Netflix’s 10-Part Mystery Thriller Is the Best Rewatch on the Platform Right Now

Published

Jason Segel looking through a machine at Eve Lindley's head in Dispatches From Elsewhere

Dispatches from Elsewhere is a series unlike any other, blending sincerity, comedic moments, and themes of uncertainty. The show aired on AMC in 2020 and was canceled after one season. It was quietly released in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and soon afterward disappeared, which is a shame because, underneath all the scavenger hunts, cryptic flyers, performance-art chaos, and talking fish, is one of the most emotionally honest shows Netflix has picked up in years.

According to reports, however, Dispatches from Elsewhere exits Netflix on June 4, which gives viewers a pretty short window to discover a series that feels like somebody turned loneliness, quarter-life panic, and urban mythology into television.

‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ Starts Like a Conspiracy Thriller

Peter (Jason Segel) is stuck in the kind of life that feels less miserable than numb. He works a forgettable job at a music streaming company, drifts through the same routine every day, and looks permanently exhausted in the way people do when they’ve quietly given up on being surprised by life. Then he notices a strange flyer, which leads him to the Jejune Institute, a bizarre organization run by the hypnotically theatrical Octavio Coleman (Richard E. Grant), with the exact energy of a man who may either enlighten you spiritually or rob you blind. Soon, Peter is caught up in an alternate reality game that spans the city and features secret societies, hidden clues, missing artists, and a lady named Clara who may or may not exist.

During this adventure, Peter meets three other players: Simone (Eve Lindley), an artist attempting to escape her feelings of isolation; Fredwynn (André 3000), a conspiracy theorist whose brain is much faster than his social skills; and Janice (Sally Field), a lonely empty nester searching for something new to do in her life. The show follows all the characters as the game begins to bleed into reality, or maybe reality starts bleeding into the game.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

The Cast Is What Makes ‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ Work

At times, Dispatches From Elsewhere comes dangerously close to being utterly bizarre. There are parts where it seems as though the creator of this show had an emotional meltdown after spending one weekend watching Pushing Daisies, Twin Peaks, and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. In some instances, it is brilliantly executed, but in other respects, Dispatches is almost too eager to demonstrate its whimsy; the cast keeps everything level, however

Lindley is easily the standout. Simone could’ve become the kind of “mysterious free spirit” character audiences have seen a thousand times before, but Lindley gives her a guardedness that keeps the performance from floating away into cliché. There’s real exhaustion underneath her charm. Meanwhile, André 3000 turns Fredwynn into something unexpectedly sad. He plays him as if he has been analyzing human behavior his whole life without ever actually connecting with anyone. As always, Field effortlessly conveys deep sadness through her performances. Finally, Grant has an uncanny ability to exude warmth and comfort while also giving off an eerily unsettling demeanor.

Jason Segel Made a Mystery Show That’s Really About Loneliness

What separates Dispatches from Elsewhere from many puzzle-box mystery shows is that it eventually stops caring about the puzzle.

There are clues hidden everywhere, secret messages tucked into random conversations, entire sequences built around deciphering nonsense, but the actual point of the series becomes pretty clear halfway through. These are people who feel disconnected from the world around them. Peter feels invisible; Simone keeps people at arm’s length because she’s tired of getting hurt; Janice built her entire identity around taking care of other people and suddenly has no idea who she is anymore; and Fredwynn hides inside theories and patterns because they make more sense to him than human relationships do. The game forces them to find one another.

The show is best watched as a binge; if you only watch one episode per week, it is likely frustratingly abstract, since you don’t have any emotional connection to the character while you’re waiting a week to see them again. By watching the entire series in one sitting, you quickly form an emotional connection to the journey.

Once you complete the series and arrive at the strange and very meta ending, it no longer feels like a sci-fi mystery; rather, it feels much more like a story about creativity, regret, human connection, and the almost desperate need we humans have to believe there is always some magic hidden in the mundane everyday activities of our lives.

Under-Rated Sci-Fi Thriller Saves The Universe With Murder

Under-Rated Sci-Fi Thriller Saves The Universe With Murder

By Robert Scucci
| Published

One of my favorite modern time travel movies has to be 2024’s Tim Travers and the Time Traveler’s Paradox. It’s a movie about a guy who repeatedly tries killing his past self, only to learn that he broke the space-time continuum, resulting in thousands of clones of himself. He doesn’t know how to break the cycle, and each attempted fix for his botched experiment continues to make things exponentially worse. While watching 2022’s Madelines, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities, which made me think the two films would make a great double feature.

