Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey reveals a darker, less triumphant heroism

Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey reveals a darker, less triumphant heroism

Warning: this review contains spoilers for The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan’s US$250m (£187m), three-hour epic starring Matt Damon as the Greek king fighting his way home from Troy took more than $264m on its opening weekend – comfortably tripling the opening take of his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer in 2023.

It has earned Nolan the best reviews of his career. But crucially, it is the most ambitious attempt in a generation to put Homer’s 3,000-year-old poem back at the centre of popular culture. The heroism Nolan’s film depicts is far darker and far less triumphant than audiences might expect. It is also a film built for the biggest screen.

Nolan shot the film entirely on IMAX’s 70mm cameras, a first for any feature, carrying cast and crew across Morocco, Greece, Sicily, Iceland and the northeast of Scotland.

The result swings between extreme long shots of sea, stone and sky and extreme close-ups of faces, between monumental sets and claustrophobic caves and courtyards. It is unmistakably, a film in conversation with Nolan’s previous work. But also with a century of screen epics, from the blood and grandeur of Gladiator (2000) and Troy (2004), back to the forgotten silent versions of the Trojan story that German and Italian studios made more than a century ago.

Christopher Nolan explains how – and why – he shot The Odyssey on IMAX 70mm film.

Nolan borrows from other genres too: horror creeps into the Cyclops’ cave, supernatural elements into Circe’s hall, comic book action-adventures into Agamemnon’s armour, and literature and the visual arts supply their own echoes, from Dante’s and Virgil’s rival accounts of Ulysses (the Latin name for Odysseus) to Goya’s cannibal god Saturn, glimpsed in the Cyclops’ feast.

With Damon as his central character, Nolan has embraced the actor’s established image as a rugged, dutiful soldier to build a very different kind of Odysseus, defined less by guile and cunning than by determination and guilt.

Of an accomplished female cast – Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Zendaya (Athena), Lupita Nyong’o (Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra), Samantha Morton (Circe), Charlize Theron (Calypso) – only Hathaway’s Penelope is given the material to show real depth.

Robert Pattinson’s scheming suitor Antinous and John Leguizamo’s devoted swineherd Eumaeus are the strongest supporting performances. Tom Holland plays Odysseus’ son Telemachus – an actor coming of age playing a character coming of age. The jury is out on whether the maturity comes through.

Cutting the gods, doubling down on Troy

The film keeps Homer’s three-part shape – a son’s search for his father, Odysseus’s own account of his travels, the killing of his wife’s suitors – while reworking nearly everything inside it.

The gods are largely gone: there is no council on Olympus, Athena is reduced to a couple of coaching cameos, whereas Zeus and Poseidon become the elemental forces of thunder and sea storms.

Odysseus’ own father Laertes never reappears, the suitors’ souls never descend to the underworld, and Penelope’s test of the marriage bed vanishes along with much of the poem’s dialogue, including the Cyclops’ famous “Nobody” trick, replaced here by a wordless dash for the cave mouth.

The single biggest cut is the Phaeacians’ island, roughly a third of the poem, where Odysseus is welcomed, tells his story and is sent home in comfort. Nolan replaces it with a lotus-drugged, amnesiac Odysseus slowly recovering his own story for one listener, the goddess Calypso, and returning home a castaway.

The single biggest addition is Troy itself: the horse, the lie, the sack of the city, restaged again and again from different angles until a legendary victory starts to look like a crime scene.

A homecoming that resists closure

None of this feels indulgent; every spectacle is tied directly to the story Nolan is telling, and that story is a bleak one. Its subject is the price of action – what is owed to family, fellow citizens, strangers, animals, the natural world – and the unreliability of memory once survivors start shaping their ordeal into a story that flatters them.

The film’s own framing device makes the same point: Nolan casts the rapper Travis Scott as the bard who opens the action, explicitly linking Homer’s sung, oral tradition to hip-hop’s, a reminder that this poem took shape by being performed aloud.

It unfolds at the edge of a dark age, amid the terror of raiders “from the sea” and the film’s sharpest move is to let us notice, slowly, that its own heroes are those raiders.

