan Stalter is the first to go all out with the unique look.

Stalter made heads turn, and mouths gasp when she stepped onto the red carpet at the 2026 Emmys on Monday night, dressed as a gilded award statuette. She was covered in gold paint from head to toe with complementary golden wings and accessories.

The actress completed the Awards-inspired fit with a huge golden atom featuring elements of the trophy, symbolizing the arts and sciences in television. Stalter stepped onto the carpet as a walking trophy, posing for individual photos and with other entertainers.

Photos uploaded to Page Six show the TV star on the red carpet with “Hacks” co-star Paul W. Downs, hoisting the atom aloft while he puts his arms around her gold-painted waist. Another picture features Downs with Stalter, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello holding on to the golden atom above their heads.

Internet Users Ignited Heavy Backlash At The Actress

The online community did not find beauty or humor in Stalter’s outfit this year, and they wasted no time expressing their opinions. “If this isn’t a cry for attention, then I dunno what is. #Sad #PlayedOut #Forgettable,” a fan commented under a clip of Stalter posing at the Emmys.

“She tries too hard, she looks so ridiculous, and that comes from someone who loves her and Kayla in Hacks,” a separate fan noted, with another adding, “she came down with a sickening case of drag delusion.”

Different internet users called the comedian out on not being funny, with one tagging her as predictable in a comment which read, “I genuinely don’t understand how you people are entertained by her predictable shenanigans.”

The critics did not end there, as one X user went as far as suggesting that Stalter was suffering from a “mental problem.” A user’s comment, which appeared to show concern, read, “Isn’t she famous enough now to not do this shit anymore? She’s so fab, and I just want her in a sickening look.”

Others threw shade at the “Hacks” star’s body, writing, “more like a Golden Globe” and “There ain’t enough gold paint in the world…”

Megan Stalter Previously Raised Eyebrows With Her 2025 Emmy Outfit

This year’s attire is on the opposite end of the spectrum from her outfit last year. Stalter went viral for attending the event wearing a pair of light-wash Levi’s jeans and a white Hanes T-shirt, along with a black tote bag with the words “Cease fire!”

Earlier this year, at the Critics’ Choice Awards, the “Hacks” co-stars, Stalter and Downs, paired up to dress in matching bright orange outfits. They cosplayed as Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet in knockoffs of the leather Chrome Hearts fits the lovebirds wore to the “Marty Supreme” premiere last December.

Stalter was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for playing Kayla Schaefer in HBO Max’s comedy series. Although she came to the event as a life-sized award, she did not go home with the actual trophy. Kate O’Flynn went home with the win for her role in “Widows Bay.”

Stalter was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but grew up in Dayton as the eldest daughter of divorced parents. The love for performance, acting, and all things theatre was there from her childhood, which led her to join the drama club in high school.

The actress forsook her love for performing for a while after high school and went to community college to study teaching and nursing, which proved difficult. Stalter then took up improv acting classes before pursuing comedy seriously in Chicago in her early 20s.

For eight years, the entertainer juggled nannying, making a social media presence, and building her career. She landed her breakout role on “Hacks” after she caught the eye of one of the showrunners and actors, Downs. He told Glamour that they wrote her character into the script after seeing clips of Stalter online.

“Meg was doing characters online that had that exact quality, and she was so funny that, as we polished the pilot, we added ‘think Megan Stalter’ to the script,” Downs told the outlet.

Why Megan Stalter Would Be ‘Deleting My TikTok Page’

Amid the ICE protests, especially after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, Slater announced she would be leaving one of the buzzing social media platforms. She shared that she attempted to post anti-ICE content showing her distaste for the federal agents and supporting the immigrant community.

According to the comedian, her content was blocked from reaching a larger audience despite several attempts. As shared by The Blast, Stalter tried to put up the video for hours and even tried to fool the algorithm by masking the content as comedy.

“Hi, so today I will be downloading my videos and deleting my TikTok page. ‘TikTok is under new ownership, and we are being completely censored and monitored,’ she wrote in an Instagram post. The actress also urged her followers to follow suit; however, her Tiktok page remains active.

‘Foundation’ Star Officially Goes Dark in Brutal First Look at New Horror Film [Exclusive]

Published

on

BLOODY-TENNIS

Sports and horror are a rare pairing, yet Fantastic Fest is about to give genre fans their second combination of the two in as many years. In 2025, Him took the field, mixing football and the macabre in a story about an up-and-coming quarterback being invited to train with an aging superstar at his isolated compound, where the methods employed are more than a little sinister. Neither critics nor audiences were big fans of the film in the end, though, despite interesting ideas and strong performances from the starring duo of Tyriq Withers and Marlon Wayans. Now, Bloody Tennis will attempt to take the niche subgenre and serve up a winner in its North American premiere at the country’s most prestigious event for genre filmmaking.

