Meghan Markle’s anniversary celebration with Prince Harry unexpectedly turned into a major moment for Paula Abdul

The pop icon revealed she was stunned to discover the Duchess of Sussex had chosen one of her classic songs for a heartfelt social media tribute marking eight years of marriage.

The sweet post, featuring never-before-seen wedding photos and family moments with Archie and Lilibet, quickly caught Abdul’s attention, leaving the singer emotional over the royal shoutout and eager to personally thank Meghan afterward.

Abdul revealed she was completely caught off guard after Meghan Markle featured her hit song during a recent Instagram tribute celebrating eight years of marriage to Prince Harry.

The “Forever Your Girl” singer spoke about the moment while attending the 2026 American Music Awards on May 25, admitting the unexpected gesture meant a lot to her.

“I was in shock and I was so touched,” Paula told E! News. The music icon explained that moments like that still felt special to her despite decades in the entertainment industry.

“I never take anything for granted with my career, I never have,” she said, adding, “And so, I’m always humbled to have little gems like that appear in my life. It’s very touching.”

Abdul also noted that after seeing the post, she personally reached out to Meghan to show gratitude.

“I just texted her back, saying, ‘What beautiful pictures and thank you so much for using my song,’” the 63-year-old explained.

Besides speaking about the major moment at the AMAs, Paula Abdul also took to social media to express her shock and excitement.

As The Blast reported, the singer took to her Instagram story to repost Meghan Markle’s post. She added a caption, revealing that the song was the perfect choice for the celebration and wishing the couple a happy anniversary.

“So sweet to hear ‘Forever Your Girl’ over these beautiful memories. Wishing you both continued love, laughter, and a very Happy Anniversary! XoP,” Abdul wrote.

Meghan used Abdul’s music while sharing a collection of never-before-seen images from her May 2019 wedding to Harry.

“Eight years ago today,” the Duchess wrote alongside the anniversary tribute.

Meghan Shared Rare Family Moments With Prince Harry And Their Children

The anniversary celebration also included a sweet family moment involving the couple’s children, Archie and Lilibet.

One of the carousels featured black-and-white photos of Meghan and Harry sharing quiet moments in the cloisters of St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, where they said, “I do.”

Another slide showed Archie and Lilibet joining the festivities as they watched Prince Harry surprise Meghan with a special cake.

The intimate post offered another glimpse into the family’s private life, which Meghan and Harry usually keep away from the public eye.

Just days before celebrating their anniversary, the family also marked Archie’s birthday.

“7 years later. Happy birthday to our sweet boy,” Meghan wrote on Instagram.

Meghan Markle Previously Opened Up About Parenting And Self-Grace

Although Meghan and Harry have become more selective about sharing family content publicly, the mom of two has occasionally opened up about motherhood and raising young children while balancing work responsibilities.

The former “Suits” actress reflected on parenting during an interview for Harper’s Bazaar’s November 2025 issue. “I’m a mom with kids at that age where they are constantly learning something new,” Meghan explained.

She compared encouraging her children through difficult moments to showing herself patience as a businesswoman and founder.

Meghan continued discussing how parenting has changed her perspective, especially when it comes to handling challenges and mistakes.

“I watch them face things that feel completely insurmountable every day,” she shared, adding, “But you can remember and say, ‘I know it seems really hard right now, but trust me, that’s going to come so easily soon.’”

The 44-year-old explained that she tried to apply the same mindset to her own life and business projects.

“I can give myself the same grace as a founder. There’s no such thing as perfect. I, too, get to make mistakes,” Meghan said.

Meghan Markle Reportedly Carrying Financial Load As Harry’s Deals Slow Down

Although Meghan and Harry appear to have everything going on well, sources claim the pair are not doing so well financially.

According to a recent report from The Blast, insiders claimed “cash flow, or lack of it, is a major concern” for the couple despite their multimillionaire status.

Sources alleged their California lifestyle now costs roughly $6 million annually, with nearly half reportedly going toward private security for Harry, Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet.