Fittingly, the film refuses a happy ending. Odysseus reaches Ithaca, but then leaves again. But not as an adventurer this time (as is sometimes presented in modern versions of the myth) or to appease Poseidon (as foretold in Homer), but as a self-imposed exile doing penance for his unburied companions and the harm he caused in getting home.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator relaunched the epic for cinemagoers a quarter of a century ago with an uncompromising hero saving a broken world. Now Nolan’s Odyssey does the same for a new generation with the opposite figure: a traumatised hero whose own violence helped break it. That makes it a braver film than its trailers suggest.

The more interesting question now is what comes next. Whether future screen epics keep chasing Gladiator’s model, where the hero pays with his own life and stays morally whole, or Nolan’s, where the hero survives and has to live with the cost he has made others pay.

Britain withdraws diplomatic staff from Iran as US pounds more regime targets and Houthis attack Red Sea oil tankers

Britain has withdrawn remaining diplomatic staff from Iran as the conflict with the US continued to escalate with a twelfth night of airstrikes and attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

A statement on the Foreign Office (FCDO) website said: ‘Due to the security situation, UK staff have been temporarily withdrawn from Iran. Our embassy continues to operate remotely.’

The FCDO advises against all travel to Iran, saying British and dual British-Iranian residents face ‘significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention’.

A similar move was made in February ahead of the start of US and Israeli combat operations.

US Central Command said late on Wednesday that the 12th night of attacks was designed to ‘further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters’.

Announcing the end of the latest wave of strikes on Thursday morning, they said US forces struck military targets including maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, coastal surveillance sites and air defence assets.

‘The strikes further degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels,’ they said on X.

Missiles struck near the cities of Ahvaz, Ramshir and Andimeshk in western Iran, according to Iranian state media, who said two people were killed in the town of Shalamcheh on the Iraqi border.

Kuwait’s army said on X that the country’s air defences were ‘confronting attacks by hostile drones, following the sinful Iranian aggression’.

US President Donald Trump had warned earlier that one bridge or power plant would be destroyed for each ship shot at by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.

‘From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT,’ Trump wrote on social media.

Foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also said an ‘eye for an eye’ approach would be adopted by Iran.

‘Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response,’ he posted on X on Wednesday.

Iran’s army and its Revolutionary Guards on Thursday said they attacked several US bases in Kuwait following attacks by American forces on Iran.

They also attacked and destroyed several American military assets in Jordan.

The targets included a radar for the US THAAD missile defence system, a Patriot system, a C-RAM radar and a helicopter hangar, according to a statement from the Guards aired by state TV.

Meanwhile, a Saudi vessel was attacked in the Red Sea as Tehran-backed Houthi rebels claimed to strike tankers in the waterway, Riyadh’s state media said Thursday.

The Houthis had threatened to blockade Saudi ports on the Red Sea – a key route for oil shipments – while the five-month war had already led to the effective closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Washington and Tehran have been battling over key crude supply route Hormuz, which led to the collapse of a preliminary deal aimed at ending the war that has sent global oil prices climbing.

The Houthis said they had carried out missile and drone strikes on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, the Encelia and the Layla, after threatening to blockade Saudi ports.

British naval security monitor UKMTO said the master of a tanker reported being hit by an unknown projectile about 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq, causing a fire that the crew was fighting.

Saudi Arabia confirmed the Encelia had been struck, without commenting on the other tanker.

It remains unclear how fully the Houthis could enforce a blockade, but the threat could compound the shock of the Hormuz closure, endangering Riyadh’s ability to bypass the strait for some oil exports.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Thursday they stopped three oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, as the United States and Iran vie for control over the vital waterway.

In recent weeks, Iran has hit tankers using a route hugging the Omani coast to traverse the strait, in a bid to strongarm vessels into using its own waters and pay for safe passage.

‘Three oil tankers, provoked and tempted by the child-killing American army, were trying to pass through the mine-laid route south of the Strait of Hormuz, but after one of them exploded and caught fire, the other two quickly turned around and turned back,’ the Guards said in a statement quoted by Iranian state media.

‘The Strait of Hormuz is under our control… and any ship that is deceived by the US and intends to pass without coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran will suffer the same fate,’ the statement added.