Madelines, while ridiculous on its own terms, feels more subdued thanks to its willingness to play things a little straighter. Most of the humor in Madelines is situational, whereas Tim Travers takes a more slapstick approach while tackling the same kind of paradoxical storytelling that most good, low-budget time travel movies are known for.

From One To Many

Madelines 2022

The premise of Madelines is painfully simple before it veers into the kind of unhinged time-travel logic you’re typically used to. Madeline (Brea Grant) and Owen (Parry Shen) finally think they’ve cracked the code for time travel, but Madeline doesn’t want to start animal trials because she thinks it’s cruel. Her investor, Rory Devonshire (Richard Riehle), couldn’t care less because he just wants results.

Thinking that the only ethical way to push the research forward would be to test the technology on herself, Madeline takes one for the team, not realizing there was an error in her code, leading to an unthinkable number of alternate versions of herself generating like clockwork every day.

Madelines 2022

From this point forward, and this is why the film would play perfectly against Tim Travers and the Time Traveler’s Paradox, Madeline and Owen decide that the best course of action is to kill every new Madeline as they poof into existence. The operation becomes less about extolling the virtues of time travel and more about cleaning up their mess in the form of repeatedly murdering Madeline until they can figure out how to close the loop.

Matters get complicated, however, because each new version of the scientist eventually develops her own unique experiences. And now that they’re all aware of each other, closing the loop becomes a process that’s a bit more complicated than, “We need to murder Madeline in perpetuity.”

Doesn’t Quite Stick The Landing

Personally, I think Tim Travers and the Time Traveler’s Paradox is, overall, the stronger movie. I give it more credit for going full ridiculous while attempting to answer the same kind of questions Madelines poses. Both films stand on their own, but Madelines is more introspective and contemplative, reluctantly dealing with its open-loop disaster while trying to reclaim its protagonist’s humanity. Tim Travers, on the other hand, is a total agent of chaos who ultimately loves what he’s doing in the unhinged name of experimental science. Madeline is Lisa Simpson. Tim Travers is Pickle Rick.

If you’re into low-budget sci-fi with surprisingly sound time travel logic, I strongly recommend watching both films as a double feature. They tackle many of the same ideas, but their execution couldn’t be further apart.

As of this writing, you can stream Madelines for free on Tubi. Tim Travers and the Time Traveler’s Paradox can be found on the platform as well.

3 Prime Video Series You Need To Binge Before the End of June

Published

on

Megyn Price and Patrick Warburton in Rules of Engagement

After briefly losing the top spot, Louisa Levy’s Off Campus is once again the number one show on Prime Video this week. Inspired by Elle Kennedy’s book series, the show stars Ella Bright and Belmont Cameli as a music student and a star hockey player who find unexpected romance. The romance drama series has been quite acclaimed and popular since its premiere in May, but in case you’re in the mood for something a little different this week, there’s still a lot more to explore on the streaming service. Here’s a look at three great shows that we think you should binge on Prime Video this week.

For more recommendations, check out our list of the best shows and movies on Prime Video.

1

‘Rules of Engagement’ (2007–2013)

Created by Tom Hertz, Rules of Engagement is a CBS sitcom that revolves around a group of friends: a married couple, an engaged couple, and their single friends. The show follows their interpersonal relationships and the many hilarious complications of dating and marriage that they run into. The series stars Patrick Warburton, Megyn Price, Oliver Hudson, Bianca Kajlich, David Spade, and Adhir Kalyan in lead roles, with several notable recurring and guest stars including Curtis Armstrong, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and more.

Produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, Rules of Engagement aired a hundred episodes across seven seasons, earning largely negative reviews throughout that time. But even though critics never really warmed up to it, the show proved quite successful with audiences, garnering good ratings. The series also received three Emmy Award nominations and won four BMI Film & TV Awards for Best TV Music.

