5 Things That Make a Cardigan Frumpy (Or Not)

Are cardigans frumpy? What makes a cardigan look modern in 2026? Readers had a spirited discussion the other day, and I thought it deserved more discussion.

Are Cardigans Frumpy? My Take

My own take is that cardigans are usually utilitarian first and stylish second: they’re what many of us reach for when the office AC is blasting, not necessarily the thing making the outfit.

I love a good cardigan for coziness… but

  • if you’re looking to add authority or polish, a blazer, sweater jacket, or lady jacket will usually get you there faster (I’ve linked to our latest roundups for all; I’ll also add our top picks below)
  • if you want to look stylish, intentional styling matters much more with cardigans than with blazers
  • if you want to look trendy, there’s definitely a very particular cardigan silhouette having a moment right now (longer, flared sleeves, softer structure, slightly cropped proportions)… this cardigan comes to mind…
  • and yes, some cardigan trends are firmly in the past at this point (waterfall cardigans immediately come to mind) (pictured at top)

Five Things that Make a Cardigan Frumpy (or Not)

Structure

Ultimately I think that the more structure a cardigan has, the less frumpy it looks. Stronger shoulders, a defined placket, a heavier knit — all will be more stylish than a limp tissue-weight cardigan with no shape and droopy pockets. Jardigans, lady jackets, sweater blazers and schoolboy cardigans all excel here.

Proportion & Intention

A lot of times — especially if the cardigan is literally the one you keep at the office for when you’re cold — the proportions will look off. The sweater will be too long or short for the outfit, the wrong weight for the season, or the sleeves or collar will peek out of it in a funny way because you didn’t look in the mirror, you just threw it on because you were cold. And that’s fine! But.. all of those things contribute to that “frumpy” feeling.

Personally I find it really hard to wear a cardigan with a dress because the proportion always feels a bit off to me. I’ve liked this option from Nic & Zoe in the past, but I don’t think it’s winning any style awards.

Another problem: proportions have changed wildly in recent years; the cardigan you’re keeping at work may not be the best for those newer proportions. For example: wide legged pants look much better with shorter cardigans, whereas ankle pants look better with the longer cardigans we saw a few years ago.

Ultimately, a sweater that’s worn with intention (whether that’s draped over shoulders, buttoned as a top, styled monochromatically, or worn in place of a blazer — reads differently from “emergency cardigan because I’m cold.”

Fabric, Hardware, and other Details

Small details do a lot of heavy lifting with cardigans. An interesting pattern, a mixture of fabrics, a lush fabric, stylish buttons, cabled knit, etc — all of that can elevate a cardigan. Looking above at some of the more expensive cardigans we’ve posted recently, you can see how the small details really do elevate it. I’d say there’s also an element of intention to all of them, at least as styled.

Like I mentioned above, some cardigan trends are definitely in the past. (To be fair, almost every silhouette eventually has its moment in the wilderness, at least temporarily.) Some examples from our own archives…

  • waterfall cardigans feel very dated to me
  • I still wear my Circle cardigans (so cozy!) but they’re more of an “around the house” kind of thing
  • oof the shawl neckline
  • honestly I’m still wearing longer cardigans like the fourth striped one also — but they’re a neutral color and I’m not trying to make any style statements with them

Comparison Points

If someone says a cardigan is frumpy, what are they comparing it to?

For example, I know a lot of readers in the past have said that they keep fleece jackets at the office in case they’re cold — I’d still argue that a cardigan is a better option than that, but know your office (and your style). A cardigan may not earn fashion points compared to a blazer, but compared to the office fleece? It’s still doing pretty well.

So Can I Wear Classic Cardigans or Not in 2026?

For example, the ones that look like these:

My answer: YES, absolutely, whether as an integral part of your outfit or the cardigan you keep at work. But:

  • keep a full-length mirror in your office so you can check out how your outfit looks with the cardigan if it’s one you keep at the office
  • cardigans (particularly 100% cotton ones) can get stretched out pretty easily — so don’t forget to launder it
  • really think about styling the cardigan and how it fits proportionally with the other clothes you’re wearing

Ultimately, I think you need to distinguish “practical wardrobe workhorse” from “style trendsetter.” Some of the trendier cardigan silhouettes (cough, extra-long flared sleeves or cropped styles) may not work for every office or every working woman… but nobody would call them frumpy. (At least, not in 2026.)

