Reacher’s Alan Ritchson Shares Self-Love Post Amid Divorce
Reacher star Alan Ritchson is meditating on the importance of self-love amid his divorce from estranged wife Catherine Ritchson.
“Here’s some post-sauna clarity for ya. Today I want to talk about learning to love yourself and how I think this could be the great antidote to our times and the frustration that many of us feel,” Ritchson, 43, said in a video shared via Instagram on Sunday, September 20. “You know, the world bombards us with so many messages, each day, about how we’re not quite enough, right?”
The actor continued, “If we just bought this thing or if we were not sober we’d be more fun, more relational, we’d be better friends, you know? If we had this or that material thing we’d be worth more to the world and more worthy of love, right? It’s kind of the message that capitalism teaches us and it’s hard in western cultures to get rid of that lie.”
The Ministry of Ungentlemany Warfare star’s inspirational message comes not long after he announced his split from Catherine, 37, after two decades of marriage.
“After 20 years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way,” the pair announced in a joint statement shared via Instagram on September 12. “We grew up together, we built a life and a family together.”
The pair continued at the time, “We are raising three incredible boys, who will always be the center of our world. Nothing can diminish what these years have meant to us — or the love and respect we will always share.”
According to court documents obtained by Us on Monday, September 14, the actor and his estranged wife tried to reconcile just three months after the actor initially filed for divorce in December 2025. According to the docs, the former couple filed a “suspension of the proceedings” three months later as they attempted to salvage their marriage.
A judge agreed to the order and suspended their divorce for six months. The documents stated that Alan and Catherine “may resume living together as husband and wife and their acts.” Per the court, the divorce could proceed if the pair’s reconciliation attempt was ultimately unsuccessful.
On Saturday, the star reminisced on how self-love is the key to breaking dangerous cycles and better showing up for not only oneself but for others.
“I, personally, I grew up in a home where my parents, when my mother would notice that I got a lot of attention effortlessly without trying,” he continued. “As a kid, people would just approach us. ‘Look at him’ and, ‘Oh, he’s so, you know, so cute.’ In my ear, she’d whisper, ‘It’s not all about you.’”
Alan added, “This reduction of myself when I wasn’t even trying to get attention, so you hear that enough times and you start to feel like, ‘I’m not only not worthy of love, but I’m not supposed to be loved.’ And you carry that into adulthood, and I’m sure we all have our own versions of that, whatever that might look like. But what does it look like when we don’t love ourselves, right? We’re constantly escaping into some other thing that ultimately reduces us into a lower vibrational state of ourselves — a lower form of who we’re truly meant to be.”

The star went on to pontificate on the negative consequences of not feeling as if a person is worthy of love — one that perpetuates a vicious cycle of hate and dehumanization.
“One of the nastier consequences is that if we feel like, ‘Well I’m not worthy of love,’ we look outwards and we do see [that] there’s a spectrum of wickedness and goodness in the world. And we see other people who feel like are below us in the spectrum, and if I’m not worthy of love they’re definitely not worthy of love,” he said. “And suddenly we’re in the camp of making monsters of others and we have enemies and we work against them and we stop serving the world the way that we’re called to and then we certainly have a reason to feel like we’re not worthy of love.
He added, “It’s a wicked cycle, but it starts with us saying, ‘Hold on, I’m enough.’ And you’re enough. You’re enough, and to anybody else who needs to hear that — I need to hear that – you’re enough. No matter what you’re going through, you’re enough.”

‘Lanterns’ Creator Officially Reveals His Long-Term Plan for HBO’s Gritty Sci-Fi Detective Series
Editor’s note: The below interview contains minor spoilers for Lanterns Episode 6.
As HBO’s Lanterns continues to progress toward the finale, the series is confirming even more connections to James Gunn‘s wider DCU. While the show starts with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as Earth’s Green Lantern, the situation changes after 2016’s investigation in Rushville leads to an explosive showdown between Hal, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and the Manhunter (Poorna Jagannathan). When John ultimately turns down the chance to wear the ring himself, it opens the door for Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) to become the next Green Lantern — and as Lanterns‘ latest episode reveals, there’s no love lost between the guy who was originally teed up to replace Hal Jordan and the gym teacher who ended up taking the job.
