England to make major change to kit after striking sponsorship deal with Lloyds Bank

The back of England rugby’s shirts will carry a sponsor’s name for the first time after Lloyds Bank struck a lucrative new partnership with the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

The multi-million pound per year deal will see the bank’s famous black horse logo and name emblazoned above the player names on the kits of England’s men and women, beginning with the Red Roses’ clash with Australia in Manchester this weekend.

The agreement will see Lloyds becomes one of the RFU’s leading partners, with significant investment expected into the community game, and is another significant boost to the union’s finances.

O2 have been England’s front-of-shirt sponsor for 30 years, while Allianz took the naming rights to Twickenham in 2024 in a 10-year sponsorship deal.

“This is a truly significant partnership for the RFU and marks an important moment for rugby in England. Lloyds is one of the country’s most recognised and proudly British brands, and their commitment extends far beyond visibility on the England shirt,” RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said.

“Together, we have a shared ambition to grow the game from the grass roots up, creating more opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to play, enjoy and be part of rugby. What makes this relationship particularly exciting is its potential to make a real difference across every level of the game, from local clubs to our England teams.

“Lloyds shares our belief in rugby’s power to bring communities together, and we are delighted to welcome them into the rugby family as we deliver our vision for the future together.”

Many other nations already have back-of-shirt sponsors, while Lloyds will also feature prominently on England’s anthem jackets and training bibs. As per long-term competition regulations, England’s match kit at next year’s World Cup will be shorn of sponsors.

In a further boost to the RFU’s coffers, all three of their warm-up games ahead of that tournament are expected to be held at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

Coronation Street’s Jodie takes ‘wicked’ action after discovering family secret

Coronation Street’s Jodie Ramsey discovered that Bethany and Kit had slept together on Wednesday night’s episode and now fans are wondering what the mysterious character will do next

Coronation Street’s Jodie Ramsey discovered that Bethany and Kit had slept together on Wednesday night’s episode. The cafe waitress, played by Olivia Frances-Brown, turned up as the long-lost sister of Shona Platt during the programme’s crossover with Emmerdale.

Since then, the mysterious character has managed to get herself intertwined in just about everyone’s problems and caused trouble in one way or another but viewers are none the wiser as to what her game is.

As ever, a lot is going on in the Platt family, and with Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) in prison having been charged with murder, her daughter Bethany recently had a one-night stand with DC Kit Green.

The police officer almost became Bethany’s stepdad until Sarah broke things off with him while she was behind bars. However, Kit is still very much part of the family unit having agreed to take care of Sarah’s son Harry whilst she is imprisoned.

Bethany was trying to brush their one night stand off as a ” a moment of madness”, as Kit lamented: “It should never have happened at all! You know, of all the women I could have slept with. Leave it, eh?”

Unbeknownst to them both, Jodie, whose sister is Bethany’s aunt, was listening to their conversation and looked delighted to make such a discovery.

It wasn’t until the very end of the episode, however, that Jodie poured a glass of wine, pulled her phone from her pocket and played the conversation back on her phone, having recorded every word.

Reacting to the twist, one fan wrote on X: “Wow so Jodie recorded the convo! she’s so wicked,” and another said: “Hate and love Jodie, she makes me mad at times! just shows the actress is doing a good job when they make you mad.”

A third wrote: “Jodie is seriously twisted,” and fourth said: “So someone overhears Kit and Bethany talking about sleeping together AND OF COURSE IT’S F****** JODIE!!! OF COURSE IT IS.”

Actress Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt, recently spoke of the ramifications that will come with her decision to sleep with the man who was almost her stepdad.

She said: “I think it was definitely a major mistake and she is feeling incredibly guilty. That guilt is going to weigh on her for quite a while.

“”There has been a lot going on recently. Bethany has been holding everything together for everyone and trying to look after Harry, while Kit has his own separate issues.

“They were in the flat together and one thing led to another. It clearly causes many problems between them moving forward. For both of them, it was a massive mistake.”

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITV X.

Bolton woman who made false rape claims has longer jail term

Stacey Sharples, 31, from Farnworth, was originally sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

But this was raised to seven years after the Attorney General, Ellie Reeves KC MP, referred the case to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

Sharples made the false allegations against men she had met online between 2013 and 2020.

