Only 5 MCU Heroes Are Smarter Than Tony Stark

Published

on

In the MCU, the name Tony Stark commands considerable respect. Within the franchise’s context, the now-deceased, self-described “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” was the former co-leader of the Avengers and the ultimate savior of the universe, sacrificing his life to wipe Thanos (Josh Brolin) from existence. In real life, Tony is an icon of superhero cinema, resuscitating Robert Downey Jr.‘s career and becoming the MCU’s face for all intents and purposes. The character’s eventual death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame marked the end of an era for the franchise and, arguably, superhero cinema as a whole.

One of the reasons for Tony’s popularity is his intelligence. Widely considered one of the smartest characters in the MCU, Tony is behind many of the franchise’s most important breakthroughs. For starters, he single-handedly provides the tech that makes the Avengers work, including the suits of many superheroes, including Spider-Man (Tom Holland). He also discovered how to travel through time using the Quantum Realm, thus allowing the time heist that eventually saved the universe from Thanos’ plans. Yes, it wouldn’t be an understatement to say Tony is the smartest character in the Marvel Universe, except it’s maybe not exactly true. Indeed, at least five characters in the MCU are smarter than Tony, which is no small feat. Moreover, two of those are still quite young, meaning they have their whole lives ahead to further surpass Mr. Stark in the intellectual department.

Let’s kick off this list with a divisive entry that revives the age-old MCU debate: is Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) smarter than Tony Stark? Well, it depends, but for the purposes of this list, we’ll go with “yes.” Bruce is the world’s leading authority on gamma radiation and biochemistry, holding seven (!) PhDs and participating in many of the series’ most influential events. Notably, he’s one of the few characters who could match Tony in the MCU’s early days, with the two collaborating in several projects, most notably the creation of the android Vision (Paul Bettany).

In the MCU, Bruce’s most notable feats apart from Vision include co-designing the Hulkbuster armor and perfecting the time machine alongside Tony. He also has a mind for problem-solving — for example, he’s the one who suggests separating Vision from the Mind Stone, and he’ll also help Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Bruce also cracked the code to “solve” his own dilemma, combining his intellect with The Hulk’s sheer strength to create the controversial but no less impressive Professor Hulk persona. Sure, the answer as to who is smarter between Bruce and Tony is less straightforward than it might seem, but there’s no denying that Banner is at the very least on the same level.

Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart (Dominique Thorne)

An intellectual prodigy and MIT student who became a superhero on merit alone, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) is among the newest additions to the MCU. Introduced in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri is recruited by Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) to fight in Wakanda. Later, following her expulsion from MIT, she returns to her Chicago home, where she finds herself in the middle of a battle between science and magic.

Riri’s intelligence allowed her to build a suit of armor that rivals Tony’s in her college dorm room using only scraps and basic tools. Moreover, her suit has a vibranium detector, a powerful tool that made both Talokan and Wakanda take interest in her. Tony was considerably older when he built his suit, so Riri already has a head start. Furthermore, her suit doesn’t have the same energy issues as Tony’s original design because it runs on batteries powered by solar and wind energy. Ironheart’s suit is literally eco-friendly, meaning she’s both smart and socially conscious. It’s a shame her solo show didn’t quite work, but here’s hoping we see her again in the MCU, sooner rather than later.

Queens, New York

🕷️ Spider-Man

You carry the weight of the world on shoulders that are younger than they should have to be — funny, loyal, and endlessly self-sacrificing.

  • You do the right thing not because it’s easy, but because no one else will.
  • You understand that responsibility isn’t a burden you choose — it’s one that finds you.
  • Whether it’s a neighbourhood mugging or a multiverse crisis, you show up.
  • Peter Parker’s lesson — that great power demands great responsibility — isn’t a slogan to you. It’s the code you live by, even when it costs you everything.

Hell’s Kitchen, New York

😈 Daredevil

You fight in the shadows between law and chaos, guided by a fierce moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk free.

