Morgan Gibbs-White is in line for an England recall to replace Cole Palmer, who is set to withdraw from the squad because of a minor injury.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Gibbs-White missed out on selection in the initial squad for the upcoming Nations League matches, but is set to be called up.

Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel admitted on Friday that Gibbs-White was close to making the cut and the 26-year-old is now expected to replace Chelsea‘s Palmer.

Palmer, 24, had been recalled by Tuchel after being controversially left out of England’s World Cup squad.

Tuchel previously said Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination”.

However, the Blues forward will now miss the extended international break in which England play four games.

The Three Lions face World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, then travel to the Czech Republic (29 September) and Croatia (3 October) before hosting the Czechs on 6 October.

Manchester Airport flights delayed after Nats IT issue

Aer Lingus cancels Manchester Airport flights to New York

Flights at Manchester Airport have been delayed on Monday, September 21, following an issue at National Air Traffic Services’ Prestwick centre in Scotland.

Nats said flights heading north and those departing Scottish airports were subject to delays, while airports south of Manchester were “broadly unaffected”.

By around 10.35am, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said engineers had fixed the problem and systems were resuming, although she warned there could still be delays while operations reset.

She said: “There has been a further IT issue affecting Nats. Engineers have fixed the problem and systems are resuming.

“I know this will be deeply frustrating for passengers after the previous issue.

“There may be some delays as things reset. Please check with your airline for updates.”

The latest disruption comes less than two weeks after another Nats technical problem caused widespread disruption across the UK on September 8, including at Manchester Airport.

Nats has stressed that Monday’s problem is unrelated to the earlier incident.

A Nats spokesperson said: “Our engineers are continuing to investigate the issue at our Prestwick centre in Scotland.

“Airports south of Manchester are broadly unaffected, however flights heading north and flights departing Scottish airports are currently subject to some delay.

“Passengers should check with their airlines. This is unrelated to the issue two weeks ago. We apologise for the disruption.”

Aviation analytics company Cirium said Manchester Airport was among the airports which had seen the most cancellations or flights classed by the company as “no flies” on Monday morning.

According to figures supplied by Cirium at 9.58am, Manchester had recorded four cancellations or “no flies”.

The company uses the latter category for flights delayed by more than three hours.

Airlines have criticised Nats following the latest disruption.

EasyJet said the latest problem “calls into question the resilience of Nats’ systems”.

The airline said: “A Nats air traffic control system failure in its Prestwick centre is causing delays to flights with some unable to operate.

“This, once again, calls into question the resilience of Nats’ systems and demonstrates the need for firm actions to prevent these repeated failures.

“We will do all we can minimise the impact of this for our customers and advise anyone due to fly today to check our flight tracker for the latest information.”

Jet2 chief executive Steve Heapy also called for “action, accountability and proper resilience”.

He said: “Customers work hard to look forward to their holidays and airlines work hard to deliver those holidays.

“They should not be repeatedly exposed to delays and disruption because the UK’s air traffic control systems cannot be relied upon.

“There have been too many incidents, too many reports and too many promises of lessons being learned.”

Mr Heapy said Jet2 was counting the cost of the disruption and would be sending another bill to Nats.

British Airways also said some of its customers were likely to experience disruption following what it described as “yet another technical fault with Nats”.

The previous Nats outage caused significant problems at Manchester Airport, with around 70 arrivals and departures cancelled during the initial disruption and further cancellations continuing into the following day.

More than 2,000 flights arriving or departing the UK were ultimately affected over two days, according to figures previously reported following that incident.

Monday’s problem was centred on Prestwick rather than the earlier nationwide issue and Nats has explicitly said the two incidents are unrelated.

Passengers travelling through Manchester Airport today have been advised to check the latest status of their flight directly with their airline.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport hand luggage mistake that could see your belongings destroyed

Daily Record

Airport officials have also warned that unattended luggage will be treated as suspicious

Passengers flying from Glasgow Prestwick Airport are being urged to double-check what they are packing.

A clear message on the airport’s website states that certain items must not be placed in carry-on or checked luggage. Officials also reiterate that travellers should never leave their bags unattended at any point in the terminal.

