Star Trek: Voyager had plenty of special effects, but arguably none were more impressive than when the ship landed on a planet in the Season 2 premiere episode “The Thirty-Sevens.” This was a first for the franchise, bringing to life one of Gene Roddenberry’s ideas that he had previously considered too expensive to show onscreen. However, this effect was almost a disappointment thanks to behind-the-scenes production issues, including improperly designed landing struts and a CGI model that was just too small.
This particular Voyager special effect was one the team had been dreaming of for a long time. Franchise graphic designer Michael Okuda previously recommended to exec producer Rick Berman that their ship should be able to land as a way to distinguish it from what came before.

Accordingly, Rick Sternbach had developed several possible ship designs with landing capability, and he ensured that the finished design featured small hatches on the bottom hull to house landing equipment. It was only after designing those struts, however, that producers realized that the ship’s “legs” looked far too thin to support its body.
The shot of Voyager landing on a planet in “The 37’s” was meant to be a big, show-stopping special effect, and producers were understandably concerned that viewers would be disappointed if it looked like the ship always skipped leg day. In the grand tradition of television, they decided to fix this problem in post-production.

They fixed it by placing rock outcroppings and other ground features strategically around Voyager as it landed. Go back and watch the episode, and you’ll see how they effectively obscured audiences’ view of those teeny landing struts.
However, that wasn’t the only problem with Voyager’s fancy special effect. The show’s digital artists had accidentally made the CGI model of the ship too tiny. This annoyed visual effects supervisor Ronald B. Moore (not to be confused with Trek writer and Battlestar Galactica reboot showrunner Ronald D. Moore), who was disappointed by the landing effect because “the scale of the Voyager on the ground was incorrect.” However, he didn’t feel that audiences would necessarily notice “because there’s nothing really to relate it to; the people are in the foreground, the ship’s in the background, and we kinda kept it that way.”

For longtime Star Trek fans, this Voyager moment was more than just another special effect; it was also the realization of a decades-old dream that began with Gene Roddenberry. The franchise creator had originally dreamed of having the Enterprise regularly land on planets in The Original Series, but he soon realized just how expensive it would be to have the ship land somewhere new each week. This is how the transporter was born, as it allowed Captain Kirk and his erstwhile crew to quickly visit somewhere new and then head back to the ship via a much cheaper “beam me up” special effect.
Voyager’s producers came to the same conclusion that Roddenberry did, which is why the show mostly stuck to the transporter special effect rather than constantly having the ship land. Nonetheless, it landed several more times after “The Thirty-Sevens,” and producers had a much easier time bringing this ambitious effect to life on their subsequent attempts.

They did so despite the ship’s CGI model being too small, which arguably proves that size really doesn’t matter in the 24th century. We wouldn’t recommend telling that to Captain Janeway about her morning coffee cup sizes, though, unless you want her to kill you quicker than she killed Tuvix!

Murdaugh’s story has been told in projects such as Hulu’s 2025 limited series “Murdaugh: Death in the Family.”
While many famous faces have made a name for themselves on their own, some have surprising familial connections to one another.
Beanie Feldstein, who rose to fame after starring in 2019’s Booksmart, is the younger sister of Jonah Hill and has frequently gushed over their sibling bond. She couldn’t help but rave about her older brother, who even got a tattoo of her name amid her Great White Way debut in Hello, Dolly.
“Oh, my God, I mean, he’s my best friend in the world, so I’m always excited for him,” Feldstein told Us Weekly and other reporters in January 2020.
The acting siblings are hardly the only celebrities with surprising connections. Legendary Today meteorologist Al Roker shares common ancestors with Lenny Kravitz, which they discussed during a September 2011 appearance on the morning show. Another Today anchor, Dylan Dreyer, revealed that she has a familial connection to influencer Alix Earle in May 2026.

