This 9-Part Netflix Weekend Binge Rewrites the Classic Western With an Unexpected Backdrop
Netflix may not be the king of Westerns, but the streamer is certainly a fan of frontier storytelling. Aside from hosting popular entries in the genre like 2021’s The Power of the Dog and all six seasons of Longmire, the platform has demonstrated an interest in the Old West’s biggest names, most recently with The Abandons and Territory. But while these might push the limits of Western drama and representation, their turn in the spotlight can also easily overshadow some of Netflix’s most underrated Western narratives. And out of all these unsung series, there’s one exemplary journey to the West that you really don’t want to miss — the 2023 Korean action drama Song of the Bandits.
Co-created by Han Jung-hoon and Hwang Jun-hyuk and set in Japanese-occupied Korea at the beginning of the twentieth century, Song of the Bandits is a unique entry into the Western canon that trades a classic Western locale for the lawless Gando region, a disputed border territory in present-day Northeastern China where bandits, suppressed locals, known as Joseons after the Joseon Dynasty which Japan overthrew–and Japan’s brutal colonial authorities clash in a seemingly endless series of disputes.
With relentless action, compelling drama, and fast-paced storytelling packed into its nine episodes, the Netflix series delivers a narrative powerful enough to inspire Song of the Bandits‘ most critical viewers, though the show ultimately failed to garner a broad following upon release. Still, with a talented cast and important themes, the series is a hidden gem of historical warfare and epic Western storytelling, making it more than deserving of a second look from fans of both.
What Is Netflix’s ‘Song of the Bandits’ About?
The series centers on Kim Nam-gil’s Lee Yoon, a former Korean slave who joined the Japanese military with his former master, Lee Gwang-il (Lee Hyun-wook), as the country’s colonial occupation began. Haunted by the atrocities he committed against Korean Independence fighters during his service, Lee Yoon departs from his current station in Episode 1 to journey north to Gando, where he hopes to surrender his life to former Independence General Choi Choong-soo (Yoo Jae-myung) as recompense for his crimes. Instead, the pair’s bitter reunion is soon interrupted when bandits attack the general’s village, leading to Lee Yoon single-handedly attacking the bandits’ headquarters to rescue a girl taken during the raid. At this point, the series comes into its name, as Choi Choong-soo suggests Lee Yoon can make amends for his mistakes by protecting the Joseon people instead of dying for his sins.
This suggestion leads the two men to form their own company of bandits in Episode 2, resulting in an homage to Western team-ups like The Magnificent Seven as they gather a band of desperate outlaws to protect Choi Choong-soo’s village and utilize guerrilla tactics against the Japanese. After Lee Yoon’s group successfully wipes out an entire Japanese garrison, the scope of their conflict only broadens as the series’ primary bandits vie with the remnants of Korea’s Independence Army, fellow outlaws, and the Japanese for control of railroad funds that are crucial to survival in Song of the Bandits’ main narrative arc. Moreover, matters are complicated further when Gwang-il, who goes by the name Major Miura Shohei in the army, is dispatched to protect the money, leading to a thrilling clash between both men’s conflicting cultures and classes.
‘Song of the Bandits’ Mixes Thrilling Action Sequences With K-Drama Politics
However, what really stands out in the Netflix series is how Jung-hoon and Jun-hyuk take advantage of traditional Western aesthetics to elevate their narrative. While Song of the Bandits’ politics and geography may feel unfamiliar to fans of traditional American Westerns, the series’ most exhilarating sequences unfold when the show blends recognizable Western tropes with the backstabbing intrigue of the arid Gando landscape. Lee Yoon’s gunfight at the end of Episode 1 is an especially brutal fight scene with all the one-sided, unflinching bitterness of Unforgiven, while Episode 4’s attack on an armored van mixes Song of the Bandits’ practical effects with the urgency of its political narrative. Likewise, Lee Yoon’s duel with Gwang-il in Episode 9 highlights the protagonist’s prowess in a classic desert standoff, showcasing the bandit’s quick draw like Val Kilmer in Tombstone to solidify Song of the Bandits’ place among the most thrilling entries in the genre.
Aside from violence, the series also faithfully portrays the independence and courage of Westerns’ archetypal heroines, with Seohyun’s Nam Hee-shin and Lee Ho-jung’s Eon-Nyeon proving especially compelling as the fight for the Japanese funds unfolds. As an assassin originally hired by Gwang-il to kill Lee Yoon, Eon-Nyeon’s subsequent acceptance of Lee Yoon and Choi Choong-soo as her chosen family provides a hard-won redemption arc to Gando’s cutthroat landscape, while Nam Hee-shin shines as a former Joseon noble attempting to support Korea’s Independence Army from within the Japanese government.
When Lee Yoon recognizes Hee-shin as the woman he loved while still a Japanese officer himself, the two grow closer and eventually deliver the funds to the Independence movement together, yet the pair’s relationship is complicated by the fact that Hee-shin is also engaged to Gwang-il. This entanglement creates a classic love triangle that balances the romantic politics of a riveting K-drama with Song of the Bandits’ much more deadly historical backdrop.
Netflix’s Underrated Western Is a Poignant Glimpse Into the Struggles of a Divided People
The political and cultural struggles depicted throughout Song of the Bandits are, without a doubt, the most moving aspects of the series, and Yoo Jae-myung, in particular, offers a heartbreaking performance as the worn veteran desperate to see his Joseon people freed. Choi Choong-soo’s apology to Eon-Nyeon at the start of Episode 6 encapsulates the solemn grief felt by Joseon survivors, as the once-invincible General confesses his generation should never have left their children with such a ruined state, but Song of the Bandits also goes to great lengths to demonstrate the cruelty of Japan’s occupying army. Although the main events of the series are only loosely based on Korea’s March First Movement of 1919, the series still doesn’t shy away from depicting the cost of imperialism on the perpetually victimized Joseon people.
The series’ recollection of the Gurye Incident, the moment from Lee Yoon’s past that resulted in the destruction of Choi Choong-soo’s village and the slaughter of his family, is particularly horrific, as are the summary executions of alleged freedom fighters carried out by the Japanese consulate in Gando regularly. Yet, as horrific as these war crimes and Gwang-il’s slaughter of civilians in Episode 5 are, Song of the Bandits also promotes a deeper message about social unity. Between Joseon bandits handing over Independence fighters to the Japanese for rewards and both Lee Yoon and Eon-Nyeon recounting how their parents were unjustly killed by their fellow Joseon, Song of the Bandits devotes equal time to describing how oppressed populations just as often turn on one another, ultimately advocating for forgiveness when Eon-Nyeon refuses to punish Choi Choong-soo for the murder of her parents.
Just as all series suffer from their own unique shortcomings, Song of the Bandits isn’t perfect. In particular, the show’s tone deviates from its dark beginnings in favor of a slower, more comedic atmosphere in later episodes, and the love triangle between Lee Yoon, Hee-shin, and Gwang-il isn’t suitably resolved by the finale (possibly in anticipation of a potential Season 2). Yet, with nonstop action sequences whose ringing steel and clashing bayonets provide the music of the series title, riveting gunfights, and chase scenes, and deep social commentary on what it means for a people to survive colonial oppression, Song of the Bandits is still a phenomenal television outing that proves audiences don’t need to flock to the most popular Westerns on streaming to enjoy some of the genre’s most unique stories.