Ellie Reeves KC MP, the Attorney General, said: “Stacey Sharples lied, repeatedly and deliberately, causing significant harm to ten victims and wasting hundreds of hours of police time that should have gone towards supporting genuine victims.

“Rare cases like this must not discourage genuine victims from coming forward.

“Every report of rape is rightly taken seriously and treated with the care it deserves.

Stacy Sharples (Image: GMP)

“Anyone who seeks to exploit or undermine genuine acts of violence against women and girls must be held to account.

“I thank the police for their diligence in uncovering the truth, and my thoughts remain with the victims who were falsely accused.”

Her repeated and sustained false claims led to eight separate police investigations and resulted in most of the accused men being arrested and detained in custody.

The investigations took months to resolve and are estimated to have consumed more than 550 hours of police time.

Victims described the serious impact the allegations had on their lives, including loss of employment and relationships.

Several also reported lasting damage to their mental health and said they were now unable to form new relationships.

Sharples was originally sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on March 11, 2026, after being convicted of 10 counts of perverting the course of justice.

Her sentence was increased by the Court of Appeal on September 9, 2026.

‘An injustice’ or ‘righting a wrong’: British Jews debate sanctions move

Published

A cut of of Anthony Zurcher wearing a suit and tie in front of a red, black, grey and blue graphic background featuring the US Capitol Building

“It’s terrible for Israel and for Israel’s future, it’s not what Judaism teaches and it’s deeply wrong”, he added.

Supported by other Rabbis in the liberal and progressive UK Jewish communities, Rabbi Wittenberg believes that it is possible to support Israel, be concerned for the safety of British Jews, and that it is right for the UK government to take action to protect Israelis and Palestinians.

However, he also said he was “extremely sad that it’s come to this” and that he shared the “concerns of the Jewish community leadership that people will use this for antisemitism and for demonising Israel even further”.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, who represents the Orthodox community, previously said the sanctions marked a “truly dark day” and placed British Jews at greater risk of attacks.

In Golders Green – where ambulances run by a Jewish medical charity were set on fire and two visibly Jewish men were stabbed in what police called a terror attack earlier this year – there was concern the government’s actions against Israel would increase attacks against British Jews.

“It’s so tricky because, in principle, I agree with opposing these new settlements,” Michael Cohen, who works for a Jewish charity, told the BBC.

But he added: “The timing of it, I think, was completely… just self interest for the Labour Party, signalling before a by-election, before the party conference.”

He said the practical impact of the move would be “almost zero”.

One woman, who runs a jewellery shop that was was twice cordoned off due to incidents in Golders Green, was very critical of the sanctions and said she would “make it my mission” to continue to buy Israeli goods whenever she could.

“We have to [support] our own because no one else is going to”, Deborah Miller told the BBC.

At the end of the week, Jewish congregations will celebrate Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.

Police are already increasing security around Jewish areas to protect communities who have faced multiple attacks this year and are fearful of more.

The number of antisemitic incidents recorded across the UK since the start of the year is up by a fifth compared to last year, figures show.

The Community Security Trust (CST), an organisation that provides security support to the Jewish community, recorded 1,926 incidents of anti-Jewish hate across the UK in the first six months of 2026.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales, external, estimates that only 44% of hate crime incidents between April 2022 and March 2025 came to the attention of the police.

Westminster committee WILL launch a probe in wake of the Peter Murrell scandal

Published

on

Peter Murrell pleaded guilty to embezzling over £400,000

An inquiry into the fallout from the Peter Murrell scandal has been launched by a powerful Westminster committee after Holyrood refused to act.

The Scottish Affairs select committee has announced that it will probe key aspects of the scandal, which saw the former SNP chief executive jailed for embezzling more than £400,000 from his party.

It will also examine the case for breaking up the role of Scotland’s Lord Advocate, which is both the head of the prosecution service and also the Scottish Government’s top legal adviser.

It follows concerns about the former Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain tipping off the First Minister about key details of the court hearing for Murrell, who is Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband.

The two inquiries were launched after SNP and Green MSPs united to vote down calls for a Scottish Parliament inquiry into the matter and three Holyrood committees refused to carry out joint work with the Scottish Affairs committee on the issue.