2

‘Primeval’ (2007–2011)

A British sci-fi TV show created by Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges, Primeval follows a group of scientists as they investigate several temporal anomalies that appear across the United Kingdom. With creatures from the distant past and future threatening the present, the scientists help deal with the fallout of these anomalies while simultaneously uncovering a plot to bring about the end of the world. The show stars Douglas Henshall, James Murray, Andrew-Lee Potts, Lucy Brown, Hannah Spearritt, Juliet Aubrey, Ben Miller, and more in key roles across seasons.

Back when Primeval first premiered in 2007, the show was rather unfavorably compared to Doctor Who, but as the first season progressed, the critical and audience response grew ever more favorable. By the end of its five-season run, the show was a widely acclaimed international hit, having grown into a unique sci-fi series in its own right. Often ranked among the best British sci-fi shows of all time, Primeval went on to spawn a multimedia franchise that includes novels, games, a spin-off series, and merchandise.

3

‘Small Axe’ (2020)

An anthology series of five films, Small Axe is a British series created and directed by Steve McQueen that explores the history of West Indian immigrants in England across three decades. Spanning the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, each installment of the anthology explores a different story set against the backdrop of real events. The anthology features a star-studded ensemble cast across its five films, with Letitia Wright, John Boyega, Malachi Kirby, Micheal Ward, Shaun Parkes, and more in key roles.

Small Axe premiered at the 2020 New York Film Festival and screened as part of the Cannes Film Festival the same year, earning near-universal acclaim from both presentations. A powerful, educational, and inspirational anthology that covers political realities, personal struggles, and emotional moments with equal care, the series has since grown to be acknowledged as one of the finest miniseries of the 21st century. Though it’s relatively underrated these days, Small Axe earned several accolades at the time of its release, including a Golden Globe, a Peabody Award, and six BAFTAs.

Cowboys Cheerleaders Fan Favorite Reece Weaver Explains Decision to Retire How Marriage Has Evolved

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was questioned after a woman accused him of abuse and neglecting his “special needs” child in favor of playing video games.

Police reportedly investigated claims made against Smith, 35, over the weekend, according to TMZ. No charges were filed against Smith and “the case is no longer open,” NFL reporter Andy Slater said on Monday, June 22

A woman named Kristen posted a since-deleted video via Instagram on Sunday, June 21, where she alleged the NFL star was abusive and neglectful.

“Today is the DAY!” she captioned the video. “GENO SMITH beat my ass cause he HATES taking care of his special needs kid and can’t be left alone with him because he’d rather watch s*x online and play Call of Duty.”

The mother of Smith’s son, who goes by Ken on social media, defended the NFL star amid the allegations.

“Geno is and always has been more than capable of taking care of his son,” she wrote via her Instagram Story on Sunday alongside a photo of the quarterback holding Seven. “Let’s kill that narrative. Don’t get on the internet bringing my son into your web of dysfunction.”

Meghan Markle’s Encounter With Serena’ Mom Resurfaces

Published

Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle attends womens final match at US Open Championships between Serena Williams (USA) and Bianca Andreescu (Canada) at Billie Jean King

One of Meghan Markle‘s infamous moments has resurfaced amid her longtime pal’s return to the field!

Before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, the former actress formed a strong bond with Serena Williams. They have frequently supported each other over the years, but recently sparked rift rumors.

However, a resurfaced video capturing Meghan Markle’s behavior during a 2019 run-in with Serena Williams’ mother seemingly hints at trouble in their relationship years earlier.

The drama occurred in 2019 when Williams was competing in a singles final match against Bianca Andreescu at the US Open. A video focused on the VIP stands showed the athlete’s mother, Oracene Price, seated next to Meghan, who attempted and failed to strike up a conversation with the older woman.

Body language expert Judi James weighed in on their interaction, theorizing that their behavior showed signs of pre-existing “tension” between Williams’ mother and the Duchess of Sussex. James called Meghan out for acting for the cameras, telling The Daily Mail:

“There’s a suggestion that the cameras have triggered her professional actress traits as she mimes tension, support, and even affection via some rather theatrical-looking movements.”

The Duchess Of Sussex’s Priorities Differed From Serena Williams’ Mother

James noted that Meghan probably opted for more performative movements instead of copying Price’s silent but focused demeanor during the match to avoid appearing cold on camera. However, the body language expert claimed her choice was the wrong move.

“The silent stare and hushed stillness of Serena’s mother would be a more authentic response to tension,” James explained, stating that Price prioritized staying focused on the match. The expert described her behavior as being “in the zone” and “oblivious to any external noise.”

