The Sci-Fi Epic Every Marvel Fan Must Watch Before Avengers: Doomsday

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Right now, Marvel fans are hyped for Avengers: Doomsday, eager to see their favorite characters fight the good fight against evil once more. Robert Downey Jr. is inexplicably returning to play Doctor Doom, but the real draw of this film is arguably Chris Evans. He retired from being Captain America back in Avengers: Endgame, but he is suiting up again for Doomsday, and MCU fans around the world are itching to see their favorite star-spangled superhero kicking butt and taking names.

But if you want to see Chris Evans leading a fight against the greatest evil humanity has ever faced, you don’t have to wait for Avengers: Doomsday to hit theaters. Snowpiercer (2013) is a movie where the Captain America actor leads what’s left of humanity in a fight for equality against a tyrant determined to rule the world with an iron fist. The revolution will be televised, and all you have to do is stream this film (from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho) for free on Tubi!

He Can Do This All Day

The premise of Snowpiercer is that Earth has been forced into a new ice age by science gone wrong, forcing what is left of humanity to live in a giant train that never stops moving. Unfortunately, the train segregates everybody by class, allowing the rich elite to live a life of luxury at the front of the train while the poor live in abusive squalor in the back of the train. Eventually, one man decides to kickstart a kind of people’s revolution, leading a growing army of disgruntled supporters towards the front, where they are intent on forcing the man in charge of this railway dystopia to finally face justice.

Snowpiercer is a film where some of Hollywood’s greatest actors are taking the same train: Tilda Swinton (best known for We Need To Talk About Kevin) plays an evil minister intent on cutting this rebellion off at its knees. Meanwhile, Ed Harris (best known for The Truman Show) plays the Big Bad of the movie, a transportation magnate who holds the fate of all humanity in his conniving little hands. Finally, John Hurt (best known for Alien) plays mentor to the main character, encouraging a rebellion that could completely change what’s left of the world.

Captain America Like You’ve Never Seen Him Before

The main character is played by Chris Evans (best known for The Avengers), who gives his best non-MCU performance in this dystopian thriller. He never feels like a generic action hero, and you can feel the tortured humanity inside his character rage with every swing of the axe. The character isn’t as squeaky clean as his famous Marvel hero, but in his relentless fight for justice and equality, Evans’ Snowpiercer character channels the best of what made Captain America great.

Snowpiercer was a solid hit at the box office, earning $86.8 million against a budget of $40 million. Despite this success, the film never got a proper sequel, and director Bong Joon-ho would later go on to helm the Academy Award-winning horror masterpiece Parasite. However, he still found time to executive produce the Snowpiercer television series, which would go on to be nominated for a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy.

A Thriller That Never Phones It In

When Snowpiercer premiered, it hit professional reviewers with all the force of a grain hurtling through the post-apocalypse. On Rotten Tomatoes, it had a rating of 94 percent, with critics lauding the film for its ambitious scope and action-packed execution. They particularly praised the film as an alternative to the effects-driven blockbusters that made Chris Evans a household name, so it’s particularly pleasing to see him get back to basics in a movie that dares to redefine the entire sci-fi/action genre.

Part of what makes Snowpiercer so magical is that it is directed by Bong Joon-ho, who has mastered the art of creating movies with a message that never feels overly preachy. His Best Picture winner Parasite, for example, is a movie you can enjoy for its trenchant social commentary or as a taut thriller whose tension can be cut with a knife. Snowpiercer works the same way: the film clearly has plenty to say about class consciousness and economic oppression, but it’s entirely possible to just enjoy this as a fast-paced action movie where Captain America finally starts fighting dirty.

Given the combination of a talented director and veteran actors, it won’t surprise you that Snowpiercer is full of unforgettable performances. Even better, these famous faces fully disappear into their roles, their celebrity status never disrupting the immersive nature of this subversive film. This is a movie where class warfare comes to life in the most brutal possible way, and these actors help pack an insane amount of worldbuilding into a runtime of just over two hours.

The Best Worldbuilding Since Mad Max: Fury Road

Speaking of worldbuilding, this movie does such a great job of fleshing out this fictional universe that it helped inspire four seasons of a fan-favorite television show. This allows franchise newbies the best of both worlds: if you love the movie enough, you can dive into the TV show and maybe even the graphic novel (Le Transperceneige) the entire franchise is based on. Alternatively, you can enjoy the film as a singular experience, one in which Chris Evans and other big names give some of the most impressive performances of their careers.