  • You use every tool available — your mind, your body, your faith — to protect those the system overlooks.
  • You’ve looked into the darkness and chosen not to become it, though the line has never been easy.
  • Matt Murdock’s duality — champion in the courtroom, devil in the alley — mirrors your own.
  • Relentless, conflicted, and unwilling to stop. That is exactly you.

Stark Industries, Malibu

🤖 Iron Man

Brilliant, driven, and occasionally insufferable — but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem.

  • You lead with your mind and back it up with resources, innovation, and a stubbornness that borders on heroic.
  • You started out looking out for yourself, but somewhere along the way the world became your responsibility.
  • Tony Stark’s arc — from ego to sacrifice — is your arc too.
  • You build, you plan, and when the moment comes, you’re willing to give everything. Because in the end, you’re Iron Man.

New York City

💀 The Punisher

You’ve been through fire that would break most people — and it did change you, completely. What’s left is unyielding, relentless, and operating by a code forged in grief.

  • You don’t ask for forgiveness, and you don’t expect gratitude.
  • You see a corrupt, broken world and you’ve decided to do something about it, consequences be damned.
  • Frank Castle’s war is born from love twisted by loss — and so is yours.
  • Uncompromising and unflinching — the world may not agree with your methods, but your conviction is absolute.

Asgard · Protector of the Nine Realms

⚡ Thor

Powerful, proud, and on a lifelong journey to become worthy of the legend you carry.

  • You lead with strength but have learned — sometimes painfully — that true greatness comes from humility and growth.
  • You’re larger than life, yet more vulnerable than you let on.
  • Thor’s story is one of transformation: from arrogant prince to worthy king, from isolated warrior to beloved protector.
  • You bring the storm when it’s needed — and the warmth when it matters just as much.

Brooklyn, New York · The Avengers

🛡️ Captain America

You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will.

  • You don’t bully the small guy, and you never stop when it gets hard.
  • Steve Rogers didn’t become a hero when he got the serum — he was always one. So were you.
  • Your strength isn’t in your fists; it’s in your refusal to compromise what’s right, no matter the cost.
  • In a world full of people taking the easy road, you’re the one who picks up the shield and stands up — every single time.

Shuri (Letitia Wright)

Shuri is the princess of Wakanda and the current Black Panther, protecting her country from outside threats while also leading the Wakandan Design Group. She was first introduced in 2018’s Black Panther, immediately making a strong impression thanks to her mighty intellect and spirited personality. In Wakanda Forever, she’s far physically stronger and more resilient, relying on both her intelligence and mental fortitude to lead her people.

There really is no argument here: Shuri is more intelligent than Tony. A master of nanotechnology and biomechanics, she’s the main driving force behind Wakanda’s impressive technology, leading many of the country’s modern and more experimental inventions, including the powerful Black Panther nanotech suits she and her late brother used. Shuri also understands and is capable of weaponizing vibranium far better than anyone else in the MCU, making her a key player on the geopolitical stage and possibly the only person in the world capable of exploiting the rare metal. There’s also the fact that she’s been officially declared the smartest character in the MCU, so there’s that.

Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal)

Fans had eagerly been awaiting the debut of Marvel’s First Family since the MCU first started expanding. However, they had to wait nearly two decades since the franchise began to finally see the Fantastic Four on the big screen. The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces the titular family in all their swinging ’60s glory, focusing on Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal) and his efforts to defend his world from the threat of the planet eater, Galactus (Ralph Ineson).

In the comic book lore, Reed and Tony are considered equals, but in the MCU, the former arguably surpasses the latter. Tony might’ve cracked the secret to time travel, but Reed managed to find a way to transport an entire freaking planet to another solar system. He then built the teleportation devices to make it happen, and his plan actually worked. That takes some serious mental prowess, since we’re talking about moving millions of people light-years away from their point of origin. Based on the post-credits scene in Thunderbolts*, Reed also cracked the secret to interdimensional travel, another feather in his already considerable cap.

Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry)

Some of you might object to including Phastos in this list, but the fact of the matter is, he arguably has more knowledge than most other characters in the MCU. As an Eternal on Earth since the dawn of humanity, he has been alive for millennia, accumulating knowledge and sharing it with humanity, contributing to their technological development and directly influencing most of the most important breakthroughs in the species’ history.

In his first appearance in Eternals, Phastos is seen helping humans develop their civilization. He eventually comes to regret his influence after humans find a way to turn technology into something destructive, building bombs and other weapons of mass destruction. In a way, everything that Tony ever did was only possible because of Phastos. Sadly, Eternals flopped quite spectacularly, so the chances of ever seeing this character again are slim to none. It’s a shame, because it would’ve been great to see him interacting with the other characters on this list and realizing his technology could also be applied for the greater good.

Come Back, Sis! Rihanna Has Fans Begging For Her Return After Message At Jay-Z's Concert (WATCH)

These days, catching Rihanna outside could just mean her on an NYC stroll with her three kids. But on Sunday, July 12, mama mode gave way to superstar energy! She popped out for night three of Jay-Z‘s concert, and her Navy (fans) lost it as clips hit the internet. And what really had everyone in a chokehold was the message she shared about performing!

RELATED: Crazy In Love! Jay-Z Brings Out Beyoncé At His First Yankee Stadium Show & Fans Are Losing It (VIDEO)

Rihanna Says She Misses Performing

Jay-Z is celebrating 30 years of his music with an anniversary concert that has had social media users popping off all weekend. From bringing out Beyoncé during night one to Eminem and Pharrell doing their big one on night two. Then, on Sunday, Rihanna stepped on a stage inside Yankee Stadium for the first time in two years, per PEOPLE. She linked with Jay-Z to perform their 2010 hit track ‘Run This Town.’ Also, she performed another Rihanna classic, ‘B*tch Better Have My Money.’ At one point, the singer said, “Oh my God, I missed this sh*t y’all,” adding, “New York, I love you guys.”

Jay-Z Has Fans Swooning With Special Tour Guests

Rihanna wasn’t the only guest to rock night three in Yankee Stadium! Jay-Z had the venue popping off and hundreds of people singing along to not only his classics, but other hip hop greats. Usher, for example, took a break in between Washington D.C. tour shows with Chris Brown, to pop out for Jigga on Sunday! Jeezy, Clipse, Jermaine Dupri also took the stage for the 30th anniversary concert close-out.

By the time it wrapped, Jay-Z had brought out his wife, Beyoncé, their firstborn daughter Blue Ivy and former nemesis, Nas. On night two, Eminem, Slick Rick and Pharrel wowed the audience. Off the stage, Michael B.Jordan’s appearance at the show turned heads.

Social Media Begs For Rihanna’s Return

Hearing Rihanna speak of performing had fans dreaming of that long-teased new album! The last time the pop star blessed her Navy with a full-length project was ‘Anti’ in 2016. She toured that year between March and November. Over the years she’s assured fans that new songs have been recorded and that an album is in the works. Back in 2021, for example, she claimed that fans aren’t going to expect what they hear! While fans wait to see how true her statement lands, she’s released some new music including ‘Life Me Up’ and ‘Born Again’ in 2022 for a ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack. Also, she’s taken the stage for private shows, but her biggest one since the ‘Anti’ ended appears to be the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2023. After Rihanna’s message in Yankee Stadium, it seems the world wants to see more of the artist who over 21 years ago gave us the hit song, ‘Pon De Replay.’

Rebecca Ferguson Is Officially the Queen of Sci-Fi on Apple TV

Published

on

rebecca-ferguson-silo-season-2

Rebecca Ferguson is having quite an interesting year, with three distinct releases in the sci-fi genre. In December, she will return as Lady Jessica in Denis Villeneuve‘s hotly anticipated trilogy-capper Dune: Part Three, after playing the memorable character in the first and second films. The movie is set to clash at the box office with Avengers: Doomsday, which shows just how confident Warner Bros. is about its success. In all probability, Dune: Part Three will be a huge success both critically and commercially, but Ferguson didn’t have the most auspicious of starts to her year. In January, she starred alongside Chris Pratt in the movie Mercy, which underperformed at the box office after receiving poor reviews.