The fantasy genre is a fan-favorite and a crucial part of cinematic history. Dating back to the first-ever fantasy movies that came out throughout the 1910s and ’20s, the genre has evolved, experiencing several milestones throughout the subsequent one hundred years of cinema. Among the greatest highlights are 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, 1946’s It’s a Wonderful Life, 1987’s The Princess Bride, and 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, to name just a few.
In the new millennium, the fantasy genre experienced a boom after being dormant for most of the ’90s, and by the middle of the decade, the genre had come back to life with a vengeance thanks to the rise of franchises and a newfound appreciation for classic tales of heroism and magic. Twenty years ago, it saw one of its most successful years in recent memory through a slew of memorable movies, some of which have become outright masterpieces. These are the best fantasy movies to come out in 2006, a collection of truly impressive efforts that have only gotten better with age.
The second adaptation of the 1952 eponymous novel by E. B. White, Gary Winick‘s Charlotte’s Web stars an ensemble led by a then-twelve-year-old Dakota Fanning. The film follows the piglet Wilbur (Dominic Scott Kay), who learns he will eventually end up at the farmer’s dinner table. Together with the wise spider Charlotte (Julia Roberts), Wilbur hatches a plan to avoid being turned into bacon.
It might not be as great as the now-iconic 1973 animated version, but this take on Charlotte’s Web maintains all the delightful charm of the source material without losing an ounce of its poignancy. At its core, it’s a tale about the nature of life and how friendship and complicity can make even the darkest futures seem more hopeful. The ensemble of voice talent alone is worth a watch (we have Robert Redford as a horse, for crying out loud!), but Charlotte’s Web is also a worthwhile family adventure that has only gotten better with age.
Darren Aronofsky is a very love-him-or-hate-him kind of filmmaker, and The Fountain might be his most misunderstood effort. The 2006 science fantasy romance stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in a love tale that spans millennia. The main narrative centers on three different stories: a 16th-century conquistador goes on a quest to find a source of immortality to save his dying queen; in the present day, a scientist attempts to cure his wife’s cancer; and in the twenty-sixth century, an astronaut embarks on an interstellar journey.
The Fountain balances genres, themes, timelines, and narratives to produce a meditative and poignant yet admittedly uneven fantasy. Visually, the film is a feast, with Aronofsky favoring style like never before. Thematically, it really goes for it, covering everything from metaphysics to existentialism in an exploration of the enduring, life-altering nature of love. Jackman is perfectly committed as the lead, while Weisz is outright ethereal as his muse. Like many of Aronofsky’s movies, The Fountain‘s reach exceeds its grasp, but those willing to surrender to its distinct charms are in for a one-of-a-kind ride.
Few, if any, movies are as ambitious as The Fall. Shot over four years in a whopping 24 countries, Tarsem Singh‘s magnum opus stars Lee Pace as stuntman Roy Walker, who is hospitalized after a stunt gone wrong leaves him paraplegic, potentially for good. In the hospital, he meets young Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) and begins telling her a fantastic tale about a group of heroes seeking revenge against an evil ruler.
The Fall is among the most sprawling and sumptuous movies ever made. It is literally the definition of “ambitious,” a daring tale that perfectly encapsulates the unique power that cinema can have as an expression of singular artistic merit. The narrative is admittedly flawed, and it often threatens to crumble under the weight of its own impulses, but the visuals are so lush that it’s hard to fault it. The Fall is a film that must truly be seen to be believed, a spectacularly unique effort from one of cinema’s boldest and most uncompromising auteurs.
The 2006 fantasy rom-com Stranger Than Fiction might be Will Ferrell‘s most underappreciated effort of the 2000s. The actor plays Harold Crick, a quiet and introverted accountant who, one day out of nowhere, begins hearing a voice narrating his day-to-day, revealing that he will soon be dying. Attempting to retake control of his narrative, Harold begins a journey of self-discovery. Meanwhile, the author, neurotic recluse Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson), struggles to finish her story.
Quirky and witty, Stranger Than Fiction is a clever twist on the classic rom-com formula. Ferrell shines against type as a square of an accountant who wasted much of his life in mindless routine. The ensemble cast — Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, Dustin Hoffman — is also stellar, particularly Thompson, who delivers one of her most delightfully unhinged performances. Stranger Than Fiction is a gem of 2000s cinema, a biting and strangely melancholic curio that shines a light on the importance of taking chances and how everyday, seemingly random choices can and eventually do shape our lives in the long term.
In 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl brought the swashbuckling genre back to life. Three years later, the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, delivered yet another adventure of whimsical intensity in the high seas. The plot sees Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) attempting to escape from a deal he made with the wicked Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). Meanwhile, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) embarks on a quest to free his father from Jones’ servitude, while Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) tries to save herself and Will from prison for helping Jack during their first adventure.
Bigger and bolder than the first movie, Dead Man’s Chest has aged beautifully and is now widely considered a triumph of blockbuster filmmaking. The plot is convoluted, and the main trio of performances is a tad less impressive than the first time around. However, the film soars on the strength of Nighy’s transformative, Oscar-worthy portrayal of Davy Jones, quite possibly the best Disney live-action villain in modern cinema. The VFX are also jaw-dropping, with Jones standing as one of the most impressive and fully-realized CGI creations in the medium.
As the follow-up to his generation-defining soft sci-fi masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry chose the fantasy romance The Science of Sleep. Mexican icon Gael García Bernal stars as Stéphane, a young man reeling from the death of his father while living in Paris. Soon after starting a new job, Stéphane’s extremely vivid dreams begin messing with his real life and interfere with his courtship of his next-door neighbor, Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg).
If any movie has ever captured the strikingly beautiful and chaotic nature of dreams, it’s The Science of Sleep. Make no mistake, this remarkable film is messy, but it’s very much by design. Powered by a game García Bernal, this gem is a lovely exploration of romance and the quirks that make every individual unique. Here, each of us exists in a little world of our own, and sometimes, it spills out into reality, but that’s exactly what makes life worth living. Unfortunately, The Science of Sleep suffered from being constantly compared to Eternal Sunshine. However, it’s a terrific movie that deserves far more attention from current audiences.
Pan’s Labyrinth finds director Guillermo del Toro in full command of his craft. Set in Francoist Spain, the film follows young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who moves in with her pregnant mother to the countryside at the best of her new stepfather, the sadistic Captain Vidal (Sergi López). There, Ofelia stumbles upon a labyrinth where she meets a faun (Doug Jones) who reveals her backstory as the princess of a magical realm. If she wants to return there, Ofelia must pass three trials.
Widely considered del Toro’s magnum opus, Pan’s Labyrinth is a beautiful examination of how fantasy can help us cope with the cruel realities of life. The director does not pull any punches in depicting the haunting allure of his dark fantasy world, with incredible creatures and an eerie, striking production design. The highlight is, of course, the Pale Man, whose six-minute sequence is arguably the crowning jewel of del Toro’s impressive career. However, it’s all in service of a poignant tale about the power of imagination, and how it might very well be our strongest tool to thrive in this ruthless, unforgiving world.