Rob Rausch Refuses to Spill Details on New GF After ‘Traitors’ Win
‘Traitors’ Winner Rob Rausch
I Won’t Betray My Secret Girlfriend!!!
Published
TMZ.com
Rob Rausch kept a secret on ‘Traitors’ for months … and, it looks like he’s keeping a few more now the show’s over … holding the details of his relationship close to his chest.
We caught up with Rob — who attended the MAC Cosmetics Sephora Launch in New York City Monday night — and we had to ask about his relationship, which stunned fans of the show.
ICYMI … the ‘Love Island’ alum revealed on the Season 4 reunion last week he’s actually been dating a woman for a few months. Many fans thought he had some serious chemistry with fellow contestant Maura Higgins … but, while they are certainly friends, it was apparently all for the show.
If fans were hoping to learn more about Rob’s new flame, they’ll be sorely disappointed … Rausch says he’s not telling anything about his better half yet … because he doesn’t want the world in his business.
As for his relationship with Higgins — and whether she’s mad about him stringing her along — Rausch says there’s no ill will … even telling us Maura told him she’d have done the same in his situation.
The entire cast was cool despite Rausch betraying them all, he says … so, it sounds like no bridges burned.
But, if you want to know what Rob’s GF thought of his lying abilities on the program … don’t hold your breath!

