Graham Platner’s Platner’s disastrous candidacy exposes rifts that could dampen Democrats’ Senate hopes

Published

on

Graham Platner seen on stage at a microphone. his hand is over his mouth

She is concerned, however, that it will be difficult for voters to coalesce around any new candidate in just three months.

“The thing I’m the most worried about is we run somebody and he or she loses, and then we spend the next four years pointing fingers at whose fault that was,” she said.

In primary contests across the country this year, Democrats regularly opted for outsider congressional candidates offering a vivid vision for what the party should stand for and promising to fight for their beliefs in the face of Republican resistance.

Platner was one of the earliest and most prominent examples of this trend. With his gravelly voice, scruffy appearance and working-class back story, he gained a passionate following both in Maine and nationally.

He presented himself as a candidate who could advocate for liberal policies – like universal healthcare, wealth taxes, and low-cost housing – in a way that appealed to the kind of rural voters who have moved away from Democrats recently.

A win in November would have given Democratic progressives a chance to see blue-collar liberalism triumphing in battleground states like Maine.

And that, in turn, could have become a compelling argument for nominating a left-wing presidential candidate in 2028.

Now, that opportunity is likely dashed.

That Platner survived the series of scandals as long as he did was in part a testament to Democrats’ hunger for a different kind of candidate. It also, however, underlined the risks of opting for charismatic political neophytes who haven’t received close scrutiny before they run for higher office.

With Platner’s exit, a group of more traditional candidates are already expressing interest in stepping in – including a handful who unsuccessfully ran for governor and one of the state’s open House seats last month. They have recent campaign experience and some name recognition.

Troy Jackson, a former Maine Senate leader, campaigned side-by-side with Platner during his bid for governor, and came in third.

Nirav Shah, a state epidemiologist who gained prominence through regular public appearances during the Covid pandemic, finished a close second.

Shenna Bellows, the Maine secretary of state, is known for her lawsuit to block Trump administration attempts to gain access to state voter data. She was the party’s nominee in 2014 but was soundly beaten by Collins.

According to Melcher, many Platner supporters will be hit hard because of the connection they made with their unconventional candidate. He believes they will ultimately back his replacement, however, because of the high stakes in this race.

Many Maine Democrats supported Platner with some reluctance because of his past scandals, he added, and this latest twist might end up a blessing in disguise for the party.

“If they play their cards right, I think that they will be fine and, with some voters, even better than they would have been before,” he said, “as long as the party doesn’t handle this in a way they see as disrespectful or a cabal taking things over.”

The clock is ticking, however, and Collins awaits whoever emerges from whatever process Democrats ultimately follow. She has proven a formidable adversary for Democrats for 30 years, most recently defeating a better-funded opponent in 2020 despite polls showing her trailing right up to election day.

“It’s not as though it was going to be easy before, and now it’s hard,” said Melcher. “Beating Collins was always going to be hard.”

How ultra-rich foreign investors are hollowing out London and inflating the housing market

“[We cannot] ignore London’s position as a global prime city and the financialisation of the housing market – it’s conceivable we risk a ‘doughnut’ London, where people move from the centre to the outskirts, because they cannot afford a family home in areas where they’ve grown up in,” Dr Bourne added. “Their property in the centre of London is then converted into an empty home.

Jennifer Grey Announces Mum Jo Wilder Died ‘On Her Own Terms’

Jennifer Grey is mourning the loss of her mother, Jo Wilder, who she says died “by her own choosing” at age 94 shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The Dirty Dancing star made the announcement on Instagram Thursday on Instagram, describing her late mum as “brave” and “deep”.

“My mother, Jo Wilder, passed away on 4 July at 94 – by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived,” Jennifer wrote alongside a carousel of throwback photos.

“A week earlier, she learned she had lung cancer. True to who she was, she chose grace over fear, understanding that leaving this world with dignity is an honor, not a tragedy.”