Their expenses also allegedly include mortgage payments on their Montecito mansion, staff salaries, travel costs, and ongoing legal bills.

The report further claimed Meghan has effectively become the family’s “breadwinner” as Harry struggles to secure the same level of lucrative deals he once commanded after stepping back from royal duties.

Insiders alleged that Harry’s speaking fees have dropped from around $1 million to about $50,000 per appearance, while Netflix downgraded the couple’s deal to a “first look” arrangement and Spotify ended its partnership entirely.

According to sources, Meghan has been “working her socks off” on her As Ever brand and other ventures to keep finances steady because Harry is reportedly reluctant to dip further into inheritance money left by Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.

How Did Nate Jacobs Die on Euphoria? Jacob Elordi’s Exit Explained

Published

Who Could Die During the 'Euphoria' Season 3 Finale? All the Options

Euphoria surprised viewers by killing off Nate Jacobs — but how did Jacob Elordi‘s character die on screen?

Season 3 of the hit HBO show followed Nate as he struggled with the debt he owed to an Armenian mobster. He had several body parts chopped off while trying to find the money to clear up his issues. Nate even got his wife, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), involved and she started to make money on OnlyFans to support him.

During the Sunday, May 24, episode of Euphoria, Cassie was told she had 72 hours to get $1 million to save Nate. Viewers saw that he was trapped in a box underground and would soon die from dehydration. While Cassie was trying to find the money to free Nate, a snake entered his box and appeared to attack him.

Later in the episode, Cassie — with help from Maddy (Alexa Demie) and Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) arrived to save Nate. The only problem? He was already dead after several fatal bites from the rattlesnake.

Euphoria is building up to its third — and possibly last — finale with several characters potentially being set up for an onscreen death. Based on the Israeli series of the same name, Euphoria followed troubled high school student Rue (Zendaya) as she struggled to remain sober after rehab. The series also explored topics including […]

“That was a cool way to go. Nate was someone who has made so many mistakes and made so many dark choices,” Elordi explained in a segment that aired after the Sunday, May 24, episode. “It’s cool to see it all come to what it’s come to.”

Elordi recalled having to film in a coffin, adding, “My shoulders were touching the side and they couldn’t move my arms. Then they would drill the lid on it and it would get dark.
It was really nice, actually. It was quite peaceful in there.”

The stunt team, meanwhile, stressed how important it was to make sure the actor had oxygen. They praised Elordi for agreeing to spend “minimal time in the coffin.” Viewers may be surprised, however, to find out that creator Sam Levinson “wanted to shoot it with a real snake” so a rattlesnake and a boa constrictor were both featured on screen.

“Snakes were rattling, which was really alarming when you are locked in a box,” Elordi noted. “They had a boa constrictor that they put a fake rattler on the end of it.”

He continued: “He was super cute. He was really cuddly. So he kind of just sidled up next to me and it was nice. But he was really sleepy. He was a sleepy snake. I had to kind of nudge him to get him to come up. And that was it.”

At the end of the segment, Elordi reflected on his time playing Nate.

“It’s a bittersweet thing,” he said. “This show is a massive part of — not just my career — but my life. It’s been amazing and I’m so proud of being a part of this.”

Elordi has played Nate since the show premiered in 2019. Before the show returned, Elordi teased how viewers would meet Nate again in the third and likely final season.

“I finished filming a new season just recently, and it’s a completely different thing,” he shared on a December 2025 episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors interview. “I really do think [he will be nicer].”

Elordi continued: “Whether it works or not — I don’t know. There’s a chance that what I’ve done is not good.”

Black Eyed Peas Reunion Leaves Fergie Emotional

Published

on

Black Eyed Peas

Fergie fought back emotion as she reunited with the Black Eyed Peas onstage during the 2026 American Music Awards, marking one of the group’s most nostalgic moments in years.

Nearly a decade after stepping away from the chart-topping band, the singer stood alongside will.i.am, Taboo, and apl.de.ap after their hit “Rock That Body” won Best Throwback Song.