Meanwhile, the classic cardigan remains a classic precisely because it’s so practical: easy to keep at the office, throw in your bag, layer over a blazer, or pull on when the conference room AC is set to “arctic tundra.” And yes, some classic cardigans can absolutely look chic, polished, or modern, especially when the proportions, styling, and fabric feel intentional.

But let’s be honest: many of us are also wearing them because chattering teeth tend to interrupt workflow.

And honestly? That’s fine too.

Lady Jackets

Some of our latest favorite lady jackets for work in 2026 still include knit jackets such as those from ba&sh, MMLF, or Boden… but in general the style has gotten much more structured, closer to a Chanel-style jacket for work. On the budget side of things, check out J.Crew, Tuckernuck (XXS-XXXL), J.Crew Factory, and Ann Taylor… on the splurgey side check out L’Agence, Veronica Beard, St. John, and (of course!) Chanel.

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials professional women are supposed to have in their closets (like work dresses!) , but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

It has always been surprisingly hard to find the perfect work dress — and then the pandemic hit, and fashion went a bit off the rails. For a few years there it felt like every “work dress” was either a prairie dress, a silky slip dress, or something with enough ruffles and volume to make it difficult to wear under a blazer. Thankfully, workwear seems to be settling down. In 2026, we’re seeing polished sheath dresses, practical shirt dresses, modern midi dresses, and washable workhorses that actually make sense for professional wardrobes.

(We try to keep this roundup updated — other more specific dress roundups we’ve done include plus size work dresses, work dresses with pockets, day to night work dresses, fit and flare work dresses, work dresses with matching blazers, colorful sheath dresses for work, work dresses with built-in shapewear, and (over at CorporetteMoms), the best maternity dresses for work.)

Editor’s note: Corporette has covered workwear since 2008, and we’ve maintained some version of this roundup of the best work dresses for nearly two decades. For each update, we review reader favorites, current inventory, workplace trends, and the brands professional women consistently recommend to each other.

Executive Summary: The Best Work Dresses in 2026

What Makes a Dress Appropriate for Work

For my $.02, here’s what I think makes a great dress for work:

  • thick enough straps or sleeves that there is no chance of bra straps showing through — look for lingerie snaps inside dresses to keep your bra in place, or ask your tailor to add them if you have a problem with falling bra straps
  • a work-appropriate length that isn’t too trendy — usually within an inch of your kneecap (here was our last discussion on when a dress is too short for work
  • if there’s a slit, it doesn’t rise too high when you’re seated (sit down and do the mirror test to make sure!)?
  • a fit that is tailored and polished but not “bodycon” — no one wants to work long hours in skintight clothing!
  • pockets, which can be great (because, well, pockets!) but often add a lot of bulk and detract from the sleekness (I still almost always want pockets, but that’s me.)
  • sleeves, which can also be a double-edged sword — sleeveless styles will inevitably layer better underneath cardigans and blazers. That said, sleeveless looks are not appropriate for every office — so know your office culture if you plan on wearing a sleeveless dress by itself.

Where to Find Great Dresses for Work in 2026

Ever since the pandemic the phrase “work dress” has been all over the map — rufflepuff! shirt dress! maxi dress! — and it feels like we’re finally getting back to a good place where it feels like things are starting to normalize a bit.

In general, broad strokes, if you’re on the hunt for good dresses for work, I’d check some of these stores:

If you’re on the hunt for more conservative, traditional dresses for work, these are some of our long-standing favorite dresses…

Editor’s Picks for the Best Dresses for Work in 2026

The Best Affordable Work Dress: Quince

A woman in a beige cap-sleeve dressA woman in a beige cap-sleeve dress

This short-sleeved dress from Quince looks like a great summer basic at a fantastic price. As Elizabeth noted, “I know cap sleeves aren’t for everyone, but I find them to be one of the better options for wearing under a jacket or sweater.”

In addition to beige, the dress also comes in your classic black, charcoal, and navy if you’re looking for something a little more traditional.

