Hull City could face points deduction in Premier League

Under PSR, deductions are now set based upon on the level of the overspend, locked to a grid.

Go over the £39m limit and it is a points deduction.

It starts at three points for under £2m, then four for between £2m and £4m, five for £4m to £6m, and six points for £6m to £8m.

A club can claim back one or two points in mitigation if their accounts show a positive trend, but this would not be the case for the Tigers.

Hull would argue that this is not a result of regular operational overspending. It is a by-product of their success as only the promotion bonuses have caused it.

This is unlikely to hold sway, as Forest discovered in 2024 when they were docked four points, as it is a sign of sporting benefit from payments made to players.

Leicester City provide the precedent for Hull to receive the deduction in the top flight.

In 2024, Leicester managed to avoid a penalty by arguing the Premier League did not have jurisdiction.

This led to a change in the rules, with the two competitions inserting reciprocal clauses in their regulations.

Such collaboration between the leagues was seen in February.

The Premier League took action against Leicester for an overspend through to the 2024-25 season. The EFL agreed to apply the six-point penalty in the Championship, which ultimately caused their relegation.

PSR is being replaced on 1 July by a new system called squad cost ratio SCR). Rather than assessing losses over a three year-period, it allows clubs to spend 85% of the income they generate on their squads and is assessed annually.

Burnham Vows To Continue Backing Ukraine With Message For Putin

Andy Burnham has promised to continue supporting Ukraine in its war against Russia as he looks to welcome Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the UK.

The Ukrainian president is the prime minister’s first international visitor since he officially took office last Monday.

In a statement, Burnham said: “Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering.”

He added: “Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve, and we will not back down until we achieve long-lasting and just peace for Ukraine.”

Burnham and Zelenskyy will be going to a UK naval base and meeting with 200 Ukrainian soldiers and sailors.

The troops have been working on Exercise Sea Breeze, a naval security and counter-mine operation over the last three weeks to prepare for future Black Sea missions.

Burnham will also use the trip to announce he is sharing the intellectual property of British electronic jammers which can be used to interfere with Russian air defence systems.

The devices – known as Stone Cloak – can be attached to drones to stop them from being targeted.

Ukraine has already been using the jammers, but by sharing the intellectual property, the country will be able to mass-produce produce their own.

It’s part of the innovative moves between the UK and Ukraine under their 100-year partnership.

Burnham added: “Stone Cloak is the best of homegrown British innovation and proven on the frontline, and it will be vital to protecting our security in both our countries.”

The prime minister also told the BBC in his first major interview: “My support for Ukraine is unwavering – it is 100%.

“And I will do what, in Ukraine, people think is the right thing that they need.”

Downing Street said Zelenskyy’s visit “illustrates the strength of the relationship between the two nations”.

It comes after the Ukrainian president expressed his concerns over the UK’s changing leadership when Keir Starmer visited Kyiv on his last full day as Labour leader.

Zelenskyy said: “Of course I’m afraid of changes, of course we are afraid because we are in the war each day.

“But again the priority is the relation between nations, not just between just people. I’m sure that these relations will not change, or we have to do our best not to lose such very good relations.”

“I hope we will never lose strong relations with the UK during or after the war.”

Starmer replied: “You won’t.”

Fast fashion is inexpensive, so when clothes become worn or damaged, replacing them often seems easier than repairing them.

Clothes are often worn just seven to ten times before they are thrown away. And 92 million tonnes of textile waste is burnt or ends up in landfill every year.

Repairing clothes can be one of the most significant ways to reduce their environmental impact. Extending a garment’s life by just nine more months can reduce its carbon, water and waste footprints by up to 20%.

But people can be put off repairing their clothes due to cost, lack of sewing skills, equipment and time.

Historically, repair has been associated with wartime necessity and domestic drudgery – such as darning socks. Wearing repaired clothing has historically been viewed as a sign of financial hardship, so people tried to make their repairs as invisible as possible to avoid stigma.

Increased uptake in repair is still often linked to economic pressures, but public attitudes to repair are changing.

Today, we are not just embracing hidden repairs – some people are actively showing them off through visible mending.