The moment quickly turned sentimental as Fergie reflected on old memories, loyal fans, and the surprising way the group’s music finally connected with her son, Axl.

The Black Eyed Peas took home the 2026 American Music Award for Best Throwback Song after their 2010 anthem “Rock That Body” beat out Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?”

The victory became even more memorable because it reunited Fergie with will.i.am, Taboo, and apl.de.ap onstage years after her 2018 departure from the group.

The emotional moment clearly hit hard for the singer as she addressed the audience during the May 25 ceremony hosted by Queen Latifah.

“What a moment,” she said per ET while standing beside her longtime bandmates. “I want to thank all of the fans for voting for this so I can stand up here right now with my longtime friends and brothers, the Black Eyed Peas.”

Fergie also reflected on the memories tied to the hit song and the era that helped define one of the group’s biggest periods of success. “In honor of this special song, this era, ‘Rock That Body,’ there’s so many memories along the line with that,” the singer revealed.

Throughout the speech, Fergie appeared emotional while tightly holding onto will.i.am and Taboo’s hands.

Black Eyed Peas Music Finally Reached Fergie’s Son

Despite spending years creating massive hits with the Black Eyed Peas, Fergie revealed that “Rock That Body” recently became especially meaningful because of her son, Axl.

The 51-year-old shared that fan-made videos online unexpectedly introduced the group’s music to her 12-year-old son with ex-husband Josh Duhamel.

As she addressed the crowd, Fergie thanked supporters for keeping the song alive through social media trends and nostalgic content.

“I want to thank everyone who made TikToks and Instagram videos and making this moment possible so that my son would put our song on his playlist,” she said.

The Grammy winner explained that seeing the continued love for the group’s music has often left her overwhelmed emotionally.

“To all of our supporters who have made content throughout the years, thank you so much,” she continued. “Sometimes, the content you make is so big and the feelings are so big for me it’s overwhelming to look because there’s so much love that you put into it and I just wanna say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Black Eyed Peas Reunion Gave Fergie A Full-Circle Moment

As the emotional speech continued, Fergie used the AMAs stage to send a sweet message directly to her son.

“And I get to now say this,” she teased, “I finally, finally get to say this on TV: ‘Hi Axl!’ ‘Rock That Body’ we did it!”

The touching reunion also reminded fans that, despite Fergie’s exit from the Black Eyed Peas years ago, the members’ relationship has remained close behind the scenes.

In fact, the group reunited privately not long ago to celebrate a major personal milestone together.

With Fergie, will.i.am, and Taboo all turning 50 in 2025, while apl.de.ap celebrated the milestone in 2024,  the longtime friends gathered for a special birthday celebration.

“Finally got to break bread and celebrate our milestone birthdays together,” Fergie wrote on Instagram in December, adding, “What a special night with my brothers, filled with so much love.”

Emotional Fans Share Their Thoughts On The Black Eyed Peas Onstage Reunion

Fergie’s emotional moment with the Black Eyed Peas members at the AMAs waited no time in going viral.

The video was shared on X, and die-hard fans trooped to the comments section to reveal how beautiful that moment was.

“I don’t think people understand how legendary this moment is,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Oh, this is beautiful, and can they go back to the studio and create magic again?”

Other fans revealed that their reunion felt nostalgic. “Not gonna lie…instant dopamine hit. I was the biggest fan in middle & high school, so this hit me right in the nostalgia,” one person noted.

Another shared, “Fergie back with the Peas on stage like that felt like someone hit rewind on my whole childhood playlist. Those early 2000s hits were everywhere growing up and seeing them link up again after all the solo stuff and time away just brings back that pure party energy.”

The Rise Of The Black Eyed Peas From Hip-Hop Crew To Global Superstars

Black Eyed Peas
MEGA

The history of Black Eyed Peas dates back to the late 1980s when will.i.am and apl.de.ap first met in Los Angeles and began performing together as part of a rap crew before eventually signing with Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records under the name Atban Klann.