The 3-Word DM Rob Rausch Sent Eric Nam After ‘The Traitors’ Concluded
Eric Nam made it until the very end of season 4 of “The Traitors“; however, he left the Scottish castle empty-handed after being betrayed by his co-star, Rob Rausch.
“If I had done that, I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself in that way,” Nam told producers during the finale episode. “It’s just a different line in the sand that we have. Money is great, but I think relationships are more important. And it doesn’t feel good.”
In a new interview, Nam got even more candid about what was going through his mind during the final moments of “The Traitors” finale, and even revealed the three-word DM he received from Rausch after filming concluded.

Was Eric Nam Expecting Rob Rausch To Betray Him During ‘The Traitors’ Season 4 Finale?

For those who might’ve missed it, Rausch was named the sole winner of season 4 of “The Traitors.” His victory came in the final moments of episode 10 after he and his “Love Island” ally, Maura Higgins, voted to send Olympian Tara Lipinski home, followed by Nam.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Nam discussed what was going through his mind during that moment, including whether he believed Rausch would turn on him.
“At that moment, there was no doubt. I was genuinely floored,” Nam said. “There’s a confessional where I was like, ‘Would he do this?’ And I was like, ‘No.’ And so there were a few times that crossed my mind, but I was like, no.”

How Was Nam Feeling After He Was Betrayed By Rausch, His Fellow Traitor, During The Final Moments Of The Finale Episode

Unfortunately for Nam, the unthinkable happened—something he said made him feel “really dumb” and “very sad.”
The only silver lining was that filming had officially wrapped, and Nam could return to his regular life. “It was three and a half weeks, and mentally and physically just really exhausting to constantly be on edge and constantly paranoid,” he said.
“It was a lot. So I was relieved to be done, but more than anything, I was like, “You know what? I had a really good time. This has been a lot of fun, but I’m so glad it’s over,” he added.

Inside The Three-Word DM Rausch Sent Nam After Betraying Him During ‘The Traitors’ Final Roundtable Ceremony

After Nam was eliminated from the series, he said he heard from Rausch through social media DMs a few days after. “… his literal words were, ‘My fault, G,’” Nam, who opened it but chose not to respond right away, said.
After some time, however, Nam said he had come around and had ended up connecting with Rausch, assuring the “Love Island” alum that everything was good between them.
“And then we didn’t talk for a long time until I guess recently because I was like, ‘What do we talk about?’” Nam joked.

Nam Wasn’t The Only Season 4 Contestant Who Left The Show Crestfallen

Nam wasn’t the only “Traitors” cast member who was disappointed by how things played out during the finale. According to a report from The Blast, Lipinski described herself as “heartbroken” when she realized she was being voted out by her fellow co-stars, specifically Higgins, whom she believed she successfully convinced to vote for Nam and Rausch moments before the final roundtable.
“I was for sure because we had a long conversation about it, and she was like, ‘I am all in. I’m all in. We are gonna get Eric. He’s gonna be so shocked what is gonna happen,’” Lipinski said. “And I went back to Johnny. I was like, ‘We did it! We just we won!’ And so at the roundtable, I was just blown away the first time. Because I believed it!”

She later explained feeling “bad” when she realized Higgins would soon learn Rausch’s true identity in the game.
“I didn’t know how it was gonna unfold exactly or how Rob would tell her, but I knew it was coming. So it was heartbreaking because at that point, I realized she just blindly trusted him and it was gonna be a huge, huge shock,” she said.
Why Kylie Kelce Was Annoyed With The Show’s Producers

Another report from The Blast details Kylie Kelce’s annoyance with “The Traitors” producers. During an episode of the “Green Light” podcast, Kylie discussed her mother-in-law, Donna Kelce’s, performance on the show and explained why she believed the 73-year-old received an unfair shake.
For those unfamiliar, Donna was the series’ first-ever “Secret Traitor,” meaning she had to plot and kill alone, while the show’s other Traitors, comprised of Candiace Dillard Bassett, Lisa Rinna, and, of course, Rausch, played together.
Donna was eliminated during episode 3 after the majority of the cast sniffed her out, something Kylie said “annoyed” her. “I’m a little annoyed that she was a Secret Traitor,” Kylie said. “For some reason, her being a Secret Traitor has irked me to a degree I can’t explain.”

“I wanted her to have her best chance to team up with people to really get a little sneaky with things,” she added. “If she were a Traitor, but not the Secret Traitor, I think she would have nailed it.”

