How to Dress Like James Delaney from Taboo

How to Dress Like James Delaney from Taboo

If you’ve watched Taboo you’ll know that the James Delaney inspired look is hard to forget. Tom Hardy plays him with a quiet power that pulls you in from the very first scene. He is no doubt very intimidating but a big part of that impact comes from the way he’s dressed.

A long black coat. A tall black hat. Heavy boots. Dark gloves. That is it. No color, no decoration, nothing flashy. And somehow it is one of the most dominant looks in the past of television. People have been trying to copy the James Delaney outfit ever since the show came out and in this blog, I will show you exactly how to do it.

First, A Little Background on the Show and the Character

Taboo is set in London in 1814. James Delaney comes back from Africa after being gone for over ten years. Everyone thought he was dead. He returns to take over what his late father left behind and almost immediately, powerful people want him gone.

The world he walks into is Dark Victorian menswear, dirty and dangerous. This is not the clean, polite London you might imagine from history books. This is the docks. Mud, fog, crime and money moving through dirty hands. And Delaney fits right into that world not because he blends in but because his presence fills every room he enters.

His costume was designed to match that world. The show’s production team made a clear choice to keep him away from the fancy customized look that other period dramas love. No bright colors, no silk cravats and no polished gentleman energy. Just black, heavy, worn-in clothing that looks like it has been through something.

Why Everything Is Black

This is worth talking about because it is not just a style choice. In 1814 London, wearing all black as a man meant something. It was the color of mourning. It was what priests wore. It was what people on the edges of society wore. Respectable gentlemen of that time actually wore quite a bit of color, brown, navy, dark green and burgundy. All black was unusual and a little unsettling.

Delaney wears it like a statement. He is mourning, dangerous and does not belong to polite society. His clothes say all of that before he opens his mouth. That is why the James Delaney outfit feels so powerful. Every piece of it is doing a job.

The Coat: Start Here

The coat is the most important piece. When people talk about the Taboo Tom Hardy Black Coat, this is what they picture first. And that too for good reason because it is extraordinary.

It is a long, double-breasted overcoat in black wool. It falls below the knee, almost to the ankle. The collar is a wide lapel style that can be worn up against the wind or laid flat. The sleeves are full length with open cuffs. There are side pockets at the waist. The inside has a soft lining. The shoulders are structured and the fit through the chest and torso is close without being tight.

What Goes Under the Coat

The coat gets all the attention but the layers underneath matter a lot. They are what give the outfit its structure when the coat is open.

The Shirt

Delaney wears a slim, dark shirt with a tall collar. In the Regency era, collars mattered; gentlemen usually wore them starched high and done with a cravat. Delaney skips the cravat altogether, which was unusual at the time. To recreate the look, a slim-fit dark shirt with a pointed collar works well. Nothing with logos, embroidery or extra detail. Keep it plain.

The Waistcoat

This is the layer between the shirt and the coat and Delaney actually wears two of them in various combinations throughout the series. They are slim fit and dark. The screen versions were made from rayon and polyester blends.

In that era, waistcoats were one of the few ways men could show a bit of personality. Patterned fabrics, brighter colors and interesting textures were all common choices. Delaney obviously wants none of that. His waistcoats are as dark and plain as everything else.

The Trousers

Straight cut, dark and sitting slightly higher on the waist than what most men wear today. In some scenes, you can spot a drop-front style with laced detailing along the outer calf, a feature common in working-class and military dress around 1814. For a modern take, straight-leg dark trousers with a clean cut work just fine.

The Accessories: Hat, Boots and Gloves

The Top Hat

This is the next standout piece after the coat. Delaney wears a tall, tapered stovepipe top hat in black felt, with a crown around six inches high. It narrows slightly toward the top and sits on a flat brim, giving it a sharp, unmistakable shape. In 1814 London, this style was standard for men.

The Boots

Long black captain-style boots that come up to the knee. Round toe, flat sole and no heel. They have a cuffed or slightly buckled top. These are working boots, built for someone who walks on wet docks and rough ground. By 1814, this style of long boot worn over trousers was completely normal street wear in London, especially around the docks and in working-class areas.