After Eazy-E’s death and the shelving of their original album, the group reinvented itself in the mid-1990s as the Black Eyed Peas alongside Taboo, initially building a reputation in underground hip-hop with socially conscious albums like Behind the Front and Bridging the Gap.

The group’s mainstream breakthrough came after Fergie joined in 2001, helping transform the band  into one of the biggest pop acts in the world with hit albums like “Elephunk,” “Monkey Business,” and “The E.N.D.”

After several hiatuses and solo projects, Fergie eventually stepped away from the group, with J. Rey Soul later joining touring and recording efforts.

Seth MacFarlane’s Upcoming Fantasy Series Is Already Making a Big Mistake

Published

on

Carl and Princess Donut on the cover of the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG rule book.

Seth MacFarlane is one of the biggest names in animation meant for adults, which is why many fans are so shocked that his upcoming series Dungeon Crawler Carl will be live-action. The Dungeon Crawler Carl novels by Matt Dinniman have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and an adaptation will come with a huge built-in audience eager to see this outrageous sci-fi fantasy brought to life. The show’s over-the-top premise and shock value humor make it a natural fit for animation, and when MacFarlane’s name was attached to the project, many fans assumed it would go that way. Now, there’s no telling how the story will translate into live-action — or what it will lose in the process.

Dungeon Crawler Carl debuted in October of 2020 when Dinniman self-published the first volume as an ebook and paperback. It gained traction quickly, and reports of a possible adaptation first broke in August of 2024. MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door Production was attached to the project from the start, and just last month the company finally sealed a deal with Peacock. The series will be written by Christopher Yost, and both MacFarlane and Dinniman are onboard as executive producers.

Can ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ Be Done in Live-Action?

Carl and Princess Donut on the cover of the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG rule book.
Carl and Princess Donut on the cover of the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG rule book.

Most of the biggest sci-fi and fantasy shows on TV these days are live-action, and there’s no question that the genre can thrive in this medium. However, Dungeon Crawler Carl can’t simply be filmed at a castle in Ireland with the dragons added later in post-production, or shot on a soundstage that rumbles when the spacecraft makes maneuvers. The series is pretty high-concept — the interior of the planet is completely overtaken by an advanced artificial intelligence which transforms it into a fantasy-style dungeon for an intergalactic reality show competition.

There are parts of this story that will look amazing in live-action, but the amount of CGI and special effects required for just about every scene will mean spreading this production pretty thin. The main characters here are Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, who is given sentience and the ability to talk shortly after the game begins. She alone will drive up the cost of the show, and it’s not as if Donut’s screen time can be minimized to save money — she’s kind of the star here.

Many fans online actually assumed this series would be animated from the beginning, and were surprised when it was announced as live-action. The doubt was so widespread that Dinniman was even asked about this issue in an interview with Variety. The author said “we’re not going to do it if it’s gonna look like absolute s—. And they will do CGI testing on Princess Donut and stuff like that. And that’s all I can say, I think. It’s all gonna hinge on what it looks like.”

Dinniman also brought up MacFarlane and Fuzzy Door’s work on other live-action shows as evidence that they can pull this off. It’s easy to imagine how the Ted franchise might prepare the studio to handle Princess Donut, and The Orville definitely shows their sci-fi chops. Still, that has to be weighed against years of visual spectacle on Family Guy, American Dad, and other animated shows from this studio. Those shows don’t hesitate to take their characters into space, redesign their bodies, or throw them into all-out fights against a giant chicken. That kind of flippant visual gag is what Dungeon Crawler Carl runs on.

‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’s Compounding Live-Action Limitations

the front cover of "Dungeon Crawler Carl' by Matt Dinniman Image via Ace Books

Perhaps the most daunting part of Dungeon Crawler Carl going live-action is that it will only get harder as the series goes on. Without spoiling too much, the “dungeon” and the world around it will only get stranger and require more visual effects as time goes on. Inserting a one-time spectacle is one thing, but within a few seasons many of the main characters will have taken fantasy races, requiring CGI and makeup at all times. They’ll be facing monsters, aliens, and literal gods in fantastical settings that will need to be rendered in CGI whenever they’re on-screen.

