‘I’m a new homeowner and this on-sale Habitat patio set instantly brightened up my garden’

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Shoppers say the garden furniture set is ‘sturdy’ and ‘looks so much more expensive in real life’ – so I bought it myself and couldn’t agree more

When it comes to picking out patio furniture , it’s important to settle on something that ticks all the boxes. It needs to be within budget, comfortable and durable, but without compromising on personality and style.

As a first time homeowner in 2026, I was on the hunt for an affordable, colourful garden set to seat four, and with the Bank Holiday weekend looming, I wanted it fast. After searching high and low and realising that, much of the time, you get what you pay for when it comes to these things, we found a stunning set at Habitat that not only met all of our requirements, but was also on sale and could be delivered at short notice.

Habitat’s Cali 4 Seater Metal Patio Set was originally priced at £150, but was reduced to £120 in the sale. I actually ordered mine through TopCashback so I also earned £1.20 in cashback, and gained 120 Nectar points on my order, too.

Part of Habitat’s Cali collection , this four-seater set is made up of two chairs, a bench and a low rectangular table, all made from steel with textilene seating. While the online description states that the set is orange, the box says its terracotta, which I personally prefer as it brings those gorgeous Mediterranean vibes to the garden, but others who bought the set were disappointed it wasn’t the vibrant orange they’d hoped.

The assembly is relatively beginner-friendly, but like many flat-pack garden sets, this isn’t a quick 20-minute job. My partner and I – a 28-year-old journalist and 30-year-old mechanic – haven’t put all that much flatpack together yet, but we managed to build the whole set within an hour and a half at a pretty leisurely pace.

This bright orange 4-seater patio set oozes contemporary charm. Made from steel with fabric seats for a comfy fit with a low matching table perfect for drinks and nibbles.

The screws, nuts and washers all came in a very handy pack so as to not lose anything, and it contains everything you need for the build. If you have additional tools already like a wrench or allen bit, it may be faster than the supplied allen key, but it’s by no means essential. The instructions were easy to follow, but if you prefer, there’s also a YouTube tutorial available, which I found helpful to watch prior to unboxing.

The most difficult part of the build is adding tension rods to the chair and bench for support, and attaching the mesh seating to the main frame, as it requires one person to hold the seat taut, and one to put the nuts and bolts on.

Once built, the set is very comfortable to sit on, with a slight recline for that relaxed, lounging feel. The table is a handy size for drinks and snacks, and the whole set is surprisingly lightweight at 24kg, making it easy to move around the garden depending on the sun. One downside is, however, that the set doesn’t stack particularly well for storing, so we’re going to have to buy a good sized patio furniture cover.

For smaller spaces, this Padstow Outdoor 2 Seater Round Bistro Table and Chairs at DUSK is £139. Coming in a pretty Moss shade, the folding design makes it easy to move and store, while the durable metal frame ensures it stands up to everyday outdoor use.

For those in need of even more seating, Dunelm has this Windsor 8 Seater Large Corner Set available for £599. It’s made up of a stylish corner sofa as well as a glass top table and cushioned bench.

Back at Habitat, for those looking for items to match the set, there’s this Habitat Cali Metal Sunlounger available for £45 , but shoppers can get 20% off with the code GREEN20 at the checkout. I think it would be good if you could purchase some of the chairs from the patio set individually, too, as it would be ideal to turn it into a six-seater set, if we wanted to.

Speaking on the four-seater set, one person noted it ‘looks good and sturdy’, adding that it ‘brightens up the garden’.

Another said: “Really nice looking and comfortable garden set. Very light so easy to move around but at the same time feels very sturdy. Easy to put together but does need two people.”

“Funky and contemporary patio set – gorgeous orange,” wrote a third. “Looks wonderful on patio, grass or Astro.. really pleased with it.”

As noted earlier, it is tricky to put together, and the colour may not be as expected, with another review reading: “Defo a two person job to put together but not impossible. More terracotta than orange but still really nice and worth the price.”

Another wrote: “Love the look of this and it’s very comfortable but deducting a star as it was really a bit of a faff to put the sofa together. The chairs were easier. More of a terracotta colour but seems very sturdy and the table is brilliant. Very reasonable price too.”

But generally, people are as pleased as I am with the Cali set, commenting: “Beautiful and comfortable. We get so many compliments on it every time we have guests.”

With another customer said: “Such a gorgeous set and looks so much more expensive in real life. The colour is beautiful and the fabric feels nice and strong. Bit tricky to build but got the hang of it after the first chair – not as complicated as first thought or as some of the comments allude to. Looks so great in our garden.”