On the other hand, Meghan allegedly prioritized leaving an impression for the cameras. James recalled that she had just welcomed her son, Prince Archie, months before the match and evidently wanted “the world to know that she is there to support her friend.”

The Video Resurfaced Amid Rift Speculations

The resurfaced video follows speculations of a rift between Meghan and Williams. The allegations began after the tennis icon dropped a botched promotion for the Duchess’s As Ever brand, which some fans saw as shady.

In the post, Williams filmed herself opening a box of Meghan’s chocolates, with many of the pieces out of their assigned slots. She confessed in the video that she wasn’t a fan of chocolate, but she enjoyed the Duchess’s treats.

The athlete also tried to promote the entrepreneur’s candles, but couldn’t pronounce some of the ingredients and gave up halfway. Fans slammed the post as a “very poorly done promotion,” with some wondering if Williams was subtly shading Meghan.

Serena Williams Scores Wild Card To Play Singles At Wimbledon

The attention on Williams and Meghan’s relationship may be linked to the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year honoree’s return to tennis. Many are eager to see if the Duchess will return to the stands to cheer for the athlete.

After spending six months in the anti-doping testing pool, Williams became eligible to enter events in February. She recently earned a wild card to play singles at Wimbledon, an event she hasn’t won since 2019, per CBS Sports.

The tennis icon last played singles at a WTA Tour event in September 2022 during the third round of the 2022 US Open. When asked if she would consider a singles return at Wimbledon earlier this month, Williams implied that it was out of the question, saying:

“You think I’m ready for singles? I need to get to work.”

Meghan Markle May Not Be Welcomed In The UK

Besides the speculations of tensions in her friendship with Williams, the As Ever founder has been making headlines for her scheduled return to the UK. The Blast reported that she, her husband Prince Harry, and their two children were expected to visit in July.

The rare family trip would mark their first visit to the UK since 2022, when the couple stepped down from their royal duties and relocated to the US. Royal commentator Phil Dampier theorized the trip wouldn’t be as easygoing as the Sussexes might expect.

Dampier argued that many still blame Meghan for Harry’s estrangement from the Royal Family, warning that she might face hostile reactions from the public upon her arrival. He added that the Sussexes were likely to receive a warm welcome at the Invictus Games compared to being out in public.

Tom Holland Confirms Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Main Villain Still Hasn’t Leaked

Marvel fans have spent months trying to uncover every secret hidden within Spider-Man: Brand New Day. From theories surrounding Sadie Sink’s mysterious role to speculation about multiple villains appearing in the film, nearly every aspect of the movie has become the subject of intense debate online.

But according to Tom Holland, fans still haven’t figured out the movie’s biggest mystery.

Speaking about the highly anticipated film, Holland confirmed that the identity of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s main villain has not leaked, despite countless rumors and theories circulating across social media. The actor has become famous for accidentally revealing spoilers throughout his Marvel career, making his ability to keep this secret under wraps all the more impressive.

The revelation only adds to the growing intrigue surrounding the film. Recent trailers have teased an unseen threat wreaking havoc across New York City, with Peter Parker facing an enemy unlike anything he has encountered before. The footage shows destruction on a massive scale while deliberately avoiding revealing exactly who is responsible, leading fans to speculate about everyone from classic Spider-Man villains to entirely unexpected MCU newcomers.

Holland has previously described Brand New Day as something of a detective story, with Peter investigating a dangerous mystery while also dealing with strange new changes to his own powers. The actor has repeatedly called the film a fresh start for the character following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker now operating completely on his own in a world that has forgotten who he is.

That secrecy has only fueled fan excitement. Every trailer frame is being dissected for clues, and theories continue to spread regarding the identities of both the mysterious villain and Sadie Sink’s undisclosed character. Yet Holland’s latest comments suggest that Marvel and Sony may have successfully pulled off one of their most closely guarded secrets in years.

Adding to the anticipation, industry trackers have reported massive interest in the film as ticket sales continue to surge, positioning Spider-Man: Brand New Day as one of the biggest movie events of 2026.

For now, however, fans may have to accept that the movie’s greatest mystery remains exactly that: a mystery.

And if Tom Holland is telling the truth, the villain hiding in the shadows is someone no one has guessed yet.