Whenever you’re ready to be impressed, you can stream Snowpiercer for free on Tubi. It’s a crowd-pleasing film with both practical effects and beautiful visuals, and it has more commentary on economics and politics than you’ll get out of an entire semester of Political Science. Best of all, it’s perfect for Marvel fans who want to whet their appetite for Avengers: Doomsday with the most intense movie that Chris Evans has ever made!

‘Yellowstone’ Star’s Satirical Neo-Western Finds Streaming Success After Box Office Struggles

Luke Grimes in Eddington

10 years ago, most people had never heard of A24, but now it’s one of the most prominent movie studios in Hollywood. A24 has what every other studio could only hope for, which is a distinct identity. A24 may not be consistently producing billion-dollar blockbusters year after year, but the studio is almost always in contention with a few movies when Awards season comes around. The studio also works with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood — just this weekend, A24 will work with Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell for How to Make a Killing, the thriller from John Patton Ford that also stars Margaret Qualley. A24 also has The Drama coming out soon. The film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.

However, as with any studio, A24 has some misses every year. Last year, one of its biggest misfires — both critically and financially — was Eddington. The contemporary Western is set in May 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and follows a standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor that sparks a powder keg, pitting neighbor against neighbor. The film was written and directed by Ari Aster, and it stars Pedro Pascal alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. A24 spent $25 million on the production of Eddington, but the film grossed only $13 million at the box office. However, Eddington is streaming on HBO Max around the world, where the film has landed in the global top 10 in more than 15 countries. The film has finally found its audience despite a poor box office performance.

What Else is Streaming on HBO Max Right Now?

One of the most popular movies on HBO Max right now is M3GAN 2.0, the sci-fi bomb that performed so poorly it caused its sequel to be pulled from the release schedule. 28 Years Later, the 2025 legacy sequel to Cillian Murphy’s horror classic that inspired a franchise. Months after its HBO premiere, James Gunn’s Superman is also staging a streaming comeback on HBO — it’s currently #8 on the streamer’s global charts. Over on the TV side of things, HBO is living up to its mantra as the premier home for prestige TV. Both A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and The Pitt have been trading places in the top spot for a few weeks now.

Be sure to watch Eddington on HBO Max and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.

The Actress Intends To Focus on ‘Forward Momentum’ This Year

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Jessica Alba shared a carousel of photos and videos, ranging from a picture of her younger self to inspirational posts, along with a gorgeous selfie that highlighted her glowing skin.

However, the caption drew the most attention, as Alba reflected on lessons from the past year and shared her hopes for the new Lunar Year.

“Entering the Year of the Horse feeling ready, grounded and grateful for where I stand, for the path that led me here, and for all that’s still to come,” the 44-year-old wrote.

“The past year – Year of the Snake – was all about shedding and releasing what no longer serves. Facing hard truths. Making meaningful changes,” the actress further remarked.

According to Alba, her focus for the new year was “forward momentum,” which she described as “moving with intention, trusting (the universe) the ride, and leaning into this year with courage.”

“It doesn’t need to be perfect, just start what you’ve been sitting with for so long – that inner knowing. This is your moment. Take action. Year of the Horse, I’m ready,” the actress concluded.

Alba’s message comes four days after her ex-husband, Cash Warren, moved to finalize their divorce.

The filed documents revealed that neither party is contesting the divorce, and there won’t be any payment of spousal support, per People Magazine.

The duo was married for 16 years, during which they welcomed daughters Honor Marie, 17, and Haven Garner, 14, as well as son Hayes Alba, 8.

At the time of their split, “irreconcilable differences” were cited as the reason. Sources who later spoke with US Weekly revealed that the former couple had deep trust issues that led to the marriage hitting the rocks despite initially trying to make things work.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, while the ex-couple has decided against spousal support payments, Alba has agreed to pay Warren $3 million to balance their shared assets, which includes a a $10 million Beverly Hills mansion they acquired in 2017.

The actress is expected to make the payments in two non-taxable installments: $1.5 million now and the other half in 2027.

“You started out as the year I wanted to forget, but so damn thankful you grew into the year I’ll always remember,” Warren captioned the post, seemingly referencing his split from Alba.

“A few lessons I learned over last 365 days,” he added. “Acceptance is suffering’s antidote. Our minds are the OG algorithm. Negative thoughts will play on repeat if you allow them to[.] The line between enlightenment and narcissism is razor-thin. Don’t be fooled by those who don’t know the difference.”

