The Best Mystery Series of All Time Is Surging on Streaming 30 Years After It Ended
In the 1980s, male protagonists dominated TV detective mysteries. Tom Selleck was the epitome of cool on Magnum, P.I., as were Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas on Miami Vice, while Simon & Simon paired Gerald McRaney and Jameson Parker together as private investigator brothers. One small-screen detective, however, was not like the others. In 1984, Murder, She Wrote debuted on CBS, starring the near-60-year-old Angela Lansbury in the lead role of Jessica Fletcher. Today, 30 years after its last episode aired in 1996, Murder, She Wrote is still a big streaming hit, now topping the charts on the Apple TV store.
‘Murder, She Wrote’ Embraces a Unique Lead and Setting

Rather than being a seasoned detective, Jessica has never worked in law enforcement. Instead, she’s a famous writer of mystery novels and a retired English teacher. Not only is she a widow, but she’s also a strong, independent, and outspoken woman who refuses to be the damsel in distress when things get tough. She’s a bit eccentric, but not in an off-putting way. She’s always kind to her friends and strangers, making her easy to root for. Most compelling of all, Jessica uses what she’s learned from writing mysteries to solve them in real life. Rather than charging into investigations, she uses her disarming nature to interview suspects, then puts the pieces together before leaving it to law enforcement to take the bad guys down.
Another aspect that helps Murder, She Wrote stand out from the rest of the pack is its setting. So many TV mysteries take place in New York, Los Angeles, or another big city, but can you really imagine Angela Lansbury taking down gun-toting drug dealers on Miami Vice? Most episodes of the CBS show take place in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, where Jessica is from and where she has retired to. Cabot Cove is a small, picturesque town, the perfect place to spend your golden years, but there are also plenty of secrets — and murderers — for Jessica to uncover, provided you’re willing to suspend your disbelief about that.
‘Murder, She Wrote’ Is Cozy Despite Its Dark Subject Matter
Despite the darker implications of its premise, Murder, She Wrote is a cozy murder mystery series. In every episode, someone is killed by an unknown figure, and it’s up to Jessica to figure out what happened and who’s ultimately responsible. With a murder having taken place, the stakes are, of course, high, but Jessica’s life never hangs in the balance, and all of this death won’t traumatize her. Instead, it brings out the best of a character who becomes a Sherlock Holmes-type super sleuth. None of this goes to her head, either. Jessica is already rich and famous; now she’s seemingly the best detective in the world. Still, she’s the type of person who cares about her small-town friends more than anything else. Dr. Seth Hazlitt (William Windom) is a dear friend who always has her back and helps her out. So do the local law enforcement bosses, like Sheriff Amos Tupper (Tom Bosley) and later Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak).
Murder, She Wrote is predictable, but that’s not a criticism. It’s exactly why the series succeeded so many decades ago and why it’s still drawing in viewers today on streaming. It’s the television equivalent of a warm blanket, and a fun escape that doubles as family-friendly entertainment. What’s more is that other quirky, women-led mystery series, like Poker Face and iZombie, might not have ever existed if Jessica Fletcher hadn’t been solving murders in Cabot Cove 30 years ago.

Ezra Sosa‘s sister, Stephani Sosa, was involved in an incident on Dancing With the Stars: Next Pro that resulted in a contestant’s abrupt exit.
During the Monday, July 27, episode of the ABC show, Stephani accidentally hit Natalie Jolley in the face while they were practicing choreography as a group. Stephani didn’t notice that she swung her arm in Natalie’s face until the latter started to cry.
Natalie said she felt dizzy as one of her eyes started to swell shut. Stephani explained in a confessional that she didn’t even realize she had hurt Natalie.
“I don’t know what happened. The dance was moving so quickly, and Natalie got hit in the face,” she explained. “I just hate being the one that caused that. Like, I just feel horrible. I know she’s worked really hard to be here, and I hope she’s OK. … Sorry, I just care.”