The statement did not say when the incident happened.

Fighting reignited two weeks ago after ceasefire talks between the US and Iran broke down

The 11th night of strikes on Iran into Wednesday saw air defences opening fire over the capital Tehran.

Iran launched a missile attack on a Jordanian city while alerts were sounded in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Iran has responded to US attacks by targeting energy infrastructure and desalination plants which provide drinking water in neighbouring Gulf countries.

The Guards claimed attacks on Ali Al Salem base, Camp Udairi and a telecommunications tower, while the army said it targeted Camp Doha, Ali Al Salem base and Camp Arifjan, according to separate statements by the forces carried by state TV.

International law generally prohibits such attacks unless the infrastructure is being used for military purposes.

It  comes as the US on Wednesday announced a landmark deal with Saudi Arabia that would establish a civilian nuclear program in the Gulf country, with Washington insisting the agreement includes nonproliferation safeguards.

The move comes as Trump fights a war with Iran that began in large part over concerns with Tehran’s nuclear program – an issue that remains a key point of contention during now-stalled peace talks.

Two agreements – one on ‘peaceful nuclear cooperation’ and another on ‘bilateral safeguards’ – were signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the US Energy Department said.

The text of the deals was not immediately made public.

‘Together, these two agreements lay the legal foundation for a decades-long, multi-billion-dollar partnership that advances several priority economic and strategic objectives, including nuclear nonproliferation,’ the department said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has previously vowed that his country would ‘without a doubt’ build nuclear weapons if Iran developed them.

The kingdom has faced mounting drone and missile attacks by Iran on its military and civilian infrastructure since Tehran’s war with the US resumed earlier this month.

Saudi officials insist the program is strictly civilian and will allow the kingdom to power its homes with nuclear energy, freeing up more crude for export.

Convicted killer accused of murdering two friends sent text saying he felt ‘absolutely bloodthirsty’ and ‘real hostile’ on the day first victim went missing, court hears

Published

on

James Desborough (pictured) is accused of murdering Claudio Aquilino and Daniel Coleman

A convicted killer who is accused of murdering two friends sent a text message saying he was ‘bloodthirsty’ and feeling hostile around the time he allegedly carried out the killings, a court heard today.

James Desborough, 40, who was a fan of the television serial killer ‘Dexter’, is accused of murdering acquaintances Daniel Coleman and Claudio Aquilino near his remote woodland cabin before chopping up their bodies, then cremating and burying them nearby.

Desborough today admitted in court that he had used Mr Coleman’s bank card to buy himself a ‘large beef roast’ after dismembering his friend’s body.

He has confessed he ‘lost all grip on reality’ and tried to hide their bodies – insisting he only found them dead on his land and that he didn’t kill them.

Jurors have been told the former construction firm boss already has one conviction for murder after he was found guilty of killing his prison cellmate Steven Kempster while he was awaiting trial over the deaths of Mr Coleman and Mr Aquilino.

Winchester Crown Court heard he strangled Mr Kempster, 65, because he was annoyed by his loud snoring while on remand at HMP Exeter in September.

Today jurors were shown a text message in which Desborough tells an acquaintance that he is ‘absolutely bloodthirsty real hostile fuming spitting feathers’.

The accused claimed that this was due to the state his cabin and the surrounding wood had been left in by the people staying there – which included Mr Aquilino, 57, and Mr Coleman, 43.

The text was dated on May 30, 2025 – the date Mr Aquilino became a missing person.

However, when Desborough was challenged on whether the text was evidence that he could become ‘violent’ and ‘threaten’ people, he claimed he did not even know what the word bloodthirsty meant.

He told the court: ‘I don’t know what it means to be fair. I was very unhappy about rubbish and human waste being left everywhere.

‘I don’t understand how that’s a threat.’

A week earlier on May 21, Desborough told Mr Coleman he was ‘a f****** retard’ over text and warned him ‘don’t take me for a mug, boy’.

Jurors heard the two had fallen out over Mr Coleman’s relationship with his wife, Hannah Cresswell, whom Desborough had had an affair with.

Desborough claimed today that Mr Coleman shook his hand when he discovered the affair.