Prestwick Airport warns in capitals, “DO NOT PACK in hand luggage” the following items:

  • Liquids and gels over 100mls (liquids, aerosols, gels and lighters under 100mls can be carried on, limited to one clear plastic bag of no more than 20 x 20cm.)
  • Items that are classified as restricted or dangerous (restricted items can be packed in hold luggage)
  • Sharp items, such as nail clippers, scissors, pocketknives and metal nail files

It also notes that travellers should “not carry or pack in hand luggage or hold luggage” the following:

  • Items classified as dangerous
  • Gases (eg CO2 canisters)
  • Flammable liquids (including lighters)

It stresses: “Please note that liquid restrictions will remain in place at Glasgow Prestwick Airport”, adding: Any of these items found at screening points will be removed and destroyed.”

You should contact your airline for more information about what you can pack in hand luggage and hold luggage.

Glasgow Prestwick ‘unattended baggage’ rule

The Airport asks people to “never leave baggage unattended in public areas”. If you do, the rule is that your bag “will be treated as suspicious.”

It advises Glaswegians to “be travel-aware” by packing carefully and getting ready for security checks. Passengers could be asked to remove items such as boots or belts. The airport says people should follow the instructions shown as they approach security and remove any items as directed.

In seperate advice, UK Government officials write: “Airport security staff will not let anything through that they consider dangerous – even if it’s normally allowed in hand luggage.”

As a result, the airport and the UK Government are urging passengers to check the guidance online here to see exactly what they can and can’t take, including specific rules on items such as baby food and medication.

Number of young people in UK not in work or education falls below 1 million

Number of young people in UK not in work or education falls below 1 million

Figures published last month showed 30,000 fewer young people out of work, education or training, while evidence from programmes around the country is offering clues about how that decline could be sustained

The number of young people in the UK who are neither working nor learning has dipped back below one million, offering an encouraging shift after several years in which more 16- to 24-year-olds have become detached from work and education.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics on 27 August estimated that 981,000 young people were not in education, employment or training – commonly described as NEET – between April and June this year, down by 30,000 on the previous three months. The proportion fell from 13.5% to 13%, although it remains slightly higher than a year earlier and the ONS has cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from a single quarter.

Most of the improvement came among young people classed as economically inactive – those who are neither working nor actively looking for work – whose numbers fell by 28,000. The number of unemployed young people who were NEET fell by only 2,000.

There are some encouraging signs elsewhere. The King’s Trust calculates that the number of 18- to 24-year-olds on payroll has increased by around 20,000 since March, even as the wider vacancies market has become tougher.

Richard Rigby, head of UK government affairs at The King’s Trust, cautions that some of that rise can be explained by Britain’s growing population of young adults, but says another factor may be a reduction in economic inactivity.

“Looking beneath the headline figures, some of the increase in youth employment may also reflect a reduction in economic inactivity. In other words, more young people who were previously outside the labour market may be moving into work or actively looking for work,” he tells Positive News.

Evidence from programmes designed specifically to reach those young people is beginning to show what can help. An evaluation of the East Midlands Youth Guarantee Trailblazer found that 74% of participants who had completed one of its programmes had moved into employment, education or training.

Dr Emma Simpson, principal economist at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, which carried out the evaluation, told Positive News that the interventions producing the greatest impact tended to combine practical individual help with opportunities for young people to build relationships.

“A combination of personalised support and fostering connections with others are common features of the interventions which had the most impact: one-to-one support and guidance to identify barriers, help to overcome them, and to break down goals into manageable steps; programmes which help young people to connect with each other and with people in organisations which might support or employ them.”

Research commissioned as part of the government’s review into young people and work suggests the desire to participate is already there. A survey of 417 young people who were NEET, also published on 27 August, found that 84% wanted to be in employment, education or training. More than half wanted a job, while others wanted to enter higher education, apprenticeships or vocational training.

Many were instead facing combinations of poor health, disability, caring responsibilities, financial pressures and a lack of experience, while 38% had never undertaken paid work.

Helping young people navigate the transition into employment can make the difference between getting a job and sustaining one

Rigby says the experience of The King’s Trust, which is delivering the first phase of the Youth Jobs Guarantee in Scotland, is that the support required can vary considerably.

“The most important starting point is recognising that young people are not all in the same place. Some are ready to move straight into work with relatively little support, while others need more intensive help to prepare for, secure and sustain employment. Effective programmes avoid a one-size-fits-all approach.”

“For some, that means practical support such as travel costs, work clothing or equipment. For others, it may mean funding essential qualifications or licences, such as a CSCS card needed to access opportunities in construction.”