As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview series, we’re thrilled to share a new look at the brutal thriller that shows exactly where the title comes from. Bloody Tennis unfolds at a prestigious girls’ tennis academy where, like Isaiah’s compound in Him, violence is part of the regimen and only the hungriest, most cutthroat players will survive. At the center of the experience is Sophie (Sandra Guldberg Kampp), who is slowly exposed to the academy’s extreme methods when she’s enrolled over the summer. As she slowly builds bonds with her fellow young players, their circumstances grow from strange, like being constantly served bizarre red, chunky smoothies, to creepy, with leeches applied to help performance. Getting further into the program and getting better only gives the Academy more hold over Sophie, and the push to reach greatness at all costs only grows.

Our exclusive image shows Sophie observing the results of her training in the mirror. A large, bloody gash just below her eye leaves streaks of crimson down the left side of her face, as she looks detached and borderline unfazed by the damage. The academy encourages a singular commitment to winning on another level, where bodily harm and sacrifice are viewed not as problems to correct, but signs of commitment to be rewarded. It’s an illustration of the key behind Bloody Tennissatire about the modern world that glorifies and expects the grind. Buying into the academy’s logic won’t just cost Sophie her own blood, sweat, and tears, though. The cost of her ascension will be paid by the people around her, with whom she’s experienced friendship, rivalry, and desire.

your skin. This is the one built out of your particular fear, why it works so well on you, and what
it would leave behind.

A Nightmare on Elm Street · Since 1984

Elm Street

Your nightmare does not wait outside the door. It waits for you
to close your eyes, which you are going to have to do eventually, because nobody has ever
won that particular argument.

  • Freddy is horror’s cruellest idea: a threat that lives in the one place you cannot
guard, cannot lock, and cannot avoid forever.
  • You are the person who lies awake running through it again. Your own mind is where this
starts and where it does the damage.
  • These films understood exhaustion as a horror engine. The kids on Elm Street do not lose
because they are weak. They lose because they are tired.
  • You can lock every door in the house. You still have to sleep.

Child’s Play · Chucky · Since 1988

Chucky

Your nightmare is not really the thing itself. It is the face of
the person you tell, and the way they decide, very kindly, that you have imagined all of it.

  • Chucky works precisely because he is absurd. That is the trap: the more accurately you
describe him, the less anybody is going to believe you.
  • You know the specific loneliness of being right while everyone around you is being
    reasonable at you.
  • The franchise is at its best when the adults in the room are the real obstacle, and you
    have met those adults.
  • By the time somebody finally believes you, you will have handled most of it on your own.

Scream · Ghostface · Since 1996

Scream

Your nightmare has your number, knows your name, and has almost
certainly been inside your house before. The worst part is that you already know them.

  • Scream is the only one of these where the monster takes the mask off and turns out to be
somebody who was at the party.
  • You watch people. You notice the small wrong notes in a conversation, and you have never
entirely been able to switch that off.
  • The franchise made the rules of horror part of the plot, which means the survivors are
the ones paying attention. You would be paying attention.
  • Everybody is a suspect, including the person who just offered to walk you home.

The Conjuring · The Warren Files · Since 2013

The Conjuring

Your nightmare is not really about you. It is about the people
asleep down the hall, and the fact that you are the one who moved them all here.

  • The Conjuring films are domestic horror. The house, the family, the perfectly ordinary
room that quietly stops feeling ordinary.
  • Your fear is protective rather than personal. What frightens you is failing somebody,
    not being hurt yourself.
  • This is the one franchise where belief is the weapon. The people who come through it are
the ones who are not alone and refuse to be.
  • Whatever is here did not come for you. It came for the household, and you are the one
    standing in the hallway.

Who Will Hit the Court for ‘Bloody Tennis’?

BLOODY-TENNIS

Kampp takes the court in Bloody Tennis after most recently reprising her role as Thalis for one episode in Season 3 of the Apple TV sci-fi series, Foundation. She’s joined by a talented international cast including Zlatko Burić, who’s had a busy year between Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, Wonder Man, and The Bride!, alongside Elina Löwensohn, Tracy Gotoas, Helena Zengel, Lily Taïeb, Juliana Vieira Guerra, Lucie Zhang, and Vincent Romeo. Behind the camera, meanwhile, was writer-director Nikias Chryssos with a much bloodier follow-up to their music drama Rave On, released last year. The sports horror feature earned solid marks from the few critics who saw its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, but Shudder felt confident enough in its blend of blood, stomach-churning violence, and emotional coming-of-age elements to purchase the rights to distribute it starting September 25, even before then.

First, Bloody Tennis makes its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 20. The festival begins this week on September 17 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. Check out our exclusive image above and stay tuned here at Collider for more new looks throughout the rest of the week as we gear up for the event’s 21st edition. More information on each entry can be found on the official Fantastic Fest film guide.