But in this text he described Mr Coleman and Ms Cresswell, ‘a pair of f****** toxic wasters’, having previously emailed the council that Mr Coleman was ‘getting on his f****** tits’.

Desborough is accused of murdering Mr Aquilino on a date between April 17 and July 7 last year and Mr Coleman between June 2 and July 7 last year.

He allegedly chopped up their bodies into ‘pieces of flesh’ before leaving them in shallow graves by a stream in secluded woodland near Sticker, Cornwall.

The trio met at a shared accommodation block called Sandy Lodge for people with addiction issues in Newquay.

Prosecutor Ahmed Hossain KC said Mr Coleman had lived with his wife at the shelter until March 2025 when they split.

Desborough told the court he did not think Mr Coleman was controlling in his relationship with Ms Cresswell, but in another email to the council claimed he was ‘massively concerned about her estranged husband and his controlling behaviour’.

A previous witness in the case, Craig Cudmore, alleged that Desborough once stared at Mr Coleman and said ‘(It) looks like someone else is getting buried in the woods’.

Today Desborough admitted under cross-examination that this could have happened but he did not remember.

This evidence was presented to challenge Desborough’s account that he had a steady friendship with the two deceased men.

It was also alleged by prosecutors today that Desborough had sent texts after the men’s deaths to make it seem as though they were still alive.

He also texted a friend that he was going to buy petrol for his chainsaw to make fire wood, which Mr Hossain put to Desborough was an attempt to establish a lie about why he had bought petrol.

The bodies of the two men were burned.

A petrol can was found by Mr Coleman’s grave, which Desborough has claimed someone else ‘possibly’ put there.

This afternoon, Desborough told jurors he bought a ‘large beef roast’ after dismembering his friend’s body and called it ‘everyday life’.

Mr Hossain asked the defendant: ‘That weekend you used (Mr Coleman’s) card to buy yourself a large beef roast, didn’t you?

‘So you just dismembered his body and you used his money and bank card to buy a large beef roast?’

Mr Hossain then asked Desborough if he knew what the word ‘macabre’ meant, to which he said ‘no’.

The lawyer instead asked: ‘It seems unpleasant doesn’t it?’ and Desborough replied: ‘Just everyday life.’

On Tuesday, Desborough said he did not kill the two men and found both of them dead amid ‘a series of unfortunate circumstances’, then decided to ‘destroy’ their bodies.

Mr Hossain has previously told the jury that ‘dismembered’ body parts of both victims were found by police in Paramoor Woods, near Sticker, during searches near Desborough’s cabin last summer.

He added: ‘Both of these men had lived with Mr Desborough…and these two men were last seen alive in the company of James Desborough.

‘After each of them disappeared, their bank accounts were accessed and their money was spent by James Desborough.

‘He killed them, he dismembered their bodies, he attempted to burn and bury their remains to conceal what he had done, and then used their money whilst at the same time lying to those around him about where they had gone.’

Margaret Qualley surfaces for first time since Jack Antonoff split after addressing wild cheating rumors

Margaret Qualley, 31, appeared to be in good spirits in her first public sighting since splitting from husband Jack Antonoff one month shy of their third wedding anniversary

Margaret Qualley appeared to be in good spirits in her first public sighting since splitting from husband Jack Antonoff, just one month shy of their third wedding anniversary.

The newly single 31-year-old was spotted listening to music to get into character on the Jersey City, New Jersey set of Paramount Pictures’ Possession reboot on Wednesday.

Her appearance comes shortly after her rep confirmed the breakup to TMZ on July 10, insisting there ‘was no infidelity’ and ‘no trust issues’ leading to the demise of her ‘rocky’ marriage to the 42-year-old Bleachers frontman.

For her day on set, the two-time Emmy nominee bared her entire back in a black long-sleeve bodysuit, matching A-line chiffon skirt, pantyhose and loafers selected by costume designer Jocelyn Pierce.

In the psychological horror film, Andie MacDowell’s nepo-baby daughter tackles the cathartic yet emotionally exhausting dual roles of Anna and Helen, one of whom exhibits increasingly disturbing behavior amid her divorce.

During one tense scene, Qualley threw on a preppy cardigan over her outfit as she stormed out of the fictional Park View Cafe in visible distress.

