Tests to determine how Elisabeth-Jane Ross died could take “at least another month”.

The test results to establish how a Scottish aid worker died, after her body was found in a suitcase in Greece, could be delayed for another month.

Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, known as Lisa, was found dead by a homeless man in a derelict building in the Kypseli area of Athens on Saturday, July 18, after travelling there from Edinburgh on June 26. Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, has since appeared in court in the Greek capital on suspicion of killing the aid worker, along with weapons offences and robbery charges.

Local police said they were fast-tracking tests as a priority. However, spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou has said that the results could take “at least another month”, according to the BBC.

The coroner’s report initially cited an undetermined cause of death, as the body showed no signs of external trauma. Then “asphyxiation was listed as the probable cause of death” following a more detailed investigation, autopsy and post-mortem examination.

On Thursday, Ahmadzai – a professional boxer from Afghanistan – arrived at the Court of First Instance in Athens where he was detained on illegal weapons possession charges and a charge of homicide with intent. Ahmadzai’s lawyer Christos Erdos confirmed his client did not speak during Thursday’s hearing.

He did not submit a plea in relation to any of the three charges he faces. It is understood he denies murder and claims he found Lisa already dead on the bathroom floor.

Ahmadzai was remanded in custody until his trial, which could take up to 18 months.

The court complex is located on the city’s Evelpidon Street, a short walk from the derelict building where the charity worker’s body was found. Floral tributes have been placed on the ground next to the structure, with one card containing the words “Elisabeth-Jane Ross. Rest in peace” written in Greek.

Police said the suspect was detained for questioning after investigators reviewed surveillance camera footage recorded nearby. After allegedly killing Ms Ross, Ahmadzai is accused of sending a series of messages from her phone to her friends and family before switching off the device.

He is then said to have bought another phone and texted her friends in Athens, including his wife, impersonating an unnamed jihadist saying he had killed the Scot because of her religion, Greek newspapers Proto Thema and Ta Nea reported. The newspapers said his wife, a US citizen named Alaina Hall, told the police she suspected her husband’s involvement in the killing when she woke up to find he was not in their apartment and tracked his phone to where Ms Ross was staying.

Ahmadzai’s lawyer has also claimed that his “have been violated”. In a statement released to the media, Paraschis-Erdas and Associates said that a the leak of “information and documents” amounted to the violation.

The firm claimed that there were “no injuries whatsoever“ and that “there was a complete absence of any obvious cause of death”.

The statement continued: “His approach toward the prosecutorial and investigating authorities was therefore not one of refusal to cooperate, but rather one of reservation, so that he could provide a full statement once the case file had been completed with the above essential documents.

“These documents had not been sought by the pre-trial investigating authorities. The sole objective is to establish the substantive truth, for the benefit of both sides.”

Ms Ross is believed to have died a number of days before she was found, during which time temperatures reached 36C. Authorities were able to identify her using fingerprints.

Her family paid tribute days after she was identified. A statement read: “Lisa will always be remembered by us as kind, principled and selfless.

“Her integrity was absolute, and she dedicated her life to helping others in need. We are in deep pain, and we ask for time and privacy as we come to terms with our loss.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “Our thoughts are with Elisabeth’s family during this difficult time. We are providing consular support and are in contact with the local authorities.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are liaising with authorities in Greece. Officers are providing support to her family in Scotland.”

The Met Office expects temperatures to rise from Monday (August 9) and reach 30C by Tuesday and 31C on Wednesday.

Clear skies are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday turning to clouds and highs of 23C-26C at the end of next week.

It comes as a yellow heat health alert was issued for York on Saturday until Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the heat alert and warned the latest high temperatures could put extra pressure on the NHS, with more vulnerable people likely to require medical treatment.

While many remarked that they hadn’t picked up on the double entendres in childhood, the episode in fact didn’t make it to air. 

Instead, the scenes were filmed for a ‘Christmas Tape’, a TV tradition in the Seventies that would see outtakes, bloopers and specially shot material put together to be watched at the work Christmas party.

Yet while Rainbow fans may have been fooled by the racy footage, there is no shortage of children’s TV shows that were in fact brimming with inappropriate material.  

The Magic Roundabout followed the adventures of dog Dougal and friends in a magical garden but the show was was accused of making several references to drug use

The Magic Roundabout 

First airing in 1965, The Magic Roundabout followed the adventures of dog Dougal and friends in a magical garden. 

The claymation classic used footage from the French stop motion animation show Le Manège enchanté but with different scripts and characters.

However, the series – which ran on the BBC for 12 years – was accused of making several references to drug use.