Rigby added that ongoing support after somebody starts work can also determine whether they stay there. “Helping young people navigate the transition into employment, build confidence and deal with challenges in the first few months can make the difference between getting a job and sustaining one.”

Some programmes have been effective at getting people into work, education or training. Image: Monkeybusinessimages

A similar approach is being tested in Stockport, where a community-led Work & Skills Fund has secured a second year of funding. Local voluntary and community organisations work with people facing barriers including poor mental health, isolation and caring responsibilities, starting with confidence and connection rather than simply job applications. Projects have included a community cafe created by women experiencing unemployment and isolation and a programme helping young people translate difficult life experiences into skills employers can recognise.

Those programmes are operating against a shortage of the jobs through which previous generations often entered the labour market. Work Foundation analysis found that the number of accessible “starter” jobs has fallen by 49% over the past decade, leaving roughly three young people who are NEET for every such vacancy nationally.

Henry Parkes, principal economist at the Institute for Public Policy Research, said when the latest figures were published: “The answer isn’t simply to tell young people to try harder. Where you live can make a huge difference to your chances, and in too many parts of the country there simply aren’t enough suitable first jobs to go around.”

The answer isn’t simply to tell young people to try harder

Government and employers are trying to create more of those first opportunities. Sainsbury’s announced in August that it will provide around 10,000 work experience and employability opportunities over the coming year, while the government’s new Youth Jobs Grant offers employers up to £3,000 when they take on an eligible 18- to 24-year-old who has been looking for work for at least six months.

Young people who have been looking for work for 18 months can meanwhile qualify for the Jobs Guarantee, which provides a fully funded six-month paid job. The first participants started work in August, too late to account for the latest fall in NEET numbers, but the programme offers a significant test of whether providing a real paid job can reconnect people who have spent long periods outside the labour market.

Positive News has also recently met some of the young entrepreneurs breathing new life into Britain’s market stalls, where relatively low start-up costs are allowing people to earn money, develop skills and establish a track record without first persuading an employer to give them their first opportunity.

Simpson says the 30,000 quarterly fall is encouraging, but sustained progress will require wider changes.

“We’d need to see evidence of the kind of systemic change outlined in the Milburn review to be confident that the trend is likely to be reversed,” she says.

Who Will Monster Season 5 Be About? Creator Teases Ideas

Who Will Monster Season 5 Be About? Creator Teases Ideas

With audiences currently gripped by the fourth iteration of the grisly Netflix anthology series Monster, its co-creator is already looking ahead to its future.

A fifth season of Monster is yet to be given the greenlight by Netflix, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from speculating about what a future incarnation of the controversial drama could focus on next.

TV superproducer Ryan Murphy has previously teased that he and his collaborators have a “‘maybe one day’ file” when it comes to Monster, which co-creator Ian Brennan shed some light on during an interview with People magazine.

He claimed there are “so many” potential subjects of Monster’s fifth season, revealing that serial Dennis Rader – known to true crime followers by his pseudonym BTK – was one that had been “talked about” in the past.

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan in 2010

“[He] is a fascinating one”, he added, before revealing Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway (the so-called Green River Killer) and even Luigi Mangione as ideas that had also been tossed around behind the scenes.

Ryan Murphy previously ruled out the idea of a season based on Ted Bundy, claiming that his crimes don’t provide enough of a fresh commentary on American culture and society.

“When you look at those crimes, what are the themes there?” he told Variety last year. “It doesn’t ask you any questions about society. It feels too murderous – not interesting enough.”

During his People interview, Ian Brennan agreed: “It’s all tricky because most murderers just aren’t that interesting. It’s horrific, and you don’t want to watch it.

“That’s what’s so tricky about the show is finding a subject matter that you can spend 10 hours with. It’s one thing to watch a movie about something, to spend 90 minutes in the head of someone, but six or seven hours is a whole other thing.”

He added that the trick is finding a subject that makes viewers want to “lean in”regardless of how gruesome what’s being conveyed on screen might be.

All four seasons of Monster – focussing on Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers, Ed Gein and Lizzie Borden – are available to stream on Netflix now.

Presley Gerber said he was ‘absolutely terrified’ when he underwent controversial addiction treatment six months before his death as he was praised by his family for ‘facing what I had been running from’

Presley Gerber said he was ‘absolutely terrified’ as he attempted to overcome his addictions with a controversial treatment six months before his death.

It was confirmed on Monday that Presley, the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, had died at age 27 following a years-long struggle with drugs, panic attacks and his mental health.