Ferguson played an artificial intelligence-powered judge in the poorly received film, while Pratt starred as a police officer accused of murdering his wife. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Mercy is a “screenlife” movie in which the majority of the action unfolds entirely on digital devices. The movie now holds a 24% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Constricting its two stars inside an airless presentation of a clunky techno-thriller premise, Mercy is tedious enough to make you cry uncle.” However, the film received an encouraging 81% audience score on the website, which was helpful when it began its streaming run on Prime Video. In theaters, however, Mercy grossed just $54 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million.

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

Rebecca Ferguson Is on a Sci-Fi Streak this Year

Ferguson’s comeback has already begun with her second sci-fi project of the year. She recently returned to Apple TV with the third season of her critically acclaimed series Silo. The show premiered in 2023 and has been renewed for a fourth and final season that’s set to be released in 2027. Silo holds a 93% overall score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the third season has cemented itself as the best of the bunch with a perfect 100% score. The aggregator’s consensus reads, “Silo codifies its third season as a masterful dystopian tale with expertly driven character arcs and tighter narrative strings, fulfilling its promise of science fiction excellence.” The positive reviews have no doubt benefited Silo significantly in terms of viewership, and according to FlixPatrol, the show has now spent 500 days on the domestic Apple TV chart. The First MCU X-Men Team-Up Is Already A Disappointment

The First MCU X-Men Team-Up Is Already A Disappointment

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

For Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, the X-Men are something of a Holy Grail. Before Disney bought 20th Century Fox, it was impossible for these mutants to appear alongside heroes like Captain America or the Hulk. After the purchase, it was possible for the X-Men to appear, but we only got small hints here and there, like an alternate-universe Xavier in Multiverse of Madness and Beast popping up after the credits in The Marvels. Relatively speaking, why has Marvel been holding back? Simple: they have been working on an X-Men movie that will bring the team into the MCU rather than just giving us more multiversal cameos.

After the Avengers: Secret Wars reboots this cinematic universe, future MCU movies will finally include everyone’s favorite merry mutants. Before that, though, we’re getting one last multiversal cameo, and it’s a doozy. Avengers: Doomsday will feature appearances from several iconic characters from the original 20th Century Fox films, including Professor X and Magneto. This is a big deal because it’s basically the first onscreen X-Men team-up in the MCU. Unfortunately, that team-up is destined to be a disappointment because most of the characters we are going to see have never had much chemistry together.

A Blast From The Past

The early X-Men movies copied the vibe from the original comics, presenting the team as a kind of found family (albeit a dysfunctional one). Cyclops and Jean Grey were like cool older siblings to the young students, while Storm was a really intense den mother. Wolverine, in turn, was basically a protective older brother to fellow newcomer Rogue. Charles Xavier, of course, was the father of the group, which is only fitting; after all, far too many of his young mutant charges had been rejected by their biological families. Xavier offered these gifted children the chance to start over with someone who truly cares about them.

What does this trip down memory lane have to do with Avengers: Doomsday? The earlier X-Men films leaned into their dysfunctional dynamics and allowed different characters to bounce off of each other in fun and exciting ways. For example, there’s a tense love triangle between Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine, and a slow-burn romance between Rogue and Iceman. But we’re not likely to get great interactions out of the X-Men in Doomsday because the team lineup is so dysfunctional. The film features Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, Xavier, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Gambit. While these characters are interesting on their own, most haven’t had much onscreen chemistry in earlier films.

When Frasier Has The Blues

kelsey grammer beast

For example, Cyclops is here, and it will be exciting to see him kick some Sentinel butt. But he won’t have Jean or Wolverine to interact with, which is deeply unfortunate. Scott’s always been stuck with the straight man role, but that only works if he has someone else (like someone more passionate) to bounce off of. Out of this Doomsday lineup, Xavier is the only one he has much of a relationship with, and it looks like most of the professor’s time will be spent bonding with his favorite frenemy, Magneto, who himself has no other former Brotherhood villains but Mystique to interact with.