She added that while her mother had been “a promising young actress on the New York stage in her youth”, she had ultimately chosen to prioritise motherhood over her career.

“If she’d chosen ambition over my brother and me, we never would have had the mother we had,” the actor wrote, alluding to her brother, James Katz, who works as a chef.

She concluded her note with: “I love you, Mom. Thank you for showing me how to do it all, even this, with grace.”

As of Thursday afternoon, Jennifer’s post had drawn an outpouring of condolences, including several from her famous friends in Hollywood.

“How lucky you are to be able to write such a tribute to your obviously awesome AF mom,” musician Richard Marx wrote. “I’m sure she was so proud of the woman you are. Sending love.”

Added actor Julianne Moore: “So sorry for your loss.”

Jo Wilder was born in Brooklyn, New York, and made her Broadway debut in the musical She Loves Me in 1963.

Throughout the late 1950s and early ’60s, she appeared on a number of television series, including How To Marry A Millionaire and The Detectives.

In 1958, Jo married fellow actor Joel Grey. Jennifer Grey later recalled her mother realising “it wasn’t practical for there to be more than one actor in the family, and that, according to her, my dad ‘needed it more’”.

Jo Wilder and Joel Grey split in 1982 but appeared to remain on good terms.

“I could sense an intensity fueling her singing of show tunes and opera around the house, the volume and vibrato reverberating against the tiled bathroom walls as she bathed me, more suitable for a stage than a bath-time melody,” Jennifer wrote in her 2022 memoir, Out Of The Corner, as reported by USA Today.

“Like she’d been cast out prematurely, unfairly rejected from her intended trajectory.”

Joel Grey went on to enjoy major success on the stage and screen, and in 1973, won an Oscar for his portrayal of the Emcee in the film adaptation of the musical Cabaret.

He and his ex-wife divorced in 1982, and in 2015, he came out as gay at age 82.

Despite their split, the pair appeared to be on good terms and continued to make public appearances together.

Jennifer, who is currently at work on a much-anticipated sequel to Dirty Dancing, has celebrated her mum on a number of occasions over the years.

“I’m so grateful that I still have my mother,” she said during an appearance on Live With Kelly And Mark in 2022.

“She’s such a beautiful, beautiful woman, and she’s been just such an incredible champion of mine.”

Five cleaning hacks everyone should know

Five cleaning hacks everyone should know

Cleaning grout is another hated job. But if yours is discoloured or you see the beginnings of black mould, this homemade paste will restore all the original colour without you having to individually scrub every line.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 a cup of bicarbonate of soda (also known as baking soda)
  • 2 to 3 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tsp washing up liquid

Mix the ingredients together until they form a thick paste; add more bicarb if it’s too runny and a splash of peroxide if it’s too thick. Then, do the following:

  1. Apply the paste directly onto grout lines using an old toothbrush or cleaning brush.
  2. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Scrub any stubborn stains with the brush.
  4. Remove the paste with a damp cloth.
  5. Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water.

Bicarbonate of soda lifts grime and acts as a mild abrasive while hydrogen peroxide breaks down staining, mould and mildew. The washing up liquid cuts through grease and soap scum too, meaning the paste doesn’t sit on top of bathroom residue.

Tip five: Clean shower doors with a magic eraser

Count Binface Responds To Jenricks By Election Attack

Count Binface Responds To Jenricks By Election Attack

Count Binface has hit back at Robert Jenrick after he launched a bitter attack on his bid to defeat Nigel Farage in the Clacton by-election.

The Reform UK MP said that after two years in the House of Commons, the party’s leader was used to taking on “people who’ve got robotic voices and a head full of rubbish”.

He made the comment while presenting an LBC phone-in in which he was savaged for defending Farage’s decision to stand down to trigger the by-election.

However, the move has backfired after Labour, the Tories, the Greens, the Lib Dems and even Restore Britain all dismissed it as a stunt and said they would not stand any candidates.

