Bachelor in Paradise Joe Amabile is on the mend after undergoing brain surgery.

“So happy to be back home with Joe,” Amabile’s wife, Serena Pitt, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, August 8, sharing a pic of her husband lounging on a couch in their New York City apartment watching golf.

She continued, “Lots of rest and recovery ahead of us.”

In a follow-up post shared to her feed, Serena wrote, “Incredibly grateful to the team at NYU Langone Health for their endless patience, care, compassion and kindness these past few days. Joe is home recovering, and we’re so grateful to have been in such good hands.”

Joe, 40, underwent surgery last week after doctors found a tumor in his brain.

“They got it all!” Joe wrote via Instagram on Thursday, August 6, alongside a slew of post-op selfies from the hospital.

Serena, 28, had stayed by her husband’s side throughout his hospitalization.

“The best update: they were able to remove the entire tumor,” she gushed via her Instagram Stories later on Thursday. “Joe is recovering really well. We’re feeling so grateful.”

Joe, who met Serena on season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise, revealed his diagnosis last month.

“So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo [full body scan] results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain,” Joe said in a July video shared via Instagram. “Then, I had to go get a brain MRI and there was a blueberry size lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor. I now need to get brain surgery next week to get it removed and get it tested.”

The former grocery store owner continued, “And then we’re going to go from there. So it’s been a wild couple weeks. I definitely wasn’t expecting this. I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this will never happen to me.’ And here I am.”

Joe further noted that the tumor was in the “really early stages” and physicians were hopeful about removing the entirety of it.

“This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least. After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor,” Joe captioned his upload at the time. “In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed — yeah brain surgery — @memorialsloankettering. I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends.”

Days later, Joe addressed his decision to have brain surgery on an episode of the couple’s “Not Married to This” podcast.

“It was, we’ll never know what this is by just monitoring it. We will only know by taking it out or or biopsying it,” Joe acknowledged. “And from my understanding, they only do biopsies in the brain if removing it is very dangerous. But where mine is located, it seems like it’s a less dangerous scale to remove it. I mean, the surgery is very dangerous. [A] craniotomy … is scary. It’s a serious surgery.”

Kelly Clarkson transformed a potential wardrobe malfunction into an unexpectedly candid celebration of her body during her latest Las Vegas performance. While speaking to the audience at Caesars Palace on Saturday, August 8, Clarkson noticed that her sheer crop top had started riding up. Realizing that the “universe” might interpret the policy as another negative statement, Clarkson quickly amended her language. She joked that the people excluded by that rule were simply “on a different path” from her.

The lighthearted correction eventually led to a more vulnerable discussion about unhealthy relationships, self-worth and the effects of growing up without positive examples. “It’s a reality for a lot of us,” Clarkson said. “We [weren’t] handed people that found worth in us, like, we deserved better, you know?”

The singer acknowledged how early experiences can affect someone’s relationships later in life. “That’s a tough thing to grow up with, that’s a tough thing to overcome [and] that’s a tough thing to find healthy relationships when you’ve never been shown one,” she continued. “Those are all excuses; I learned that in therapy.”

Grantchester’s mysteries-of-the-week aren’t all that complicated; a crime is committed, Sidney and Geordie investigate, a couple of red herrings lead them down the wrong path and the real killer is revealed. But the key to the show’s charm — and why it lasted as long as it did — is that its characters are so damn charming. Sidney and Geordie have a classic good cop/bad cop relationship, while supporting characters like Mrs. C and fellow priest Leonard (Al Weaver) give Grantchester the found-family dynamic that sets it apart from other crime shows. ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ (2022) – BritBox

‘Why didn’t they ask Evans?” Those are the last words said by Alex Pritchard (Leon Ockenden), who is found dying at a rocky beach by a shocked Bobby Jones (Will Poulter). Bobby doesn’t know the man, but he’s disturbed enough by his death to find out why someone pushed him off a cliff – and what his dying message meant. With the help of his friend and potential lover, sophisticated socialite Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton), Bobby interrogates Britain’s wealthy class to solve a mystery that someone is willing to kill to keep unsolved.