Ahead of the Lanterns premiere, Collider had the opportunity to speak with several members of the show’s cast and creative team, including co-creator Chris Mundy. Over the course of the interview, which you can watch above or read below, Mundy discusses the process of striking the right balance between the grit of True Detective and more fantastical Green Lantern story components, how Lanterns‘ version of Guy Gardner goes a step further than the character fans met in Superman, why John’s spotlight episode almost aired later in the season, his plan for the show’s potential return after Season 1, and more.
COLLIDER: In terms of the overall blend of genres with the show, I know there’s been some early comparisons to True Detective and things like that, but I was interested in hearing how you wanted to strike the balance between those grittier thriller elements and the more humorous and fantastical elements that almost are more emblematic of the Green Lantern story.
CHRIS MUNDY: Yeah, it’s a tricky balance. We’re trying to hopefully do a good enough job that people accept the mash-up of them. It was weird that things would come in, like, obviously we start with that 60 Minutes interview, so suddenly you’re grounding it in Hal, and he’s in the suit, and then you’ve got this weird scene of borderline child abuse, but then Hal and John, and then immediately that car flies off.
So, in some ways, we gave everyone everything in the first five minutes, but then after that we really wanted to slow it down and ground ourselves. It’s like, “Okay, the mystery is going to be based in this town. We’re going to be in Western Nebraska.” We wanted to get to Hal and John’s relationship, people feeling like they’re living inside of it, and they’re living in sort of the dirt and dust of western Nebraska. Once that was the case, then slowly bring in the comic book stuff as you go.
So, even the way we did the construct sort of started small and went bigger. The suit comes back again at the end of Episode 2, but each time we wanted to ground in one, and if we felt confident that we had done a good enough job with that, then add the next layer of the thing.
This is more of a less serious question, but I was interested in hearing whose idea it was to have “Brand New Key” be the song that Hal purposely picks on the jukebox to start a bar fight.
MUNDY: Do you know what’s so funny? It was like we knew we wanted it. We were in three different locations. I was in my office, Damon [Lindelof] was in his office, Tom [King] was in Washington, DC, and we knew we were going to play the gag of the song. I texted the three of them and said, “We should land on a song.” And, like, two seconds later, Damon texted back, “Brand New Key.” And the second you read it, we were like, “Oh yeah, that’s exactly what it is.”
It’s fantastic. Every time it started up again, I had to chuckle to myself. It was great.
MUNDY: Yeah, same. I’ve seen it a million times, and it still makes me laugh.
‘Lanterns’ Creator Wanted To Take Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner “One Step Further” Than James Gunn’s ‘Superman’
“That character, you can play him for as much comedy or as little as you want.”
I did have a chance to pick Damon and Tom’s brains about bringing Guy Gardner into the story, so I thought you would also be a good person to ask about that. How soon did you know you wanted him to be a part of the show, and what did you really want to emphasize about any difference in the character in Lanterns compared to the version that we meet in Superman?
MUNDY: We knew pretty much right away when we were doing the two time periods we wanted to have him in the show at least a little bit, just to explain to the world where we were in time. Hal was gone, and also to explain that we knew the time period. You know what I mean?
And from that, we had a lot of license. That character, you can play him for as much comedy or as little as you want. James [Gunn] had obviously played him for comedy in Superman, and we just felt like it was license to take it one step further, especially since it’s sort of adversarial the first time when he’s talking to John. So, we just sort of went for it and waited to see if we got any notes, and people seemed to like it. And Nathan [Fillion]’s so good that that helps. On the page, they trusted it, in part because I think he’s just so good.
Given that he is the Green Lantern, at least by the 2026 timeline, obviously it raises the question of, “Well, we know Hal and John are in the show, so what happened in those moments in between?” The premiere ends in a way that I think is going to shock and surprise a lot of viewers — it certainly caught me off-guard. Is there any reassurance that you can offer fans that might be confused, maybe a little bit upset by that particular story choice? Because it is a big one, and the ripple effects carry through the rest of the show.
