With summer coming to a close, the calendar is already filling up with everything September brings, and my cart is following suit. I’m eyeing pieces that make getting dressed feel particularly festive again: a lace-trimmed dress, an embellished skirt, a feathered bag. Things that bring a little new-season energy to an outfit and capture that excited feeling of what this time of year brings.

For the girls, getting dressed becomes part of the back-to-school reset. Leopard, punchy pink, patterned jackets, and bright ballet flats bring some fun to the return to routine and make those everyday school mornings more playful.

At home, my eye is moving toward pieces with more visual volume. Patterned upholstery and marbled ceramics, small pops of color on the walls. More pattern, more texture, more personality — exactly the direction I want to take things for fall.

Is it just me or does it feel like there are a million new setting powders coming out on the market, and older ones are getting rejuvenated again? Although I’m glad to say goodbye to the “baking” trend, I wasn’t exactly a fan of the “glass skin” era either. Here are a few that I’m liking for just a light dusting to finish your look.

(I should note that even though these products come in different formats, I like to use a big fluffy brush to apply all of them.)

The Setting Powders I’m Using Now

bareMinerals Original Mineral Veil

This was one of the OGs for me — I like that it’s made with 85% naturally-derived ingredients, and a relatively short ingredient list at that. I have the translucent “color,” and it’s a great one to keep in your office to powder your nose because you don’t have to worry about it changing whatever makeup you already have on. (I prefer the pressed compact, but it also comes in a format with loose powder!)

It’s $36 at Nordstrom and bareMinerals, available in five skin-toned colors as well as translucent.

Guerlain’s Meteorites

I really love Guerlain Meteorites, including the tiny balls — it feels like it sets makeup, color corrects, mattifies, illuminates. It’s kind of like the gentlest highlighting product you have, but one that you brush all over your face.

You can find Meteorites in 4 colors at Nordstrom for $75.

LANEIGE Neo Blurring Loose Finishing Powder for Shine Control and Smoothing

Years ago I had a drugstore product that was a light blue powder — I was always a fan of that, and I kept the compacts for years after they stopped making it. Based on that fond memory, I picked up this green blurring powder from Laneige in one of the recent sales. This one also absorbs oil, smooths, and blurs, but it feels like it has a less matte finish than bareMinerals and a less “radiant” finish than Guerlain. So if you’re looking for something in the middle, this is great.

It’s happening. I’m finally all-in on vests. (I know, I know, I’m late to the game.) I work in a place where sleeveless tops are acceptable in the summer (know your office!), and I’ve finally figured out how to make them work.

The color combinations I love most are often the ones that look a little impossible at first glance. Fringe, feathers, pattern, shine, all of it brought to life by color. When I’m putting an outfit together, I’m always looking for a clear line running through it. That’s the kind of maximalism I resonate with, when every piece brings its own detail but every color feels like it was chosen for a reason. It could be a bright shirt cutting through velvet, a saturated pant that gives a pattern somewhere to land, or a pop of red that brings the whole thing to life.

The trick with a decorative color story is working in a few clean notes to hold it together. The tailoring of a button-down, a simple knit, the clean line of a trouser. That’s polished maximalism at its best to me: layered, expressive, alive, with intention behind every piece.