Visible mending involves repairing worn patches, tears and holes in clothes using techniques and materials that are deliberately noticeable – such as colourful stitching, embroidery and decorative patches – so that the repair is highlighted rather than hidden.

Visible repair has been linked to the centuries-old Japanese repair technique kintsugi – where broken pottery is fixed using a lacquered resin and decorated with gold. This emphasises damage as an important part of an object’s history. It has inspired the non-commercial fashion brand, Golden Joinery, to invite people to visibly mend holes and rips in their clothing with golden thread.

Visible mending has also been inspired by sashiko, a 400-year-old Japanese folk embroidery. Its repeated running stitches were traditionally used to strengthen work clothing but are now used to add decorative geometric patterns to clothing and home textiles repairs. This adds beauty to something damaged.

Although visible mending was once seen as a quiet, grassroots resistance movement to fast fashion, its popularity is growing rapidly.

Alongside a host of books published on the topic, the movement has grown quickly on social media with users tagging and showing off their repairs. The hashtag #VisibleMending has more than 56 million views on TikTok.

Plus, clothing haul videos, in which people show off their latest fast-fashion purchases, are being contested by mended haul videos where clothing repairs are shown off instead.

Embracing visible repair

Some retailers are also promoting visible repair.

Second Cashmere, a sustainable cashmere brand in Glasgow, sells recycled cashmere and restored knitwear to give clothes headed to landfill a second life. They help customers extend the lives of their cashmere by selling mending kits and provide a repair service where customers can have their items repaired invisibly or visibly.

The outdoor clothing brand Patagonia also offers a product repair service.

Patagonia inspires their customers to adopt a DIY approach to their own repairs at home – offering repair kits, replacement trims, spare parts plus repair guides and video tutorials. Their worn wear programme encourages customers to embrace the marks of repair as an important part of a garment’s story. Customers are invited to show off their patched up and repaired items with pride.

Researchers have argued that brand repair initiatives such as these are beneficial because they can turn passive consumers into active participants in the life of their products. Plus they can reduce replacement rates and increase consumer confidence in the brand’s support for sustainability.

Decorative stitching is often seen as a symbolic demonstration of sustainability values and resistance to disposable fast fashion. It’s also an expression of personal character and creativity. Visible repair demonstrates how repair is shifting from a cultural stigma that must be hidden to something that’s celebrated.

Hiding amongst the crowd in a face-concealing grey suit, the La La Land actor joked he was a man named Ricky who was “cosplaying hard” and suggested to his fellow Marvel stars that he’d like a role in the upcoming Marvel flick.

Rumours have long swirled about a possible Deadpool appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, though Reynolds’s crash appearance didn’t confirm whether or not he’d actually star in the film.

But amidst all the furore, fans – some of whom took pictures with Reynolds before realising he was underneath the anti-hero’s off-hue suit – might have missed a joke the actor himself referenced on his Instagram page.

Deadpool’s usual costume is red and black. But at Comic-Con, Reynolds unveiled a new grey look for the character.

This, it turns out, is denim. And along with the flag it bears on the front, it references Reynolds’ identity.

The actor, who is Canadian, shared a Story of himself in the suit with the hashtag #JeanPool.

And speaking to Robert Downey Jr. on the panel, he said: “I’m not wearing the Doom mask over this mask because I didn’t want to ruin the lines of my Canadian tuxedo”.

A Canadian tuxedo refers to double-denim outfits (think that iconic Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake look).

Funeral details for former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe are still being finalised, as Buckfast Abbey confirmed it is working closely with her family on arrangements

Funeral arrangements for former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe are still being finalised following her passing in July. Her death has become a matter of national significance, given her prominent political legacy and the harrowing circumstances surrounding it.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told last week that Widdecombe died after being struck 21 times on the head with a hammer. A provisional cause of death was recorded as a “blunt force injury to the head”, the court was informed.

Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham, was detained on suspicion of murder on July 11. He was subsequently re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, though no charge relating to this offence has been brought against him.

A provisional trial date has been set for June 8, 2027, reports Chronicle Live.