So far, Count Binface – a comedy character who regularly stands in by-elections – is Farage’s only serious rival.

On LBC, Jenrick said: “I do think Count Binface is an interesting character.

“Nigel has been in the House of Commons now for two years, so he’s used to people who’ve got robotic voices and a head full of rubbish, so I’m sure he’ll be able to take on Binface.”

But speaking to HuffPost UK, Count Binface hit back: “Has Robert Jenrick just confirmed that I would fit perfectly well inside the House of Commons?

“So Reform UK confirms Binface is not a novelty candidate?”

The by-election, which is expected to take place on August 13, takes place amid mounting controversy over Farage and Reform UK’s finances.

Parliament’s standards commissioner is investigating a £5 million gift Farage received from a Thailand-based crypto billionaire shortly before he ran to become an MP and did not declare.

It has also emerged that the Reform boss received financial support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell.

The Times also reported today that the Metropolitan Police are investigating donations at least £500,000 made to Reform by Cottrell’s mother, Fiona.

Moygashel: Bonfire topped with replica mosque set alight before bid to remove hate display

Published

on

Belfast Live

The smouldering remains of the bonfire were continuing to burn on Friday morning

A loyalist bonfire which was widely condemned after a replica of a mosque was placed on top has been lit before police could remove the display.

The smouldering remains of the bonfire were continuing to burn in the village of Moygashel in Co Tyrone on Friday morning.

A man is due to appear in court on Friday charged with incitement to hatred.

Political and religious leaders had criticised the placing of the mosque on top of the fire, which had been scheduled to be lit on Friday night, and police had faced calls to act.

Signs saying: “Secure our borders” and: “End the threat of radical Islam” have also been placed on the pyre.

Shortly after midnight, in a social media post, the Moygashel Bonfire Association said: “Due to confirmation of contractors moving in and removing the bonfire, the decision has been made to light it asap.”

The PSNI said it had “commenced a significant and complex policing operation to remove a hate display from the Moygashel bonfire”.

It said the operation was at an “advanced stage when the bonfire was lit”.

A spokesperson said: “Had the bonfire not been lit police would have secured the site and removed the offending material and seized it as evidence.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s investigation into this hate motivated crime is ongoing.

Chief Superintendent Norman Haslett said: “Hate crime has no place in our society and will not be tolerated.

“That is why we commenced a proactive policing operation to take action and remove the hate display from Moygashel Bonfire.

“Before police arrival, the bonfire was set alight a day in advance to prevent removal of the criminal material.

“Where there is evidence that offences have been committed, we will take robust action.

“As part of our ongoing investigation, a 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred.

“He is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Friday July 10. As is normal procedure, all charges are reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

Police were maintaining a low-key presence in the village on Friday morning.

The bonfire site in Moygashel has attracted controversy in previous years.

Last year, there was condemnation after effigies of migrants in a boat were burned on the Moygashel fire.

Eleventh night bonfires will be lit across Northern Ireland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings ahead of the Orange Order’s July 12 parades on Monday.

While most of the bonfires pass off without incident, several have become the focus of contention due to the placing of flags, effigies and election posters on the structures before they are ignited.

What went right this week: Europe breathes easier, plus more

What went right this week: Europe breathes easier, plus more
‘Encouraging progress’ as millions gain electricity

Some 800 million people have gained access to electricity since 2010, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), which said the figures highlighted “encouraging progress”.

Despite the gains, however, progress remains “too slow” and uneven. The WHO warned that the global electricity access rate stagnated at 92% in 2024, with Sub-Saharan Africa increasingly left behind.

Achieving universal access by 2030 – one of the United Nations’ (UN) sustainable development goals – will require a threefold increase in current progress, the WHO said. Furthermore, around a quarter of the world’s population still does not have access to clean fuels for cooking.

