Star Trek’s Best Writer Just Threw Fans Under The Bus

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Arguably, the greatest current Star Trek writer is Tawny Newsome: after voicing the hilarious Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks, she began writing for Starfleet Academy, all while working on a new, live-action Trek comedy. Newsome is a powerhouse writer who helped SFA craft its recent tribute to Avery Brooks, but she ruffled more than a few fandom feathers on a recent podcast appearance. That’s because she basically threw the fans under the bus by implying that anyone criticizing Starfleet Academy is simply hating on the show’s younger performances.

Recently, Tawny Newsome conducted an Ask Me Anything on YouTube, and she discussed the criticism that Starfleet Academy had been getting. “The side of the fandom that enjoys tearing these shows down … they exist. Which is fine,” she said. “But there is something different now with this show, because our cast is so young. And I just want to say: really think about who you are tearing down.”

Calculating Who To Blame For Star Trek’s Failures

Taken at face value, Newsome seems to be conflating most (if not all) criticism of shows like Starfleet Academy. That is, anyone who is “tearing these shows down” is also trying to tear down its young cast. However, this reaction doesn’t make any logical sense because almost all major criticisms of the show focus on failures at the writing and production level.

As someone who is deeply entrenched in NuTrek criticism (having contributed many thousands of words to it myself), I can confidently say most critics and even outright haters of Starfleet Academy focus more on the writers than the actors. Sure, you can find the occasional person taking potshots at, say, overweight characters, but even those critiques are limited almost exclusively to the older actors. The general consensus about Starfleet Academy’s young cast seems to be that they are very talented and would simply benefit from better writing and direction.

You’ll Eat What Trek Gives You, And You’ll Like It!

Why, then, is Tawny Newsome deliberately conflating criticism of the show with criticism of its young actors? The simplest explanation is also the saddest: this looks like a very transparent attempt to silence any and all critiques of Starfleet Academy. That show’s biggest defenders will now use her words to argue that anyone who criticizes this new Star Trek spinoff is someone who must hate its young, diverse cast and is therefore not worth listening to.

This is doubly disingenuous because very few NuTrek critics are interested in “tearing these shows down” for the fun of it. For the most part, these are passionate Star Trek fans (usually on the older side) who want the franchise to return to its former glory. For such fans, Starfleet Academy would be a much better show if it focused less on embarrassing Zoomer humor and more on just giving us a good Star Trek episode. “Series Acclimation Mil,” for example, very nearly ruined its touching tributes to Avery Brooks and Deep Space Nine with lowbrow d*ck and fart jokes that were downright embarrassing to watch.

Naked Hypocrisy From Paramount

Using Newsome’s logic, my criticism of this episode’s lowbrow jokes is tantamount to me trying to tear down the cast of Starfleet Academy. But it wasn’t the youthful cast that filled this episode with weird potty humor; it was the middle-aged Newsome, who wrote it! In this sense, her recent podcast comments take on a kind of self-defensive tone, with her instantly demonizing any and all criticisms of the very show she works for.

Tawny Newsome’s words are already pretty offensive to fans like myself who genuinely want NuTrek to improve. However, what is more concerning is the idea that she might speak for Alex Kurtzman or other powerful figures at Paramount when she dismisses all criticism of Starfleet Academy as some inexplicable hatred for its young actors. The biggest hope among many critics is that the new show will get better over time, but it seems clear that the show will never improve if everyone involved with its production is busy making excuses and generally throwing well-meaning critics under the bus.

Paramount To Fans: It’s Always Your Fault

At the end of the day, all that will matter to Paramount is the numbers. Starfleet Academy has already been renewed for a second season, but the series has proven to be controversial among fans and quickly fell out of the Top 10 ranking on Paramount+. This is despite it being a well-marketed new Star Trek show. Should viewership get low enough, the show might get prematurely canceled, like Discovery and Lower Decks before it.

For Starfleet Academy skeptics, this is the ultimate Kobayashi Maru: if you watch the show and complain, then you are criticized for tearing down the series and its actors, and everyone will ask, “why are you watching if you hate it?” But if the show gets canceled, you’ll get blamed, with fans saying the series could have succeeded if you and other haters had simply sucked it up and watched. For NuTrek critics, Tawny Newsome’s words are a sobering reminder of the Paramount mentality: no matter what negative thing happens to a new Star Trek show, it will always be your fault for not blindly liking it!