In March, Presley posted about his experience at a Mexico treatment clinic, where he underwent a ‘Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose’ – a single, high-dose administration of the naturally occurring psychoactive substance ibogaine.

Ibogaine is derived from an African shrub and is reported to help withdrawal symptoms and reset brain pathways. The high-dose is designed to induce a profound psychoactive and physiological ‘reset’.

Admitting he was ‘absolutely terrified’ to go through the controversial treatment, which is illegal in the US, Presley was supported by his parents and sister Kaia Gerber for his ‘courage’.

Cindy commented on the post: ‘You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!’

Kaia added: ‘that’s my brother I am so damn proud’ whilst Rande wrote: ‘I’m so proud of you and your courage.’

‘Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.’

Ibogaine is illegal in the US, where it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance but it is legal or permitted by prescription in countries like Canada and Brazil whilst it is used in specialised clinics in Mexico.

The model tagged Beond Ibogaine in Cancun, praising the clinic’s ‘incredible, caring, kind and on-their-sh*t team’. Treatment at the clinic starts at $12,500 for a 10-day programme.

Presley captioned his video: ‘Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose – quiet moment before everything changed.’

‘i was absolutely terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this (helps to not go into the situations you do that get ya there but that’s life sometimes.)’

‘(my mantras were love yourself and lis gotta be the last time for this reason. letting go of control didn’t come easy, but I trusted there was something bigger than me guiding it’.

‘I knew why i was there. I faced what I had been running from, and somewhere in all of it, i started finding my way back to myself…. We shall see…. Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.’

Beond Ibogaine commented on the post at the time, writing: ‘Thank you for sharing this so openly. We know how much courage that moment takes, and we’re really proud of you for facing it with so much honesty and heart.’

‘It was an honor to support you, and it means a lot to know you felt the care of the team and the connection around you. Wishing you so much strength and clarity for everything ahead.’

Beond Ibogaine’s website states that ‘Ingesting a large enough dose induces a temporary psychedelic experience that can last several hours, normally with no significant side effects.’

‘For hundreds of years, indigenous African peoples, such as those practicing the Bwiti tradition, have ingested large doses of Ibogaine in its raw root bark form for its spiritual and healing properties.’

‘Over the past thirty years, Ibogaine has been administered in various clinics around the world for medical treatment purposes, most often to treat drug dependence, including the use of ibogaine for alcoholism and ibogaine for opiate addiction.’

‘Beond Ibogaine treatment exists to end suffering from trauma, depression & addiction. Faster. Safer & Forever,’ the website adds.

‘Beond’s ibogaine clinic in Mexico combines the power of ibogaine, our proprietary safety protocols, and best-in-class behavioral therapies delivered by licensed credentialed Medical Doctors, Registered Nurses, and experienced Preparation & Integration Coaches.’

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said that Presley died on Sunday at a rehab facility in a devastating end to a battle he had increasingly laid bare in brutally candid social media posts. His cause of death was not revealed.

Last month, Presley’s sister Kaia revealed how his drug use and mental health struggles had affected their family.

‘When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,’ she told Vogue.

Last November, Presley revealed he had taken a step back from social media to ‘take care of my own mental health for a bit’.

One month later, he opened up about his personal life in a candid social media video.

Sister, Kaia, said her brother’s troubles made her want to be the ‘easy’ child.

She explained: ‘I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.’

He listed medication he takes for ‘night terrors’ and ‘panic attacks’.

‘I feel like honesty is the best policy,’ he began before sharing that he was on 1mg of Buprenorphine, used to treat both pain and opioid use disorders, twice a day.

Presley also shared that the ‘benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life’.

Benzodiazepines help ‘slow down activity in your brain and nervous system’ to treat ‘anxiety and related mental health conditions’, per Cleveland Clinic.

‘Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,’ he shared.

He did not go into detail about the ‘loss’ he referenced, but went on to explain that he also takes a dose of Xanax at night or when his ‘panic attacks are really, really bad’.

The model then listed Valium, admitting that he didn’t know exactly how much he’d been taking as he said, ‘Who f***ing knows anymore.’

He noted in the Instagram reel that ‘doctors say a lot of different things so it’s kind of scary. But hopefully between my research and their research and the world and God, we can finally figure this out.’

Presley also talked about the lack of ‘direction’ he has from doctors when it comes to his medication.