If there’s one piece every stylish woman keeps on repeat, it’s a breezy white blouse — and Melanie Griffith just proved why. It’s the kind of staple that instantly makes an outfit feel more elevated, even when everything else is simple. The best part is you can recreate her look — no big spend required.
Spotted on May 7 in Los Angeles, Griffith paired the airy blouse with wide-leg jeans that skimmed the body without clinging and created that easy, draped silhouette. She added heeled loafers for structure, then finished the look with oversized sunglasses and a slouchy shoulder bag. While her exact style is likely designer, we found a $15 version that captures the same effortless feel for much less.
Get the Amazon Essentials Georgette Relaxed-Fit Shirt for just $15 at Amazon! Please note, prices are accurate at the date of publication, May 13, 2026, but are subject to change.
The Amazon Essentials Georgette Relaxed-Fit Shirt delivers that same easy, draped effect that made Griffith’s outfit feel so effortless. Crafted from lightweight georgette with a matte finish and a satin-like interior, it skims the body instead of clinging for that airy, elevated look. The relaxed fit, back yoke with a box pleat and shirttail hem all work together to create a fluid, slightly oversized silhouette that always reads more expensive than it is.
Classic details like a button-front closure, shirt collar and patch pockets add just enough structure to keep it polished without taking away from the laid-back feel. It’s the kind of piece that instantly pulls an outfit together — whether you’re styling it casually or dressing it up. It comes in a cream shade that closely mirrors Griffith’s, along with other easy-to-style options like black and pink. Sizes range from XS to XXL, making it accessible for a wide range of shoppers.
Shoppers are already on board. One “really impressed” buyer raved that the fabric is “soft and flows nicely,” while another shared that it looks “expensive” and is “versatile” enough to pair with anything already in their closet. That combination of comfort, polish and versatility is exactly what makes a piece like this so wearable.
Style it the same way Griffith did with wide-leg jeans and loafers for an effortless everyday uniform, or pair it with trousers, skirts or even denim shorts for a more relaxed take. You can also layer it under a blazer or wear it open over a tank for added versatility. However you style it, it’s one of those pieces that makes getting dressed feel easy — and look polished.