Natalie was pulled out of rehearsals by production to get medical attention. An ambulance was eventually called once Natalie mentioned she couldn’t breathe through her nose.
“It hurts really bad,” she said before producers reassured her that the medical team would help, adding, “They’re going to give you some pain relief, OK? Just try to slow your breathing down.”
Natalie never returned to perform her group dance on DWTS: Next Pro. Instead, judge Shirley Ballas told the group that no one was going to be eliminated because Natalie’s health scare prevented her from continuing on the show.
“Tonight was the last dance for … neither of you,” she announced. “Following Natalie’s injury, she was not medically cleared to compete, and so she has been eliminated. This means you will all live to dance another day.”
Despite her abrupt exit, Natalie was given the chance to say goodbye.

Before DWTS: Next Pro premiered on ABC, Stephani spoke exclusively to Us about the pressure of competing on the show while her brother is already a pro on Dancing With the Stars. (Stephani was previously part of the DWTS troupe during season 33.)
“I honestly felt like I was treated like everyone else,” she shared earlier this month. “I definitely feel like the experience for me wasn’t easy. It was very hard, and I definitely feel like they expected a lot more from me because I was Ezra’s sister.”
Stephani noted she “had a lot more to prove,” adding, “I went in being like, ‘Yeah, I’ve done this. I am Ezra’s sister, but this is a new chapter.’ This is me proving myself fully and there are no excuses.”

Just last month, Stargate fans were dealt another major disappointment when Amazon reportedly scrapped its planned revival of the beloved sci-fi franchise. The series was set to be led by franchise veteran Martin Gero, who wrote for all three previous live-action Stargate shows. Reports initially suggested Amazon executives were concerned the project wouldn’t appeal beyond the franchise’s existing fanbase, although later reports indicated the cancellation stemmed from leadership changes within the company. While fans continue to hope for good news about Stargate‘s future, another ambitious space-set sci-fi series deserves their attention, especially since it comes from one of the franchise’s original creative minds. Premiering on February 1, 2023, The Ark returns for its third season in just 24 hours, nearly two years after the Season 2 finale. Set 100 years in the future, the Syfy series follows the crew of Ark One, a spacecraft carrying humanity’s hopes of survival after Earth becomes increasingly uninhabitable. When disaster strikes en route, the surviving crew must overcome impossible odds to find a new home for the human race.
Season 3 Looks Like ‘The Ark’s Strongest Yet
With just one day until The Ark returns, anticipation is building for Captain Sharon Garnet (Christie Burke) and the crew of Ark One as they continue humanity’s fight for survival. Season 2 concluded with Garnet receiving a mysterious distress signal from the Ross 128 system, while another cliffhanger viewers were left with was what the mysterious alien stone tablet discovered by Angus Medford (Ryan Adams) could mean for the colony’s future.
The upcoming season promises to expand the sci-fi mystery’s mythology even further. Speaking about Season 3 in a recent interview, Burke teased new technologies, deeper explorations of The Ark‘s origins, and “incredibly complicated” new villains. She also revealed that viewers will learn much more about Garnet’s backstory, while every major character will receive meaningful development. Perhaps most encouraging of all, she believes the new episodes surpass everything the sci-fi drama has done so far, saying that Season 3 “is genuinely our best season.”

CBS has always been able to rely on Paramount Plus to deliver some of the biggest streaming hits in the world, and right now, it’s Taylor Sheridan and his legendary Western empire making the network a fortune right now. Sheridan’s original neo-Western drama, Yellowstone, is once again the #1 show in the world on Paramount Plus, where it streams around the world except in America, where the show has found a home on Peacock courtesy of NBCUniversal. Kicking off the premiere Friday night on CBS is Sheriff Country, which will premiere its second season at 8. Following Sheriff Country Season 1 is Fire Country Season 5, which will air at 9 pm and lead directly into Boston Blue Season 2 at 10. New episodes will stream on Paramount+ the day after their premiere on CBS.

Only a few days before the massive slate of new releases on October 9, CBS is bringing back even more shows that Sunday, October 4. Kicking off the night is the NFL on CBS doubleheader, which will lead directly into the second season of Taylor Sheridan’s Marshals, arriving on October 4 at 8:30. Once Marshals goes off the air at 9:30, Tracker fans will step in to see what’s next with Colter Shaw (played by Justin Hartley) in Season 4 of the hit series. Both shows will move to 8 and 9, respectively, after the season premiere.

