Ed Sheeran has addressed Macklemore being removed from his tour after his ‘Free Palestine‘ speech upset the owners of venues they were set to play.

The singer, 35, released a statement on Tuesday, addressing the American star’s position and reminding fans he will never personally take a publicly political stance.

Ed, who is a father of two, said that his audience is often young people ‘from different backgrounds’, who do not expect his shows to be a political forum.

The Shape Of You hitmaker assured fans that Macklemore’s removal would not affect his tour, as he told them ‘I would never let down the fans who had made plans’.

In Ed’s reaction, which came two days after Macklemore’s own statement, he said: ‘I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine. 

‘The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy. There are too many wars across the world causing immeasurable pain, none of which should be tolerated.

‘Macklemore asked to join my tour last year and I agreed, because I respect him as an artist. As with all my support acts, I agree that they play a setlist of their choosing.

‘After Macklemore’s performances at my New Jersey shows, venues on my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting.’

Ed continued by explaining that he had tried to find a resolution so that Macklemore could remain on his tour, but he was not able to.

He said: ‘I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said. I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge.

‘One of those people was Robert Kraft. I was also involved in direct talks with promoters along with activists on both sides to try and find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.

‘Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me.’

Ed then explained that there would be no alterations to the tour he has planned because he would never let his fans down.

He said: ‘I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.

‘I have always used my platform and music to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together and this won’t ever change. Those who have been to one of my shows will know that they are about unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome.

‘I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care. Nor does it mean I don’t support causes in my own, personal way.

‘There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum. 

‘I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes. However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace. I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed. If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change.

‘There are different approaches to being an advocate for change. I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unfortunately, was unable to do so. I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too.’

The drama started when Macklemore used his opening set to chant ‘Free Palestine’ and deliver a politically motivated speech.

Macklemore stated that every human being deserves the same freedom, and told the crowd he wanted people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to know they had not been forgotten.

He then performed his protest song Hind’s Hall while images of the devastation in Gaza were projected on the big screens at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Macklemore also faced a boycott petition calling for his removal from Sheeran’s tour for the blunt and direct language he used onstage.

He was the opening act for Sheeran’s LOOP tour on two consecutive nights, September 4 and September 5, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

Macklemore has also previously voiced support for Palestinians and called out Israel’s conduct in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and has continued doing so for years.

As seen in fan-taken footage, he wore a keffiyeh at one point during his set.

During his performance, he said he had a message to share with the Palestinian people and wanted them to know ‘they have not been forgotten’.

He said: ‘One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour was because I wanted to stand up here on stages in stadiums across America and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine. I said, Free Palestine!

‘I want those words to be loud and clear so that people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten them.’

Macklemore also added: ‘I believe that every human being walking on this earth deserves exactly the same freedom, to know safety and peace before knowing the sounds of violence.’

During his speech, he referred to ICE as a ‘terrorist organization’ before shouting: ‘Free Palestine’ and ‘Free Cuba, Congo, Sudan and Iran’.

The Israeli-American Council drew up a petition insisting he should be dropped from the remaining dates of Sheeran’s tour.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Macklemore’s representatives for comment.

It wasn’t known how many signatures the petition collected.

The group’s petition read: ‘This was an Ed Sheeran concert – not a political rally, not a protest, and not an activist event. The issue is not whether Macklemore has the right to hold political views.

‘The question is where the line should be drawn when an opening act uses a global concert platform to advance a one-sided political agenda.’

Fan reaction was split on social media after the two shows, with some defending his onstage war comments as others accused him of anti-Semitic rhetoric.

Meanwhile, Pink weighed in on Macklemore’s recent controversy, amid calls from fans for the rapper to be removed from the tour.

The singer, 47, reposted an Instagram Story from StopAntisemitism, which slammed Macklemore’s performance.

The caption on the post read: ‘Awful – Jewish fans bought tickets to see Ed Sheeran sing last night in NJ, not to be ambushed by Macklemore’s anti-Israel propaganda.

‘Instead, Macklemore walked onstage in a keffiyeh, shouted “Free Palestine,” accused Israel of a false “genocide,” and turned a mainstream event into a political nightmare against the Jewish state. Concert-goers are owed apologies and refunds.’

In response, Macklemore appeared to double down on his comments last week, as he posted a clip of his speech from MetLife Stadium with the caption: ‘Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial’.

Pink did not add any additional commentary aside from re-sharing the post.

The Daily Mail has also reached out to representatives for Pink and Sheeran for comment but has yet to hear back.

