Taylor Sheridan’s First ‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off of 2026 Leaves ‘Landman’ in the Dust on Streaming

Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton on horseback in Marshals

Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone universe has been experiencing some turbulence recently, with a lack of clarity on just where the franchise is heading. It was earlier reported that the two previous spin-offs — 1883 and 1923 — would be followed by a show titled 1944. But there has been no firm update about the project’s progress since last year. The Madison, which was initially revealed to be set in the Yellowstone universe, entered production and will debut this year, but it was recently reported that the show’s ties to the franchise are being severed. This uncertainty could be a result of Sheridan’s deal with Paramount nearing conclusion; he has signed a lucrative contract with NBCUniversal that begins in 2029. Sheridan continues to be Paramount’s most successful talent, with numerous hits to his name. He serves as an executive producer on the recently released spin-off Marshals, which delivered predictably terrific results upon release.

Marshals revolves around Luke Grimes‘ character from Yellowstone, which ended abruptly after a five-season run. The show came to a screeching halt following a fallout between Sheridan and star Kevin Costner. Marshals premiered on CBS on March 1 and received the worst reviews of any Yellowstone property. It currently holds a 45% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes; this is lower than the 58% score of Yellowstone‘s premiere season. The flagship series improved as the years passed, with the third season scoring a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Both 1883 and 1923, on the other hand, earned critical acclaim; their Rotten Tomatoes scores are hovering in the high-80s.

‘Marshals’ Overtook a Taylor Sheridan Classic on the Streaming Charts

In his review, Collider’s Michael John Petty praised the show for embracing the network television format and wrote, “Marshals carves out its own identity from the get-go by trimming Kayce’s supporting cast and infusing the drama with new faces that have no ties to his family’s complicated Montana history.” Despite the lukewarm reviews, audiences were clearly interested in checking the new show out. According to FlixPatrol, Marshals took the number two spot on the domestic Paramount+ charts following its debut, behind South Park and ahead of Sheridan’s Landman. The show also features Logan Marshall-Green, Mo Brings Plenty, Gil Birmingham, and Arielle Kebbel, and will air new episodes on Sundays.

Both Marshals and Landman are streaming now on Paramount+. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

Deadliest-Catch-Star-Todd-Meadows-Cause-of-Death-Revealed-FB-F1.jpg

Todd Meadows was more than a deckhand on Deadliest Catch — he was also a dedicated father and loyal friend who was “doing what he loved.”

His life was tragically cut short at 25 after a “fishing-related incident” while filming the show on February 25, 2026, a heartbreaking reminder of the inherent risks that come with crabbing off the Alaskan coast. Meadows leaves behind three young sons whose lives will forever reflect the strength and spirit he carried.

Captain Rick Shelford broke the devastating news on March 2, 2026, describing the day Meadows died as “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea.”

Sources told TMZ that a memo was sent to producers informing them about the incident that took place while crabbing out on Alaskan waters, also offering resources to cast and crew who are mourning the death of their crewmate. It’s unclear if cameras caught the accident on tape.

Read on to learn more about Meadows and how his family is honoring his legacy in the wake of his death.

Who Is Todd Meadows?

Todd Meadows is from Montesano, Washington. He joined the Aleutian Lady crew as a deckhand in May 2025, according to his Facebook page. His final photo aboard the vessel was shared on February 17, 2026, just days before his death.

Meadows was the newest member of the Aleutian Lady crew, but he “quickly became family,” Captain Rick Shelford shared in his tribute. “His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away,” Shelford added. “His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”

Todd Meadows Is Honored by His Loved Ones After His Death

Kennady Harvey, who shared three boys with Todd Meadows, vowed to keep his memory alive.

“Not only were you my children’s father but you were my best friend. No matter what terms we were on we always came to each other for comfort and no one could understand why but us,” she wrote in part via Facebook on February 26, 2026. “I know how much you loved me and the boys and I just hope you knew how much I loved you and I never stopped loving you. You passed doing what you loved and that brings me a little bit of comfort knowing that.”

Meadows’ grandmother Connie Lambert said her “heart is so full of love and sadness” after the death of her grandson, sharing how grateful she was that he “didn’t suffer through the terrible accident.”

Lambert praised the men aboard the vessel who tried to help, as well as the United States Coast Guard for “everything they did to save you.” She continued, “I know there is no one to blame for this, but it certainly doesn’t make it any easier to digest.”