Dougal, who had an addiction to sugar cubes, famously claimed: ‘It starts with some sweets…and then you’re on two bags a day.’

One episode also saw the dog attend a party where he spoke with a banana and a pear before having no memory of it the next day. 

His best friend Dylan, a rabbit who plays guitar and sleeps a lot, was said to be parodying a stoner. 

Ermintrude the cow was seen chewing on a flower that resembled an opiate poppy.

Serge Danot, who created Le Manège enchanté, denied it was a take on drug culture, with his widow Martine later exclaiming: ‘On drugs? No, absolutely not. 

‘They were all sweet characters created entirely for children, Of course, they were products of their age, the 1960s, but drugs? No. 

‘Maybe that’s the way you saw it in Britain, but I can assure you that here in France nobody thinks or thought that.’

British actor and scriptwriter Eric Thompson, who was responsible for adapting the French show, also denied the claims. 

Children Of The Stones

Despite being designed for kids, the 1977 series Children of the Stones was terrifying enough that it creeped out many adults. 

The series followed scientist Adam Brake (Gareth Thomas) and his son Matthew (Peter Demin) who arrive in the sleepy English village of Milbury to find it under the grip of weird psychic powers unleashed by the sinister village squire, Hendrick, and whose power they struggle to break.

In 2012, comedian Stewart Lee narrated a documentary on the series for BBC Radio Four, introducing it as ‘the scariest programme ever made for children’. 

Meanwhile, the music was described as ‘the most inappropriate theme music ever used for a children’s series’. 

The cult classic is since said to have paved the way for spooky shows such as  Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Pee-wee’s Playhouse 

In one episode of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Miss Yvonne (Lynne Marie Stewart) raised eyebrows with her very enthusiastic reaction to a horse ride

The 1986 series Pee-wee’s Playhouse followed the wacky daily adventures of exuberant man-child Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) in his gadget-filled playhouse in Puppetland.

Pee-wee’s Playhouse was designed as an educational yet entertaining show for children – yet one scene left a bad taste in viewers mouths.   

In one episode, Miss Yvonne (Lynne Marie Stewart) raised eyebrows with her very enthusiastic reaction to a horse ride. 

Miss Yvonne – known as the most beautiful woman in Puppetland – made some rather suspicious noises while rocking herself backwards and forth on a horse, then hopped off with her hair all messed up and out of breath. 

Rocko’s Modern Life 

Rocko’s Modern Life featured several adult innuendos, including Rocko’s brief stint as a telephone operator implied to be a sex hotline

Throughout its run, the 1993 Nickelodeon series Rocko’s Modern Life was  controversial for its adult humour, including innuendos and satirical social commentary. 

The series followed the surreal life of an easily frightened Australian immigrant wallaby named Rocko who encounters various dilemmas and situations regarding otherwise mundane aspects of life.

Rocko’s Modern Life featured several adult innuendos, including Rocko’s brief stint as a telephone operator implied to be a sex hotline, where an instruction sheet notes employees to ‘Be Hot, Be Naughty, and Be Courteous’, while he flatly repeats ‘Oh baby’ into the phone. 

The show’s fictional restaurant, Chokey Chicken, was also based on the phrase ‘to choke the chicken’ – a slang term for masturbation – but this was changed to Chewey Chicken after complaints. 

Another episode was also yanked off air after it showed Bev Bighead the frog attempting to seduce Rocko, prompting several complaints. 

Such was the level of thinly veiled adult material in the show’s run that it was found that adults made up more than one-fifth of the audience. 

All That

Nickelodeon’s All That was credited with launching the careers of Amanda Bynes, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell – but it wasn’t without controversy.

The 1994 series featured short comic sketches and weekly musical guests aimed toward a young audience.

Yet some of the sketches seemed to be designed with adults in mind, notably the recurring Pickle Boy skit.

On the show Brian Peck, aka Pickle Boy, would give a pickle to each celebrity guest, with one example seeing Ray Romano in the bathroom begging for something to eat when Pickle Boy gives him a pickle through a hole in the door.

In the skit, Pickle Boy slid a pickle through a ‘glory hole’ design, with Ray then chomping down on the snack.  

In another clip, there’s a comment about how Pickle Boy ‘likes to hurt and tease pickles’. 

While the skit raised eyebrows at the time, it took on an even more disturbing turn when Brian was later arrested on 11 counts of lewd acts and sexual abuse involving a minor. 

He pleaded no contest to charges of a lewd act against a child and oral copulation, serving 16 months in prison. He was forced to register as a lifetime sex offender.

