Multiple services between the two towns were either cancelled or delayed after a train broke down.
Maintenance teams attended in efforts to fix it, while rail company Northern advised passengers to use alternative Northern, TransPennine Express or LNER trains to complete their journeys.
At just before 5.15pm, Northern confirmed that all lines have been reopened, though some disruptions still remain.

A spokesperson for Northern said earlier: “Services between Bolton and Blackburn are currently being disrupted in both directions due to a broken down train. Maintenance teams are with the train and are trying to rectify the fault.
“Train services between Bolton and Blackburn in both directions are currently suspended, with disruption expected until around 6pm.
“Northern tickets may be used at no additional costs on board any alternative Northern, TransPennine Express or LNER service via any reasonable route to complete your journey.”