Qualley gave her brunette tresses a big boost with rear-length extensions, which were fastened into a loose braid.

The Montana-born, North Carolina-raised beauty – who has a dance and gymnastics background – put her athletic 5ft8in frame to good use running out of the restaurant and down the sidewalk.

Qualley should easily be equipped for the demanding part considering her transformative, prosthetics-heavy turn as Sue and Monstro Elisasue in Coralie Fargeat’s 2024 body horror film, The Substance.

Callum Turner and Paul Dano also star in Possession directed by Parker Finn, who previously helmed the Smile slasher franchise.

And Robert Pattinson happens to be one of the seven credited producers on the film.

Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 Berlin-set version of Possession – starring Isabelle Adjani – involved overwrought emotion, a tentacled creature and two doppelgängers.

‘When I met Margaret at a dinner a few years ago, she told me that she looked more like me than her mother,’ the 71-year-old Frenchwoman told Numéro in May.

‘So it would seem this family resemblance determined the director’s choice for this character in Possession. Also, she is incredibly talented!’

The cult classic has renewed significance following the tragic death of Adjani’s co-star Sam Neill who died, aged 78, on July 13 from pneumonia following a three-year battle with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Meanwhile, Antonoff – who’s still wearing his wedding ring – and his band are next scheduled to headline his very own Shadow of the City Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey on August 28.

The two-time Actor Award nominee and the 14-time Grammy winner haven’t been pictured together since the Grammy Awards on February 1.

A source told DeuxMoi on July 8 that ‘there were many factors that allegedly contributed to the split, with those close to the situation also alleging Jack had long been difficult to live with.’

Last month, the Bleachers noticeably stopped performing Lana Del Rey’s 2023 love ballad Margaret, which Antonoff wrote about his bride.

The Golden Globe-nominated songwriter raised eyebrows when he showed up to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s July 3 wedding festivities with his sister Rachel as his date – rather than Qualley.

Major part of River Cam at ‘serious risk’ as residents call for action

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

Residents have been told to avoid swimming in it

Cambridge residents have raised fears for the future of parts of the River Cam with concerns its health is at “serious risk”. Cambridge residents and councillors have raised the alarm after collapsing riverbanks and unsafe water threaten to turn the River Cam into a “muddy trickle”.

Earlier this year, water tested at the designated bathing site at Sheep’s Green found the water to be among the poorest quality in England and the Environment Agency advised people not to swim.

Resident Andrew Brown said the infrastructure itself is crumbling – pointing out a section of the riverbank at Jesus Lock which is collapsing. The 61-year-old said: “It’s also mirrored when you walk through the town and it’s slowly getting a bit more run down with the pavements etc… this vibe in the city is sort of mirrored by the river.

“These are important places – there’s lots of talk about mental wellbeing and health and these are real resources in a town, especially a town like Cambridge. I do feel it should be looked after.

“I understand there are always cost implications but there’s a general feeling that either things aren’t being spent and the money’s being spent somewhere where it shouldn’t be being spent or, of course, there isn’t the money at all.”

Charles Greensitt feels the river is “not being looked after” and no longer looks the way it used to. The 39-year-old said: “The last few years I’ve been coming down and walking the river.

“I walk from Trumpington Park and Ride all the way into town following the river and this year the wildlife and the way it looks isn’t the same. I know people still swim in it down some of the cleaner parts but it’s just not quite right at the minute.

“I mean I go down and I literally see algae just covering right stretches across – it’s not the same anymore. Things aren’t in balance anymore.”

Cllr Eleanor Toye-Scott brought a motion to last week’s Cambridge City Council meeting calling for more to be done to protect the river as its “health is at serious risk”. The Green councillor said: “When the river is at risk we are all at risk.

“If our city and our region are to have any hope of surviving, let alone thriving, in the years to come it is absolutely essential that we ensure that the River Cam thrives too.”

Cllr Cheney Payne said the locks at Baits Bite and Jesus Green are a “vital element” of the network and she was “very pleased” that mayor Paul Bristow pledged funds towards emergency repairs at Baits Bite.