You can’t have a cozy murder mystery list without an Agatha Christie adaptation, and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? checks all the genre’s essential boxes. ‘The Marlow Murder Club’ (2024–Present) – PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video

The small English village of Marlow is quiet, quaint and too good to be real. When not one but two murders rock the community, several of its citizens decide to investigate the murders and keep the town’s reputation from falling even further into the gutter. While Judith (Samantha Bond), Suzie (Jo Martin) and Rebecca (Cara Horgan) don’t have any experience solving crimes, they make up for it by sheer gumption — and a successful track record of catching bad guys.

Well-done historical films often strive for accuracy, meticulously recreating costumes, settings, and real-world events in an effort to transport audiences back into the past. But sometimes the most fascinating way to explore history is by asking a simple question: what if things had gone differently? Alternate history stories take familiar timelines and twist them, imagining worlds where scientific breakthroughs arrive earlier, wars end differently, or hidden forces reshape the course of events entirely.

The results can be far more imaginative — and sometimes more revealing — than traditional period pieces. By bending reality, filmmakers gain the freedom to explore deeper cultural anxieties, political tensions, and philosophical questions that might otherwise remain hidden. So, whether through satirical mockumentaries, speculative science fiction, or bold genre mashups, these are the films that transform history into something thrillingly unpredictable.

‘C.S.A.: The Confederate State of America’ (2004)

Presented as a satirical television broadcast, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America imagines a chilling alternate timeline in which the Confederacy won the American Civil War. Framed like a documentary airing on a fictional Confederate television network, the film depicts a modern America still governed by slavery, racial hierarchy, and deeply ingrained systemic oppression. Through fake commercials, news segments, and historical retrospectives, it constructs an unsettling version of history that feels disturbingly plausible.

What makes the film so effective is its commitment to the format. Writer-director Kevin Willmott uses the mockumentary structure to expose the absurdity and brutality of institutional racism by presenting it through the mundane language of everyday media. The result is both darkly satirical and deeply uncomfortable. Indeed, rather than romanticizing the past like many traditional period pieces, C.S.A. weaponizes history to confront audiences with a version of America that forces difficult reflection.

‘Never Let Me Go’ (2005)

Set in an alternate version of late-20th-century England, three children are raised at an idyllic yet strangely secluded boarding school, Hailsham. As they grow older, the trio gradually learns the devastating truth about their purpose: they have been created to serve as organ donors, destined to sacrifice their lives so that others may live longer. Despite this looming fate, their lives unfold through friendships, jealousy, and love.

Never Let Me Go has proved itself as a haunting piece of alternate history in how quietly it presents its premise. The world looks almost identical to our own, with the dystopian reality revealed ever so slowly through subtle details rather than dramatic exposition. Of course, Kazuo Ishiguro‘s source novel lays the foundation for this retrained approach. However, credit must be given for the film’s ability to explore questions of humanity, morality, and what it means to live a meaningful life. Instead of rewriting history through spectacle, Never Let Me Go imagines a society shaped by a single scientific advancement — and the moral cost that follows.

‘Anastasia’ (1997)

In this animated re-imagining of Russian history, after the fall of the Romanov dynasty, two charming men plan to pawn off a phony Princess Anastasia look-alike to earn a reward from the Dowager Empress (Dame Angela Lansbury). Luckily for them, Anya (Meg Ryan) — a young woman suffering from amnesia — stumbles into the auditions, bearing a striking resemblance to the missing Princess. Little do they know, she is exactly the woman they are looking for.

While it does take enormous creative liberties with historical fact (note the megalomaniac lich sorcerer), Anastasia transforms tragedy into a sweeping fantasy adventure. The film blends alternate history with vibrant fairy tale elements, turning the mystery of the Romanov daughter’s fate into a lush animated musical. Sure, historians may raise their eyebrows, but between the story’s romantic optimism and rich visual style, Anastasia creates a sweeter version of history that feels far more magical than reality. Plus, at least this one is perfect for the whole family.