Rozlyn Meadows, Meadows’ sister, also responded to a tribute on Facebook, writing, “I love my brother so dearly and I’m so glad so many other people got to know him as well! he will be so missed.”

A GoFundMe Has Been Launched in Honor of Todd Meadows

As of March 3, 2026, nearly $30K has been raised out of a new $45K goal in an effort to financially support Meadows’ family after their tragic loss.

“This unimaginable loss has left his children without their father, his parents without their son, his siblings without their brother and his family broken,” the description of his GoFundMe stated.

Inside the Dangers Associated with Todd Meadows’ Job

Working as a deckhand on the Bering Sea comes with several risks, including extreme weather — especially in the winter crab fishery — rough seas and long hours. More potential dangers include drowning, being crushed by heavy equipment, hypothermia and falling on icy decks.

Meadows’ official cause of death has yet to be announced.

Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove stars Captain Gary Ripka and Captain Kenny Ripka previously spoke about the true nature of their gig back in 2016.

“It’s a pretty high-risk job, the most dangerous job in the world,” Gary told ABC NewsRebecca Jarvis at the time. “We’ve lost lots of friends over the years and it’s typical for us to lose one or two or more guys a crab season. That’s just the way of life.”

Karen Gillan's Raunchy, R-Rated Netflix Comedy Is A Mega-Budget Lockdown

By Robert Scucci
| Published

After watching 2022’s The Bubble and then taking a peek at the reviews for the Netflix Original over at Rotten Tomatoes, I’m thoroughly convinced that people don’t know how to have fun. Having been absolutely punished with a 20 percent critical score and a 30 percent audience approval rating, you’d think that The Bubble is a complete failure on every level. My takeaway is that, while disjointed at times, it’s meant to be when you consider the film’s subject matter.

It’s about a bunch of entitled actors, most of whom are past their prime (except for the TikTok girl), locked up in a mansion during the COVID-19 pandemic while trying to make an epic CGI dinosaur movie in the vein of Jurassic World Dominion, with exceedingly disastrous results. While I admittedly haven’t seen a ton of pandemic-era movies that operate on this level of meta commentary, the framework works perfectly as a way to trap all of this talent in one place.

The Bubble 2022

That talent, including Karen Gillan, Pedro Pascal, Fred Armisen, Iris Apatow, Leslie Mann, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kate McKinnon, clearly has a blast with the premise because most of them have been in movies like this before. Their on-set interactions feel like they’re coming from a genuine place of frustration, which makes the satire land even harder.

Quiet On The Set!

The Bubble primarily focuses on Carol Cobb’s (Karen Gillan) struggles as she signs onto the latest installment in the Cliff Beasts franchise, Cliff Beasts 6: Battle for Everest – Memories of a Requiem. Having committed career suicide after starring in the profoundly anti-semitic Jerusalem Rising 2, Carol reluctantly returns to Cliff Beasts as a way to repair her reputation.

The Bubble 2022

Here’s the kicker. The world is still operating under strict COVID-19 lockdown protocol, so production is riddled with problems from the start. Every cast member has to self-quarantine for two weeks in the luxury hotel where filming takes place. Once quarantine is lifted and production can finally begin, we’re introduced to the rest of the cast and crew under the supervision of Darren Eigan (Fred Armisen), an indie filmmaker who has never worked on a big-budget blockbuster before.

Joining the ranks is Dustin Mulray (David Duchovny), who, functioning as a de facto producer, constantly wants to rewrite the script. He mostly wields his influence to win Lauren Van Chance’s (Leslie Mann) affection by giving her better dialogue and more screen time. Pedro Pascal’s Dieter Bravo is a sex and drug addict who clearly needs rehab, but he also needs the payday to fuel his habits, making him a true wildcard. Rounding out the group is Sean Knox (Keegan-Michael Key), who is quietly trying to start a wellness cult while not actively working on the film.

Functioning as the new blood in the Cliff Beasts franchise is Krystal Kris (Iris Apatow), who is so popular on TikTok that Darren is pressured into casting her at the urging of Paula (Kate McKinnon), the studio executive pumping money into the series, to guarantee a viable return for her shareholders.