Taylor Sheridan and Harry Potter Set to Go Head-to-Head Following Huge Paramount Announcement
After Netflix withdrew its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Skydance swooped in with a blockbuster move of its own. In a deal estimated at $110 billion, Paramount has agreed to acquire WBD — and now CEO David Ellison has confirmed the next big step. Combining the companies means sharing IPs after all, you’ve got the upcoming HBO series reboot of Harry Potter on one side, and the ever-expanding empire of Taylor Sheridan, including Yellowstone and its growing slate of spin-offs. So what does that mean for us?
It means the merging Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single, unified platform. Yes, that means cowboys and wizards are about to share the same digital ranch. During a call with investors, Ellison made it clear just how stacked this new mega-service would be.
“Our combined company will be home to many of the greatest, most recognizable and beloved franchises in the world, from ‘Harry Potter’ to ‘Top Gun,’ ‘Star Trek’ to ‘Looney Tunes,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ to ‘Yellowstone.’ This represents a tremendous opportunity, and we fully intend to invest in the creative engines of both studios, making them the most sought-after destination for the industry’s leading creative talent.”
Ellison also reassured investors that HBO’s identity won’t be diluted in the shuffle: “Our viewpoint is HBO should stay HBO,” he said, emphasizing that the brand’s creative autonomy will remain intact. He further pledged to maintain a robust theatrical slate — 15 films per year, per studio — meaning at least 30 theatrical releases annually.
What Does This Mean For HBO Max?
With a projected subscriber base exceeding 200 million, the combined service would instantly become one of the biggest players in the streaming wars. It’s the latest example of industry consolidation, following moves like the bundling of Disney+ and Hulu.
The merger brings together film, TV, and news assets across Paramount and WBD — a move that could fundamentally reshape the Hollywood ecosystem. For creators, it could mean one mega-destination for premium content. For viewers, it could mean one app housing everything from Game of Thrones to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to closely review the acquisition over concerns about media concentration and competition. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has already vowed to scrutinize the deal. Industry insiders are also warning of potential job cuts and restructuring as the companies combine operations.
There are additional concerns around editorial independence, particularly given the Ellison family’s political ties and the increasing scrutiny surrounding major news divisions like CBS and CNN. Ellison, however, struck a confident tone.
He described the merger as “pro-competition, pro-consumer, and pro-creative community,” adding that it will “create a stronger Hollywood and global production ecosystem, one that expands consumer choice and unlocks opportunities for creative talent.”
Stay tuned to Collider for all the latest as huge companies continue to merge into one superbeing.

8. Loose and Flowy: Ruffle details elevate this blue crewneck-style top from basic tee to dressy blouse in one move. The flowy fit is comfortable without looking sloppy.
9. Everyday Essential: When you need a simple base layer that still looks polished on its own, this loose-fit solid tunic delivers. The dressy cut keep it from reading as pajamas.
10. Dress up or Down: A loose, drapey silhouette does wonders for arm coverage because the fabric floats rather than hugs. This red blouse looks expensive and professional enough for client-facing days.
11. Designer-Looking: Double-tiered ruffles and half-bell sleeves give this coffee brown tunic real visual interest. The V-neck and loose fit keep it flattering.
12. Rich Mom-Style: The chiffon fabric gives this beige V-neck blouse a loose, drapey quality that plain cotton can’t match. It reads dressy enough for the office yet lightweight for spring and summer weather.
13. Red Hot: Wear this red button-down blouse to your next presentation, and you’ll command the room. The three-quarter sleeves keep you polished, and the bold color says you mean business.
14. Bust-Friendly: Bored with V-necks? The square neckline on this navy blouse frames your face and collarbone — not to mention it’s super flattering on larger busts.
15. Effortless and Chic: The half-bell sleeves on this red V-neck tunic flare out just enough to create a feminine shape around your arms. The ruffle detail adds movement that catches the light nicely.
16. Capsule Wardrobe Necessity: One versatile black blouse can carry half your wardrobe. This one pairs easily with jeans or dress pants, and the bell sleeves with ruffles add enough detail to skip the jewelry.
17. Quite the Charmer: The pleated V-neck on this three-quarter-sleeve blouse creates a textured, dimensional look that plain fabric can’t pull off. Three-quarter sleeves and a dressy cut round out a solid work top.