Fans online have argued that animation would be cheaper, meaning the show would be more likely to move forward and adapt all of Dinniman’s books without being canceled. However, it’s not just a monetary issue — at a certain point, when most of the things on screen are CGI, shows and movies become harder to watch and stay invested in. We’ve seen some massive flops when CGI is pushed past its capabilities — fans online have raised many comparisons to Ready Player One, for example. There are successes as well, but those have been rare and expensive to make.

If Dungeon Crawler Carl does keep getting renewals to adapt more of Dinniman’s series, it will likely need to make some changes and cuts to the story to stay in budget. That’s the scenario fans really want to avoid. Many online fear that their personal favorite character or set piece will be dropped or changed to save money. Of course, the same could theoretically be true in an animated adaptation.

Whatever Yost, MacFarlane, and the rest of the team bring to the screen, Dinniman’s books will still be there with the full original story, and all the outlandish sights that don’t make it to TV. There are currently eight books in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, available now in print, digital, and audiobook formats. Dinniman intends to conclude the series with two more novels. Peacock has officially ordered the TV adaptation, which is currently in pre-production with no hint of a release date yet.

“When we announced the PCD Forever Tour, we hoped to bring the show to fans across the world,” the group wrote via Instagram on May 4. “After taking an honest look at the North American run, we’ve made the difficult and heartbreaking decision to cancel all but one of the North America dates.”

Us Weekly confirmed at the time that the Pussycat Dolls will still perform at the OUTLOUD Music Festival at WeHo Pride on June 6.

“The LGBTQ+ community has shown us so much love and support throughout our career, and we’re honored to be part of a weekend rooted in joy, pride, music and chosen family,” they continued. “Our U.K. and European dates are still moving forward as planned, and the response has been incredible, with several shows already sold out.”

After the news broke, Us exclusively revealed Scherzinger’s reaction to the canceled concerts.

“Nicole is disappointed,” a source exclusively told Us earlier this month. “She was really excited to get back out there with Ashley and Kimberly to celebrate a new era, but now she feels they didn’t get a chance to showcase what they can do.”

According to the insider, the group was “too ambitious” while planning their first venture since 2009’s Doll Domination Tour.

The highly anticipated Pussycat Dolls reunion has now left fans reeling with all but one date on the U.S. leg of their PCD Forever Tour being canceled. Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt announced in March that a 53-date tour of North America, Europe and the U.K would kick off in June. The shows […]

“They went from not touring for over 15 years to booking big arenas like Madison Square Garden with only one new song to back it,” the source noted. “They overestimated the demand.”

For Scherzinger, the cancellation of select dates on the PCD Forever Tour is not the first time she’s been let down during her career.

“Nicole is trying to look on the bright side because the Dolls are still proceeding with their European dates, which she’s beyond excited about, but it’s hard not to feel defeated,” the insider told Us. “She’s been through this before. Her solo album Her Name Is Nicole was shelved [in 2007], the Dolls also had to cancel their last reunion tour [in 2020] and she has a ton of other music that she never got to put out. It’s been a tough road for Nicole despite her other successes but she’s grateful for the continuous love from across the pond.”

The source added, “Nicole is hopeful the Dolls can figure out something else in the U.S. after people see the show they’re putting together for Europe, which is going to be very special.”

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner cheered on the New York Knicks’ historic victory from courtside at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.

The couple both wore blue-and-orange Knicks T-shirts as they watched the team punch their tickets to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years with a 130-90 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Knicks wiped out the Cavs with four straight wins in the Eastern Conference Finals and will now face either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.

The NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals games had some seriously star-studded crowds this month, as Taylor Swift and her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, were in attendance at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, May 23, to cheer on the Cavs.