A Total Disaster Flick

As days turn to weeks, which turn to months, Cliff Beasts 6 runs into one problem after another. Creative differences boil over. Vices begin to take hold. Cast and crew members get sick, though it’s just the flu so they can still work. Stunts are coordinated remotely by John Cena’s Steve, who has a weak signal on his iPad, resulting in serious injuries. Everybody slowly succumbs to cabin fever, and their attempts to escape the compound are met with disciplinary action. Lauren gets her hand shot off, and every actor is forced to wear a tracking device, for example. It’s indentured servitude wrapped in Hollywood accounting, and it’s beautiful.

The Bubble 2022

The meta commentary in The Bubble is what really seals the deal. Each actor wants to complain about their work conditions, only to realize they’re living in a luxury hotel with every amenity imaginable at their disposal. While the production of Cliff Beasts 6 is clearly grueling, they still have the kind of job security most people would risk their lives for, especially during a global pandemic that put countless people out of work.

Now that I think about it, as I’m writing this review, I could see why viewing the pandemic through this lens could rub some people the wrong way. But that’s entertainment, baby.

The “Special Effects” Are The Best Part

The Bubble 2022

My favorite wink and nod in The Bubble is the Cliff Beasts 6 production itself. Shot entirely on green screen, we see the movie from an audience perspective, complete with flying, fire-spitting dinosaurs. The second Darren yells “cut,” we see the reality, which is actors dangling awkwardly from wires and crew members standing in as creatures, wearing green boxes that will be edited in post. We get action sequences that resemble Jurassic World Dominion, a film produced under similar circumstances and the clear target of The Bubble’s satire, and then immediately see how the sausage is made, along with how petty everyone involved truly is.

If I had to compare The Bubble’s energy to any somewhat recent film, I’d say This Is the End is a solid stylistic and spiritual counterpart. While that film features real actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves, The Bubble features real actors playing fictional actors who are playing characters in the movie they’re shooting. The clashing egos, holier-than-thou attitudes, and petty grudges are very much the same in every other aspect.

If you like a sharp, snarky satire that celebrates the very art form it’s actively mocking, with a cast that understands exactly how the industry works, The Bubble will not disappoint. It’s not high-brow stuff, but it’s carried by its ensemble and works far better than you’d expect if you’re judging it by reviews alone.

The Bubble is a Netflix Original and can be streamed with an active subscription.

The Best X-Files Writer Pulled Cruel Pranks On David Duchovny

The Best X-Files Writer Pulled Cruel Pranks On David Duchovny

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Most X-Files fans know Darin Morgan as one of the show’s best writers: after all, he’s responsible for such bangers as “Humbug,” “War of the Coprophages,” and my personal favorite, the Emmy-winning “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose.” He even came back to write a couple of episodes for the otherwise awful X-Files revival. As if that’s not cool enough, he also played one of the series’ most memorable villains: Flukeman, the giant flukeworm from the episode “The Host.”

Morgan didn’t have a great time filming this episode because he found the monster suit too tight and generally uncomfortable. In fact, his hatred of the costume is the primary reason that Flukeman never returned, despite the end of “The Host” teasing that he is still alive. However, the writer has a weird sense of humor, and he managed to make his own fun while shooting the episode. Specifically, he peed on David Duchovny without him knowing!

When The Water’s A Little Too Warm

First, some context: in “The Host,” the Flukeman moves around in the sewers, and Mulder has to get down and dirty in the sewer water to catch the him. At one point, he and Morgan (who was completely ensconced in the Flukeman costume) appeared together, partially submerged in the water. On the X-Files Season 2 DVD special feature “”The Truth About Season Two”, Darin Morgan revealed the hilarious truth: he peed in the water the two men shared, later stating that “I figured Duchovny would never find out.”

Until those DVDs came out, it was fairly easy for Morgan to keep this secret. David Duchovny was unable to detect that he had been urinated on (the truth isn’t the only thing out there, Mulder!), but even if he had, there was no way of knowing who to blame. You see, even though they had brief, verbal interactions, Duchovny never knew who was in the Flukeman suit!

Pranking The Show’s Biggest Star (Again)

Not content with simply peeing on one of the biggest stars of the ‘90s, Morgan ended up pulling one more epic prank on Duchovny. The two were both flying back to Vancouver for filming, and by sheer coincidence, they both ended up sitting next to each other. After about 30 minutes, Morgan hit Duchovny up with a strange request: to sign a book and make the autograph out to his “nemesis.”

David Duchovny went ahead and signed the book, but he was confused about the whole “nemesis” thing. At this point, Darin Morgan admitted that he played the Flukeman, the iconic X-Files villain who nearly got Mulder killed. Fortunately, the Mulder actor found the whole thing funny, and he was impressed that Morgan actually waited half an hour before pulling his prank.

