All White, All Texture – Julia Berolzheimer

All White, All Texture - Julia Berolzheimer

Outfit Details: Zimmermann Dress, Miu Miu Flats (similar here and here), Loewe Sunglasses

Summer whites always feel like the answer to August plans, whether that’s a backyard dinner, a barbecue, or one of the last long weekends before everyone dives into full fall mode. “No white after Labor Day” never felt convincing, and I’m not one to follow fashion rules anyway. When an outfit works, it works, and it doesn’t need permission.

Head-to-toe white looks best with some texture and dimension to it. Maybe it’s a lace dress with enough detail to stand on its own, or a coordinating set with crochet hem. A light-as-air cotton voile blouse, paired back to a pant with lived-in sensibility. Summer whites ask for woven flats, sunglasses, and bare arms now, then those same pieces become the perfect canvas for a textured knit or quilted jacket come cooler days.

I was excited to see that this necklace is a bestseller at J.Crew — personally I was never a fan of the “tiny dainty necklace” era.

I’m featuring the gray because it was the only color shown on a model, but it also comes in green, burgundy, light blue, red, navy, and black. I feel like the black one would be a lovely basic, but any of the other ones would be great for a pop of color above a crewneck or peeking out from an open collar.

The necklaces are $49.50-59.50 at J.Crew.

There was an interesting Buzzfeed story recently that collected Reddit comments about what “pink taxes” women pay. The entire roundup is worth a read, but I thought we might be able to expand the discussion here. What pink taxes do you see in your life, and what do you do about them? (Avoid them, shake your fist at the patriarchy, try to change them?)

In case you don’t feel like clicking on the Buzzfeed article (am I the only one who can barely get to the bottom of the article on mobile?) some of my favorite examples include:

  • “Our clothes often being flimsy, paper thin, and needlessly cropped compared to men’s, but yet also costing more.”
  • “Prescription drugs tested/developed for men that are less effective for women.”
  • The first thing that comes to mind for me is just time. To maintain a certain (average) level of grooming, I have to invest at least an hour every day. It’s apparent when we observe how long it takes a typical man vs. a woman to get ready, especially for a special occasion. Even on an average day, I’m annoyed by the fact that I get approximately an hour less sleep so I can look nice for work and feel more respected by the men around me.”
  • “Menopause treatment. More women are going on to HRT, but big pharma won’t increase production of estrogen patches. So women have interruptions in their care.”
  • And finally, “The one where I get paid less than my male peers.”

Some of these aren’t pink taxes in the traditional “women consumers pay more” sense, but they are a “tax on being a woman” in money, time, labor, and career capital. We’ve talked about the demands on women’s time and labor — and not just the invisible mental load that mothers end up carrying. At work, we’ve talked about being the “office mom,” getting stuck with office housekeeping, and taking on other non-promotable tasks.

Even before I was married or a mother, I was the only one in my group who seemed to remember when our shared secretary’s birthday was or when/where a going-away party was. I also felt like I had to push back against the idea that I was the one who needed to procure a card for my peers to sign.

And yes, some of these aren’t technically “pink taxes” at all — so feel free to argue with the premise! What “taxes on being a woman” do you notice most in your own life? Which ones do you willingly pay, which ones make you rage, and which have you found ways to opt out of?

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I fully recognize that these Carolina Herrera pants may fall into the “Ladies Who Lunch” style of dressing, but it doesn’t make me love them any less. The print is gorgeous, the cut is perfect, and if I had four figures to drop casually on a pair of trousers, they would be in my closet immediately.

For the office, I’d try them with a silk blouse or a crisp navy blazer if the coordinating cardigan felt like a little too much look.

The pants are $1,490 at Bloomingdale’s and come in sizes 2-10.

On the Scene: Style at the 2nd Annual Vineyard Icon Awards on Martha’s Vineyard, Honoring Sylvia Rhone

Published

Sylvia Rhone Vineyard Icon Gaultier

The Vineyard Icon Awards returned to Martha’s Vineyard for its second year, drawing a crowd of guests dressed in the island’s signature blend of polish and ease. The event was founded by Erin Goldson, a fifth-generation Martha’s Vineyarder whose late father is buried on the island, and whose grandmother still lives there year-round. Vineyard Icon was created to celebrate individuals whose impact reaches beyond the island’s shores, recognizing leaders, creators, and changemakers who embody the spirit of excellence the Vineyard has long been known for.

Among this year’s honorees was music executive Sylvia Rhone, who commanded the room in a Jean Paul Gaultier printed mesh gown, paired with gold hoop earrings and stacked bangles.

Guests followed suit in a palette built around the island’s summer spirit: breezy florals, tropical prints, crisp stripes, and jewel tones, paired with woven totes, mini top-handle bags, and statement earrings throughout.

The event, held at Farm Neck Golf Course, once again proved that Vineyard style is less about formality and more about ease, color, and confidence.

Amazon Sundays: Late Summer Tablescapes

Amazon Sundays: Late Summer Tablescapes

This week’s Amazon Sunday centers on tableware, and in Charleston, where warm evenings last well past Labor Day, outdoor meals are still part of the routine. Printed linens, colorful glasses, scalloped dishes, and playing cards all feel right on a table set for the ease of summer, but earn their spot well beyond.

Chocolate gingham, tortoise flatware, paisley print linens, and colored taper candles bring notes of fall without changing the whole table. If cooler air comes earlier, those pieces make the transition easy. If it stays warm, they still look right outside from lunch through dinner.

Browse the full edit below, and explore more in our JB Amazon Shop and Amazon Storefront, refreshed weekly.

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

I’ve been liking this crochet sweater skirt from Ann Taylor recently, which are not words I thought I would say a) ever and b) especially not during summer. And yet I’ve worn it several times out with friends. I like dressing it up with black and cobalt blue accents (I know, so 2010s of me) and really casual shoes — my Birks one day, my Converse the next. Of course, it would also look nice if I wanted to pull out actual heels or nicer shoes… perhaps with a navy top. Yes.

In any event: the sweater skirt is at Ann Taylor for $139, available in classic and petite sizes; it apparently is a bestseller right now so I’m not alone in really liking it.

Cart Confidential Vol. 44 – Julia Berolzheimer

Cart Confidential Vol. 44 - Julia Berolzheimer

My cart always knows a season is turning before the weather forecast at home does. Paisley, jacquard, leopard, and jewel-tone shades of orange, pink, and blue are already pulling me toward fall. A pleated satin belt, bright trousers, and structured suede bag all have that slightly richer, more decorative feeling I start craving this time of year.

For the girls, I’m drawn to that same mix of print and detail in a sweeter direction. Tiny florals, cherries, scalloped pockets, a patterned jacket, and little fringe boots make the start of a new school year feel especially fun to dress for.

The same color and decoration is finding its way into the house. A pleated pink chair, burlwood tissue box, and swirled glass vase give familiar corners a richer, more expressive presence ahead of fall.