Chalamet, 30, and Jenner, 28, have made several appearances courtside at Knicks games this season because the Dune actor is a lifelong fan of the NBA franchise.

“One of my first games, I was 10 years old, was the Denver Nuggets vs. the New York Knicks,” Chalamet revealed on the “7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony” podcast in December 2025. “If you look at the footage … I snuck down with my buddy. We’re on the tunnel exit and you can see the players. You can see a little kid going nuts on the players! That was me! That was a crazy game to be at.”

The 2008 game between the Knicks and Nuggets at New York City’s Madison Square Garden is infamous for a flagrant foul between Knicks guard Mardy Collins and Nuggets guard J. R. Smith that exploded into an all-out brawl between both teams. All ten players on the court were ejected from the game and seven suspensions were ultimately handed out by the NBA.

Meanwhile, Chalamet’s dedication to the Knicks is so strong that he skipped attending the Met Gala with Jenner on May 4 to sit courtside at MSG as his team beat the Philadelphia 76ers, 137-98.

“‘Rock That Body,’ we did it,” Fergie, 51, beamed during the annual awards show. “Black Eyed Peas, ‘Rock That Body,’ American Music Awards 2026, let’s go!”

The “Big Girls Don’t Cry” singer joined former bandmates will.i.am, APL.DE.AP and Taboo on stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Monday, May 25, to accept the Best Throwback Song Award for their 2010 hit “Rock That Body.”

The new AMAs category celebrated classic songs that ruled pop radio, with “Rock That Body” triumphing over 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.”

Prior to Monday’s win, the Black Eyed Peas hyped their American Music Award nomination via Instagram on April 15 by sharing a montage of TikToks set to “Rock That Body.”

“We’re honored to be nominated for the 2026 @amas !! ‘Rock That Body’ up for Best Throwback Song… a song we made all those years ago, still making an impact today,” they wrote.

Fergie was the lead vocalist of the Black Eyed Peas from 2002 to 2018, at which time she stepped away from the group to focus on her solo career.

“Since the beginning of Black Eyed Peas, we’ve always had amazing vocalists that appeared on the mic with us,” will.i.am, 51, told Ahlan at the time. “People like Macy Gray, Esthero, Debi Nova, Fergie. On Elephunk, there were several females that appeared on that album. Obviously, Fergie was the featured female, but on songs like ‘Let’s Get it Started,’ it’s Noelle [Scaggs], and then Fergie, songs like ‘Latin Girls,’ it’s Debi Nova, and ‘Request Line,’ it’s Macy Gray. We’ll always work with good females.”

Summer House’s Jesse Solomon teased that Amanda Batula and West Wilson will both be in the hot seat during the “brutal” season 10 reunion.

“There’s some accountability,” Jesse, 32, exclusively revealed to Us Weekly on the red carpet of the 2026 American Music Music Awards on Monday, May 25. “Obviously it’s brutal … I think there’s a lot of unexpected fights … Watching it on the way here, obviously we cover a lot of the West and Amanda stuff, but there’s a lot of other stuff in the house that people are upset about.”

Jesse teased that there will be a fiery exchange in the three-part reunion between Ben Waddell and Bailey Taylor after they clashed in recent episodes.

“Bailey, she’s a firecracker. I love her the best,” he added.

Of course, much of the drama in Summer House’s season 10 reunion episodes will revolve around Amanda, 34, and West, 31, sparking a romantic relationship. (The duo confirmed they were exploring a “connection” in March, after Amanda and her estranged husband, Kyle Cooke, separated in January. West previously dated Summer House costar Ciara Miller as well.)

Asked about Ciara’s state of mind following her showdown with her former best friend Amanda and ex West, Jesse hinted, “She seems good, all things considered.”

“She’s a really strong woman, and just a great person, and great friend,” he went on. “I’m just trying to be there for her and support her.”