The Powerpuff Girls 

In one episode, prison assualt was implied when Mojo Jojo was seen clinging to the prison bars looking alarmed while a large prisoner leered at him ominously in their cell

The Powerpuff Girls was designed to champion female empowerment with its star characters Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup – three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers who would keep the town of Townsville safe.

Yet there was one scene in 1998 series that proved inappropriate, after the trio beat up Mojo Jojo and put him in jail. 

Mojo Jojo – the mutated chimpanzee mad scientist – was then seen clinging to the prison bars looking alarmed while a large prisoner leered at him ominously in their cell. 

During that scene, the narrator said: ‘Love is in the air, can’t you just smell it?’ suggesting Mojo Jojo was set to be assaulted in prison. 

Zoey 101 

In the episode, Zoey is accidentally sprayed her with a yellowish-green liquid candy called a ‘goo pop’, with a co-star remarking it looked like a ‘c*m shot’

Another Nickelodeon show that raised eyebrows was the 2005 series Zoey 101, which followed the lives of Zoey Brooks (Jamie Lynn Spears), her brother Dustin (Paul Butcher) and her friends as they attend Pacific Coast Academy, a fictional boarding school in Southern California.

The series was created by Dan Schneider, who later faced several allegations of inappropriate behavior towards the under-age stars. 

Following the backlash, fans started to view the show differently, with Alexa Nikolas, who played Nicole Bristow, recalling one scene in which Jamie Lynn continuously had goo squirted on her face. 

In the episode, Zoey is accidentally sprayed her with a yellowish-green liquid candy called a ‘goo pop’ – but the scene was reportedly shot several times until the goo hit Zoey squarely on her forehead, dripping down her face and mouth.

Alexa recalled she heard one of her male teenage castmates say at the time: ‘It’s like a c*m shot’, with that shot making it into the show.

‘We’re talking about a minor,’ Alexa said. ‘I think Jamie was 13, and they’re squirting stuff on her face to make it look a certain way.’ 

A person close to Schneider said that ‘the goo was green, just like Nickelodeon’s famous slime’, adding: ‘This episode aired and was seen by millions of people and (to our knowledge) not one viewer ever had a concern.’

Victorious

In Victorious, Ariana Grande’s character was seen trying to cure her boredom by putting her toe in her mouth and pouring water on herself upside-down

Nickelodeon’s Victorious is another Dan Schneider series that fans are looking back at through a different lens. 

The 2010 series launched Ariana Grande’s career after being casted as highschooler Cat Valentine, yet some episodes saw her try to cure her boredom by putting her toe in her mouth, pouring water on herself upside-down and trying to get juice out of a potato by squeezing it.

During these activities she also made bizarre squealing sounds while saying suggestive lines like ‘give up the juice’ and ‘I’m thirsty’.

The episodes were analysed in Quiet On Set, a docuseries examining the toxic culture behind children’s shows, with Buzzfeed writer Scaachi Koul saying of the moment: ‘Who are sexual innuendos for on a kids’ show?’

The actor revealed things have been tough work wise since he left the BBC soap

Former EastEnders star Matthew James Morrison has candidly admitted he has no work lined up a year after leaving the BBC soap. The actor played Felix Baker for three years and made history during his time in Walford as the man behind Tara Misu, EastEnders‘ first regular drag queen character.

Matthew left Albert Square in 2025 after soap bosses decided to write Felix out of the show, and while he has landed theatre roles since his departure, he has now found himself facing an uncertain future.

Speaking on the Missleighdingfortunes podcast, hosted by drag performer Miss Leigh Ding, Matthew opened up about his career while having a tarot card reading.

Reflecting on leaving EastEnders, he said: “I finished EastEnders and I thought you know, maybe something will come, maybe something might not come.

“For a lot of people who’ve left the show since I started, some of them have worked, some of them haven’t worked.”

Matthew initially kept busy after leaving Walford, landing a theatre role in Greenwich, south east London, before heading into another stage production.

However, after recently finishing a tour, the actor admitted he is now without another job to move on to.

He said: “This is the first time since really leaving EastEnders – I finished the tour over a week ago – and I don’t have anything lined up.

“It feels like I am stood in the desert just being like what do I do next?”

Matthew then pondered what his next move could be, suggesting he could use the downtime to develop new skills, including learning to ride a horse or mastering another accent.

His admission comes around a year after it emerged that bosses had decided to call time on Felix’s stint in Walford.

At the time, a source said: “It’s never an easy decision for bosses when they have to make the decision for a character to leave.

“Matthew has been great, but bosses felt the time was right to say goodbye to Felix.”