Widdecombe’s family has pressed ahead with funeral preparations, working closely with Buckfast Abbey, where she was a devoted regular worshipper. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast have issued a statement confirming they “continue to hold Ann Widdecombe, her family and loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time”

Following her death, Buckfast Abbey, nestled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, released a statement in which Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community expressed they were “deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe in such tragic and disturbing circumstances”. Ann was a regular fixture at the Abbey Church, faithfully attending Sunday Solemn Mass alongside Holy Week and Easter celebrations.

The statement went on: “Many in our worshipping community knew her as a kind and warm character. She will be missed and fondly remembered.

“Ann was a woman of profound faith, a faith which found expression in the public forum of politics. Ann was unafraid to express her unwavering convictions, formed through her Roman Catholic faith.

“She had a sharp intellect and was a dedicated public servant. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community extend their heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.”

In a communiqué released on Sunday, 26th July, Fr Abbot confirmed the church was liaising “closely with the family regarding funeral arrangements” and would share further details “in due course, when appropriate”.

Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community expressed that they were “grateful for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received.”

Buckfast Abbey houses a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks who follow the ancient Rule of St Benedict. The location holds considerable historical significance, with the original abbey established in 1018 AD by King Cnut.

The former member of comedy trio, The Goodies, went on to present the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumnwatch, among other nature and bird-based programmes, where he became a beloved fixture.

In a statement, David Foster, Bill’s agent, said: “It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Bill Oddie, the country’s best-loved birder.

“Bill was a multitalented celebrity – wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, songwriter, musician and conservationist. Yet it was never fame that he valued.”

Foster continued: “Instead he encouraged us to respect and protect the environment. He taught us the wonder of it. He protested, lobbied and campaigned for it. “As Bill’s agent I witnessed close-hand his intelligence and wit. He was my friend and it was an honour and a privilege to represent him for so many years. I will miss him terribly.

“My thoughts and love are with Bill’s wife, Laura, and his daughters Bonnie, Kate and Rosie, who have asked not to be contacted at this sad time. Please respect their wishes.”

Throughout Russell T Davies’ Tip Toe, viewers are shown a clip of character Leo (played by Alan Cumming)’s body hanging from a lamppost. This is the end of the show: the series depicts the events that lead up to the horrific lynching.

The brutal scene was “difficult” to film, the show’s creator told HuffPost UK previously.

And in a new interview with The Independent, Russell explained how the moment was shot without alarming the public.

“It took about three days to film as we had to be very careful with it,” he told the publication.

“There was a school nearby that broke up at 3:30pm, so we had to stop at that point every single day. We were next to quite a major A road, so we had to erect huge screens to block off the set, otherwise, cars driving along would have seen a man hanging, and we could have caused an accident.”

He continued, “It was all very complicated and meticulously planned – we had to build that lamppost.

“We had Alan Cumming, a stuntman, and a dummy. When the crew first hoisted the dummy up into the air, absolute silence fell over the entire street. Everyone stopped what they were doing and just stood there, as the enormity of it hit us.”

Despite the “terrible” nature of the scene, Russell added, it was “lovely” to shoot because of the “care and dedication” the team had for one another.

And a timing trick helped to make the shoot less daunting, too.

“Our producer Phil Collinson did one of the cleverest things I’ve ever seen, which is that he arranged for the hanging to be done just before the shoot’s one-week break, so that everyone could let go of it and shake it off. It gave people time to recover from something that was genuinely traumatic,” said the It’s A Sin writer.

“For Alan, filming it, he had to be at the centre of a lot of hostility. Even though it’s acting, you still have to be held back and have a rope put around your neck, and so he was absolutely delighted it was over.

“That’s one of the reasons why we didn’t do the shoot chronologically; we didn’t want to shoot that last, because it would have been a horrible way for him to have left it and not a nice way to remember it.”

Lastly, he explained, Channel 4 worked with the team to ensure viewers had enough warning about the troubling scene.

I’m not an anxious flyer, but even I have to admit that the idea of a plane being struck by lightning mid-air terrifies me.

Perhaps it shouldn’t – after all, the National Weather Service of America said most commercial planes “are hit by lightning an average of one or two times a year.”

But why does it happen, and is it even dangerous for the passengers and crew inside?