Beast is also here, and while Kelsey Grammar is perfect in the role, he didn’t interact with many team members back when he first appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand. That’s because he had long since left the school and become a politician. Like, Xavier is literally the only mutant that he previously spoke with who is returning for Doomsday. Similarly, while Alan Cumming is great as Nightcrawler, he mostly interacted with Storm and Jean Grey back in X2: X-Men United. Neither of them is in Doomsday, so we won’t be getting a tearful reunion or anything.

A Failed Gambit

Mystique will be in Avengers: Doomsday, and in the original films, her closest relationship was with Magneto. However, when we last saw them together, he abandoned her once she lost her powers, and she betrayed him by giving his location to the FBI. The upcoming film may retcon this; otherwise, if this is supposed to be the same universe, we’ll have to re-establish her relationship with Magneto and everyone else. That goes double for Gambit, who never appeared alongside any of these characters and has only appeared in the MCU as a gag character in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Now, maybe Avengers: Doomsday is going to do an excellent job establishing the relationship between a bunch of characters who have never had much chemistry or shared much screen time, but that’s doubtful. After all, the X-Men are just one part of a film that will be crawling with cameos from so many other heroes and villains, leaving very little time to build new dynamics. This is basically the opposite approach of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which leaned into the existing relationships between Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and villains like Doctor Octopus. In Doomsday, almost all of these X-Men relationships must be built from the ground up.

Again, all of these X-Men performers are great on their own, but most of us were hoping to see a team that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Avengers: Doomsday drops December 18, and we’ll find out whether the first MCU team-up featuring these marvelous mutants is better than it looks on paper. If so, I’ll be happy to eat crow and admit I was wrong. If not, you can join the rest of me in hoping that the mutants will have much better chemistry in the upcoming X-Men film!

Originally released in 1984, A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced audiences to Freddy Krueger, the razor gloved dream stalker who became one of horror’s most recognizable villains. With Paramount now steering Freddy’s next chapter, horror fans can finally look forward to the return of one of the genre’s greatest icons.

This Secret Theory Perfectly Explains The Backlash To The Odyssey

This Secret Theory Perfectly Explains The Backlash To The Odyssey

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is an ambitious attempt to transform one of the greatest works of literature into a crowd-pleasing blockbuster. The director certainly has the skills to do so; after all, this is the man who turned prettyboy comic actor Heath Ledger into the scariest villain to ever grace the silver screen. He’s also the man who turned the life of Robert Oppenheimer (not exactly a massively popular historical figure) into a smash summer hit. If there’s anyone who deserves the benefit of the doubt, it’s Nolan. Nonetheless, the movie has faced ample criticism since it came out, with most complaints focused on casting.

To nobody’s shock, most of the complaints come from right-wing figures like Elon Musk, who has echoed Matt Walsh’s complaints about Nolan casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Others have griped about things like the accents (including a pronounced Boston accent) in the previews. Beyond the usual boring culture war stuff, it can be hard for casual film lovers to understand what is causing these gripes. However, complaints about this literary adaptation can mostly be explained by a popular literary theory that goes by a very unexpected name: the Tiffany problem.

Boys, Meet Tiffany

What’s the Tiffany problem? This theory was created in 2018, when English novelist Nicola Cornick explained that the word “Tiffany” originally comes from the medieval girl’s name “Theophania.” Around the year 1200, the French spelled the word “Tifinie,” and by the year 1600, the English were spelling the word “Tiffany.”  Therefore, as Cormick explains, it would be historically accurate for a book or movie to have a 17th-century character named Tiffany, but writers never do this because the name Tiffany sounds too modern. After all, use of the name peaked in the ‘80s, nearly four centuries after it was first used.