In the new explosive tell-all docuseries, “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” several personalities from the early 2000s reality show discussed some of the series’ most controversial moments and its place in pop culture history.

The Netflix documentary also explored Tyra Banks’ alleged fallout with Jay Manuel—something that occurred after the former creative director revealed he wanted to step away from competition series during an earlier season.

While the first episode of “Reality Check” gives viewers a bit of background on how “America’s Next Top Model” came to be, the second and third episodes delve into some of the show’s biggest scandals, including Manuel’s relationship with Banks.

Manuel explained in one of the docuseries’ confessional interviews that although he initially loved filming the show, he was ready to spread his wings and pursue other opportunities after a few years as the reality show’s creative director.

Leaving, however, wasn’t as easy as Manuel thought it’d be. “I just felt like if I said no to Tyra I would be letting her down,” Manuel said in one of the episodes.

When Manuel finally worked up the courage to speak with Banks about his future on the show, he said he had sent her an email, and she replied with three words that would permanently change their dynamic.

“I am disappointed,” the reported email said.

Manuel shared that after he announced his plans to leave the series, executives called and begged him to stay on for another season so they would have more time to find his replacement.

Manuel added that whoever he was speaking to essentially threatened to have him blacklisted had he chosen not to return. “There was a warning that strikes the fear of God in you,” he said. “You know, people talk about being blacklisted. Those words were not used, but I had suspected that that’s what it would turn into.”

Manuel’s relationship with Banks is just a small portion of the docuseries, according to an earlier report from The Blast. In addition to Manuel, other judges, J. Alexander and Nigel Barker, along with creator Ken Mok, and former contestants Whitney Thompson, Giselle Samson, Shannon Stewart, Shandi Sullivan, Dani Evans, and Keenyah Hill, are also involved.

The episodes take viewers on a trip down memory lane, looking back on some of “America’s Next Top Model’s” most controversial moments, including the race-swapping challenge, how producers edited certain women to look, and the network’s decision to air Sullivan’s heartbreaking break-up with her boyfriend, and what led to that.

At one point in the series, Banks admits that at a certain point, things on the set of “ANTM” got out of hand.

“I knew I went too far. It was very, very intense, but you guys were demanding it, so we kept pushing it, more and more and more,” the former Victoria’s Secret model shared.

Regarding the season 4 race-swapping shoot (which has garnered much backlash from social media users today), Manuel admitted that he knew it wasn’t right. “My parents are from South Africa, they grew up during Apartheid. I’m very aware of that history and I just said, like, race swapping? Wow,” he said on camera.

Manuel even claimed that he asked to be excused from the shoot but was denied. “I recognized that my role was starting to have limitations and that shoot was happening regardless,” he added. “If you really look for it, you can see it on my face. Especially the setup for the day where I tell the girls what we’re doing. I could tell. I was just like, double swallowing, but I just had to do my job.”

66 Years Ago, Frank Sinatra Launched One of The Greatest Record Labels Ever Made

Published

on

Sixty-six years ago, Frank Sinatra changed the music industry forever by launching Reprise Records. It was an unapologetically bold move that redefined how the industry viewed, and later respected, artist ownership and creative freedom. Already a global superstar, Sinatra broke away from Capitol Records after growing frustration with feeling restricted and even controlled.

Determined that no other musician would feel the same, Sinatra built a label that truly valued its musicians. His bold creation later signing legends including The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell. It was a courageous, industry-shaking act that empowered generations to come.

Up until 1960, Frank Sinatra was the ultimate crooner. He had starred in fan favorite movies like High Society and Guys and Dolls, and released Come Fly With Me, but he wanted more than a poster boy. Before paving his own way, Sinatra was signed with Capitol Records, but he felt constricted by the big corporation. As one of the biggest musicians on the planet, it was reasonable for Sinatra to want a sense of control over his music if millions were listening. He was no longer a newcomer, he no longer needed guidance. Sinatra had wits, and he was ready to use them.

Reprise Records was launched, and soon after, Sinatra released Ring-a-Ding-Ding! It was very clear that Sinatra was the boss of the label, and legend has it he soon garnered the nickname of Chairman of the Board. While he was CEO, the nickname echoed the ultimate commanding energy Sinatra had. In the first signing of Reprise Records, Sinatra made sure that his nearest and dearest in the community gained the right kind of representation in order for them to feel creatively fulfilled. This included Rat Pack members Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., but also Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, and, of course, Nancy Sinatra.