Habitat’s Cali 4 Seater Metal Patio Set is a stylish, comfortable and sturdy set that won’t break the bank but absolutely will be a great focal point in outdoor spaces. Now all that’s required is some sunshine and perhaps a Victoria sponge cake.

Liverpool v Chelsea LIVE: Team news from crucial Premier League clash at Anfield

Liverpool v Chelsea LIVE: Team news from crucial Premier League clash at Anfield

Why spotlight on Liverpool’s dressing room culture is a sign of a changing club

Liverpool set the standards last season. The Premier League table provides some proof those standards have slipped on the pitch; so, too, the total of 18 defeats in all competitions. Yet the attention has been diverted to the standards off the pitch.

Mohamed Salah said he felt the bond in the dressing room is changing; he spoke of his concerns about the mentality in the dressing room. A man whose chiselled physique is testament to his work ethic said players need to get in early to go the gym, which in turn will encourage others to.

For Arne Slot, the culture is not a problem; nor does he think it will be next season when Andy Robertson and Salah, two of the stalwarts of Jurgen Klopp’s great side, depart. Slot argued that there are enough cultural architects already in his side to weather the loss of two influential figures.

If the accusation was flying around that Liverpool were afforded too many days off, they have had fewer this year than in their title-winning campaign under Slot, or their final year under Klopp. One interpretation of their slide this year is that the culture Klopp and his senior players imbued is being dissipated and diluted with time. Slot does not concur.

Chelsea’s remarkable collapse

Things have been going very, very badly for Chelsea recently. They were right in the hunt for Champions League football but have now lost six straight Premier League games to drop to ninth.

Only Joao Pedro’s spectacular late consolation in the 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out stopped them from going goalless for the entirety of that six-game streak…

They are now in serious danger of missing out on European football entirely, trailing seventh-placed Brentford by three points (the exact number of English teams in Europe next season is yet to be determined.

They do still have the FA Cup final against Man City later this month as another potential route to Europe as well.

Liverpool close to Champions League football

Liverpool can take a big step towards Champions League football this lunchtime and maybe even seal it later today.

The Premier League top five will all qualify for competition due to England’s co-efficient and victory for Liverpool would put them nine points clear of Bournemouth in sixth, who only have three games left.

The first of those comes this afternoon away to Fulham, so any dropped points for Andoni Iraola’s side if the Reds have won earlier, would seal the deal for Arne Slot’s side.

Even if not mathematically secure today, Liverpool’s goal difference is nine better than Bournemouth currently, so victory would all but take them there.

Donald Trump congratulates John Swinney after SNP defeat Labour in Scotland

Donald Trump congratulates John Swinney after SNP defeat Labour in Scotland

Donald Trump has congratulated John Swinney on winning power once again following a crushing SNP defeat of Labour in Scotland.

In what could be seen as a thinly veiled attack on Sir Keir Starmer, the US president praised the SNP leader as a “good man” who “deserves this big electoral victory”.

John Swinney’s party took 58 seats, falling short of the 65 needed to win an overall majority, but are by far the largest party in Scottish parliament after Labour and Reform UK both emerged with just 17 seats.

Hours after the result was announced, Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Congratulations to John Swinney on winning his Re-Election for First Minister of Scotland. He is a good man, who worked very hard, along with the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, with respect to Tariff relief for Great Scottish Whiskey – and deserves this Big Electoral Victory!”

The post backs up Mr Swinney’s claim that he worked to deliver the removal of US tariffs on Scottish whiskey, which was announced shortly after the King’s state visit.

The SNP leader was forced to release a thank you text he received from Mr Trump after he was initially mocked on social media for the claim.

The US president’s social media post could perhaps be seen as a swipe at the prime minister, who has suffered from worsening relations with Mr Trump in recent months.

The pair continue to be at odds with each other over the president’s approach to war in the Middle East, with Mr Trump calling Sir Keir “no Winston Churchill” earlier this year.

Sir Keir has faced calls to resign after the disastrous set of elections in Scotland, Wales and local councils across England.

But the prime minister has insisted he “will not walk away” and has vowed to fight on as Labour leader, despite being blamed for losing hundreds of councillors in England and a major humiliation in Wales.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar admitted his party was “hurting” after the result in Scotland.

Asked if he blamed Sir Keir Starmer for the results on Friday, Mr Sarwar said: “Throughout this election campaign, I have tried to make this election about Scotland, I’m not going to change that today.

“Is there a national wave, though, that we tried to overcome and failed to do so? Yes.”

Labour haemorrhaged support in former strongholds while Reform UK made stunning gains and Plaid Cymru became the largest party in a Senedd election that left outgoing First Minister Eluned Morgan without a seat.