The dress is $49.90 at Quince. It comes in sizes XS–XL (ooh, and they expanded well beyond the original colors!)

Other great options in the affordable section include Ann Taylor, Lands’ End, and Amazon sellers like this, this, or this. You can also look to long-running reader favorites for affordable dresses like Maggy London and Eliza J (also love this Anne Klein dress.)

The Best Traditional Sheath Dress: Theory

black sheath dress with slight flareblack sheath dress with slight flare

Sheath dresses disappeared for a while but they’re coming back. In 2026 they’re a bit longer than in previous years, and there are less darts and stitching for an overall simpler silhouette. This Theory sheath with a slight flare exemplifies the look, and because it’s in their Admiral Crepe you can get a number of matching pieces (including blazers).

Other great traditional sheath dresses include from options from M.M.LaFleur, BOSS, Black Halo, Hobbs, and St. John. On the more affordable side of things, Ann Taylor, J.Crew, T. Tahari, and Lands’ End are reliable spots.

The Best Washable Work Dress: M.M.laFleur

Readers love M.M.LaFleur’s Origami Tech line because it’s washable, wrinkle free, and in general is great for travel, summer, and more. Their relaxed Maaza dress has been around for a while, but they keep coming out with new colors.

Other more relaxed dresses to consider: Tuckernuck’s Jackie dress; Boden’s Ottoman line of dresses is also usually pretty relaxed (also washable!).

The Best Midi Work Dress: J.Crew

black work dress with midi lengthblack work dress with midi length

J.Crew’s Mathilde dress has been around for a year or two now, but it still feels fresh and a really easy choice if you just want to throw on one piece in the morning and go. I love that it has sleeves, also. For midi dresses I think the hemming is so important so I also love that they come in petites and tall sizes.

If you’re looking for more with this midi length, Me & Em and Theory are both flush with midi dresses for work at the moment; Nordstrom’s Halogen line also has a nice selection. Another great spot for midi dresses is our next spot…

The Best Modern Work Dress: Modern Citizen

black work dressblack work dress

I’ve admired Modern Citizen’s Fei dress for a few years, and they just came out with new colors. I like that this isn’t quite a wrap dress, a sheath dress, or a flared dress, but some combination of all of them. They come in regular and petite sizes XS-1X, and the dress is also machine washable.

If you’re hunting for more modern work dresses, COS has a quick-moving selection but is usually on point; Banana Republic and Spanx have also had more modern silhouettes for work dresses.

The Best Shirt Dress: Tuckernuck

A woman wearing a red short sleeve collared long dress with silver heelsA woman wearing a red short sleeve collared long dress with silver heels

Tuckernuck’s Chloe dress hits the sweet spot between midi dress, shirt dress, and work dress — and I like that it keeps coming out in new colors. It’s $298 and available in sizes XXS-4X in six different colors (but no petites, alas).

Looking for something similar? Check Talbots, J.McLaughlin, and Eliza J.

Frequently Asked Questions about Work Dresses

Do I need to cut the vent on this new sheath dress?

Yes. If your dress has a vent with a small X-shaped stitch holding it closed, that stitch is usually intended to be removed before wearing.

What should I wear underneath a work dress?

Many women prefer slip shorts (like these), shapewear (like this), a half slip (like this), or hosiery (like these) depending on the fabric and fit of the dress.

Do I need to wear pantyhose with a work dress?

Know your office — if it is extremely conservative (or you have a Big Day coming up in court or with the board) then the answer is “maybe.” But most modern offices no longer require pantyhose.

(You may want to check out our guide to pantyhose!)

How should I care for a work dress that’s part of a suiting set?

If your dress matches a blazer or other suiting pieces, dry-clean the pieces together whenever possible so they age and fade at the same rate.

What length dress is most professional for work?

We’ve talked about this a lot in the past, and as always the answer comes down to “know your office.” In general, most professional women find that dresses hitting around the knee or slightly below are the most versatile for work. Very short hemlines can read too casual or party-oriented, while maxi dresses often feel too vacation-oriented for traditional offices. When in doubt, observe what mid-level and senior women in your office are wearing.

Can I wear a sleeveless dress to work?