The Gloves

Simple black leather gloves that fit tightly on the hands. They are made from soft lambskin leather. There are no buckles, no extra stitching, and no designs. They look plain and clean.

How to Wear This Look Today Without Looking Like You Are in Costume

I know that most people reading this are not going to a cosplay event. They just like the look and want to bring some version of it into real life. The good news is that this is actually one of the easier periods to modernize because the whole thing is built on basics.

The coat is the one piece worth investing in properly. A long wool overcoat in black or deep charcoal shows the modern version of the look.  For everyday wear, a dark fitted turtleneck works well in place of the traditional shirt and waistcoat. Pair it with slim dark trousers or straight-leg black jeans to keep things clean and balanced.

Finish it off with boots or simple black lace-up leather boots that give the same sharp edge as the original.

The top hat is the one piece that takes real commitment. If you’re going to wear it, wear it with confidence. The rule across all of it is simple. No color, no decorative details and no accessories that call attention to themselves. The Delaney look is about presence, not decoration.

Conclusion

There’s something about James Delaney’s outfit that goes beyond just looking cool on screen. It taps into something many men respond to: the idea of clothing that carries meaning. Every piece has a reason to be there. Nothing is wasted. Nothing is there just to look nice in 19th century men’s fashion style.

The coat is protection. The hat is the authority. The boots are practical. The all-black palette sends a clear message, creating the impression of a man who neither seeks nor needs approval.

The other day, I stumbled onto a rabbithole of people recommending these Pêche loafers as being amazingly comfortable for walking all day in cities like New York. The brand (Pêche) is new to me, so I was intrigued.

The loafers do look really great — and they’re quite affordable. I’ve pictured the Hugh loafer; it comes in black and brown in sizes 35-41. Another bestseller is the Ronan loafer, with more of a square toe (that comes in black and cream). Lovely.

What Are the Best Reward Credit Cards?

Let’s have an open thread today: what are the best reward credit cards? Which ones do you use if you travel a lot; which ones do you use otherwise?

We had an Amazon Prime visa for years (years!) until I realized we could literally only get cash back with it, and we weren’t getting very many “extra” points because I didn’t do that much shopping on Amazon or at Whole Foods.

A few years ago we made the switch to Chase Preferred and I feel like we’ve made better use of the points we’ve gotten (on travel), and that it better maximizes points for things that we do spend money on, like restaurants. (If you want a referral link to check them out, here’s mine — apparently you can get 75,000 bonus points after you spend $5K on purchases in the first 3 months.)

The most recent threadjack on this point was one from April 2025 — interestingly readers were saying Chase Reserve is the better deal of the two main offerings from Chase. (Chase Preferred is $95 per year with 3x points on dining and 2x on travel, while the Reserve has $795 annual fee but 8x points on all Chase Travel purchases. You used to get access to hotel lounges with both cards, but now you need the Reserve to get access.)

Other cards that came up in the thread…

  • AA Executive World Elite
  • Amex Gold
  • Costco’s Visa
  • Fidelity Credit Card
  • Amex Blue Cash

Readers, what reward credit cards do you swear by if you travel often? If you DON’T travel often, which are your preferred cards?

Spring may be in full bloom right now, but I’ve got one thing on my mind: summer fashion.

Summer is the time to finally ditch the layers and show off your warm-weather style in its full glory — no more hiding behind jackets and sweaters!

S/S ’26 is filled with so many fun fashion trends to try out, from colorful prints to retro silhouettes and unique details. And if you want to try these trends out, I have good news: you won’t have to break the bank to upgrade your summer style. I’ve scoured the internet to find 25 of the cutest summer fashion must-haves, all under $100.

From dresses to sandals and everything in between, these affordable summer fashion items will have you covered from head-to-toe.

So, if you’re ready to refresh your wardrobe and get it summer-ready, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for the 25 summer fashion items that will make you the main character of the season.

Summer Dresses Under $100

Sundress season is here! From flirty mini dresses to flowy maxi dresses, you’ll want to add these affordable dress picks to your summer wardrobe ASAP.

Polka Dot Halter Mini Dress

pacsun polka dot dresspacsun polka dot dress

Polka dot is the “it” print of the summer, so a polka dot dress is obviously going to be a must this season.