MUNDY: It’s a big one. I don’t know if there’s anything that gives them peace of mind. I will say that it’s something we didn’t take lightly and that it’s something we want to emotionally earn. We did it to deepen our understanding both of John but also of Hal. So, to whatever degree you get peace of mind from it, it’s in service of Hal’s character and in service of John’s character.
Episode 3 is a very character-forward episode in a lot of ways — focusing on John, his backstory, his very complicated relationship with his family, his parents in particular. But given where it appears in the season, it kind of steps away a little bit from the murder mystery that’s going on in Rushville. Did it ever feel like a bit of a risk, storytelling-wise, to do a pivot to more of a character spotlight at that point in the show?
MUNDY: Originally, when we broke the season, that episode always existed. It was fifth, initially. There was a point where we decided that we felt free to pull it up, that we felt confident in the world we’d created in [Episodes] 1 and 2, and that in a way, it was more important to have a deeper understanding of John, and you learn about Hal in that, too. But we felt like the depth of understanding the characters was more important in the [Episode] 3 spot than making sure the story had momentum. But it was a huge discussion. Like I said, it was originally fifth, and it was a ways in before we pulled it up to [Episode] 3.
Chris Mundy Reveals How Many More ‘Lanterns’ Easter Eggs Are on the Way
“You get a hint of him early, and more of him a little bit later, so we felt like that was enough.”
There are quite a couple of name-drops of other Lanterns in the show. We get a Ch’p reference. The Mogo reference, I think, is going to give fans a bit of a chuckle. Were there conversations about including more explicit cameos, or is there anything maybe cooking for the finale that you can tee up? I’m curious as to whether we’re going to see any others.
MUNDY: We talked about it, but I don’t think there was ever… In retrospect, a lot of times there are things in a writers’ room they talk about that they’re like, “Oh, wow,” things that have legs for a long time that you just didn’t end up doing, or even things you wrote that just there was too much tonnage of stuff and you pulled.
So, we talked about it, but we felt like our story was full enough, and we felt like we just wanted to keep burrowing into John and Hal. And we knew we were using Sinestro in the season, so we knew people that were waiting to really feel those kinds of presences, that that was coming. You get a hint of him early, and more of him a little bit later, so we felt like that was enough. And the other, it wasn’t going to serve the drive; it was going to take away from the emotional stuff that we were doing with Hal and John.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t wrap up by asking about the longer plan for these characters. Obviously, John is going to make an appearance in another DC project, but if there was an opportunity to do more Lanterns, what’s the general feeling behind continuing the show?
MUNDY: The general feeling is if people are interested, knock on wood, if people like the show, and there seems to be enough interest, we would love to do it. Honestly. I think you want to end in a place where you feel like this was a fall season, but emotionally, there’s so much more to keep going with. So, with a little bit of luck, there’ll be more.

They are sort of interactive because as you watch, you try to figure out the mystery along with the detective character, whether it’s an actual detective or an amateur one. There are usually twists and turns whereby you think one person is the perpetrator one episode, but you’re eyeing someone else the next.
Netflix has a nice selection of detective shows, and some of them are true masterpieces from start to finish. Some add a level of humor while others are much darker. One of the best-ever is even based on real-life killers and the formation of the FBI unit that began to track people who fit the newly minted term serial killers. There’s something for everyone, including shows that only ran a single season and ones that ran multiple, some of which have plans to continue.
‘The Residence’ (2025)
The Residence is best described as Knives Out for the small screen with a gender-swapped Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Uzo Aduba plays Cordelia Cupp, an eccentric consultant who is called in to help the local police when they are dealing with seemingly unsolvable, often high-profile cases. It doesn’t get much more high-profile than a murder in the White House, and when she arrives on the scene during a state dinner with the Australian prime minister, it’s time to get to work.
The Shonda Rhimes mystery comedy drama is a single-season mystery TV masterpiece. It’s as funny as it is gripping, with every episode told from the perspective of a different person as Cordelia interviews them about what they did that night and what they might know. It’s fun, exciting, and keeps you guessing. It’s a shame The Residence was canceled after just one season since the premise would have worked with a new case and characters, Cordelia returning to do her quirky thing once again.