While Duchovny got a kick out of the autograph prank, nobody knows if he ever watched those DVD special features and learned that he spends some of the X-Files’ best monster of the week episode walking through another man’s urine. Of course, rather than being turned off, some of the freakier fans out there might get turned on by this wacky tale. Secretly peeing on Fox Mulder without him knowing? That’s just another day for your average fanfiction writer.

Days of our Lives: EJ Involved in Stephanie Stunt?

Published

Days of our Lives: EJ and Stephanie

Days of Our Lives spoilers wonder if EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) and his secret lab are somehow involved in Stephanie Johnson‘s (Abigail Klein) kidnapping. She’s handcuffed to a chair and terrified. Owen Kent (Wes Ramsey) claims EJ didn’t hire him, but that may not be quite true.

Days of our Lives: EJ DiMera, Stephanie Johnson & Owen Kent Drama Unfolds

One thing we can say for certain is Dr. Rolf (Richard Wharton) has Owen Kent helping keep an eye on the pod person, presumably Lexie Carver. However, we also know Rolf is not the guy who writes checks and does payroll. That’s EJ and Gwen Rizczech.

DOOL History: Kidnappings and Dark DiMera Secrets

Owen Kent is obviously working for Rolf. And Owen wanted to keep Stephanie and Jeremy Horton quiet while he knew Rolf was in the lab next door. I think it’s safe to say Rolf has no idea that Owen kidnapped Stephanie and also trapped Jeremy.

So, here’s the bottom line. I want to figure out if EJ DiMera is payrolling Stephanie’s kidnapping again like he did last time. Or, it could be that EJ is totally in the dark about Owen even being back in Salem. That’s the best-case scenario, but Days of our Lives history says EJ may be involved.

Kiriakis vs DiMera Feud: Victor, Stefano & EJ’s Master Plan

Many years ago, the Kiriakis versus DiMera feud took a really dark turn. Victor Kiriakis had kidnapped Stefano DiMera. In retaliation, EJ hired Owen to do some dirty work. Owen had been working at the Kiriakis estate for Victor as a gardener and a handyman.

It was kind of like what they had Xander doing later. EJ had Owen kidnap Stephanie, who was dating Philip Kiriakis at the time. EJ wanted to use Stephanie as leverage to get his dad Stefano released. Initially, Owen’s abducting Stephanie was just a job. But then it turned into so much more than that on Days of our Lives.

Obsession on Days: Owen, Stephanie & the Mortuary Horror

Owen developed a creepy obsession with Stephanie. As she told Jeremy back then, Owen’s family had a mortuary. He kept Stephanie there in the morgue, stowed away in a cold, claustrophobic metal drawer.

Back then, Stephanie tried to manipulate Owen by using his obsession to her advantage. She was trying to convince Owen to release her. Then the guy went completely rogue. He stopped following EJ’s orders as he became increasingly fixated on Stephanie.

Eventually, Philip Kiriakis, Brady Black, Melanie Jonas, and Shawn-Douglas Brady all worked together. They had a hand in rescuing Stephanie. In the end, Owen was arrested. But he escaped when his prison transport had an accident years ago on Days of our Lives.

That accident is believed by most people to have been orchestrated by the DiMeras, specifically EJ. This was back in 2009, I believe. So nobody even thought of Owen as a suspect in Stephanie Johnson’s kidnapping because it had been so long.

Stephanie Johnson’s Realization and Jeremy’s Framing on Days of our Lives

Once Stephanie saw Owen, everything clicked. It all made sense. That’s why she almost immediately apologized to Jeremy. I was very impressed with that. I thought she might hold it out a little longer, but she apologized right away. Good for her.

With Stephanie now missing again, everybody is out looking for Jeremy because Owen did such a thorough frame job. That’s why Stephanie freaked out when Jeremy showed up in the storage room. Stephanie also believed the frame job.

Jeremy’s Devotion and Stephanie’s Escape Attempts on Days of our Lives

Jeremy is actually being great about all this. He’s very patient and understanding with her. Plus, he seems determined to save Stephanie from Owen no matter what. We know from Days spoilers later this week that Stephanie tries to escape.

Jeremy may even encourage her to go without him if she gets the chance. Stephanie wanted to know from Owen if EJ hired him. He smirked and said no. But he said he understood why Stephanie would ask that.