I adore this black and white polka dot mini dress with a cowl halter neck and an open back — it’s guaranteed to turn heads (in the best way).

Its lightweight woven fabric and peplum hem make it ideal for hot weather, too. Wear it with kitten heels and some cute jewelry for a flirty, feminine look.

Striped Mini Dress

pp burgundy striped mini dresspp burgundy striped mini dress

The other big print you’ll be seeing everywhere this summer? Stripes. And colorful ones, at that!

Rather than classic black (or navy) and white stripes, opt for eye-catching color combinations this season, like this burgundy and off-white striped mini dress with a retro, semi-sporty vibe.

The stripes give this dress a more laid-back feel so that you can wear this dress casually during the daytime with flat sandals or sneakers. With its spaghetti straps and cotton blend, it’s great for a hot day.

White Embroidered Maxi Dress

hollister white maxi dresshollister white maxi dress

Breezy and beautiful, a flowy white maxi dress is quintessential for the summertime. It’s a classic item that doesn’t go out of style, and looks both effortless and elegant.

This white maxi dress features eyelet embroidery and a smocked waist, along with pockets (!) and built-in cups, so you won’t need to worry about bra straps showing — which makes its open-back design that much more appealing.

Floral Print Skort

AF floral skort dressAF floral skort dress

Floral print is another amazing option for the spring and summer seasons, and while this may look like a simple floral mini dress, it actually features built-in shorts and a built-in bra.

This cotton-blend skort is perfect for throwing on and looking instantly cute, without having to worry about pretty much anything, since it’s got it all built in!

And if floral prints aren’t your thing, it comes in a bunch of other colors and patterns to choose from.

Bandage Mini Dress

Edikted bandage dressEdikted bandage dress

Have you heard? The bandage dress is back!

This type of dress, which was a staple in the 90s and 2000s, is back on the fashion scene and perfect for when you want to go for a sultry, curve-hugging look.

If you’ve got going out plans this summer, this turquoise-colored knit bandage mini dress is going to make you the center of attention with its sexy silhouette and bright, summery hue.

Summer Tops Under $100

Beat the heat in style with the cutest summer tops under $100.

Striped Button Top

Zara striped button topZara striped button top

It’s not just the colorful stripes that make this top trendy — it’s also the button details along the neckline that give it major style points.

This summer, you’ll be seeing buttons everywhere, but not where you’d expect them: instead, buttons are becoming an accent rather than a functional detail when it comes to clothing. They make for an interesting, eye-catching effect!

This short-sleeved top features small button appliqués along its neckline that contrast with its bold stripes for a unique look. You can make it a set by scooping up its matching striped shorts, as well.

Polka Dot Halter Top

edikted polka dot halter topedikted polka dot halter top

Of course, I had to include a polka dot top in this round-up. And how cute is this polka dot halter top?

It’s so summery, and has a retro feel with a flirty open back and tie behind the neck. Whether you wear it with slim sunnies and a headband during the day, or dress it up with jewelry and a sleek, clean girl bun at night, you can’t go wrong.

The only difficult decision when it comes to this top will be what color to choose, since it is available in navy blue, red, black, and white, all of which are completely adorable.

Floral Print Corset Top

pp floral print corset toppp floral print corset top

This floral print corset top is equal parts sweet and sexy. It has a darling floral print, lace trim, and a tie detail at the front, with a daring plunge front and hook-and-eye closures.

Keep it elevated by wearing it with a silky midi skirt, or make it laid-back by wearing it with denim — either way, this feminine top is going to look fabulous.

Gingham Halter Top

lulus gingham cherries toplulus gingham cherries top

If gingham and cherries don’t scream*summer,* IDK what does!

This halter peplum top was made for the season with its delightful, picnic-inspired print. The red cherries pop against the blue gingham, making this a prime summertime pick.

Style it with denim shorts, breezy white linen pants, or wear it as a set with its matching high-rise shorts.

Double-Layer Cami Top

AF double layer camAF double layer cam

The summer calls for plenty of camis and tank tops, and in 2026, you’ll be seeing tons of double-layer styles. These give you a layered look minus the bulk, and in many cases, creates a fashion-forward color blocking effect.