IT: Welcome to Derry was one of the best and most surprising TV shows of 2025. Based on Stephen King‘s novel IT, Andy Muschietti‘s HBO Max series could have been an unnecessary cash grab coasting on past success, but it quickly revealed itself as much more. The series took a deep dive into the mythology of Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), adding new and unexpected layers to a familiar character.
Despite HBO not yet giving the greenlight to a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, the show’s future is already taking shape, with new additions to the writing team reportedly announced. Among them are two people who could potentially shake things up for Derry, Maine, in a major genre shift for the series.
The best part of Muschietti’s IT films is Skarsgård’s performance as the entity’s killer clown form, but the actor built on what had impressed audiences in the feature films and turned it up to wild new heights in IT: Welcome to Derry. However, the HBO Max series showed great restraint, keeping Pennywise mostly hidden until the final three episodes. When it finally does show up, the clown is more violent than ever, making his appearance count. Before that point, the anticipation builds as IT: Welcome to Derry focuses on a new iteration of the Losers’ Club.
As the entity appears in various other forms throughout IT: Welcome to Derry, Season 1’s plot digs deeper into its background and powers. One flashback, told by Rose (Kimberly Guerrero), reveals that the entity is an alien who crash-landed on Earth. The inhabitants of Derry were able to fight it by crafting a dagger made of the star it came from. At the end of Season 1, after the U.S. military purposely releases the fear-inducing entity to control civilians, the kids battle Pennywise with the dagger.
While a second season hasn’t yet been confirmed for IT: Welcome to Derry, we can speculate about the future direction of the show based on certain clues that have already been dropped. While Season 1 took place in 1962, the second and third seasons will likely jump backwards in time by 27-year intervals to 1935 and 1908, the points when Pennywise previously emerged in Derry to wreak bloody havoc.
Skarsgård will also likely return alongside a new cast of characters for Pennywise to terrorize, but according to reports, some new writers have been added to the mix, including Jessica Mecklenburg, who worked on Stranger Things as a writer and producer, The Penguin‘s John McCutcheon, who penned the brilliant episode “Cent’Anni,” and Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. If you’re not familiar with those names, you probably know their work as the creators of Netflix’s sci-fi time-travel series Dark.
Dark first debuted on Netflix in 2017. The story begins in the present day, where a child has gone missing from the town of Winden, Germany. For the locals, it’s a moment that shares eerie similarities with other disappearances. Dark takes a time-travel template and makes it feel fresh and authentic, exploring generations of characters within a unique premise. It also uses the sci-fi genre to tell unpredictable stories across timelines about trauma and the inability to escape one’s fate. Sound familiar?
The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry examines grief and trauma, but it’s also jumping back in time, from 1989 in Muschietti’s first film to 1962. That’s not simply the convenience of a prequel; in a game-changing twist, Pennywise reveals that it can move forward and backward in time, and already knows how and when it will die. Although the entity is defeated in 1962, it can travel back 27 years to find the ancestors of those who will kill it in the future. If they’re destroyed, its death can be averted.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 has the potential to move beyond pure horror to a sci-fi bent. What could be a jump-the-shark moment in the wrong hands becomes a logical next step for the series, especially with the geniuses behind Dark on board.
Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet may look stronger than ever in public these days, but insiders claim their relationship quietly survived major tension behind the scenes.
From jealousy issues to disagreements about personal space, the couple reportedly faced serious friction during the earlier stages of their romance.
Now, sources say the pair have finally found balance as engagement rumors continue heating up.