So they may not believe that this could be going on right next to the super-secret lab without EJ knowing. Plus, Owen told Stephanie and Jeremy that he has a job with night shifts. Owen used EJ’s name when he sent the bugged photo frame to Stephanie and Alex Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson) as an engagement gift. This may be Owen setting up EJ too.

I doubt EJ directly hired Owen. If you recall, EJ helped Alex locate the listening device on the frame when they realized the stalker, not EJ, had sent the frame. We also know now that Owen babysits the pod person at night, likely Lexie.

Owen told the tube lady that once she wakes up, he plans to recycle her tube and use it to smuggle Stephanie out of the hospital and out of Salem. That way, they can begin their new life together.

Owen Kent’s Deadly Plans: Jeremy’s Fate Revealed

As for Jeremy, he was supposed to be in jail right now as a scapegoat. Owen said that flat out. But since Jeremy found Stephanie, now kidnapper Owen has to decide what Jeremy’s fate will be. He said it’s going to be a more permanent solution.

That sounds deadly. So, yeah, I think Owen is planning to kill Jeremy. While EJ doesn’t seem to have hired Owen this time, at least according to the kidnapper himself. The question is — does EJ know that Dr. Rolf hired him?

If so, it must have crossed EJ’s mind that Owen could be the kidnapper. I suspect Dr. Rolf has no idea that Owen kidnapped Stephanie. Rolf has been working for the DiMeras since the late ’90s.

So I’m sure he’s at least heard of Owen. But Rolf might not know about the past kidnapping or just doesn’t care because he’s focused on his work. Rolf doesn’t care about extraneous things. EJ may not be screening who Rolf hires as overnight lab support.

History Repeats? Will EJ and Owen Work Together Again?

The big question is whether history repeated itself and EJ is involved. Maybe he and Owen are both lying. Or maybe, like Rolf, could be that EJ is too distracted. He’s trying to resurrect his dead sister Lexie, run the hospital, deal with Johnny, and juggle other stuff.

Maybe EJ wasn’t paying attention to who exactly Rolf was hiring to work as the henchman on this project. I personally suspect EJ may be totally innocent. If so, that would be a pretty rare occurrence for him. He was involved in Stephanie’s last kidnapping.

But then again, EJ didn’t hesitate to let the cops come into the main lab to investigate the area. That being said, EJ might have said okay to the search because he knew the cops wouldn’t find the real lab.

It was behind the secret door. The cops wouldn’t find the pod person, who is behind the secret door. Nor would they find Owen, who is only there at night and, again, behind the secret door.

So, I have to acknowledge there’s a slim chance that EJ could be in on Stephanie’s kidnapping. Maybe he suggested that Rolf hire Owen. Or EJ hired Owen to do one thing, knowing he would do another. That way, EJ’s hands are somewhat clean.

He might want revenge on Steve for continuing to investigate him. Or this whole thing could be an Owen and Dr. Rolf production. Owen could be, like last time, going rogue and acting alone against DiMera orders.

The Matrix 5 Update: Script Progress and Drew Goddard’s Vision

The Matrix 5 Update: Script Progress and Drew Goddard’s Vision

After years of relative silence surrounding The Matrix 5, the iconic sci fi franchise is once again showing signs of life. The next chapter in the groundbreaking cyberpunk universe is officially in development, and the biggest update comes directly from the man now steering the ship.

A New Creative Voice Enters the Matrix

Warner Bros. confirmed in 2024 that Drew Goddard would write and direct the fifth installment, marking the first time the franchise moves forward without a Wachowski at the helm. Goddard is best known for projects like The Cabin in the Woods and his genre bending storytelling sensibilities, making him an intriguing choice to guide the next evolution of the Matrix universe.

In a recent update, Goddard reassured fans that the project is very much alive. Speaking about the film’s status, he confirmed he is deeply immersed in the writing process.

“I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”

It is a simple statement, but it signals something important. The script is actively being crafted, and there is no rush to force production before the story is ready.

Learning From The Past

The most recent entry, The Matrix Resurrections, divided audiences upon release. While some appreciated its meta commentary and emotional core, others felt it struggled to recapture the lightning in a bottle that defined the original trilogy.

Because of that reception, Goddard taking his time with the screenplay may be exactly what the franchise needs. The Matrix has always thrived on bold philosophical ideas layered beneath action spectacle. If the next chapter is going to resonate, the foundation has to be strong.