The drama-filled teaser for Summer House’s season 10 reunion included one particularly shocking moment where Jesse broke down in tears over Amanda and West’s scandalous relationship. Jesse admitted to Us that he did not expect “at all” to get so emotional over the friendship drama.

“I think I just hadn’t taken time to grieve the loss of a friend group,” he noted. “When confronted with it, it was really a lot to deal with. I was just emotional all day.”

Jesse continued, “I cried for KJ [Dillard], I cried for Mia [Calabrese], cried for the loss of my friends, obviously.”

Apple TV’s 10-Part Horror Sleeper Hit Officially Changes Genres This Week

Published

Matthew Rhys gripping a bag and staring dully ahead in Widow's Bay

Widow’s Bay premiered on Apple TV last month and has quickly captured everyone’s attention. The series, an inventive blend of horror and comedy, is a sleeper hit in the ratings, despite not being a more flashy sci-fi extravaganza such as Severance, Silo, or For All Mankind. Instead, the 10-episode series is making a name for itself as one of the best shows on television right now. If you need more confirmation of Widow’s Bay‘s genius, maybe a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score will convince you. With five episodes already aired, we thought we knew exactly what to expect from the terrifying, yet hilarious series — but with Episode 6, dropping on May 27, Widow’s Bay is proving yet again that we’re in for a wild ride with an unexpected genre switch-up.

‘Widow’s Bay’ Has Dabbled in Several Horror Genres So Far

If you’ve been tuning into Widow’s Bay already, you’ve been treated to some unique takes on fan-favorite horror tropes. The first episode introduces the town of Widow’s Bay, a picturesque island in New England, which quickly reveals more dangers in store for its inhabitants when a mysterious fog descends. This tribute to classic horror films like The Mist or The Fog is a fantastic way to illustrate that the curse on the town has officially begun to unfold.

Instead of sticking with the mystery of the deadly fog, Widow’s Bay then reveals a horrifying, murderous clown (a la It) that tries to attack our protagonist, Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), while Episode 3 features an uber-creepy sea hag that makes the island even more lethal. When it appears that the townspeople might be having fun at an innocent party hosted by Tom’s assistant Patricia (Kate O’Flynn) in Episode 4, the gathering turns into one of the series’ scariest scenes ever, with attendees put under a mass spell by what turns out to be an evil spellbook. Last week’s episode revolved around Tom undergoing an unhinged experience, taking psychedelic mushrooms to gain some insight into the curse that’s taken over. By the last frame, it’s clear that Widow’s Bay is actually about to change genres when it returns with Episode 6.

‘Widow’s Bay’ Is Making a Major Genre Shift With the Help of a Famous Horror Director

At the end of Episode 5, Tom is having visions of what transpired with his deceased wife. After trying to leave the island while pregnant, she lost her eyesight, became catatonic, and then died. Tom prays aloud for his son to be protected from these malevolent spirits. As the camera zooms into his darkened bedroom, the picture subtly fades to black and white. This fade might have been barely noticeable, but it makes the transition to the past in this week’s episode even more intriguing.

The closing minutes are clearly setting up viewers for what appears to be a Widow’s Bay flashback episode, aptly titled “Our History.” This take on the “period horror” genre, akin to The Witch or The Others, will likely reveal more insight into the island’s history. More background will only deepen the lore surrounding Widow’s Bay, while also allowing for additional frights. Adding further credence to Widow’s Bay‘s genre shift is the fact that Ti West is credited with directing “Our History,” and he’s already no stranger to period horror, having previously helmed the trilogy of X, Pearl, and MaXXXine. He’s also cut his teeth on small-screen horror by directing episodes of shows like Scream, Wayward Pines, and The Exorcist. West has a unique style, but it will blend nicely with Hiro Murai‘s prior direction on episodes of Widow’s Bay.

There are only a few episodes left in Widow’s Bay‘s first season, and viewers still have a lot to learn about the island and the curse that plagues it, but the series embracing a flashback episode and pivoting to a different horror subgenre in the process is only bound to make it more of a must-watch.