But it was all in the name of creative freedom, liberation, and autonomy. One of the founding principles of Reprise Records was for musical artists to gain full ownership of their work, including publishing rights. This bold move was what set Reprise up as a revolutionary label for its time, and one that still has a more artist-centered ethos than many others today.

Reprise Records Opened the Door For Other Legendary Musicians

Reprise was revolutionary in its music-first philosophy, but it was struggling to be a commercial triumph. In 1963, Warner Bros made a deal with the label, ultimately purchasing two-thirds to make Reprise a subsidiary of Warner Bros. In exchange, Sinatra would be a member of their film stable. Nevertheless, Sinatra remained the owner of a third of Reprise, keeping him a key figure of the label. The true key figure in this negotiation, though, was Reprise president Mo Ostin, who actually went on to chair Warner Bros. Records from 1972 to 1994. The deal ensured Reprise did not lose sight of its foundational principles, and it continued to be a label with musical artists truly at its core.

With Reprise’s cash flow rescued, and the increased powers of distribution and marketing from Warner Bros, Sinatra’s label was ready to make serious moves. The 1960s was a decade of rapid evolution, perhaps the quickest of the entire twentieth century. Mods quickly turned psychedelic, folk shifted into pop, and rock and roll transformed into heavy metal. To keep up with these turbulent times, Reprise soon ensured that their roster expanded from the familiarity of the Rat Pack to adopting the seriously big names of the ‘60s.

The musical expansion of Reprise included signing Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, and The Beach Boys. The diversification of the label was crucial in Reprise gaining the success that it was beginning to experience. The musicians they represented were young and genuinely cool, and it was obvious through their work that they were afforded an unshackled approach to their writing and performance. Joni Mitchell wrote unapologetically from the heart, refusing to be filtered, Jimi Hendrix was brilliantly unruly, and Neil Young kept his raw acoustic roots close to folk.

By 1976, Reprise entered an era of dormancy, and the label was deactivated except for the discography of Sinatra and Young, who insisted the logo remained on their releases. Most of the artists signed to Reprise at that time ultimately moved over to Warner Bros, but this wasn’t the last chapter for Reprise. In 1987, Ostin announced the reactivation of Reprise Records, and it continues to operate. The label has been on a journey since its formation 66 years ago, but a dedication to prioritizing artists in a sometimes cynical industry takes courage. That courage, led by Sinatra, has truly paid off.

Cavallari opened up about a new non-negotiable in her dating life, shaped by her experiences as a mom.

During a rapid-fire segment on dating preferences, Cavallari said a man who doesn’t have children and doesn’t want them is now a deal breaker for her.

“That’s become a new deal breaker for me,” she explained. “Someone who doesn’t have kids and doesn’t want any, I’m like, ‘You won’t understand my life.’”

Shahi agreed, noting that motherhood expands a woman’s emotional perspective, and a potential partner without children might struggle to relate.

At the time, an insider shared that while Estes wanted to “settle down and start a family,” Cavallari was content with her life and three children, and the 13-year age gap also played a role.

The source added, “As they started to get more serious in their relationship, issues started to surface. They kept having conversations about the future, but weren’t aligned.”

Netflix Turns Jason Statham’s 42% RT ‘Equalizer’ Alternative Into a Streaming Smash

Published

on

Jason Statham and his daughter ride horses in the woods in Homefront

Jason Statham hasn’t exactly started the year on a hot streak after his new movie, Shelter, is struggling to get off the ground at the box office. The action thriller carries a $40 million budget, but it’s grossed only $29 million at the box office at the time of writing. Statham will have a chance to redeem himself later this year when Mutiny comes out this August, though. Over the years, he’s starred in plenty of action hits and misses, so Shelter‘s unfortunate box office failure likely won’t hold him back at all.

However, long before the idea of Shelter ever popped into anyone’s head, Statham starred in a critically panned drug crime thriller that’s finally getting its due on streaming. Statham stars alongside Winona Ryder (Stranger Things) and James Franco (Spider-Man 3) in Homefront, a conspiracy thriller following a former DEA agent who moves to a quiet town to spend more time with his daughter, when he gets tangled up with a local meth drug lord. Homefront has been compared to Denzel Washington’s first Equalizer movie, with both films having similar plots following a retired former operative who is pulled back into the action.