What About Neo and Trinity

There is still no official confirmation regarding returning cast members. Keanu Reeves has previously expressed openness to returning under the right circumstances, but nothing has been formally announced.

There have also been rumors about characters introduced in Resurrections potentially continuing their arcs, including the possibility of Priyanka Chopra reprising her role as Sati. Chopra’s expanded role in the fourth film suggested future story potential, though her involvement in the fifth entry remains unconfirmed.

At this stage, it is unclear whether Matrix 5 will focus on legacy characters or pivot into a new generation navigating the digital illusion.

Where the Franchise Goes Next

One thing is clear. Warner Bros. is not abandoning one of its most influential properties. Instead, the studio appears to be giving Goddard the space to shape something meaningful rather than rushing a sequel to market.

The Matrix has always been about questioning reality, identity, and control. With technology and artificial intelligence evolving faster than ever in the real world, the themes that made the original films revolutionary feel more relevant today than they have in years.

For now, fans will have to wait until Goddard emerges from his writing cave. When he does, the next era of the Matrix could be closer than we think.

The Star Trek Connection To Star Wars You Never Noticed

The Star Trek Connection To Star Wars You Never Noticed

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Star Trek and Star Wars have always had a weirdly symbiotic relationship. George Lucas has previously stated that Star Wars would never have become a success if it hadn’t been able to stand on the shoulders of the earlier sci-fi series. Meanwhile, Star Trek never would have been able to make the leap to the big screen (a move that made this franchise relevant again) without the success of the first Star Wars movie.

Unsurprisingly, fans have often wanted to see some kind of official crossover between the two universes, one which would do cool things like pit the Starship Enterprise against a Star Destroyer. While we never got any kind of big-screen crossover like that, a forgotten episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation tried to bring these fictional worlds together. In the episode “Up the Long Ladder,” a computer screen casually mentions that vessels in the 22nd century would undertake diplomatic missions to Alderaan!

A Tale Of Two Colonies

“Up the Long Ladder” is a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode in which the Enterprise encounters two very different space colonies: one that previously forsook advanced technology in favor of an agrarian lifestyle and one that embraced 24th-century innovation. The second colony embraced it a little too hard, and Dr. Pulaski quickly surmises that everyone there is a clone. They need more viable genetic material and kidnap Riker and Pulaski to steal their DNA. However, Riker later destroys the clones that the colony starts cooking up, and Picard convinces them to merge with the first colony to create a more viable gene pool.

As you can tell, the only thing with any real Star Wars flavor here is the emphasis on clones. However, this Star Trek episode’s reference to a galaxy far, far away didn’t allude to the clone armies made famous by George Lucas. That makes sense because back when this episode was made, “the Clone Wars” was a throwaway line in the first Star Wars movie rather than the name of a beloved TV show that helped flesh out the prequels.

Set A Course To Alderaan, Maximum Warp

Instead, the Star Wars reference was snuck into the background. Both of these colonies were established in the 22nd century, and at one point, Picard is researching the different types of missions that ships of that era embarked upon. In the original footage of the scene where Riker visits the captain’s ready room, you can see that one of the mission categories for these vessels is listed as “Diplomatic Mission to Alderaan,” which was Leia’s cover story (she was secretly smuggling the Death Star plans) in the first Star Wars movie.

Now, this was never intended to seriously link Star Trek and Star Wars together, as much as fans from both franchises would love to see that. Instead, this was one of countless in-jokes snuck onto the set by people like Mike Okuda. For the most part, these jokes were only meant for the cast and crew, as such fine detail (a tiny screen with even tinier lettering) wouldn’t be easy to discern on the smaller, lower-definition televisions of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Use The Force, Jean-Luc

However, Star Trek: The Next Generation got an absolutely beautiful Blu-ray remaster, one which fans now watch (either through the discs or through streaming) on their huge, high-definition televisions. Most of those in-jokes for cast and crew are easy to read now, including the Mission To Alderaan in “Up the Long Ladder.” Accordingly, the name was changed for the remaster, and the fictional Alderaan was now replaced with the real planet Aldebran.

Just as the Death Star completely destroyed Alderaan, those remastering Star Trek: The Next Generation completely removed any references to Princess Leia’s homeworld. Still, those wanting to relive this tongue-in-cheek attempt to link Star Trek and Star Wars together can always dust off their old DVDs. If you don’t have them on hand, you can always give yourself a new task: “Diplomatic mission to the thrift store!”