Like Alba, Warren included a carousel of photos in the post, many of which featured moments with his family.

Kevin Costner’s 35-Year-Old Fantasy Epic Hits a Bullseye on Netflix

Published

Kevin Costner on the red carpet with an image of a man behind him.

Kevin Costner is one of the most popular movie stars in the world, and it all dates back to his dual Oscar-winning work with Dances With Wolves. Costner arrived as a star in the 90s with other performances in The Postman and The Bodyguard, but in the later stages of his career, he became even more famous for his work in Taylor Sheridan’s most popular series. Costner first put on his boots to play John Dutton in Yellowstone in 2018, and he spent the better part of 10 years playing the character before his final performance in 2024. Costner’s relationship with Sheridan may have started on solid ground, but by the end of the show, it’s clear he was ready to move on to other projects.

However, long before Costner ever had the task of wrangling duties at Yellowstone ranch, he starred in a classic historical epic that’s aged like fine wine. In 1991, Costner starred as the legendary archer in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which follows the legendary outlaw who faces off against the brutal tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, and Christian Slater star alongside Costner in the film, and it was directed by Kevin Reynolds with Pen Densham and John Watson working on the script. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is not streaming anywhere in America at the time of writing, but globally, the film is charting in the Netflix top 10 in several countries around the world. It grossed $390 million at the box office against a $48 million budget.

Kevin Costner’s ‘Robin Hood’ Has Aged Better Than Russell Crowe’s

Kevin Costner is far from the only actor to bring the legendary tale of Robin Hood to life on the big screen. Russell Crowe also teamed up with Ridley Scott to do the same thing back in 2010, but most fans would agree that Costner’s film did a much better job handling the story. Crowe recently went public, criticizing how Robin Hood was brought to the big screen, noting that more than 15 minutes of scenes were cut from the final cut. Robin Hood (2010) is currently streaming on HBO Max, and there’s also a TV version now streaming on MGM+ starring Game of Thrones veteran Sean Bean.

Check out Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on VOD platforms like Prime Video and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.

Every time I visit Copenhagen, I always get a ton of fashion inspiration, but my most recent winter trip was the best one yet. In the frigid Danish capital, people still managed to stay stylish and warm thanks to stunning fur fashion designs. Almost every woman stepped outside wearing some sort of fur — I saw so many coats, hats, scarves, hoods and more.

In a country where the winters feel extra long and frigid, the Danes manage to stay peppy with their furry fashions. So take some notes from Copenhagen dwellers and upgrade your winter wardrobe with the chicest faux fur pieces that are plush, warm and ridiculously stylish.

Dress Like a Copenhagen Socialite in These 13 Fur Pieces

1. Top Pick: This extra fluffy overcoat could pass for real fur thanks to the nuanced shading. Because of this, each piece looks one-of-a-kind.

2. Make a Statement: Along with neutral-hued coats, the most fashionable girls in Copenhagen opted for loud cheetah prints — just like this trendy long coat — to show off their versatile sense of style.

3. Go Oversized: The extra-large lapels on this blanket-like fur coat give off millionaire vibes. I love that this design makes any outfit feel more elevated.

Living and visiting New York are two very different things, especially in the wintertime. After living in New York City for about seven years, I’m still in awe of the twinkling bright lights, just-fallen snow and the smell of sweet peanuts in the air. And then a gust of frigid, blustery air hits my face, […]

4. Accessorized to the Nines: Beyond coats, Scandi girls keep their heads and ears toasty warm with Russian-style fur hats. This extra fuzzy one blocks out every ounce of cold air.

5. Go Shaggy: Textured fur coats give off cool girl vibes — and every girl in Copenhagen truly does look effortlessly chic when they wear a shaggy overcoat.

6. Fresh Take on Fur: Faux fur vests were also everywhere in the Danish capital. Vests like this bushy, cropped style were styled with baggy jeans and flowy shirts for a boho aesthetic.

7. Block the Chill: I was insanely envious of the Scandi girls with hooded fur coats. Luckily, Quince makes an ultra-plush faux fur jacket style that is what Nordic dreams are made of.

8. Just a Touch: I spotted more than full fur outerwear. Puffer coats with elegant fur trim — exactly like this style from Quince — were also super popular. I felt warmer just looking at them!