This cami is an elevated basic, thanks to its trendy double-layered design and smooth, seamless cotton blend fabric. Available in a few different colors including this trendy butter yellow option, it is perfect for the summer.

My favorite thing about this cami? It features removable pads, so that you don’t have to wear a bra with it, making it that much more comfortable and effortless.

Summer Skirts & Shorts Under $100

As the summer temps rise, you’ll be reaching for shorts and skirts over jeans and leggings, and these are the best of the under-$100 bunch.

Two-Piece Skirt Set

UO ruffle skirt setUO ruffle skirt set

I love matching sets, because these make getting dressed as easy as can be. There’s zero guesswork involved, and they look beyond cute.

This skirt and crop top two-piece set is adorable, with tiered ruffles that create a flouncy silhouette on both the crop top and A-line mini skirt. Together, they create an eye-catching ensemble, but you can also pair them with other items in your wardrobe, making this set versatile. (For example, the crop top would also look great worn with some high-rise denim shorts).

Best of all, both pieces are 100% cotton, and we all know that natural fiber fabrics are ideal for the summertime heat.

Polka Dot Micro Shorts

revolve fp polka dot micro shortsrevolve fp polka dot micro shorts

Micro shorts have been trending all winter (in heavier materials like faux leather and suede, and paired with tights), so why wouldn’t we bring this trend into the summertime?

It doesn’t get more trend-forward than this polka dot pair, which has an adorable retro vibe. They are hot-weather-ready with their micro design, and look amazing with both heels and flats.

I love the idea of styling them with pieces that play up their retro aesthetic, like a halter top and wide headband, as shown above.

Denim Jorts

UO levis jortsUO levis jorts

If micro shorts aren’t your thing, then go for some baggy jorts this summer (or try both!).

It doesn’t get more classic than Levi’s denim, and the brand’s baggy jorts have a vintage-inspired feel that will make you look cool and laid-back.

You can go baggy-on-baggy by pairing them with an oversized graphic print t-shirt, or go for the “little top, big pants” look by wearing them with a crop top; either way, they are a total vibe for summer 2026.

Denim Mini Skirt

cotton on denim mini skirtcotton on denim mini skirt

Denim shorts are obviously a summertime staple, but a denim mini skirt is a girlier take on the classic, laid-back look.

You still get the relaxed feel of denim but in the form of a more feminine skirt, and this one features a mid-rise with a clean, classic silhouette that makes it super versatile.

It’ll pair well with practically anything, from tanks and crop tops to oversized graphic print tees.

Striped Asymmetrical Midi Skirt

motel rocks striped midi skirtmotel rocks striped midi skirt

A flowy, asymmetrical-cut midi skirt is a go-to choice on a hot day, and this one is ultra-cool with its low, V waistband and striped print.

It can easily be dressed up or down depending on your plans: wear it with flats or sandals and a tank top for the daytime, or pair it with kitten heels and a crop top at night.

Its floaty design and chic stripes make it a winner.

Summer Accessories Under $100

An outfit is not complete without some cute accessories, and these affordable accessory picks are going to take your summer looks to the next level.

Oversized Aviator Sunglasses

amazon oversized aviator sunglassesamazon oversized aviator sunglasses

Sunny days call for some cool sunglasses, and this summer, oversized aviator sunglasses are a must-have — especially if they have a retro aesthetic.

Opt for some with chunky square frames and tinted lenses, like this pair, for a bold contrast that is going to make even a simple outfit look instantly cooler.

Bikini Charms

fp bikini charmsfp bikini charms

Bikini charms are one of the hottest summer trends, but rather than drop $$$ on an expensive swimsuit with charms, you can get the look with this three-pack that will transform any of your bikinis in a flash!

These adorable charms with dangling pendants clip onto the strings of your bikini, adding instant shine and uniqueness to your swimsuit. Add just one, or all three — your beach look will be majorly upgraded.

Polka Dot Head Scarf

pp blue polka dot scarfpp blue polka dot scarf

A head scarf is a super cute summer accessory that will add flair to your outfits, and considering that polka dots are the season’s hottest print, a polka dot head scarf makes perfect style sense.