As readers discussed in our most recent post about whether sleeveless dresses are appropriate for work, the answer for most offices these days is, “yes” — although you may still want a layer because conference rooms and office A/C can be notoriously cold. (We just talked about things that make a cardigan frumpy, and we’ve also rounded up other toppers like sweater blazers, lady jackets, and blazers you can wear as separates.

Are sheath dresses still in style for work?

Sheath dresses are a classic and will always be appropriate for work. While fashion has shifted toward looser silhouettes, midi lengths, and fit-and-flare styles in recent years, a well-fitting sheath dress remains one of the easiest and most professional options for the office.

So if you like them and feel confident in them, go for it. If they seem too fussy, then you can go with one of the many other styles of dresses popular right now for work.

What shoes should I wear with a work dress?

The most conservative answer here is “a heel you can walk in” (here’s our most recent roundup, as well as our Guide to Comfortable Heels). That said, many offices today are perfectly accepting of flats like ballet flats, loafers, Mary Janes, oxfords, and boots paired with dresses.

As always, know your office. I would hesitate before wearing very high heels (4″+), casual sandals, or highly trend-driven looks unless I’d seen other women in my office wearing them successfully. When in doubt, choose polished shoes that complement the formality of your dress.

These Tuckernuck heels made me smile — they have such a joyful vibe!

If you tend to wear a lot of neutrals in the summer (black, white, neutral), these won’t be a stretch to wear at all — you could also obviously wear them with one of the colors in the rainbow-colored raffia (probably pink, but try them with orange, red, and blue also).

Not a fan of the colors? They also come in black.

The shoes are $265 at Tuckernuck, available in sizes 6-11.

Summer Sale Finds - Julia Berolzheimer

Summer sale season is my favorite excuse to revisit the pieces that have been lingering in the back of my mind. The colorful printed dress, the great summer bag, the embroidered something I keep coming back to.

What I love most about summer sales is the timing. There is still so much season left. Vacations are approaching, weekends are filling up, evenings are slow and golden, and there is plenty of time for a great find to earn its place in the wardrobe. It feels less like planning ahead and more like adding something new to the summer that is already unfolding.

Below are the pieces that stood out most to me this week. Some are practical, some are purely for fun, but every one of them feels like summer.

Frugal Friday: Double Layer Scoopneck Top

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Old Navy is coming in hot this week with a whole bunch of work-appropriate tees. When I’m looking for a t-shirt to wear to the office, I’m usually looking for something with a substantial fabric and a shape that isn’t too boxy. These double-layer scoop neck tops totally fit the bill. With ten colors to choose from and the typical range of Old Navy sizes, there’s something for everyone. Wear one under a blazer for a comfy business casual look.

The tops are $15.99 today and come in sizes XXS-4X, XST-XXLT, and XSP-XXLP.

Hunting for opaque white T-shirts for work? As of 2026, we’d suggest checking the double-layer lines from Boden, Express, Old Navy, and Hobbs, as well as great sources for basic Pima cotton such as Uniqlo, COS, L.L.Bean, Everlane, Banana Republic, and Talbots. (This $268 tee also gets great reviews for opacity, as do these two more affordable options — and Elizabeth swears by this tee under $30!)

I was browsing through Sarah Flint’s website and noticed this beautiful scarf waist belt — I don’t remember seeing such a nice way to create a scarf belt.

I’ve always admired the creative ways people use scarves — tying them on handbags, wearing them as tops, wrapping them around ponytails, turning them into belts — but most of those ideas seem to require either a lot of practice or a YouTube tutorial. This feels like a much more foolproof option.

But this is really clever — it’s a solid leather piece that has numerous holes in it, designed for you to thread a 90cm scarf through it. The leather piece is reversible so it’s two pieces in one: there is a calf leather version with cream on one side and a tan “saddle” on the other side, a navy and red version, and the pictured black and cognac. There’s also a nice version with two textures, black calf on one side and deep espresso suede on the other (part of their Mary Orton collab).

Scarves of course are classic, but I don’t feel like they’ve been trendy for a long time — and I think that’s changing. I’d love to hear which are your favorite scarves!

The belt piece is $260-$265; Sarah Flint also has a nice scarf collection.