9. Sassy Hat: Fuzzy bucket hats were more than just functional in Copenhagen. They also showcased the Danes’ spunky personality and were the finishing touch to every outfit.

10. Layer on the Fur: The Copenhagen girls didn’t just wear fur coats. Many of them also had a woven fur scarf wrapped around their necks for extra warmth.

11. Unexpected Fur: What’s better than a fuzzy fur coat? How about an extra fun furry purse that’s a daring accessory for winter? I love this playful design from Naked Wardrobe.

12. Sale Alert: You’ll feel extra glamorous in a cropped, hooded faux fur jacket. I added it to my cart since it’s on sale!

13. The Trendiest of All: Keep the faux fur party going even after you take off your coat with a knitted cowl draped across your shoulders. Total Scandinavian queen vibes!

Raunchy End-Of-Days Comedy Is A High-Stakes Game

By Robert Scucci
| Published

The idea of playing video games until the world ends may sound like a lot of fun in the right setting, but 2018’s Relaxer will make you think twice. Set in 1999, just before the Y2K apocalypse, Relaxer isn’t one of those feel-good stories about getting together with your friends, chugging Mountain Dew, eating pizza, and going on an epic multiplayer adventure. Instead, it’s a solitary trudge through an isolated world of apathy and decay. It’s a tough watch, even nauseating at times, but if your video game habit is causing problems in your day-to-day life, Relaxer may be the wakeup call you’ve been looking for because it pulls no punches.

Set almost entirely on one man’s couch, Relaxer is claustrophobic, filthy, and enough to make you want to turn the Nintendo off and step on some grass. If you can make it through this one without tasting that metallic, “I’m about to throw up,” flavor on the back of your tongue, give yourself a pat on the back for being strong willed and possessing the kind of intestinal fortitude that escapes me.

The Ultimate Slacker Comedy

Relaxer 2019

Relaxer begins with our hero, if you could call him that, Abbie (Joshua Burge), playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and chugging milk whenever his older brother, Cam (David Dastmalchian), looks up from his stopwatch. This “challenge,” as they put it, is the latest in a long line of failed attempts where Abbie taps out because he makes himself sick chasing whatever high score or record is in front of him.

Sitting in a pool of his own vomit, Abbie promises Cam, who’s rightfully frustrated with his slacker brother’s lack of contributions to rent and utilities, that he’s going to do the unthinkable. Legend has it that if he can document himself passing level 256 of Pac-Man, something that has only been done once before, he’ll win $100,000 and stop being such a burden. Cam reluctantly agrees to support him through the challenge, under one condition: Abbie cannot even think about leaving the couch until he accomplishes what he set out to do.

Relaxer 2019

Taking Cam’s conditions seriously, Abbie gets to work but quickly runs into logistical problems. At some point, he has to eat, drink, and use the bathroom, and he has to make do. At multiple moments throughout Relaxer, Cam throws on a pair of 3D glasses that he believes give him telekinetic powers when the moment is right. It’s never made clear whether Abbie actually gains anything mystical while wearing the glasses, but enough strange coincidences encourage him to lean into the idea as he attempts to beat the unbeatable Pac-Man level.

Know What You’re Getting Into

While Relaxer’s premise is ridiculous on its own, the execution is absolutely nauseating. Abbie is dressed only in underwear, which are obviously soiled thanks to the conditions of his wager. When plumbing pipes burst, he gets sprayed with their contents. When the windows break, the elements pour inside. When somebody stops by, it’s either an acquaintance offering expired food from the fridge or an exterminator about to bug bomb the place even though Abbie refuses to leave.

Relaxer 2019

Abbie sits through all of it, for months, maybe even years. He uses a reaching stick to collect rainwater from the broken window, nearly asphyxiates himself with noxious chemicals, and wallows in so much filth that if he ever beats the game, he’ll either be stuck to the couch or physically unable to stand. It’s all so disgusting. To make matters worse, every single character in Relaxer is catastrophically unlikeable.

While Relaxer may feel like an endurance test in every conceivable way, it does an excellent job of getting its point across. It’s meant to be unappealing to all senses. It’s meant to show how desperate Abbie becomes in pursuit of his challenge. It’s meant to be uncomfortable and claustrophobic. It’s almost as if writer-director Joel Potrykus made this movie specifically to bother people, and if so, he succeeds in every measurable way.

Relaxer 2019

As of this writing, Relaxer is streaming for free on Tubi.