Andrew Bowie, Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, the Shadow Energy Secretary, said: ‘Sneaky John Swinney pulled out all the stops to block a Holyrood inquiry into Murrell’s dodgy dealings.

Patricia Ferguson has confirmed the Scottish Affairs Committee will open an investigation into the scandal

‘The former CEO of the SNP stole hundreds of thousands of pounds from his own party and got away with it for so long because Sturgeon and Swinney ignored and silenced whistleblowers who sounded the alarm.

‘The Scottish Affairs Committee is rightly stepping in and shining a light on the murky matters that the SNP would rather never saw the light of day, including the glaring conflict at the heart of the Lord Advocate’s dual role.

‘Scots deserve the truth about how this scandal happened and why it went undetected for so long.’

MPs on the Scottish Affairs Committee met yesterday afternoon to agree the two inquiries in the wake of the Murrell scandal.

One will look at the Electoral Commission’s oversight of the funding and governance of political parties in Scotland, as well as the policies, processes and safeguards associated with the distribution of Short Money to political parties.

It could assess whether any public money was involved in Murrell’s crimes.

Another will assess the cases for and against splitting up the Lord Advocate dual roles, and the different options for reform. This will include any ‘conflicts of interest’ between the two roles.

The SNP, which has opposed a committee inquiry at Holyrood or Westminster, has so far refused to say if it will co-operate with the inquiry.

Westminster select committees have the power to require named witnesses to attend in person to give oral evidence and to require that specified papers be provided to them.

If someone refuses to give evidence or provide requested material, they could ultimately face sanctions including admonishment, fines and imprisonment.

Scottish Labour acting leader Dame Jackie Baillie said: ‘We were always clear that our preference would have been for a Scottish Parliament inquiry into these matters – however, the SNP has thwarted any such inquiry at every opportunity.

‘It is therefore welcome that the Scottish Affairs Committee has now confirmed it will investigate the role of the Lord Advocate, and the Electoral Commission’s oversight of the funding and governance of political parties in Scotland.

‘Peter Murrell’s crimes have shaken trust in Scottish politics, and the SNP have done absolutely nothing to try and build that trust back – choosing evasion rather than scrutiny amid calls for an inquiry.

‘The people of Scotland deserve the truth, and they deserve answers about these serious issues.’

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: ‘John Swinney has done everything he can to block an inquiry into Operation Branchform.

‘The SNP are running scared because an inquiry would question how Peter Murrell was emboldened by his wife Nicola Sturgeon and his childhood friend John Swinney who shut down legitimate questions and concerns.

‘There are also questions about why only one person was charged and whether Police Scotland agreed with that decision.

‘And, crucially, why Murrell was granted a favourable plea deal that not only spared Sturgeon’s blushes but handed the SNP a massive electoral advantage.

‘It is entirely right that the UK parliament inquiry also establishes whether any public money was stolen. The public deserve the full truth no matter how uncomfortable it is for the SNP.’

John Cooper, the Tory MP for Dumfries and Galloway who is pressing for Westminster legislation to split up the Lord Advocate role, said: ‘The Murrell scandal has exposed the glaring conflict at the heart of the Lord Advocate’s dual role.

‘Having the same person serve as the Government’s chief legal adviser and head of the prosecution service is an obvious anomaly that has no place in a modern justice system.

‘I have been campaigning to split these roles because the status quo is simply not sustainable, and I welcome this inquiry finally giving Parliament the opportunity to properly examine the case for reform.

‘The Scottish Government cannot continue to ignore the damage this conflict of interest does to confidence in our justice system.’

Patricia Ferguson, chairman of the Scottish Affairs Committee, said: ‘The role of the Lord Advocate is unique, combining responsibilities as both the Scottish Government’s chief legal adviser and the head of Scotland’s prosecution service.

‘The handling of Operation Branchform has once again brought to the fore the challenges this dual role can present. It’s right that the appropriateness of the Lord Advocate’s dual role is properly considered, and we’ll explore the advantages and disadvantages of the current arrangement, and possible options for reform.