‘Bodies’ (2023)
Imagine the same dead body showing up four times across four different time periods, starting in the late 1800s right up to the future 2053. There’s something strange going on, and the four investigations eventually come together in Bodies to explain a weird link across space and time.
The British sci-fi mystery thriller Bodies, based on the Si Spencer graphic novel of the same name, stars Adolescence‘s Stephen Graham and Unorthodox‘s Shira Haas. It will leave you stunned through its gripping eight episodes. If you’re looking for a Netflix detective show you can watch in one sitting, Bodies is a good choice.
‘Mindhunter’ (2017–2019)
Arguably one of Netflix’s best detective series, perhaps even one of its best original shows overall, Mindhunter dives into the minds of serial killers. But this is at a time before they were known as such. Special agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), based on real-life agents, begin to realize that there’s a strange psychological compulsion with these “repeat killers.” The pair come to be part of the original formation of the Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) of the FBI, examining the ritualistic motivations behind these vicious killers, who appear to be driven by something more than just a desire to kill.
Mindhunter is based on not only a real-life story but also features actors playing real-life serial killers from history. Conversations include dialogue that is pulled from actual transcripts. It’s one of the most chilling, riveting psychological crime thrillers, a thriller show with no weak episodes. Mindhunter is a perfect fit for those who love exploring the minds of killers, not just seeing an investigation into who they are.
‘Dept. Q’ (2025–Present)
Set to return for a second season, Dept. Q is a British crime thriller based on the Jussi Adler-Olsen book series Department Q. Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) is a police officer who returns to work after a devastating incident that left him wounded, his colleague paralyzed, and another officer killed. The not-well-liked asocial officer is assigned to head up a new unit focusing on cold cases. In Season 1, they tackle the case of the missing Crown Office solicitor Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie).
Dept. Q is as much about dealing with trauma and moving forward as it is about the cases. Morck is the shining star — a sarcastic, arrogant personality who is often butting heads with others. There’s a lot of potential for where the plot can go in Season 2 of this exciting and underrated detective show.
‘Unbelievable’ (2019)
When a woman claims she was raped, the tables are bizarrely turned on her, and she is instead accused of falsely reporting a crime. But as other similar attacks pop up around town, two female detectives, Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) start to look deeper into her case.
What’s most shocking about Unbelievable is that it should be believable because it’s based on a true story: the serial rape cases that took place in Washington and Colorado from 2008 through 2011. The premise in this flawless miniseries is heartbreaking with a powerful message about victim blaming or outright not believing women (or men) who come forward with such stories, and about survivor trauma.
‘His & Hers’ (2026)
One of the twistiest detective shows you will have seen in a long time, His & Hers will keep you guessing right up to the literal end of the show. The mystery thriller takes place in a small town where detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) is investigating the murder of a local woman. His estranged wife Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson), a news reporter, suddenly comes back to report on it. Both have a connection to the victim, and it seems this small town, and this couple, hold a lot of secrets.
The series is a tightly told story though six episodes that will have you convinced you know the truth one minute, then questioning if maybe you’re wrong the next. As new characters come into the mix, you look at each one side-eyed. But trust me, you won’t see the shocking twist coming.
‘Wednesday’ (2022–Present)
Wednesday isn’t technically a detective show. But every season of the supernatural mystery comedy contains at least one case that involves detectives investigating. And it’s usually prompted by Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) having a vision of something horrible that is about to happen. With the police often of no valuable help, it’s up to Wednesday to try and put together the pieces and save someone from almost certain death before it’s too late.
A non-traditional coming-of-age tale about teens attending a private school for outcasts and monsters, each with special powers, Wednesday is one of Netflix’s most watched shows ever, and for good reason. The masterpiece fantasy show is bitingly funny, Wednesday’s sarcasm and brooding personality a perfect contrast to the others around her. Kids will love it just as much as adults.
‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ (2024–Present)
Emma Myers stars in the British mystery thriller A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder as Pippa “Pip” Fitz-Amobi, a teenager who decides to take matters into her own hands when she feels as though the police aren’t doing enough to handle the cases in her small town. While doing her studies and starting her own podcast, she first looks into the murder of a young fellow student. In Season 2, she investigates the disappearance of her best friend’s brother.
Set for a third and final season to stream in 2027, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is like a modern-day Nancy Drew story, a perfect watch for teens of the same age as Pip. It’s a coming-of-age tale with a classic detective story feel and a compartmentalized story for each season. Yet it remains a Netflix mystery show no one ever talks about.
‘Collateral’ (2018)
A forgotten hidden Netflix gem, Collateral technically aired on BBC in the U.K. first before arriving to Netflix, which co-financed the series and released it internationally a month later. Told in four parts, the British drama follows DI Kip Glaspie (Carey Mulligan) who is looking into the shooting of a pizza delivery person. But as she investigates, Kip realizes this story runs far deeper than she ever imagined.
The story in Collateral explores topical issues like racism and immigration and the mistreatment of individuals by both other citizens and agencies that vow to protect residents. Collateral is heavy-handed on social commentary, but there’s no denying its message, which is a powerful one about unity, acceptance, and judgment.
‘Murderville’ (2022)
Want something funnier? Murderville is a murder mystery that combines improvised comedy with typical tropes and celebrities who are willing to dive right into the silliness of it all. Will Arnett leads each episode as Terry Seattle, a senior detective working with a new rookie detective in each episode, assigned to him by his ex-wife and chief of police Rhonda (Haneefah Wood). The celebrities who play these rookies come along for the ride, but the twist is that they don’t have a script. Both are ad-libbing as they go, to hilarious results.
The seven-episode show (there was also a Christmas special) features celebrities like Conan O’Brien, Kumail Nanjiani, Ken Jeong, Jason Bateman, and Maya Rudolph, each bringing their own comedic style to the on-the-fly narrative. It’s totally silly fun, and while there are awkward moments of silence where improv skills aren’t as strong, each episode will make you laugh. Arnett is often able to fill in the gaps.
HBO has never been particularly interested in making television that stays in one lane. After all, the network is responsible for prestige dramas, bleak thrillers, sprawling fantasies, and some of the most miserable families ever put on screen. However, it also knows how to make a show that’s just an absolute hoot to watch. Sometimes that means rapid-fire comedy and outrageous situations, while other times it comes from spectacular action or a cast that’s simply having the time of its life.
As such, these are the shows that bring something different to the table, whether it’s a period drama, a vigilante tale, or a political comedy. At the end of the day, they’re funny, energetic, wildly entertaining, and most importantly, the kind of shows that make it very easy to hit “next episode.” So, if you find yourself sitting in a little funk, do yourself a favor and click on one of these.

‘Warrior’ (2019–2023)
Set in San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 19th century, Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji) is a martial arts prodigy who arrives from China in search for his missing sister. Unfortunately, his plans go devastatingly awry when he’s suddenly sold to one of Chinatown’s most powerful tongs, forcing him to navigate through a violent struggle for power in a town filled with rival gangs and corrupt politicians.
Combining brutal action with intense drama and a surprisingly playful sense of humor, it’s no wonder that Warrior is a huge blast to watch. The fight scenes are, of course, a major draw, and yet the show’s willingness to bounce between gang warfare, institutional corruption, and community dysfunction is what keeps it from becoming one-note. Plus, this show is based on an original concept by Bruce Lee himself—a fact that naturally brings an irreverent energy to the project’s core.

‘Peacemaker’ (2022–2025)
After surviving the events of The Suicide Squad, Chris Smith (John Cena)—better known as the brutal vigilante Peacemaker—is forced to join a black-ops team on the mysterious Project Butterfly. Here, he and his mismatched team of operatives must stop a mysterious alien invasion that soon becomes a threat far stranger than anything they expected.
In true James Gunn fashion, Peacemaker finds its magic by turning a ridiculous superhero into the center of a surprisingly heartfelt comedy—all without sanding away everything that makes him awful. Leaning into Peacemaker’s macho posturing, bizarre musical tastes, and dysfunctional relationships is what helps create endless opportunities for comedy. It’s also a plus that the rest of the team is a collection of equally entertaining foils. Just look at the vibrancy (and commitment) to the opening title dance sequence. That alone highlights the tone of this show.