This satin scarf features a blue and burgundy color palette that makes it pop. In addition to wearing it as a head scarf, you can also tie it around your ponytail, tie it on a handbag strap, or around your wrist — it’s a multi-functional accessory that makes a big impact, style-wise.

Raffia Shoulder Bag

AE raffia shoulder bagAE raffia shoulder bag

Straw and raffia are quintessential summer materials, and this raffia shoulder bag is the perfect bag to complement all of your summer looks.

Its light, neutral color and woven raffia design mean it will match nearly any summer outfit, while its detachable rope strap detail adds a trendy touch. It is also just the right size to fit all of your day or nighttime essentials but has a small footprint.

Anklet 2-Pack

Nothing says “summer” like an anklet — it’s the ultimate summer jewelry piece! There’s something so beachy about anklets, especially ones that have details like shells and braided rope.

Get the look with this anklet set that features both a puka shell and a multi-color braided rope design. They look extra cute when worn together, and will add charm to your sandals or low-top sneakers this season.

Every girl needs a pair of simple yet chic slide sandals — they are some of the most versatile summer shoes you could own!

This affordable pair will look great with everything, whether you’re wearing casual denim shorts or a dressier summer frock. They come in classic colors (black, white, and brown) and feature a cushioned insole for added comfort. These are a must-have!

Puma Speedcat Go Ballet Sneakers

FP Puma Ballet SneakersFP Puma Ballet Sneakers

Ballet sneakers are a huge trend this season, and make for the perfect casual summer sneaker, since they are airier and less bulky than regular sneakers.

Puma’s Speedcat Go Ballet Sneakers are the ultimate cool-girl shoe, and their cut-out, mesh upper make them a breezy style that you can wear on hot days.

I love this bold red hue, which will add a major pop of color to your summer ‘fits.

Mesh Ballet Flats

For a less sporty yet just as trendy look, try mesh ballet flats. These are just as airy as sandals, but have a chic, fashion-forward vibe that will make your outfits look elevated.

These mesh Mary Jane flats feature a buckle strap with gold hardware and a woven mesh design that is right on trend.

The ivory hue is especially perfect for the summertime, but they also come in black and tan.

Crocs Rubber Toe-Loop Sandals

We all know and love our Crocs clogs, but this summer, why not step things up a notch with the brand’s sleek sandals, instead?

These flat rubber toe-loop sandals feature a comfy EVA sole with a strappy design and a square toe that gives them a chic look. They are more polished than flip flops, yet can withstand getting wet if you wear them to the beach or pool. Basically, they are the ultimate summer sandal, and their neutral hue will match with everything.

Kitten Heel Sandals

UO metal toe ring heeled sandals

For a summer night out on the town, you’ll need some heeled sandals with a stylish flair, like these kitten heeled sandals with a gold metal toe accent.

The metal hardware, combined with the square toe and strappy slingback silhouette, makes these heels ultra-stylish. Available in black, red, and white, they will add polish to your dressy outfits. Plus, not only is a kitten heel fashionable, but it’s much easier to walk (and dance) around in!

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Despite the name, I think this top from M.M.LaFleur would be great for a business casual look. It has the gorgeous shape of a wrap top mixed with the polish of a button-up, plus I love the orange-y color for summer.

I would wear it with navy trousers, but there’s also a coordinating skirt if you want the shirtdress look.

The top is $279 at M.M.LaFleur and comes in sizes XS-XXL.

Amazon Sundays: Spring Finds for the Girls’ Bedrooms

A soft spring approach to the girls’ bedrooms, with pieces to make each space feel a little lighter, brighter, and more inviting for everyday use.

I always come back to a mix of practical staples and more charming details. Rattan storage baskets and fresh bedding set the foundation, while gingham pillows, delicate florals, and soft textiles bring in that seasonal shift. I love adding in pieces that double as both function and decor—wooden toys, dollhouse accents, and small storage finds that can stay out and still feel considered. Finishing touches like simple artwork, cozy layers, and everyday essentials help tie everything together.

They become spaces where they can play, read, and spend time, while still feeling calm, thoughtful, and pulled together for spring.