Inside Pierce Brosnan’s US Open James Bond Moment

Pierce Brosnan at Los Angeles premiere of 'Once Upon a Time In Hollywood'

Pierce Brosnan simply can’t shed the James Bond skin; at least the US Open camera person will not let him.

The phenomenal actor who played the fictional secret agent attended the US Open men’s final, and his stage presence was once again a topic of conversation.

Featured in the media coverage, the sports cameras took a long shot, making Pierce Brosnan one with his James Bond character. The brief yet eye-catching moment has since gone viral and sparked some controversy.

Brosnan had a memorable 007 moment during the US Open men’s final between Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton. The game had barely begun when the television director played a witty pun, seemingly after spotting the actor in the stands.

Most of the time, the cameras cut to the time clock just before it changes to the exact match time, to let viewers know how much time has elapsed in the game.

At the September 13 men’s singles final, the cameras focused on the Rolex time clock, which read 0:07, then quickly cut to Brosnan, who was watching the game from the stands while chewing on something, probably gum or a snack.

In case you didn’t know, 007 is James Bond’s specific M16 service code number, which made that moment during the game significant. Social media users quickly resonated, praising those covering the game. “Genius,” a fan commented under ESPN’s Instagram reel of the shot, which they captioned “shot of the tournament.”

A different commenter wrote, “Give that cameraman or camerawoman a raise,” a comment that has gotten nearly 5,000 likes. Praise for Brosnan for his portrayal of James Bond from 1995 to 2002 filled the comments.

“Pierce Bronson [sic] was an underrated James Bond,” a user noted. “The only James Bond I acknowledge,” another added, while a separate user wrote, “He’s who comes to mind when I think of James Bond.”

Inside Netizens’ Feud Over The Actor’s Character

Others noted that the TV star looked so good, tagging him as the “OG James Bond,” and that he could still play the character even though it had been over two decades since he dropped the role.

Amid the applause, internet users weighed in, comparing Brosnan to the other actors who played the character in different years of the franchise. A fan stirred up controversy with a comment that began by praising Brosnan as an “underrated actor” but went on to say, “Unfortunately, his portrayal as James Bond was abysmal.”

“I needed more grit, and he hadn’t delivered. The best bod we have gotten thus far is probably Timothy Dalton. Daniel Craig delivered an extraordinary performance in all his films,” the comment continued. In response, a netizen expressed that they always fell asleep watching Craig, but never with Brosnan.

“Abysmal, I would love to see you do better, abysmal?!” a different user fired back. Another also disagreed, writing that Craig clears Dalton. A separate fan penned “GoldenEye is still a classic,” to which another agreed, stating that GoldenEye was one of the second-highest-selling games of all time.

Auditions for the next 007 agent in the James Bond film franchise have taken place, and there has been swirling speculation about who the next star will be. Brosnan revealed that there are many talented actors vying for the role in Denis Villeneuve’s film; however, he thinks they might cast an unknown actor.

“I have no desire to see myself in Bond. I’m just a member of the audience now awaiting the next Bond and wishing him well,”  The blockbuster actor clarified in an interview with The Times. He has since stepped away from the role after 2002’s “Die Another Day.”

The TV personality did not name any potential M16 agents for the upcoming film, but his “Thursday Murder Club” costar, Tom Ellis, said in an interview with Metro UK that Brosnan had told him he would “make a good Bond.”

Craig took over from Brosnan in 2006 and played the character for nearly two decades. He stepped away from the iconic role in 2021, leaving viewers wondering who the next star actor would be.

Gary Oldman recently revealed that the next legendary secret agent has already been chosen, and a big public reveal is brewing. The Blast shared that he also disclosed that he is rooting for a particular actor to bag the role. Oldman revealed that Jack Lowden was among the entertainers who auditioned and made the shortlist.

George Clooney, on the other hand, believes Callum Turner would be the perfect choice to step into Bond’s shoes. Notably, the franchise is seeking a young actor who can portray the character over an extended period across multiple films.

Earlier this year, Brosnan appeared at the London premiere of his sports biopic, “Giant,” in which he stars as a boxing trainer who led four boxers to win world titles.

His outfit channeled his inner 007, with a look strikingly similar to his James Bond alter ego. According to Hello! Magazine, the actor exuded suave sophistication as he posed for the cameras on the red carpet in his stylish black suit.

Other cast members of the show looked sharp in their fits, including Amir El-Masry, who plays Prince Naseem Hamed in the biopic, dressed in a stylish black tuxedo.

He was joined by the film director Rowan Athale, and the duo posed for pictures on the red carpet. Arian Nik, Katherine Dow, and Olivia Barrowclough also made their appearance at the premiere, wowing fans with their stunning fits.

Looks like Pierce Brosnan has resurrected the ultimate question: who is the next James Bond?