‘Our Flag Means Death’ (2022–2023)
In the 18th century, wealthy aristocrat Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) grows tired of his privileged (and very cushy) life. As a result, he abandons everything and decides to become a pirate even though he has absolutely no idea what to do. But now, after assembling an equally unconventional crew for his ship, Stede must quickly figure things out, especially as he soon crosses paths with the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Taiki Waititi).
There’s no doubt that the show’s greatest strength is the sheer ridiculousness of its pirate world. Waititi’s Blackbeard is less a fearsome pirate than a bored celebrity in need of a new direction, while Darby’s Stede approaches piracy with the enthusiasm of someone organizing a particularly ill-advised dinner party. The result is a warm, absurd comedy where swashbuckling, disastrous schemes, and surprisingly sincere conversations about identity and love can all exist in the same episode. If only Our Flag Means Death didn’t fall victim to the cancelation curse.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ (2000–2024)
As a fictionalized version of himself, Larry David is a successful television writer and producer whose life would probably be much easier if he simply stopped arguing with everyone. Instead, Larry has a remarkable talent for turning minor social annoyances into full-blown disasters, whether he’s dealing with friends, family, celebrities, or complete strangers.

The Gemstone family is a wealthy and wildly dysfunctional evangelical dynasty led by televangelist Eli Gemstone (John Goodman). But just as the family attempts to expand their empire, various scandals, rivalries, criminals, and schemes threaten to tear the Gemstones apart—especially as Eli’s spoiled adult children bask in their lavish lifestyles and desires.
Few HBO comedies commit to a joke as completely as The Righteous Gemstones, with every character leaning right into the gloriously obnoxious arrogance of the titular family. Better still, the show has somehow mastered the act of escalation as a petty argument can somehow lead to kidnappings, shootouts, or other criminal conspiracies. Loud, outrageous, and littered with iconic musical numbers, The Righteous Gemstones is a sensory overload. But at least underneath all the religious hypocrisy and greed lies a tale of a complicated family that genuinely loves one another.

‘Hacks’ (2021–2026)
As legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) becomes in desperate need of a freshened-up act, she’s paired up with young comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), whose career has stalled after a controversial tweet. The two initially have almost nothing in common, but their professional relationship gradually develops into a complicated friendship as they push, frustrate, and occasionally sabotage one another.
There’s no better core to a comedy than a story of two wildly different personalities slowly realizing that they might actually need each other. Of course, this is perfectly executed thanks to Smart and Einbinder’s chemistry, whose constant bickering becomes ridiculously entertaining—especially when it’s balanced by pure moments of vulnerability. Laced with ruthless one-liners and hilarious cameos, Hacks has easily become one of the best modern comedies of the last few years. It’s sharp without becoming exhausting, and it really knows when to let a joke land through an awkward silence or an absurd situation.

‘Veep’ (2012–2019)
As former senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) becomes Vice President of the United States, she quickly discovers that occupying one of the most powerful positions in the country doesn’t mean she actually gets to make any decisions. Surrounded by a staff of ambitious, insecure, and frequently incompetent political operatives, Selina spends her days navigating rival politicians, public scandals, diplomatic disasters, and her own increasingly desperate attempt to advance her career.

Louis-Dreyfus gives Selina an extraordinary combination of confidence and panic, while the rest of the supporting cast make every conversation feel like it could descend into chaos at any moment. Veep is cynical, fast, relentlessly profane, and packed with enough memorable zingers to make even the most mundane crisis hilarious. Think of this as one of HBO’s most timeless shows, especially with it bizarrely starting to emulate our current reality.

Ed Sheeran’s cousin is publicly condemning his famous family member amid the controversy surrounding the decision to unceremoniously remove Macklemore from the singer’s Loop Tour for his unapologetic support of the Palestinian people.