‘I’d like doctors to be like, “Take this three times a day.” But every psychiatrist I’ve had – and I’ve had 15 – are like, “Here’s 20 medications and take this if you feel like this, take this as needed.”

‘And I’m like, “No, don’t give me that much leeway.” I need some direction,’ he continued.

Kaia told Vogue that witnessing her brother’s honesty was ‘refreshing’.

‘My parents for most of our lives were very, very private and didn’t share anything – and now we have this absolute teacher, my brother, who says, “I’m gonna be very human for everyone.” There’s only so much you can hide from the world,’ she said.

Financial support for York venues in decline, data shows

Financial support for York venues in decline, data shows

Data obtained from a Freedom of Information request has shown that during the 2021/22 period funding from City of York Council and central Government amounted to £159,728 with large amounts of Government money being used through Covid support schemes such as the Assisted Restrictions Grant (ARG).

In 2025/26, the only disclosed revenue grants were £4,200 to the National Centre for Early Music and £6,537 to YPO Productions for Guildhall Orchestra concerts staged at the Barbican.

READ MORE: Investigation after marsh harrier shot in North Yorkshire

The FOI shows disclosed grant funding falling sharply after the pandemic, while the level of business-rates relief available to qualifying venues has also reduced in recent years.

A nationwide Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) Relief Scheme was lowered from 75 per cent in 2024/25 to 40 per cent in 2025/26 before finally ending on March 31, 2026.

The Government says the retail, hospitality and leisure relief scheme ended on March 31 and was replaced by permanently lower business-rates multipliers for eligible occupied properties.

During the pandemic, the scheme had been expanded to provide 100 per cent relief for qualifying retail, leisure and hospitality premises.

Since the start of the pandemic and subsequent national lockdowns, the UK late-night economy has shrunk by a reported 29 per cent according to the latest Night Time Economy Market Monitor.

Despite being fairly resilient, York has seen a number of key venues disappear in recent years including the well-known venue Victoria Vaults in Nunnery Lane.

A spokesperson for the City of York Council said: “Historically, between the financial years 2020/21 and 2025/26, the Government did not operate a specific standalone relief scheme for live music venues.

“Instead, these properties were supported via broader national initiatives, namely the Expanded Retail Discount and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) Relief Scheme.

“For the 2026/27 financial year, the government introduced a single, combined Pubs and Live Music Venue Relief scheme.

“The council currently records a total of 177 receiving this unified relief.

“Because this is a single, combined scheme, our systems do not separate premises operating solely as live music venues from those operating as pubs.”

Victoria Vaults closed its doors in December 2024 and plans were made for the building to be redeveloped into a cafe.

In the 2021/22 period Victoria Vaults received £16,000 under the ARG Grant, under the same grant York venues The Crescent and Fulford Arms received £30,800 and £21,000 respectively.

Earlier this year a campaign was launched for Victoria Vaults to be listed as a community asset.

Saturday Night Live UK Takes Digs At Ed Sheeran Controversy

Saturday Night Live UK Takes Digs At Ed Sheeran Controversy

Unsurprisingly, Ed Sheeran took a fair few knocks when Saturday Night Live UK returned for the second instalment of its new season over the weekend.

Saturday’s live show came at the end of a week of controversy for the Lego House singer, in light of him bowing to pressure to drop Macklemore as the opening act of his Loop Tour, following comments made by the rapper on stage in support of Palestine.

SNL UK’s episode kicked off with a comedy sketch in which Larry Dean’s Prince Charles was introduced to an AI-bot modelled off Princess Diana (played, naturally, by Jack Shep), who became autonomous and incited a war between humans and artificial intelligence.

Annabel Marlow as Ed Sheeran on Saturday Night Live UK

Cast member Annabel Marlow then entered dressed as Ed Sheeran, declaring: “I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation – you see, I was just outside sitting on the fence.”

“I don’t want to take sides,” the Ed character added. “I don’t want to alienate any of my fans. Humans or my robots. You know, sometimes, when it comes to conflicts, the bravest thing you can do is to say nothing at all.”

Meanwhile, the show’s regular Weekend Update segment went in even harder on the Grammy winner.

Comic Ania Magliano began: “The Israel-Palestine conflict just got serious. That’s right, Ed Sheeran’s US tour is under threat.

“Sheeran’s support act, Macklemore, was dropped after saying ‘Free Palestine’ on stage. Will Sheeran have to cancel the tour? There’s a very real risk that he won’t.”