Although Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about celebrity couples, insiders claim things were not always smooth between them.
According to sources who spoke to the Daily Mail, Jenner initially struggled with Chalamet’s independent lifestyle and demanding career schedule.
“Kylie has learned what the secret is to her and Timothée’s three-year relationship,” one insider explained. “She now lets him do his own thing. That was something she was uneasy with when they first started getting serious. That caused friction between them.”
The source claimed Chalamet eventually became direct about his frustrations and the amount of time he needed for himself.
“She was making him feel claustrophobic,” the insider alleged. “She wanted to be around him all the time. That wasn’t working for him. He’s a person who needs his space and she wasn’t giving it to him.”
The source continued, “He made no bones finally telling her about it.”
Despite the tension, insiders insisted the actor never lost feelings for Jenner.
They shared, “While he loves her, he needs his space. She totally gets it now and there are no more trust issues. They’re in a great place. Their relationship is more solid than it’s ever been.”

The couple reportedly experienced their most difficult period toward the end of 2025 as Chalamet’s schedule became increasingly packed.
At the time, the actor was filming “Dune: Part Three” overseas while also promoting his sports drama “Marty Supreme.”
Sources claimed the long distance and constant travel reportedly intensified issues already building in the relationship.
There were even reports last October claiming Chalamet nearly walked away from the romance due to disagreements surrounding marriage and Jenner’s hopes for him to settle down sooner.
Fuel was added to the speculation after Chalamet appeared distant while discussing Jenner during a Vogue interview in December 2025.
“I just don’t have anything to say,” he told the magazine at the time.
However, the relationship appeared to rebound only weeks later.
At the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, Chalamet publicly thanked his “partner of three years” during his acceptance speech after winning Best Actor for “Marty Supreme.”
He also told Jenner, “I love you,” in front of the audience, signaling a major shift from his earlier reluctance to discuss the relationship publicly.

Insiders also claimed Kylie Jenner eventually realized that keeping parts of the relationship private helped ease some of the tension between them.
Unlike previous romances that unfolded heavily online and on television, Jenner reportedly became far more protective of her relationship with Chalamet.
Another insider previously told the Daily Mail that the actor “didn’t ever want to be a prop” in their relationship and “wants to avoid falling into the trap of being known simply for who he is dating.”
That approach reportedly influenced Jenner’s own behavior online.
Despite having hundreds of millions of followers across Instagram and TikTok, she has rarely shared public content featuring Chalamet.
The actor has also avoided appearing on Hulu’s “The Kardashians” since they began dating.
Even members of Jenner’s family reportedly helped keep the relationship low-profile at first. Last year, fans noticed Kim Kardashian allegedly blurred Chalamet’s name from an Easter table setting shared online.
Jenner herself later hinted at why she became more private while speaking to ELLE in October 2025.
“I think it’s important to keep things to yourself,” she explained. “It’s hard for me to make a decision by myself sometimes, so the opinion of the whole world… it can be tough.”