Still, the WHO said that, with the right policies, meeting the target is possible. It called for an acceleration of renewable energy deployment – a call echoed by the UN.

“We have seen encouraging progress in expanding access to affordable, reliable and clean energy, however, this year’s report shows that millions of people still lack access,” said the UN’s Li Junhua.

“The current global energy crisis presents an opportunity to accelerate the transition to clean energy in support of energy security. Seizing this opportunity will require substantial scaling-up of international support and investment.”

‘Four Brits trapped in their car’ are among 12 people killed in Spanish wildfire

Published

on

An emergency worker looks on during a wildfire in Almeria, Spain

Four Britons have been found dead in their car after getting trapped in a Spanish wildfire that claimed 12 lives, according to local officials.

Antonio Sanz, Andalucia’s Regional Minister for Health, the Presidency and Emergencies, confirmed the deaths early this morning.

He said: ‘Unfortunately, the decision of some people to take evacuation routes that weren’t those indicated by the emergency services and take an alternative route became a mortal trap.

‘There were two scenarios like that specifically. One was a vehicle in which four people died, with everything pointing to them being of British origin. Their steering wheel was on the other side from the side it’s normally on in Spain.

‘Then another seven people died in another scenario. They were walking and had abandoned their cars and were probably looking for a way out. But they had taken a route which wasn’t the one indicated by the emergency services and the consequences have been terrible.’

150 firefighters are working to put out the blaze in Bedar, Almeria, the Emergency Agency of Andalucía said early on Friday.

The fire injured at least six people, including a woman who suffered burns and another person with smoke inhalation, who were taken to hospital.

One Brit living in Scotland posted on X overnight: ‘My dad is in hospital. His house in Bedar has been evacuated and his cat is trapped inside.’

He went on to post the address in the hope that rescue teams and Civil Protection workers would see his message and respond.

Sanz called the deaths ‘an unprecedented tragedy’, adding in the statement that ‘the pain is immense’.

Witnesses told authorities the blaze may have started after a power line fell, igniting dry vegetation before spreading rapidly through surrounding woodland. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire.

Roads were closed and residents evacuated as the inferno spread, with about 50 people housed in a cultural centre.

The origin of the accident, which prompted more than 150 emergency calls, is located on a road in the area.

Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME), which is deployed in major emergencies, was due to join firefighting efforts in the coming hours.

‘The fire situation is complex. It’s a fire in a very large ravine that machinery hasn’t been able to reach, with no access points. The topography is extremely difficult,’ explained Sanz

‘The updated fire perimeter is estimated at about 3,150 hectares burned. During our response to this fire, we have had a large number of personnel on the ground – 464 firefighters with 124 vehicles.

‘[There are] 21 firefighting stations, comprising of 150 firefighters, 9 trucks, 18 operations technicians, and environmental agents,’ he said.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wrote on X that he was ‘deeply saddened and devastated by the terrible consequences of the wildfire’.

He said in May that Spain would deploy its largest-ever summer wildfire response this year.

The head of the regional government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, called the blaze ‘a tragedy’. ‘Our hearts are heavy and we are devastated by grief,’ he wrote on X.

The wildfire comes as Spain swelters in a heatwave, with scorching temperatures triggering orange weather warnings – the second highest level – across parts of Andalusia in recent days.

Spain has experienced increasingly frequent and prolonged heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40C, creating conditions for major wildfires.

The country registered its third-warmest year on record in 2025, with 25 single-day heat records set during the period, national weather agency AEMET said.

Earlier this month, hundreds of firefighters battled a wildfire that raged near the popular Mediterranean tourist destination of Costa Brava and forced thousands to stay indoors.

Strong winds whipped up the fire and prompted regional authorities to urge residents of 10 municipalities to remain at home, including at the popular Platja d’Aro beach resort.

Deadly wildfires devoured almost 400,000 hectares of land last year, the highest figure recorded for the country by the European Forest Fire Information System.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