“Genuinely, though, this crisis is the worst thing that has happened to Ed Sheeran fans since their head injury,” she continued.

Paddy Young later added: “To his credit, [Ed Sheeran] has been a long-standing supporter of Ukraine. Say what you want about Ed, but he’s always been a passionate advocate of causes that are allowed.”

SNL UK aired around the time that Ed resumed his Loop Tour for the first time since his remaining support acts and backing band pulled out of the shows amid the controversy, following Macklemore’s departure from the tour.

During the gig, Ed reflected on what he described as “one of the worst weeks of my life”, claiming that “so many people” he’s “known for years and years and years” had been “falling out of my life” in recent days.

He also somewhat clarified his stance on the Middle East conflict before telling fans: “The world is a scary place right now. America is a scary place right now. This gives hope. Thank you so much, Philadelphia.”

Saturday Night Live UK continues this weekend at 10pm on Saturday night on Sky and Now, with Amelia Dimoldenberg on guest hosting duties.

Newcastle paedophile Michael Burke cast shadow over three girls' lives

Michael Burke, now 66, abused all three girls while they were school-aged.

He abused two of the victims in the 1990s, with his most recent offences committed within the past decade.

Northumbria Police launched an investigation after all three victims reported sexual assaults and rapes.

The woman said Burke overpowered them and sometimes assaulted his victims while they were asleep.

When arrested and questioned, he either denied the offences or repeatedly answered “no comment”.

Paedophile Michael Peter Burke given prison sentences totalling 24 years for the sexual abuse of three girls

After a complex investigation by Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding Department, Burke, of Framlington Place, Newcastle, was charged with various counts of abuse.

He continued to deny the offences and absconded while on bail, forcing police to hunt him down and re-arrest him.

After a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in June, he was convicted of offences against all three women.

The convictions included five sexual assaults, two rapes and three indecent assaults. The latter offences took place before the Sexual Offences Act of 2003 came into force.

He was remanded in custody after the guilty verdicts and returned to court on Friday, September 18, where he was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Judge Carolyn Scott also ordered him to remain on the sex offenders’ register for life and imposed lifelong restraining orders protecting all three women.

They each provided Victim Personal Statements, detailing the lasting impact of Burke’s abuse on their lives.

One said the abuse devastated her mental health, led her to attempt suicide and resulted in a PTSD diagnosis.

She said: “One of the worst and most long-lasting effects of what happened to me was the way it affected my understanding of consent, control and my ability to protect myself.

“The abuse did not simply remain in my childhood, but it followed me into my teenage years and adulthood, influencing the way I behaved, the decisions I made and the way I viewed myself.

“For many years, I thought I had learned how to live with everything that happened.

“The trial changed that.

“Having to revisit that period of my life has brought back memories and emotions that I had spent years learning how to manage.

“I have experienced sleepless nights and a significant deterioration in my wellbeing.”

Another woman said she saw Burke as “a very evil man” after the abuse.

She said the abuse left her struggling to sleep and lying awake for much of the night.

When she eventually fell asleep, she soon woke after dreaming about Burke.

“I could never then sleep as I thought he would get to me.”

She said: “The way I tried to deal with this was to just try and put it in the back of my head.

“I became so angry towards everyone.

“I was upset all the time and did not know who I could trust anymore.

“When we had the trial, I was scared, feeling we would not be believed and he would get away with it.

“Since the trial, I have had a lot of nightmares, in which I see his face and then wake up thinking he is on top of me.

“In some of my nightmares I am back in court, but I am alone and he is the only other person there.

“I am struggling to sleep and should go to the doctors to see if they can help me.”

She added: “I hate Michael Burke for what he has done to me.

“I cannot put into words how much damage he has done.

“I have so much anger and hate towards him.

“He has caused that much damage we will never be the same again, because of what he has done to us all.”

Detective Constable Colin Lether led the Northumbria Police investigation.

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, he said: “Despite how much time has passed between the initial offending and the most recent, it has become clear that Michael Burke is a paedophile with a sustained interest in young girls.

“It’s evident from the testimonies of the victim-survivors just how much Burke’s offending has, and continues to, affect them.”

Det Con Lether added: “I am pleased that Burke’s horrific offending has finally come to light because these three women bravely came forward and allowed police to investigate.

“All three have finally had the chance to put their abuser before the courts and to seek justice.

“I hope they can now move forward in whatever way they may be able.”