‘District 9’ (2009)

When a massive alien spacecraft arrives above Johannesburg in an alternate 1982 (and then seemingly stalls), humanity discovers its passengers are stranded extraterrestrial refugees. Decades later, the aliens have found themselves confined to overcrowded slums, while corporations exploit their technology. Meanwhile, government agent Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) becomes entangled in the conflict after a mysterious accident begins transforming him into one of the creatures himself.

As a critically acclaimed sci-fi flick, District 9 brilliantly fuses the genre with alternate history by showcasing an apartheid society through the lens of extraterrestrial contact. The film’s documentary-style storytelling and gritty realism make its premise feel disturbingly believable. Rather than a traditional alien invasion tale, District 9 uses the vague framework of “history” to examine prejudice, exploitation, and systemic injustice with striking power.

‘Richard III’ (1995)

Richard (Sir Ian McKellen) from the House of York dreams of nothing more than to become a fascist dictator — even if those ambitions require him to take out members of his own family.

Director Richard Loncrain merges stage theatrics with cinematic spectacle, creating a world that feels both historical and eerily modern. ‘April and the Extraordinary World’ (2015)

In a version of 1940s France, where the Franco-Prussian War was averted following the sudden death of Napoleon III, the world’s greatest scientists have mysteriously vanished for generations, leaving technological progress frozen in time. While young April (Marion Cotillard) spends her life searching for her missing parents — brilliant researchers who may hold the key to humanity’s stalled future — her journey leads her into secret societies, hidden laboratories, and a conspiracy stretching across the globe.

The film’s alternate timeline creates a fascinating world where steam technology dominates and modern innovation never fully arrives. Starting out as a playful sci-fi premise, Lola captivates audiences as it gradually evolves into something far more unsettling. The sisters’ attempt to manipulate the timeline creates ripple effects that reshape the war and ultimately spiral beyond their control. ‘Inglourious Basterds’ (2009)

In a tale set during World War II, audiences are met with two parallel storylines: a group of Jewish-American soldiers hunts Nazis across occupied Europe, while a wronged young woman named Shosanna Dreyfuss (Mélanie Laurent) plots revenge against the regime that murdered her family. In true Quentin Tarantino fashion, Inglourious Basterds delivers one of the most audacious alternate-history twists ever put on screen. Blending razor-sharp dialogue, unforgettable performances, and nerve-wracking suspense, this film proves that alternate history can sometimes be more cathartic — and definitely more thrilling — than traditional historical drama.

My Life With the Walter Boys is returning for season 4 on Netflix — but is every cast member coming back to the show.

Based on Ali Novak‘s book, My Life With the Walter Boys follows recently orphaned Jackie, a teenage girl from Manhattan who relocates to rural Colorado after she is taken in by the Walters, a family of seven sons and a daughter.

In addition to Nikki Rodriguez, the show stars Noah LaLonde, Ashby Gentry, Johnny Link, Corey Fogelmanis, Connor Stanhope, Zoë Soul, Jaylan Evans and Sarah Rafferty.

Before the show returned for season 3, Rafferty promised to Us that season 3 was worth the wait.

“We’re about to finish filming! I just came home from Calgary this weekend for this,” Rafferty shared in November 2025. “It’s getting very cold there. It’s so fun.”

Rafferty, who plays Katherine, gushed about her time on set.

“I can tell you that those actors are as easy to love as their characters. They are all the salt of the earth,” she noted. “I think season 3 is chef’s kiss — it’s so beautifully shot and cinematic and has such wonderful story lines.”

Viewers will quickly find themselves “really invested” courtesy of the characters. “I’m really excited for everybody to see season 3,” Rafferty added. “I’m so grateful for how season 2 was received — really grateful.”

She concluded: “The show just keeps progressing and getting more and more beautiful and intriguing. We’ve got such great guest characters and such beautiful locat

Season 3 ultimately concluded with Cole ending up in a serious car accident, which questioned the character’s future on the show.