“However,” the Lib Dem councillor continued, “That’s only a very small drop in the ocean and a huge amount is still needed to repair the Jesus Green Lock, and this is something I really believe we should be asking the government to support.

“If Cambridge is to be at the forefront of the government’s plans for growth it would be highly embarrassing to try to do that if our iconic river becomes a muddy trickle.”

The council passed the motion which called for them to petition organisations responsible for the river – including the EA, Cambridge Water and Anglian Water – to do more to protect it.

Andy Burnham has been hit by a backlash after giving a life peerage and government job to Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar.

Scottish Labour MPs are said to be “furious” at the move, which comes seven months after Sarwar called on Keir Starmer to quit as prime minister over the Peter Mandelson scandal.

Since then, Sarwar has led Labour to its worst ever performance at the Scottish Parliament elections, where the party came a distant second to the SNP and saw its number of MSP fall to just 17.

Nevertheless, he has been rewarded by Burnham, who has made him a minister for state in the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.

Because he is not an MP, Sarwar has also been made a life peer so he can take up the role.

He is also stepping down as Scottish Labour leader, plunging the party north of the Border into fresh turmoil.

One Scottish Labour MP told HuffPost UK that the new PM’s decision had gone down “very, very badly”.

The MP said: “There are 37 Scottish Labour MPs all capable of being ministers. We don’t need to import more. We are furious.”

Sarwar has also been accused of “engineering” his move south with Scottish secretary Douglas Alexander, his close ally who also played a key role in Labour’s disastrous Holyrood campaign.

“Colleagues believe that both Anas and Douglas have failed upwards,” an MP said.

But another Labour MP said: “Good luck to Anas. He gave heart and soul to leading Labour in Scotland.

“No one will take his promotion away from him so long as his first vote is to abolish the House of Lords.”

Marco Rubio addresses rumors Trump will help Andrew and Tristan Tate fight extradition to UK

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio (Pictured) addressed reporters on Wednesday in the Philippines while meeting with foreign ministers from the 11-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, regarding rumors of whether President Trump would intervene in the extradition of the Tate Brothers

Marco Rubio addressed rumors that President Trump would help Andrew and Tristan Tate fight extradition to the United Kingdom, where they are facing charges.

The Secretary of State said that there was ‘no role’ for the administration to play in the Tates’ case while speaking to reporters in the Philippines Wednesday.

‘I don’t know the details of this particular case. I’ve been overseas, but I mean, I know who you’re talking about. I just don’t know the details of it,’ Rubio said.

‘These cases have a process that they go through in the courts. My understanding is that they’re involved in that judicial process, and so that’ll play itself out at this point.

‘And there’s no role for us to play at this moment, or maybe ever in that regard, but I’m not going to opine on that.’

The Tate brothers were arrested at a bare-knuckle boxing event in Miami on Saturday at the request of British detectives over charges of rape, sex trafficking and indecent images of a child.

The arrests sparked speculation that Trump might intervene on their behalf as the brothers have claimed to have close ties to the President and his family.

While Rubio said there was no role for the State Department at this stage, he could ultimately make the final decision on extradition if a Florida court determines the UK’s request meets the legal requirements.

The Tates’ lawyer Joseph McBride suggested that Trump could intervene, claiming the President ‘was elected to fight against this kind of nonsense’ and the Tates had supporters ‘all the way to DC.’

McBride called the UK ‘a fallen state that prosecutes its citizens for free speech.’

Rubio’s statements come shortly after a US official told the Daily Telegraph: ‘The White House has no involvement and no feelings on the issue.’

The British government said it was seeking the extradition of the dual US-UK citizens in relation to an original 21 charges as well as other new allegations involving four women between July 2010 and August 2017.

The brothers deny all wrongdoing and claim that they are the victims of a political witch hunt, a parting shot by outgoing prime minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Andrew Tate has been charged with seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and 19 additional charges relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.

Tristan Tate has been charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The brothers’ lawyers will apply for their release at a hearing on July 27, when a magistrate will decide whether they stay behind bars during the extradition fight.

The Daily Mail revealed last week prior to their arrest that the Tates had met with Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill and been hosted at a party by Trump envoy Paolo Zampolli.

The brothers are star figures in the so-called manosphere, preaching misogynist and chauvinist views to legions of fans, many of them teenage boys.