Marvel Studios has managed to pull off something that feels almost impossible in today’s internet age: keeping one of the biggest casting secrets completely under wraps.
As Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters this week, fans are still asking the same question they’ve been debating for more than a year:
Who is Sadie Sink actually playing?
The speculation reached another level after Sony released a new promotional clip featuring Sink, where her answer about her character is intentionally bleeped out, instantly sending social media into detective mode once again. While the clip offers no definitive answers, it is the latest example of Marvel leaning into one of the film’s biggest mysteries.
Marvel Isn’t Hiding It by Accident
Director Destin Daniel Cretton recently explained that the secrecy is completely intentional and for good reason.

Perhaps the safest prediction is Gwen Stacy.
Peter Parker is beginning a brand new chapter following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, making this an ideal opportunity to introduce one of Spider Man’s most iconic comic book characters.
With MJ and Ned moving on with their lives and no longer remembering Peter, a new relationship could naturally fit into this next phase of the franchise.

For months, the internet was convinced Sink would make her MCU debut as Jean Grey, finally bringing one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The theory made sense on paper. Sink has the look, the acting range, and Marvel is steadily building toward introducing the X Men.
However, Tom Holland recently appeared to pour cold water on that idea, saying, “Well, she’s not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool.” Whether fans believe Holland, or think he is simply protecting another Marvel secret, is another story entirely.

With Brand New Day positioned as a fresh beginning for Peter Parker after the world forgot his identity, introducing a significant new character makes perfect narrative sense.

Murphy continued his Entertainment Tonight interview by teasing a bit of the plot before returning to the cast of the upcoming season, with the reporter calling what he had previously described “like the Avengers.” According to him, “It is like the ‘Avengers.’ They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil.”
He continued, “So, it’s very fun, and as soon as I pitched it to them, many of them had said ‘no’ over the years, and they were like, ‘Well, okay, we’ve got to come back for that.” After that, he discussed Lange signing on for the season after leaving the show after the fourth season and vowing that she would never return.
Murphy shared, “But I pitched Jessica Lange, she was like, ‘Oh, sh-t, now I have to do it.” He added, “It’s all of them in one season, and it’s 13 episodes because it’s called 13.”
Toward the end of the interview, Murphy explained that he “spent many, many months and many years writing it. I wanted to do 13 in a special way. So, it’s cool. It’s fun.”
Ariana Grande Recently Dropped Out
As mentioned, season 13 of “American Horror Story” was announced in October 2025. According to USA Today, the cast, in addition to those previously named, included Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, and Ariana Grande.
However, according to Variety, the singer dropped out of the season due to scheduling conflicts with her ongoing tour and upcoming studio album, “Petal.” Her role would have been her “AHS” debut, serving as a reunion for her and Murphy following their work on “Scream Queens.”
Additionally, there have been other cast changes, with the additions of Paul Anthony Kelly, Joey Pollari, Berto Colon, and former “AHS” actors John Carroll Lynch and Mat Fraser.
Evan Peters Previously Discussed The Season
Evan Peters last appeared in “American Horror Story” during the show’s 10th season. Months after it was revealed that he’d be returning, he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in January 2026 while promoting another Murphy show, “The Beauty.”
The 39-year-old told the outlet, “First of all, it’s working with Ryan [Murphy] again, but second of all, he’s assembled the cast from all the different seasons.”
He continued, “It’s sort of an alumni, and we’re all getting back together to do this greatest-hits season. So we’ll see what he writes and what it brings. But just the chance to be able to work with Sarah [Paulson], Jessica, Kathy [Bates], Angela [Bassett] again and everybody involved. I’m interested to see what the scenes are and how it all plays out.”
When asked if he was surprised by Lange finally agreeing to return to the series, Peters said, “Yes! Yeah, Ryan knows how to have those dinners. He will get you in a second. I was definitely shocked, but thrilled, honestly.” Season 13 of the show premieres on September 24.
Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Shards’ Premieres In August
Murphy is one of the most prolific names in television, with several shows premiering each year. Now, his newest, “The Shards,” is set to debut on FX and Hulu on August 5. According to Deadline, the series comes from 20th Century Fox and Ryan Murphy Productions.
Notably, the new show is based on Bret Easton Ellis‘ 2023 novel of the same name. Its logline states, “Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession, and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence.”