In his apology after the Jewish caricature controversy, he said: ‘There is no worse feeling than being misunderstood, especially when people are hurt or offended… I respect all cultures and all people.

‘I would never intentionally put down anybody for the fabric that makes them who they are. 

‘I love human beings, love originality, and… happen to love a weird outfit from time to time.’

Macklemore added that he never thought he looked Jewish.

‘Some people there thought I looked like Ringo, some Abe Lincoln. If anything, I thought I looked like Humpty Hump with a bowl cut,’ he added.

Draper will not qualify for a protected ranking if he does return in January, as only those who are out for over six months are able to retain the ranking they had when they left the tour.

He is currently ranked 155, which means he would require wildcards or have to come through qualifying to play in Grand Slams and ATP Tour events.

But none of that will worry him if he is able to play freely and without so much pain.

Draper peaked at four in the world last June after winning a first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells and finishing runner-up at another in Madrid.

“Last summer, all the dedication and work I had put into this sport was coming together,” Draper added.

“It was all going my way and the path seemed so clear. However a complicated injury made things incredibly challenging, and since that moment I’ve been desperately trying to get back and feel as I once did on the court.

“Managing so much change, adversity and pain has helped me to grow massively in many areas of my life but has also made me feel a level of fatigue.”

Draper has taken a holiday with friends in recent weeks and has been trying to aid his recovery by taking a mental break from the sport.

He is expected to make a gradual return to training over the next few weeks, as his team try to work out the principal causes of the injury.

The families of Letby’s victims have been waiting years for answers. They have said that the government must fully implement the recommendations of the inquiry into the killer nurse.

Specialist medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, representing seven children harmed by Lucy Letby, said the publication of the inquiry’s findings will be an important and difficult moment for everyone affected.

“While no system can guarantee the prevention of criminal acts by a determined individual, patients, families and clinicians are entitled to expect that their concerns will be listened to and that those concerns will be investigated properly and acted upon.”

She added: “The key questions are whether the systems, culture and governance within our NHS were sufficiently robust to identify risks and respond to them appropriately and where, in this instance, those systems have failed.

“With the families, we will consider Lady Justice Thirlwall’s findings carefully, but whatever the detail of the report, it is vital that lessons are learned and any recommendations are implemented by the UK Government so that confidence in patient safety is strengthened.

“Families need to have confidence that everything possible is being done to prevent similar failings happening again, whether in Chester or elsewhere in the NHS.”

It’s been more than six years since teenager Noah Donohoe was found dead 600m into a freezing underground water tunnel in Belfast.

His death – and the speculation over what happened to him in the week between his daylight disappearance and the discovery of his body – became a huge news story that provoked countless unanswered questions.

Now, after an inquest and months of exhaustive hearings and long deliberations by a jury, there is a verdict – but much is still unknown about what happened to Noah.

Why, the night before he disappeared, did he leave his home in the middle of the rain-soaked night? Where did he go? Why did he come back 34 minutes later, as documented by CCTV, barefoot?

Hours later, on Sunday 21 June 2020, he left the south Belfast home he shared with his mother for the final time.

Why did he leave and go to an unfamiliar part of north Belfast? Why was the teenager naked when he was last seen in the area of the water tunnel entrance?

And what might have been if he had seen the social media message sent him by one of two friends he planned to meet in north Belfast telling him their plans were cancelled?

An autopsy found Noah had died from drowning, with the tunnel he was found in heading towards Belfast Lough and its tides.

Now, after years of delays, a jury has found that it was possible, but not probable, that failings by the Department of Infrastructure over the tunnel in which he was found contribute to his death.

They also found 13 failings by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) but that these did not in any way contribute to the 14-year-old’s death.

Having spent months in court following all the evidence, it was clearly not an easy process for the men and women of the jury.

They heard from dozens of witnesses and received voluminous amounts of official and expert documentation.

This week they deliberated on Monday and Tuesday. But it came more than two months after the inquest was dramatically adjourned in the early hours after three days of deliberations did not lead to a verdict.

Two people have died and four have been seriously injured after a car crashed into a group of people in Doncaster.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to White Rose Way when a black Mitsubishi L200 hit a group of pedestrians at 11:00 BST on Sunday, before hitting a black Audi and silver BMW on the opposite carriageway.

The force said two of the pedestrians had died at the scene while four other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 30-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit and later released on bail.

An ‘aggressive’ London Underground passenger killed an Elizabeth Line worker with a single punch to the face after missing his train, a court heard.  

Ayodele Jamgbadi, 29, of Kingston Road, Ilford, is accused of murdering ‘adored’ father Jorge Ortega, 61, with ‘significant force’.