As well as the UK, the pair are accused of wrongdoing in the US and Romania.

The brothers sued an accuser for defamation in Florida.

They also remain under investigation in Romania over claims they coerced women into pornography, an unresolved case that carries rape and sexual assault allegations.

The pair have not set foot in the UK since Romania lifted a travel ban last year.

They touched down in Florida in February last year, weeks after a senior Trump official reportedly raised their case with Romanian officials.

Asked at the time if his administration had leaned on Bucharest to free them, the President said: ‘I know nothing about that.’

UK weather maps show 7C bitter August chill after scorching 37C heatwave

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Temperatures in the UK are expected to fall dramatically with rain on the cards just days after another scorching heatwave is forecast to grip the nation with highs of 37C

Weather forecasts predict a new heatwave on the horizon as the Met Office warns temperatures could become “very warm again”, however after the initial hot period there is set to be a cold snap.

Weather maps produced by WXCharts using GFS data show a 7C chill after the scorching 37C forecast just days earlier.

Temperatures are expected to plummet on Tuesday, August 4 with lows of 7C in Scotland and Wales.

However, on July 31, some areas of the UK will be a whopping 30 degrees warmer. These highs are forecast to remain into August, with warms of 34C.

On Saturday August 1, temperatures will still sit in the 30s, with London warming up to 33C according to the weather maps. Suffolk and Norfolk are also likely to see highs of 34C.

Even in cooler areas temperatures are expected to be 27C.

The stark difference in weather may serve as a shock for many Brits. Weather maps show the coolest conditions in the Highlands of Scotland, however areas of Yorkshire will only be 8C.

In the South West some parts of Devon are forecast to sit at 9C.

London and surrounding areas are forecast the warmest temperatures of 13C according to the maps, still a harsh drop from days prior.

The Met Office warns in its longer range forecast from July 27 to August 5 that the UK will see ‘changeable’ conditions but does state that temperatures will largely be above average.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “A changeable period is likely overall, with many areas likely to see a mixture of bright or sunny spells and some rain at times.

“Northwestern areas are more likely to see the focus of rainfall, but southeastern areas should also see some showers. Confidence becomes lower into the start of August, but there are hints that high pressure could return for a time, which would mean dry conditions resuming, especially in the south.

“Winds will be mostly light or moderate, but occasionally fresh or strong around some coasts, mainly in the north and west.

“Temperatures will be near or above normal, warmest in the south, and perhaps becoming very warm again by the start of August.”

Ann Widdecombe: Family announces public memorial later this year

Published

on

Ann Widdecombe wears a red jacket and holds a microphone while speaking at the Reform Party 2024 Conference.

A public memorial for Ann Widdecombe will be held later this year, her family has said in a statement.

Former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Widdecombe, 78, was found dead in her Dartmoor home with serious head injuries earlier this month.

Her family thanked the public for “the wide expression of condolences” but asked that her private service, to be held in the coming weeks and for which invitations have already been sent, is “limited to those closest to Ann”.

“We understand that there is significant public interest in the funeral of Ann Widdecombe,” the statement said.

“A private service for family and close friends will be held in the coming weeks, and invitations for this ceremony have been distributed.

“A more public memorial will follow later in the year, the details of which will be released in due course.

“While we are very grateful for the wide expression of condolences, the family would ask that this initial service is limited to those closest to Ann.”

Tributes poured in to Widdecombe from TV stars and across the political spectrum following her death.

Anton Du Beke, who was her partner on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, said he was devastated , which he called the “saddest of news”.

“I had the most brilliant time with Ann on Strictly Come Dancing, she became a real friend, she was fun, she was upbeat, she was positive, she was supportive, she was game, wanted to enter into the spirit of the whole thing,” he said in a video on X.

Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party for which Widdecombe served as shadow home secretary from 1999 to 2001, said the party was “reeling”.

She described Widdecombe as “a very fun and feisty woman who spoke her mind”, while the then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Widdecombe was a “distinguished politician”.

In a video posted on social media, Farage said Widdecombe was “an extraordinary woman” and “someone who gave her life to public service, to fighting for the things she believed in”.