“Finally it’s all coming out! I’m ashamed of my Cousin Ed,” the singer’s cousin, Jethro Sheeran, wrote via Instagram on Thursday, September 17. “Finally the world and all his fans see through him. He’s not a good person, I don’t like his music so I can’t say he’s even a good artist.”
Jethro continued, “He’s honestly a selfish individual with malicious, cunning ways. ‘He kills you with kindness’ (His Words) I’m his first blood cousin and he screwed me over, made fun of my mental health and mental health in general.”
Jethro, a British musician known professionally as Alonestar, is the son of John Sheeran, Ed’s father’s brother. While Alexander Skarsgård might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of Hollywood action stars (though perhaps he is after The Northman), if you’re looking for something full of adventure and excitement, then look to Tubi for one of his most underrated blockbusters. It’s been a decade since The Legend of Tarzan hit theaters, but the film is currently making waves on the free-to-stream platform — and it’s about time it’s recognized for its contribution to the character’s 100+ year history.
‘The Legend of Tarzan’ Is the Furthest Thing From the Sanitized Disney Movie
A decade ago, riding high off his success with the last few Harry Potter films, director David Yates attempted a bold re-imagining of one of modern literature’s most famous adventure heroes. The Legend of Tarzan picks up with the former “King of the Apes” years after he has left the African jungle and returned to high British society. But when Tarzan, now known by his real name of John Clayton III, returns to the Congo, he does so seeking to discover the horrors of the slave trade propagated by Captain Léon Rom (Christoph Waltz) — a real historical figure re-imagined for this 19th-century tale. Things go haywire when John’s wife, Jane (Margot Robbie), is kidnapped, and he must once more return to his jungle roots to stop the madman from his sinister activities. You can only imagine the sorts of jungle-fueled action spectacles that ensue, from tribal battles to deep-forest hunts to armies of apes and mercenaries going to war. It’s the sort of adventure epic that would make Edgar Rice Burroughs — the same man who also penned the John Carter novels — proud.
The Legend of Tarzan was largely panned during its initial release, but there’s a fun action movie buried in there. Skarsgård plays the adventurer with a sober restraint, not going full Tarzan until the moment the plot demands it, and offering a more complex and conflicted portrayal of the hero torn between two distinct (and different) worlds. For those only familiar with the Disney version, this Tarzan pulls more from Burroughs’ pulpy adventure novels than it does the House of Mouse, using the character’s cultural popularity to tell an enjoyable adventure tale that’s unlike what Hollywood makes these days. We cannot stress enough how different The Legend of Tarzan is in every respect from Disney’s Tarzan — which is still great on its own, but perhaps not as reverent toward the source material as this live-action take. Not only is the 2016 blockbuster an earnest re-imagining of Burroughs’ material, but it reminds us that there is so much more psychological depth to Tarzan and his multifaceted world than just the typical chest-beating and swinging through the trees. It’s no wonder that Tubi audiences have pushed The Legend of Tarzan into its high-trending collection.
With an Excellent Cast and Stunning Visuals, ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ Is an Enjoyable Movie Night Blockbuster
Aside from Skarsgård, Robbie, and Waltz, The Legend of Tarzan boasts a fine cast that also includes Samuel L. Jackson as historical figure George Washington Williams, a veteran of the American Civil War and Indian Wars who aids the titular hero in his African quest, and Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga, the leader of the fictional city of Opar. With these stars, Yates was able to craft a feature that echoes the pulp adventures of old, with brilliant visuals and excellent battle sequences that will stun audiences years later. Whether you’re familiar with Burroughs’ original novels or a newcomer who has only ever experienced the Disney take on the cultural icon, The Legend of Tarzan leaves no one behind as it meditates on the circumstances that made John Clayton into Tarzan as he learns to embrace all sides of him.
Although it has been forgotten by most after a decade of franchise-focused blockbusters and poor remakes and sequels, The Legend of Tarzan deserves more respect than critics gave it at the time. It may not be a perfect Tarzan adaptation, but it’s a lot closer to the source than most — and it’s no wonder it continues to find streaming success all these years later. It’s also just loads of fun for anyone looking for an adventure film a little bit outside the usual action box.