So, what does this have to do with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey? The reason writers steer clear of naming those modern European characters “Tiffany” isn’t because the name is inaccurate but because audiences think the name is inaccurate. The vast majority of people enjoying historical texts are not historians, so they don’t have a very granular knowledge of the time period in question. Instead, they have a bunch of assumptions and half-baked ideas gleaned from God knows what, and they get annoyed (and even outright offended) at, say, a movie whose characters don’t look and sound like what they imagined.

Time To Hit The Books

When Homer wrote The Odyssey, he didn’t really describe Helen’s features but instead focused on her beauty. Now, the critics of Nolan’s film are correct that the average Greek woman of the time period was not Black, like Lupita Nyong’o’s Helen. Nonetheless, ancient Greece did have Black people, and some scholars of the original text have argued that Helen could have been a woman of color. One counterpoint critics bring up is that Homer does refer to Helen as “white-armed,” which modern readers might assume means she was white-skinned.

But white-armed was not a racial description so much as an epithet for noble women who don’t have to spend time outside, where the sun would darken (or further darken) their flesh. Therefore, Nyong’o playing Helen is perfectly reasonable and doesn’t contradict the original text. It’s also worth noting that when you ask these critics who they’d prefer in the role, they usually throw out names like Sydney Sweeney. Newsflash: while the average ancient Greek woman wasn’t Black, she also wasn’t a blonde, and her skin would have been far darker (brown, in all likelihood) than Sweeney’s.

Fake Complaints From Fake Fans

In other words, these complaints about Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey aren’t based on any deep knowledge of the original text or the time period. They are based instead on the personal biases of the critics who don’t care about ahistorical casting choices as long as it involves an actor they like. Nolan basically invoked his own version of the Tiffany problem: there were Black women in Ancient Greece, and Homer says surprisingly little about the character’s physical features, so having Helen be a Black woman is perfectly reasonable. In fact, Orson Welles cast Earth Kitt in the role back in 1950! But because the average person hasn’t read The Odyssey and doesn’t know Ancient Greece had Black people, they think Nolan’s casting is completely unrealistic.

To some degree, this extends to complaints about the accents in the film as well. While nobody in Ancient Greece spoke with these accents, they also didn’t speak English. The only way to make The Odyssey completely realistic would have been to have everyone speaking Greek, but that doesn’t really work for a Western summer blockbuster. Like so many directors before him, Nolan had the cast speak English in deference to the audience. Haters think the accents stand out because they are accustomed to classic works with English accents. But that leads to two questions: 1) why do we find some accents more acceptable than others? And 2) why did these guys not complain about Brad Pitt spending all of Troy using a jarring “British meets American” accent?

Facts Over Feelings

Lupita Nyong’o in Black Panther

Obviously, a fair share of the people whining about The Odyssey before it comes out are stirring the pot of the culture war and just looking for an excuse to meet their daily “whine about Black people and trans people” quota. But anyone who, in good faith, thinks the casting of the film is an issue should consider the Tiffany problem. What Christopher Nolan has done by casting Lupita Nyong’o is perfectly realistic from both a historical and a literary lens; it just “feels” weird to those who haven’t read the original poem or ever cracked a book about Ancient Greece.

Sorry, guys: as you used to say with a bit of pride, facts don’t care about your feelings!

Dave Chappelle Surprised Usher At His Concert In Washington, D.C.

Usher was in the middle of his performance at the Northwest Stadium just outside of Washington, D.C., when he saw Chappelle in the crowd. As the ‘Yeah!’ singer jumped off the stage during the ‘Nice & Slow’ part of the show, carrying a red Goyard bag, he had a perplexed expression on his face.

After he squinted, Usher exclaimed, “Is that Dave Chappelle?”

At that moment, Chappelle popped into the camera frame with a cocktail and a cigarette in tow. Judging by the look on his face, the comedian appeared to be well-served as the crowd went wild.

The two men shook hands as Usher kept performing. The artist usually hands out fake cash from the Goyard bag during the show, and after he handed a stack to Chappelle, the comedian threw some toward the backup dancers.