The results have reignited rumblings of a leadership contest, with some backbench MPs openly calling on Sir Keir to set out a timetable for his departure and others urging an immediate change in direction.

Richard Burgon, leader of the Socialist Campaign Group of left-wing Labour MPs, demanded Sir Keir set out a timetable for his departure.

“It is clear that Keir has fought his last election as Labour leader and, deep down, he will know it,” he said.

But Sir Keir has defiantly vowed to stand firm as prime minister, with some ministers also insisting there will be no attempt to push him out.

Speaking as the results came in on Friday, Sir Keir vowed: “I’m not going to walk away and plunge the country into chaos.”

The man got out a lighter, lifted a petrol nozzle from a pump and ignited the flame after staff refused to serve him

A man threatened to burn down a Cambridge filling station after staff refused to serve him. Mark Guy, 47, walked up to the Shell filling station in Cambridge on the evening of January 10, 2024, despite previously being banned.

When staff refused to serve him, he immediately became agitated. According to Cambridgeshire Police, Guy walked out to the forecourt where he got out a lighter, lifted a petrol nozzle from the pump and ignited the flame, threatening to “burn the place up”.

The 47-year-old left after a member of staff called police, but he was later identified and arrested when he returned to the filling station in April of that year.

On Thursday, April 30, Guy, of Monkswell, Trumpington, Cambridge, was jailed for one year and three months after pleading guilty to attempted arson at Peterborough Crown Court.

DC Lara Wycherley, who investigated, said: “Guy could not accept he had been banned from the filling station, and quickly became aggressive and threatening towards staff who were just trying to do their job.

“Thankfully no-one was harmed, but Guy is very lucky that his reckless actions didn’t end differently.”

A 23-year-old woman died of a cocaine overdose. Seren Lowri Smith was found unresponsive late on the night of August 29 last year on the floor at her home, Gwent coroner’s court heard.

Ms Smith, of Blackwood in Caerphilly county, had been taking the Class A drug recreationally and died as a result of its toxic effects, said coroner Rose Farmer.

Paramedics provided advanced life support and took Ms Smith to Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, where resuscitation attempts continued, but those efforts failed and death was confirmed at 2.10am on August 30.

Ms Farmer said: “Seren had started using drugs recreationally. There is no evidence to suggest that Seren took cocaine with the intention of ending her life.”

The coroner recorded a conclusion of drug-related death and expressed her condolences to Ms Smith’s family.

UK Health Security Agency issue tick advice to Brits

UK Health Security Agency issue tick advice to Brits

Now, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued some advice as the season for ticks begins to boom.

A spokesperson said: “There is ongoing advice to people on our social channels about being tick aware.

“The tick season in the UK generally peaks from March to October, with peak activity often occurring between April and July.”

How to prevent ticks

Ticks can be prevented by:

  • Wearing long trousers, long sleeved shirt and shoes
  • Wearing a hat and tuck in hair
  • Using an insect repellent (preferably containing the active ingredient DEET)
  • Checking skin, hair and warm skin folds (especially the neck and scalp of children) for ticks, after a day out
  • Checking for ticks and removing any from your pets/ clothing/ outdoor gear
  • Removing any ticks and consulting with a GP if symptoms develop.

Professor Mary Horgan, Chief Medical Officer, said: “Ticks are found right across Ireland and most people who are bitten do not become ill.

“Lyme disease can occasionally cause serious health problems if not diagnosed and treated early so awareness is key.

“People should know where ticks are commonly found, check their skin after spending time outdoors, and seek medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms such as a rash spreading outward from a bite site or flu-like symptoms following a tick bite.”

How to remove an attached tick

  1. If you find an attached tick, remove it by gently gripping it as close to the skin as possible using a pair of fine tipped tweezers or tick removal tool
  2. Pull steadily away from the skin without twisting or crushing the tick
  3. Wash your skin with warm water and soap afterwards, and apply an antiseptic cream to the skin around the bite
  4. Do not use a lit cigarette end, a match head, or substances such as alcohol or petroleum jelly to force the tick out.

Symptoms of tick bites

In some cases, tick bites may cause:

  • swelling
  • itchiness
  • blistering
  • bruising

Tick bites aren’t usually painful but they may cause a red lump to develop where you were bitten.

Many pharmacies and outdoor stores sell tick removal devices. These are useful if you often spend time in areas where there are ticks.

If the tick’s mouthparts break off in the skin and can’t be removed, this may cause irritation but they they should fall out naturally in time.

Do not use a cigarette end, match head, alcohol or petroleum jelly on a tick.