Meghan Markle’s Burgundy Slip Dress Is a Hosts’ Dream
Us Weekly has affiliate partnerships. We receive compensation when you click on a link and make a purchase. Learn more!
Meghan Markle is looking as chic as ever. While the Duchess of Sussex always looks effortlessly luxe, I was star struck after seeing her in an Instagram photo posted by As Ever, Markle’s lifestyle brand. The A-lister was the epitome of ‘hostess with the mostess,’ serving sparkling wine that’s “finished with a few fresh raspberries for garnish,” and this is all while wearing the slip burgundy dress of my dreams.
The entertaining expert couldn’t look more regal while wearing the Heidi Merrick Marion Slip Dress. Markle styled the getup in the most sophisticated and understated way with minimal gold jewelry, including a choker necklace, single bangle bracelet and dainty wedding bands. Despite the no-frills aesthetic, the designer dress is actually $495 — so we found a similar style that delivers Markle’s look for $445 less.

Slip dresses are no muss, no fuss — just easy elegance. This under-$50 satin midi slip embodies that, featuring a V-neckline and a cowl-style back with a tie-up design that’s effortlessly rich. You’ll also appreciate the gathered bust detail that accentuates the chest and the relaxed yet fitted design that shows off your hourglass figure.
I adore the rich burgundy color of Markle’s satiny dress, which is stunning for evening wear. However, if red isn’t your favorite color, you’re in luck! This Amazon version comes in over 20 to choose from, including brown, navy and champagne.
If you’re skeptical about the quality of the dress, real-life shoppers can’t say enough good things about it. One reviewer said that it “looks much more expensive than it is, and is beautiful on.” They even shared that the material is “thick enough to cover any problem areas” and the seams “are somewhat angled, giving more of an hourglass appearance.” Another noted that the dress is a “great find for the price,” with the main caveat from commenters being that the gown notably runs small. A small fix: Size up!
Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or attending a wedding, you can look like royalty on a budget. This under-$50 slip dress perfectly mirrors Markle’s simple yet elegant aesthetic, and is a statement in and of itself.

Hillary Clinton Points Finger at Donald Trump in Epstein Deposition
Hillary Clinton Epstein Deposition
Trump’s Prior Conduct Might Be Relevant!!!
Published
c-span
Hillary Clinton didn’t hold back when asked about President Donald Trump during her Epstein deposition last week … pushing to have him testify under oath, because he’s got a laundry list of bad behavior and past connections with the dead convicted pedophile.
Check out the footage released by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released Monday — Clinton says given that Trump’s all over the Epstein Files and has been found guilty of a myriad of crimes … he should “absolutely” be brought in for questioning.
And she doesn’t let people forget about his past trials and convictions … she reminds the committee that he’s been found civilly liable for sexual assault by a jury of his peers and convicted on 34 counts of falsified business records in relation to covering his relations with an escort … which was election interference.
As you know, Hillary and former President Bill Clinton were deposed separately last week. Bill was adamant he had no idea Epstein was up to no good … claiming if he did know what crimes he was committing, he would have turned him in himself. Hillary, meanwhile, maintains that she never even met him.
Trump has repeatedly washed his hands of Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Trump has said he kicked JE out of his circle when he betrayed him by hiring people who had worked for him at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
Friday, Trump said he did not enjoy seeing former President Clinton deposed, though he added … “But they certainly went after me a lot more than that.”

More On Diddy’s Prison Release Updates & His Fight To Appeal His 4-Year Sentence
As The Shade Room previously reported, Diddy’s initial prison release date was announced in October 2025. At the time, it was reported that he would be behind bars until May 8, 2028. However, it was also noted that the date was subject to change and could be altered if he displayed good behavior.
Then, in November 2025, it was reported that Diddy’s prison release date was pushed back until June 4, 2028, per The Shade Room. At the time, Page Six reported that he was involved in an unauthorized three-way phone call and participated in illegal alcohol consumption. However, his rep denied the “rumor.”
“As with any high-profile individual in a new environment, there will be many rumors and exaggerated stories throughout his time there — most of them untrue. We ask that people give him the benefit of the doubt, the privacy to focus on his personal growth,” the rep stated at the time.
In December 2025, Diddy and his legal team filed an appeal against his four-year prison sentence, per The Shade Room. Furthermore, his team reportedly demanded his immediate release and argued that prosecutors failed to prove their case against him. Additionally, they reportedly argued that Judge Arub Subramanian issued a sentence that violated Diddy’s constitutional rights.
Per Page Six, in February, prosecutors opposed Diddy’s appeal. As The Shade Room previously reported, Diddy was convicted of transportation to engage in prostitution charges in July 2025. Furthermore, he was acquitted on sex trafficking and racketeering charges after an eight-week trial.