On December 4, 2024, the defendant allegedly kicked an advertisement frame when he missed his train from Ilford station to Stratford at around 8.45pm.

Inner London Crown Court heard Mr Ortega and two other Transport for London (TfL) colleagues then intervened and tried to calm the irate passenger down. 

However, Jamgbadi floored the 61-year-old with one punch, knocking him unconscious after he hit his head on the concrete platform.

Mr Ortega was taken to hospital but died of a severe traumatic brain injury two days later, the court heard. 

Jamgbadi was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm but that was upgraded to murder following Mr Ortega’s death.

Judge Benedict Kelleher told the jury that Jamgbadi is not fit to enter a plea, and they therefore have to determine whether he did the act.

The key questions they have to consider is whether Jamgbadi threw the punch and whether it was a significant cause of Mr Ortega’s death. 

He said: ‘He is unfit to plead which means that he is not mentally well enough to stand trial and he is in hospital for that reason.

Patrick Dennis, prosecuting, told the court that Mr Ortega was on duty at the time of the incident. 

He said three TfL staff members, including Mr Ortega, had approached a man on the platform after being alerted by banging noises. 

He said: ‘The defendant arrived at the railway station. CCTV shows that he missed the train heading into London to Stratford.

‘After he missed the train, the defendant effectively kicked an advert frame.

‘As a result Mr Ortega and two other staff members came out of the office and they effectively tried to calm Mr Jamgbadi down.

‘As Mr Ortega retreated backward, the defendant punched him once in the face and that caused Mr Ortega to fall onto the platform and strike his head and that rendered him unconscious.

Patrick Dennis, prosecuting, told the court that Mr Ortega was on duty at the time of the incident 

He said three TfL staff members, including Mr Ortega, had approached a man on the platform after being alerted by banging noises 

‘The defendant displayed aggressive behaviour.’

Mr Dennis described what the CCTV images showed: ‘They don’t get particularly close – the defendant then started to walk away from them but he then turned around and started to walk toward Jorge Ortega, who started to back away.

‘It is at that stage he punched Jorge Ortega with significant force.’

Mr Dennis said an ambulance arrived and Mr Ortega was taken to hospital but ’48 hours after the incident he tragically died’.

Following his arrest, Jamgbadi told British Transport Police officers: ‘I punched him in the face, I literally punched him in the face. 

‘What are you going to do about it, are you going to nick me?’

Mr Ortega, a customer experience assistant, was with colleagues in an office on the platform when they heard ‘banging noises’ from outside, the court heard.

They went outside and saw Jamgbadi kicking an advertising frame and asked him if he was OK.

Mr Ortega’s co-worker, Mohammed Alim, said the man ‘seemed a bit disturbed, a bit angry and just said “Who’s got a problem?”‘.

Mr Alim told the court: ‘Within a split second he swung a punch on Jorge’s left-hand side. The attacker used his right hand.

‘It struck Jorge near the temple area. The impact of the punch was with so much force that I saw something fly out of his mouth.

‘He was floored. He hit the back of his head.’

Mr Alim said he feared the man was going to attack Mr Ortega again when he was on the floor, telling the court ‘he went to Jorge’.

Mr Alim said ‘he looked at Jorge and he looked like he was going to attack him but I said ‘what are you doing?’

The attacker then turned to Mr Alim, who said he thought he ‘stopped him’ from doing anything else.

Mr Alim said: ‘I raised my hands up in a defensive motion and said “take it easy”.

‘Something came to [the attacker’s] head and he just turned back and walked off.’

Mr Ortega’s co-workers and members of the public carried him in to an office where he was ‘going in and out of consciousness’, Mr Alim recalled.

The attacker then moved away after Mr Alim said something to him and towards a third member of staff, before he left the scene, the court heard.

The man then pushed through the barriers without paying in order to leave the station.

The jury were told that pathologist Dr Michael Parsons concluded: ‘The overall pattern of head injury is entirely consistent with a substantial impact to the back of the head caused by a heavy fall from a standing height.

‘There was bruising and a laceration to the right eyebrow and adjacent cheek which are entirely consistent with a punch to the face.’

Mr Ortega was a member of the RMT union and worked as a customer experience assistant for MTREL, which runs the Elizabeth Line.

Mick Lynch, who was RMT’s general secretary at the time, expressed his condolences to Mr Ortega’s family after the attack.

Then-prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said the incident was ‘absolutely tragic’.

In a tribute, Mr Ortega’s son said: ‘Our dad was the most loving person, the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting. 

‘Everyone who has met our dad or who has ever worked with him over the years will tell you this. 