‘Alongside this, we’ll open an inquiry examining the Electoral Commission’s oversight of the funding and governance of political parties in Scotland, and the policies, processes and safeguards associated with the distribution of Short Money.

‘Transparency and accountability are fundamental to our democratic institutions, and we look forward to gathering evidence on whether our current systems are working effectively.

‘We will undertake this work alone, following confirmation from relevant Holyrood committees that they do not wish to work jointly with us on these important issues, which interact with devolved competence.’

The SNP has been asked whether it will co-operate with the inquiries.

Major death confirmed in EastEnders as new spoilers reveal what happens next | Soaps
A devastating end to a big week confirmed (Picture: BBC / Metro)

EastEnders was home to carnage and devastation aplenty once more as new bride Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) was left wailing in despair after her big day ended in complete and utter disaster.

The iconic show schemer thought she’d found her one true love in Max Branning (Jake Wood), who let her down colossally by ending their marriage just hours after they exchanged vows.

Max was rushed to hospital with a heart attack due to the stress of ex Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), who he claims to be in love with, threatening to expose his secret affair with Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy).

After a close call, he resolved to listen to his heart (literally) and ended things with Cindy, before confessing his love to Linda. Cindy was devastated but Max will pay given that she’s just uncovered his sordid affair with Priya.

Elsewhere, Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) antagonised her loved ones after she stole Charlie’s cab and refused to apologise to Zack Hudson (James Farrar), who got attacked by the owner of said cab when he showed up at the Vic demanding his motor back.

With it all kicking off in Alert Square, you’re no doubt eager to find out what’s in store tomorrow – and we’ve got you covered!

What happens next in EastEnders? New spoilers for Thursday, September 10

Following Max and Cindy’s nuptials, emotional are at an all-time high in Albert Square tomorrow. The question is: with Cindy having uncovered the truth about Priya, just what will she do?

And as for Max? Last we saw him he was confessing his love for Linda, who admitted that she feels the same. Will the pair actually resolve to give things a go?

The emotional scenes will transpire over the next few episodes, with Kat set to find her daughter’s lifeless body in the aftermath of what transpires tomorrow.

The question is: will the mother and daughter duo’s final exchange be one of anger?

Or will they manage to smooth things out before devastation strikes?

EastEnders airs these scenes Thursday September 10 at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer

Trump’s travel halted as emergency plane slide deployed on problematic new Air Force One

Published

The emergency slide of Air Force One is deployed ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's trip to the Republican National Midterm Convention, at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, U.S., September 9

Donald Trump was left waiting aboard Marine One after an emergency evacuation slide deployed from the door of his controversial new Air Force One, delaying his departure for the Republican Midterm Convention.

‘They were doing a check on the slide. I think it takes 15 minutes,’ Trump told reporters after finally stepping off the helicopter.

‘They were checking it before’ the flight Trump continued, adding, ‘they want to make sure everything works perfectly.’

Trump remained inside the helicopter well after it touched down, with the door of Marine One closed, according to multiple reports.

As the helicopter rolled to a stop, the older blue-and-white Air Force One was moved out of its hangar and into position a few hundred yards behind the Qatari-gifted jet, then lowered its front and rear steps.

Minutes later, the new plane had its inflatable emergency slide unfurled from the front door on the right-hand side, opposite the left-hand door the president normally uses to board.

After speaking with the press for a prolonged period as the slide was being dealt with, the president boarded the craft as the cameras were still rolling.

The White House did not immediately explain the delay.

This comes after growing concerns about the new aircraft, which Trump abandoned in Turkey in July on the advice of the Secret Service.

The president was secretly spirited off on the Qatari-gifted presidential jet in an airline catering truck and flown to England on a smaller plane.

iPhone Duo officially unveiled: Apple's first foldable smartphone features a book-like design - but at $1,999 it is Apple's most expensive smartphone ever

The moment tech fans have been waiting for is finally here, as Apple officially unveils the iPhone Duo.

Apple’s long-awaited first foldable device features a book-style design, with an inner screen that is wider than it is tall when opened out.

Its massive 7.6-inch Super Retina inner display is 80 per cent larger than the 18 Pro, coupled with a 5.4-inch outer display.

The iPhone duo is available in two colours – night sky and star white- and is constructed from titanium.