He described her as “a devout Christian and somebody with strong socially conservative views. Perhaps not popular in modern Britain but that is what Ann believed in”.

Meghan boasts Archie and Lilibet ‘eat Brussels sprouts’ in new trailer for MasterChef Australia cameo as she asks contestants to ‘cook from the heart and keep a sense of humour’

Meghan Markle proudly boasted that her children enjoy eating Brussels sprouts in a new teaser for her judging spot on MasterChef Australia

Meghan Markle proudly boasted that her children enjoy eating Brussels sprouts and encouraged MasterChef Australia contestants to ‘keep a sense of humour’ about the competition in a new teaser for her judging spot on the reality show.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, will appear as a guest judge on the latest series of the Channel 10 programme during Sunday night’s episode.

In a two-minute clip released today, Meghan gave viewers a glimpse of the cooking challenge she set for competitors as she asked them to whip up a dish using ingredients like honey, macadamia nuts, citrus, edible flowers and celeriac.

The Duchess, whose Netflix series With Love, Meghan was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy, also had a few words of wisdom for the contestants as she acknowledged ‘there is a lot of pressure in this kitchen’.

‘I don’t like to cook that way, I like to cook in a really relaxed fashion,’ she continued. ‘So, all I can say to the competitors was to just remember to have fun, to keep a sense of humour about it, and to cook from the heart’.

Meghan added that ‘food and cooking are how I show my nurturing and love for my friends, family and my kids’ in a sweet nod to her and Prince Harry‘s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

For Meghan’s guest spot, contestants of the hit show were asked to create a ‘dish fit for a Duchess’ using ingredients she handpicked from the pantry.

As she unveiled a table laden with seasonal produce, Meghan told the contestants ‘my kids eat Brussels sprouts’ as judge Poh Ling Yeow could be heard saying ‘that’s impressive’.

The former actress filmed her cameo when she visited Australia with husband Prince Harry during their pseudo-royal tour three months ago.

She has said her love of good food and Australia were the two reasons she chose to be a guest judge on the country’s biggest cooking show.

‘What attracted me to the MasterChef Australia kitchen? Two things: my love of food and my love of Australia. It was an easy yes,’ Meghan said in a press release announcing the broadcast date.

‘It’s such a great show. I’m just really honoured that I was asked to be here with you and to be able to judge some of these meals.’

She told the contestants: ‘I’d love it if there’s a connection that you can find when, as you’re cooking something, what is the story behind it?… What is something from your family or from a memory… something sentimental that we can also taste as we taste your dish?’

‘These are all things that, for me, feel really nostalgic,’ she added.

Meghan’s sensitivities over claims that her Australian tour with Harry was cashing in on their royal links led to a row over her MasterChef appearance, it was claimed at the time.

The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly ‘very frustrated’ with producers when she was described as ‘royalty’ in the promo for Australia’s wildly popular reality TV show.

Meghan and her team had ‘specifically’ made clear they did not want the word ‘royal’ used, a source said.

‘We’ve had MasterChef royalty in the kitchen before but no one like this,’ fellow judge Poh said.

But a report in Australia claimed Meghan was unhappy about being described as royalty, despite the fact that, through her marriage to Harry, the term is technically correct.

It comes after Meghan earned a surprise Daytime Emmy nomination for her axed Netflix cooking series – eight years after she ‘politely turned down’ an invite to the glitzy awards ceremony.

Meghan launched the first series of With Love, Meghan on the streaming platform in March 2025, alongside unveiling her lifestyle brand As Ever.

A second series and Christmas special followed, with the mother-of-two offering hosting tips and cooking lessons from inside a rented £5million mansion near her and Prince Harry’s Montecito home.

However, the show was largely panned by critics and viewers alike after it failed to break into the streamer’s top 1,000 most-watched programmes, according to viewing figures released by Netflix.

Despite scathing reviews, the show – which was axed in January 2026 – has received a nomination in the outstanding lifestyle programme category, it was announced last week.

With Love, Meghan will compete with NBC’s heartwarming home makeover show, George To The Rescue, hosted by George Oliphant, which has an 8.8/10 rating on IMDB and Hallmark’s The Motherhood, presented by Connie Britton.