Homefront recently began streaming on Netflix in America, where it’s quietly become one of the streamer’s top 10 most popular movies in the last week. The film earned scores of 42% from critics and 61% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $48 million at the box office against a $22 million budget. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for Homefront with Gary Fleder directing. Stallone originally wrote the part in Homefront for himself, but he later chose to go with Statham after deciding he was too old for the role.

Does Jason Statham Have Any Other Movies on Netflix?

Jason Statham does have other movies streaming on Netflix, but one of them is confirmed to leave soon. Netflix is removing Snatch, the crime thriller co-starring Brad Pitt, from its streaming library at the end of the month on February 28. Wrath of Man, the 2021 action thriller directed by Guy Ritchie, is also streaming on Netflix right now. It was one of the platform’s most popular movies in January. The fourth Expendables movie has even been confirmed to begin streaming on Netflix later this month, on February 20.

Be sure to watch Homefront before it leaves Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.

20 Years Later, Disney’s 151-Minute Adventure Sequel Sails Back Into the Spotlight

Published

on

pirates-of-the-caribbean-deadman-s-chest-poster.jpg

Streaming charts have a funny way of resurfacing movies that were always good but didn’t stay in the day-to-day conversation, and for this particular case, despite a billion-dollar footprint. Right now, one Disney sequel is quietly doing exactly that and reminding people what big, clean blockbuster craftsmanship looks like when it’s driven by set pieces, character momentum, and a premise that keeps escalating instead of stalling. It’s also a case study in why length doesn’t automatically mean bloat: this one runs 151 minutes, yet it’s paced like it’s trying to beat the clock.

This movie unleashed a villain so visually convincing and so immediately iconic that the movie’s entire mood shifts the second he enters. The filmmaking is confident, too, with a director who knows how to stage action so you always understand geography, stakes, and the next complication. And audiences showed up in a massive way back in 2006: it was made for about $225M and ended up crossing $1.06B worldwide, the kind of commercial footprint that turns a sequel into an event.

That sneaky sleeper, as per FlixPatrol, is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which is currently charting on Disney+’s Top 10 this week — most notably in the United States, where it moved from #9 yesterday and is currently at #10 at the time of writing (with additional appearances in markets like Italy and San Marino). If you’ve ever wondered why Davy Jones still gets cited as a gold-standard blockbuster antagonist (brought to life by Bill Nighy’s performance and cutting-edge effects), the algorithm is basically telling you it’s time for a rewatch.

What’s New With the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot?

The latest, credible signal is still that Jerry Bruckheimer is still steering development and framing the next film as a reboot/soft reset rather than a straight “Part 6.” He’s also said the screenplay is still being worked on (with Jeff Nathanson on draft duty) and that the post-strike slowdown is part of why it’s taking longer to lock. Meanwhile, there’s no solid update on Johnny Depp’s involvement and Margot Robbie being in the orbit.

Depp, meanwhile, after all that controversy and a long hiatus, is set to have a big year with Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol and possibly Day Drinker. The release date for A Christmas Carol is currently stated as November 13, 2026, and the release date for Day Drinker is not yet unveiled. The next couple of months will also either completely open or close the door on Depp’s return for a potential sixth POTC film.

All Pirates of the Caribbean films are available to stream on Disney+. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

More On Victoria Woods’ Spicy Exchanges With Lil Pump, The Game, Finesse2Tymes, Charlamagne Tha God, Gloss Up & Others

As The Shade Room previously reported, Victoria Woods sparked heat with a few other celebrities since going off on her sister GloRilla for alleged financial neglect. Earlier this month, Finesse2Tymes told her to get up off her ass and make money instead of airing out her family’s business. And she responded with her own set of NSFW words.

Subsequently, Charlamage Tha God told her to get a job, and she responded by calling him “sassy.” Furthermore, Boosie also weighed in, explaining that celebrities aren’t as rich as people think, and she clapped back by blasting him as homophobic. Then, she and Gloss Up traded words, and Gloss began selling NSFW T-shirts of Woods, per The Shade Room.

Most recently, Woods said The Game wasn’t a celebrity after she shared that he doesn’t feel GloRilla is obligated to help her. In turn, Game clapped back with a spicy post.

Since then, Woods has shared spicy words for Lil Pump. This, after Pump called her “dumb” and incorrectly claimed that she spent the $2,500 she received from Tory Lanez on a new chain.