Sources now claim Jenner has grown far more confident in the relationship than she was during its earlier stages.
A second insider explained that the reality TV star previously struggled with Chalamet spending long stretches away filming movies.
The insider shared, “Kylie was initially jealous that she wasn’t spending enough time with him when he goes off filming, but now they talk to each other every day and every night when he is on set, and they hang out with each other often enough that any of those previous jealousy or trust issues are just not a thing anymore.”
Another source added that Jenner no longer feels threatened by Chalamet maintaining interests and friendships outside the relationship.
“Kylie is confident that she’s number one in Timothee’s life now,” the insider shared. “She used to be insecure in the relationship and she was open about it.”
The source added, “She’s accepted he has friends and interests that don’t always include her.”
Publicly, the pair have appeared increasingly comfortable together over recent months, frequently attending basketball games, award shows, and celebrity events side by side.

Now, insiders believe the relationship could soon move into an even more serious phase.
Engagement rumors recently intensified after Kylie Jenner was spotted wearing a massive pear-shaped diamond ring while attending a New York Knicks playoff game with Timothée Chalamet.
Although she has reportedly worn the jewelry before, speculation exploded again after sources claimed the actor is fully committed to a future with her.
“Nobody would be surprised if they got engaged soon,” one insider claimed. “He refers to her to all their mutual friends as his partner.”
The source continued, “He is 100 percent on board and in love. He never spoke openly about any woman until he dated Kylie.”
Another insider even suggested Chalamet’s beloved Knicks could unexpectedly influence the timing of a proposal.
“If the Knicks actually win the title and get rings, don’t be shocked if Timmy suddenly feels a little more inspired to hand Kylie one, too,” the source said. “A championship parade in New York could turn into a very big year for commitments.”
For fans of crime dramas, the 2014 Starz series Power remains one of the best. The series blends together a world of struggle, law enforcement, murder, and romance to deliver an exhilarating viewing experience. Power has been so successful that it has spawned three successful spin-offs so far, with more planned in the near future. Now, Netflix is tapping into that aspect that makes the universe feel electric with enigmatic leads, action, and beautiful sets.
The streamer ordered Nemesis, a Power-esque drama series from the original Power co-creator Courtney A. Kemp. The series is set in Los Angeles and follows two men, Cortane Wilder (Y’Ian Noel) and Isaiah Stiles (Matthew Lamb), on opposite sides of the law, whose drive could kill them both. While the Power universe focuses on the drug trade across American cities, Nemesis is about a different kind of crime. Wilder is an expert criminal specializing in high-stakes heists, while Stiles is a seasoned detective. Nemesis is about crime, stopping it, family, and ambition. One cannot be separated from the others.
Viewers can expect those classic Power qualities that have made the franchise a success — smart criminals, obsessed detectives, trapped spouses, and, of course, the unseen moves. “I love cat-and-mouse chases,” Kemp said in an interview. “They’re not easy to write because you really have to believe that both people have a shot.” Nemesis is a two-man show as Wilder and Stiles engage in a dance that, if someone didn’t know better, would think they’re soulmates, obsessed with each other. But no, they’re nemesis and feed on each other in a manner that could lead to their destruction. The series, co-created by Tani Marole, also stars Michael Potts, Gabrielle Dennis, Jeff Pierre, Domenick Lombardozzi, Cleopatra Coleman, and more.
Meanwhile, the Power universe is still going strong, even with the conclusion of several shows. The flagship series concluded in 2020; Power Book II in 2024; Power Book III is expected to end this year; and Power Book IV concluded earlier this year. However, Starz has another series, Power: Origins, in the works. The series focuses on Ghost and Tommy’s early days before they became the men viewers met in the 2014 series. The series has already cast its leads, with Spencer Moore II as James “Ghost” St. Patrick and Charlie Mann as Tommy Egan.
All episodes of Nemesis Season 1 hit Netflix globally on May 14. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