There’s a LOT more lightning than I realised

Most lightning strikes to planes occur at altitudes between 5,000 and 15,000 feet, Simple Flying shared. That’s because takeoff and landing is when the vehicles pass through clouds, which are electrically charged.

Edward Rupke, senior engineer at Lightning Technologies, Inc. told Scientific American that planes actually trigger lightning strikes as they pass through non-striking, but electrically-charged, clouds.

“Actually, aircraft often initiate the strike because their presence enhances the ambient electric fields typical for thunderstorms and facilitates electrical breakdown through air,” the US National Weather Service explained.

The strike attaches itself to an extremity like the nose or tip of the plane first. Then, the electricity moves along the outer “skin” of the plane as it flies through the strike, eventually leaving the body of the plane when it leaves the polarity.

Is it dangerous?

It used to be. 1967 was the last noted commercial plane crash due to a lightning strike – the contact caused the fuel tank to explode.

Nowadays, however, planes are made from seamless aluminium or even more advanced composite materials that conduct electricity well enough to keep them away from the sensitive parts of the plane.

Occasionally, pilots might notice flickering lights or very brief interference.

“When it is suspected that a plane was hit by lightning, there is a mandatory inspection for damage, which can delay flights and be quite expensive,” the US National Weather Service revealed.

So, for that reason, pilots try to steer clear of thunderstorms.

The presenter, 41, and her partner Cameron McAllister – who first became parents in August 2024 – welcomed the newest addition to their family last week.

Gemma beamed as she cuddled her newborn – whose identity has not been publicly revealed – and a funny picture of Cameron dressed in scrubs in the hospital.

She wrote: ‘Had another baby this week with the most beautiful goober of a man that I ever was to meet after travelling the world to find him. LOVE YOU @cameronmac815 and this miracle family.

The new Canada-US bridge over the Detroit River is set to open

DETROIT (AP) — Traffic is set to start flowing Monday across a new bridge over the Detroit River that will serve as a critical route for trade, jobs and tourism between Canada and the U.S.

Last week, Canada celebrated the Gordie Howe International Bridge with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Windsor, Ontario, to mark the completion of the multibillion-dollar, multiyear project.

U.S. and Michigan representatives were uninvited from Friday’s gathering after President Donald Trump suddenly announced 50% tariffs on Canadian goods entering America.

The bridge is named for Howe, a Canadian icon known as “Mr. Hockey” who wore No. 9 while playing on the other side of the Detroit River for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. He died in 2016.

More than 70% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S., making America its largest trade partner, and Detroit is the No. 1 port for truck traffic on the U.S.-Canada border, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

For nearly a century, the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge has been the only route for large commercial trucks moving between the U.S. and Canada at Detroit. Businesses say the new six-lane span will be faster and less expensive.

The span is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long and rises 151 feet (46 meters) above the river at its highest point. Pedestrians and bicyclists carrying proper identification will be able to cross it for free in a few weeks.

Construction on the new bridge began in 2018 but took years, partly because of a global slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canada paid to build the bridge at an estimated cost of $6.4 billion. A recent agreement says Canada will share some toll revenue with the U.S. government for 15 years.

Trump praised his administration for that deal in a social media post while the Ontario event was in progress. “We changed the terms,” he said.

Michigan will also get a share, but not until Canada’s costs are recovered, likely decades from now.

In new pictures, he was seen showing off his collection of tattoos while having a swim – opting for a pair of striped blue trunks and chunky black sunglasses.

“A friend of ours said, ‘Be careful, when you go there, they come in really quickly’,” he recalled. “So I go in and I’m getting changed. The middle door slides open. My wife’s in this one, I’m in this one. She quickly whips the dress off, pops the paper knickers on, jumps on the bed.

“I take my clothes off, I struggle to kind of get all the buttons done on my shirt.”

Attempting to speed things up, he pulled his shirt over his head instead of unbuttoning it, and then removed his pants.

“They land on the ground. I’m standing like this to put my leg in, my leg’s up. As I’m doing that, the door opens and [the masseuse] comes in. She can see everything and we just stare at each other for a bit too long. I went ‘not yet!’”
