Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to the UK by the end of the month, as Prince William and Kate Middleton are said to be determined to ‘look forward to the future’
The Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly resolute that the return of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have no bearing on their lives, according to sources close to the couple.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to relocate back to Britain from their Montecito, California home before the end of the month. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, are already reported to be enrolled in schools here in the UK, with the couple set to reside in a non-royal property outside London.
King Charles and his eldest son were told at the same time of Harry and Meghan’s plans to return, with William reportedly “adamant” that there can be “no way back” for the pair to rejoin the Firm, following their departure as senior working royals in 2020.
Since leaving the UK, Harry and Meghan have achieved financial independence from the Royal Family and have undertaken a series of candid interviews about their experiences within the institution, including Harry’s memoir, Spare, in which he made numerous allegations against his relatives.
Close friends of William and Kate have revealed that while they “cannot forgive” the Sussexes for their damaging claims against the Firm, the couple remain determined to “look forward to the future”, reports the Daily Star.
Yet relations between the two couples were markedly warmer when Meghan first arrived in the UK to be with Harry. Upon being introduced to his brother and sister-in-law, Kate is reported to have described Meghan as “friendly”.
However, in his book William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, the Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers reveals that Kate had three rather different words of her own to describe her future sister-in-law.
According to the book, when Kate first met Meghan, she found her somewhat overly familiar, with a “touch of California”.
Furthermore, the Princess of Wales is said to have been less resolute than her husband in attempting to prevent Prince Harry from stepping back from his royal duties, reportedly viewing his departure as “inevitable”.
Kate is also believed to have felt that Harry would always desire more than a “bit part” role within the royal family, and that she “could do no more to bring the brothers together”.
Previously, the Princess of Wales had been widely regarded as a moderating influence as the relationship between Harry and William continued to deteriorate.