‘He had a brilliant mind, enjoyed cooking, loved drawing, and was highly skilled in art. 

‘He was an amazing family man and would always put other people first. He loved his grandchildren, and in turn, they adored our dad.’

A waterway has been polluted with thousands of gallons of fuel after it leaked from a data centre in New Jersey.

Roughly 5,000 gallons of fuel leaked from a storage tank at Equinix’s NY2 data center in Secaucus and flowed into Anderson Creek – a narrow tributary running through the New Jersey Meadowlands wetland in the northeast of the US state – on Friday evening.

Secaucus mayor Michael Gonnelli said the spill had been caused by a ‘computer glitch’.

However, Equinix – the ‘largest global data center and colocation provider for enterprise network and cloud computing’, according to its website – said an investigation into the cause of the leak was still underway.

Containment barriers and vacuum trucks were sent out to suck a mixture of diesel and water out of the creek in a bid to stop the pollution from spreading.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said the fuel did not reach the Hackensack River, a 45-mile-long river stretching through New Jersey and neighbouring New York, ultimately flowing into Newark Bay.

But environmental campaigners and experts have branded the leak a ‘slap in the face’ and wondered whether it could have been contained entirely.

Hackensack Riverkeeper Bill Sheehan told the nonprofit news outlet Gothamist: ‘The tributaries are the capillary system of the whole ecosystem.

‘All the water that runs off of our land goes into the creeks first, and then runs through the creeks out into the river.’

Equinix said a fuel release was detected from a tank outside its facility on Friday, but that staff stopped the leak environmental contractor Clean Harbors and the fire brigade were called in and the DEP and Hudson Regional Health Commission were notified.

Mayor Gonnelli said the data centre had been operating from the site since 2001. ‘We’ve never had a problem before this time,’ he said.

‘There’s a lot of complaints about data centers, I can tell you that. But right now, they did everything they had to do.’

The DEP diesel fuel which had leaked from the facility had been contained.

Equinix said a full investigation had been launched to establish the cause of the incident and to prevent future accidents.

The company said: ‘We are working closely with those agencies, local officials, and community stakeholders to ensure a thorough remediation,’ adding that it remained ‘committed to resolving this quickly, transparently, and responsibly.’

Deputy council leader Councillor Peter Wilkinson told a meeting of the authority’s executive today (Tuesday, September 15) that the properties were instead being provided to meet the council’s statutory responsibilities towards homeless households.

Councillors were considering a revised business case which would increase the council’s temporary accommodation programme from 90 to 112 homes.

The scheme was originally approved in 2024 amid increasing demand for temporary accommodation and rising costs from placing homeless households in hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Addressing claims about the scheme at the meeting at the Civic Centre in Selby, Cllr Wilkinson said: “I’m aware that there has been some discussion on social media regarding the purpose of these homes.

“For clarity, this programme is not for asylum accommodation. Accommodation of asylum seekers is arranged separately by the Home Office.

“These homes are intended for households to whom North Yorkshire Council owes homelessness duties, including families with children, people fleeing domestic abuse and other vulnerable residents who would otherwise have nowhere suitable to stay.”

Dozens of comments have been posted online in recent days suggesting the homes would be used to house migrants.

One person said: “British people born in this country need houses. Forget the migrants. Send them back. They are not our problem.”

Another added: “This will be to house migrants as they want them out of all hotels etc.”

But the council’s report confirms the purpose of the programme is to provide temporary accommodation for homeless households across North Yorkshire.

It says demand has increased, partly because households are spending longer in temporary accommodation.

Twenty properties have already been delivered — 11 in Scarborough, six in Norton, two in Catterick and one in Ripon — with another 40 properties acquired or already owned by the council being prepared for occupation.

The revised programme would increase the overall budget from £11.6m to just around £18.1m, with the council saying the additional investment would reduce its reliance on more expensive emergency accommodation.

The report says there is a particular shortage of one and two-bedroom temporary accommodation for homeless single people and couples, as well as shortages in parts of Harrogate, Selby and Scarborough.

Once all 112 homes are available, the council estimates the programme could eventually produce savings and avoid additional costs of up to £2.71m a year, with the additional benefit expected from 2028/29 onwards.

Cllr Wilkinson said the properties would remain council-owned assets.

He added: “Overall, this is a prudent investment that reduces ongoing revenue pressure, supports some of our most vulnerable residents and represents good stewardship of public money.”

The council has a legal duty to help people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.

Its report also points out that families with children and pregnant women cannot legally be housed in B&B accommodation for more than six weeks.