Thanks to its ‘effortlessly smooth’ hinge, the tech giant claims its first foldable will be even more durable and should keep annoying screen creasing to a minimum.

However, the iPhone Duo features Touch ID for unlocking rather than Face ID, which may come as a disappointment to some fans.

Launching the product from the company’s Cupertino headquarters, new CEO John Ternus said: ‘iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.’

However, this won’t come cheap, with prices starting at $1,999 making this Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever.

But the iPhone Duo isn’t the only new device on offer, as Apple has also launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside new Apple Watches and AirPods.

The moment tech fans have been waiting for is finally here, as Apple officially unveils the iPhone Duo – the company’s first ever foldable

iPhone Duo

Apple’s most exciting update in years finally brings the tech giant into the foldable market.

Although Apple is a few years late to the game, it appears that the company has been taking their time to bring a refined product to market.

The iPhone Duo shares the same squat, book-like shape as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, meaning the screen is wider than it is tall when opened.

Both the inner and outer screens share the same 1.4 aspect ratio, ensuring that apps don’t get distorted or leave dead space when changing between views.

The outer display measures 5.4 inches, while the inner screen extends out to 7.6 inches.

Users will be able to use the iPhone Duo in any orientation or position, leaving it half open to prop up and watch movies hands-free or holding it partially folded like a book.

Thanks to the new A20 Pro chipset, Apple’s new foldable will be able to accommodate multitasking, running different apps on either side of the screen.

The outer display measures 5.4 inches, while the inner screen extends out to 7.6 inches

Apple says the screen will also support the use of Apple Pencil just like an iPad, making it the first iPhone to do so.

On the back, the iPhone Duo uses the same 48-megapixel camera as the iPhone 18 Pro.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

On the outside, these high–end phones look just like their predecessors – the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max – but with some big upgrades on the inside.

The new devices feature improved battery life, a more powerful chip, and a significantly improved camera system with the all–new mechanical aperture feature.

Launching the product from the company’s Cupertino headquarters, new CEO John Ternus said: ‘There’s no product in the world better designed to be your intelligent personal hub than iPhone.’

The iPhone 18 Pro is available in four colours: Black, Silver, a new colour called Glacier, and Burgundy.

And, after a long wait, the new iPhone will finally come with the upgraded Siri AI originally promised as part of Apple Intelligence.

However,at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively these are Apple’s most expensive non-folding smartphones yet.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available to pre–order from Saturday, September 12, and available from September 18.

But the iPhone 18 Pro isn’t the only new gadget on offer, as Apple has also launched the AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

AirPods 5

While some earlier rumours had suggested new AirPods Pro with a built–in camera would be on the way, the tech giant has instead revealed an upgrade to its standard AirPods.

The AirPods 5 keep the same open–ear design from the AirPods 4, but with some key upgrades.

Apple says that the new AirPods will feature ‘richer, more detailed sound’, as well as active noise cancellation (ANC) as standard.

The company claims that its new open–ear ANC system cuts out 50 per cent more external noise than the AirPods as well as featuring a more natural transparency mode.

Dave Pakula, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, said: ‘We’re thrilled that with AirPods 5, we’re able to bring Active Noise Cancellation — one of our most beloved features — to our most affordable AirPods’

Battery life has also been improved, with up to five hours of ANC playback on a charge – one hour longer than the AirPods 4 – and up to 22 hours with the charging case.

As is to be expected with Apple making a big deal over its new AI capabilities, the AirPods will feature Siri AI compatibility for walk–and–talk AI conversations as well as live translation.

Users can even respond to Siri with head gestures such as nodding or shaking the head.

The headphones are available in two variations: a standard option and a more expensive version that includes an on–stem volume control system from the AirPods Pro called Volume Swipe.

The cheaper version is available for $129, with the more expensive option priced at $149 (UK price to be confirmed).

Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4

Apple has released two upgrades to its lineup of wearables, the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The Series 12 boasts a new ‘health sensing system’ designed to deliver better heart rate and heart rate variability measurements.

Apple claims that this is now the most accurate heart rate sensing of any wearable on the market, after conducting a ‘scientifically rigorous’ study of over 1,000 people.