Matthew joined EastEnders as part of the Baker family, alongside Felix’s father Avery and brother Finlay.

Avery died shortly after the family’s arrival in Walford, while Finlay, played by Ashley Byam, later departed the soap too.

Felix went on to become a familiar face behind the bar at The Albert, but his role became less prominent before his eventual departure.

His character also broke new ground for the long-running BBC soap through his drag alter ego, Tara Misu.

Speaking about the role after joining the soap, Matthew said: “I am blessed to have the opportunity to step into the heels of the fierce Tara Misu as part of my role on EastEnders.

“It’s a privilege to represent the LGBTQIA+ community and to showcase the creative art of drag to both viewers at home and the residents of Walford.”

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed an unexpected reaction from guests when he turned up at Kaleb Cooper’s wedding in a striking car

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed the bizarre mistake guests made when they spotted his car at Kaleb Cooper’s wedding. The former Top Gear star had turned up in a rather eye-catching motor – but it appears the vehicle left some wedding guests scratching their heads.

The Clarkson’s Farm star made the revelation while reviewing a new Peugeot in his Sunday Times motoring column. Jeremy had been handed the keys to a 1.2-litre Peugeot 408 GT Premium Hybrid 145 e-DSC6 and took the chance to put it through its paces.

But despite having the Peugeot available, Jeremy admitted he opted for a very different motor for the 50-mile journey.

With the sun shining, he chose an open-top Jaguar F-Type and described the drive through the countryside as “all very perfect” – until he got closer to the show.

The motoring presenter soon found himself surrounded by fellow garden enthusiasts heading to the event and was less than impressed with their driving.

He described the motorists as “woefully slow” and “unbelievably timid”, claiming they would refuse to overtake cyclists on wide, straight roads.

But the Peugeot eventually got its moment in the spotlight when Jeremy took it to Kaleb’s wedding. And it seems the car caused some confusion among the guests.

Writing about the striking metallic red Peugeot, Jeremy said: “I took it to Kaleb’s wedding one day and people there mistook it for an Alfa Romeo.”

The Clarkson’s Farm star joked that the car would be equally at home at a “beetle drive” or a Jägerbomb-filled night out.

He quipped: “This, then, would sit at a beetle drive as comfortably as a Jägerbomb.”

Jeremy was initially surprised by the Peugeot’s appearance, admitting that the model was “glorious but slightly scary” before conceding: “And, whisper this, it was quite attractive too.”

However, he was far less complimentary about the inside. He said the steering wheel was “the size of a shirt button” and claimed it sat in such a position that drivers could not properly see the fuel reading or their speed.

A large screen also left him unimpressed, with Jeremy describing the interior as confusing. His partner Lisa, meanwhile, apparently had her own verdict, describing it as a “Lego car”.

Despite his criticisms, Jeremy noted that the Peugeot was considerably cheaper than the model it replaces. But when it came to driving, he was blunt, describing the car as “Slow, uninspiring and dreary”.

His final verdict was similarly cutting. Jeremy concluded: “If you would like a 1.2-litre Peugeot 408 GT Premium Hybrid 145 e-DSC6, then buy one. If you wouldn’t, don’t?”

It comes after Jeremy Clarkson claimed he once pitched the idea for Clarkson’s Farm to the BBC, only for it to be rejected. The presenter had a long relationship with the broadcaster through Top Gear, which he fronted alongside Richard Hammond and James May before the trio moved on to The Grand Tour.

Jeremy is now best known for his Amazon Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm, but he claims the show could have looked very different.

Writing in The Sun, Jeremy discussed the BBC’s decision to move a number of productions to Salford in 2011. He said: “When I pitched the idea of doing a farming show to a BBC commissioner way back when, he only had one question about it: ‘Where would it be produced?’ I told him London, and he said, ‘Well, we don’t want it then’.”

Labour has pushed ahead of Reform in the polls after hard-Left voters flocked back to the party under Andy Burnham, new analysis reveals today. 

The Mail’s poll-of-polls puts Labour on 25 per cent, a point ahead of Nigel Farage‘s party in the week he contests a by-election in his Clacton constituency amid questions over his and the party’s finances.

The leapfrogging appears to have been powered by voters ditching Zack Polanski‘s Green Party, which having threatened to challenge the main parties earlier this year has experienced a decline in popularity.

Once he returns from a holiday he is to kick off a national tour this week to ask the public how the Government can improve their lives.

Officials said the Prime Minister would be in ‘listening mode’ as he spends much of the rest of August travelling the country to discuss the cost of living and improving high streets.

But Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride accused Mr Burnham of ‘breathtaking hypocrisy’, arguing Labour tax hikes and ‘red tape’ were ‘hammering our high streets’, forcing businesses to close and driving up prices for consumers.

Voters in Clacton go to the polls on Thursday after Mr Farage stood down as an MP to trigger a by-election.

The Reform UK leader is standing for re-election and is one of 34 candidates on the 3ft-long ballot paper.

But none of the largest parties in Westminster – Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats – are in the running, having dismissed the poll as a stunt.

Mr Farage is being investigated by the parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg over a £5million gift from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne, which he received before taking his seat in the Commons.

The investigation, looking at whether he should have declared the money when he arrived in Parliament, was suspended on his resignation, but is likely to resume if he wins the by-election.

If he is found to have broken the rules and a suspension of more than ten days is imposed, it could trigger a recall petition and the prospect of Mr Farage losing his seat, forcing a second contest.

Mr Farage previously said he has ‘not broken the law in any way at all’ and warned the standards probe was ‘now being used as a political tool’.

The Green decline has coincided with Mr Polanski admitting he failed to pay council tax while living on a boat in London.

After facing criticism that he does not speak about the environment much, Mr Polanski last night said the UK should be investing money in defending the country against the climate crisis rather than listening to Donald Trump on security spending.

The Green leader reiterated his view that the climate crisis is ‘the biggest threat to our national security since the Second World War’. 

Appearing at Iain Dale All Talk at the Edinburgh Fringe, he was asked by an audience member whether he and his party agree with increasing defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP when there are ‘so many competing environmental needs’.

Mr Polanski said that if defence spending includes money for climate adaptation such as dealing with floods and wildfires then we ‘clearly need to up our spending’.

He suggested that was more important than listening to US President Donald Trump, who has called for Nato allies to shoulder more of the burden of European defence.

Mr Polanski said: ‘If we’re talking about spending 3.5 per cent of our GDP on military spending to please Donald Trump, then I think there’s an absolute incoherency in that.

‘We’re already, I think, one of the fifth biggest spenders on military capacity, and actually, I think we need to look at defence as a much more holistic issue.

‘I said this week, and I really believe, that the climate crisis is the biggest threat to our national security since the Second World War.

‘It’s not some distant threat – it’s right here, right now. We’ve had wildfires not far away from here, where we’re talking in Edinburgh, and we know that what’s happening right now is not the new normal.

‘This is the beginning of what will be the least extreme temperatures and least extreme weather in our lifetimes.

On Saturday (August 8), The Bolton News attended the launch of This Place, located in the courtyard area of Chill at the Cowshed in Winter Hey Lane.

The chic new lifestyle store sells homeware, gifts and handmade finds, mainly sourced from businesses in and around Bolton.

Upon entering, we were greeted by Jo and Holly Leece, the mother-and-daughter duo behind the business.

Holly, 27, who manages the shop, told us how the venture came about.

“It’s been a huge family project that’s brought us together,” she said.

“My dad did the renovation, my sister has been doing the social media, and I’ve put the shop together visually and worked with suppliers.

“It’s a mum and daughter venture, but my mum has been the brains behind it all.”

Discussing her inspiration, Holly said: “I’ve always had a love for homeware. I used to make candles, and I’m starting my own luxury candle and homeware brand.

“This is hopefully a stepping stone to that.

“I’m excited to see what people in Horwich like, and don’t like, about it, and we can grow together as a community.

“So far, it’s gone down very well.”

Bolton-born-and-bred, Holly also spent some time living in Didsbury, a suburb scattered with independent businesses that has established itself as one of Manchester’s trendiest spots.

“I wanted to bring some of Didsbury’s unique style to Horwich,” she said.

“There’s not much like it around here. It’s something different for everyone to try.

“Working in the shop is my dream and I love speaking to people.

“It’s been a labour of love.”

Holly’s keen eye for design is evident throughout the shop, with her background in film and photography helping to shape its carefully considered layout.

She spent four years as a medical photographer before going travelling with her husband.

“I started that job in lockdown and thought I owed it to myself to see what I would do if it wasn’t for lockdown.

“It’s very different to medical photography,” joked Holly.

In just over a month, Holly’s dad transformed the former space into a shop just as unique as the items it sells.

Located next to Button Boutique and in the courtyard of Chill at the Cowshed café, the shop has already found a warm welcome from its neighbours.

Asked about her thoughts on the location, Holly said: “They are the most amazing people.

“The women at Button Boutique have been so supportive, as have The Cowshed staff.

“They have given us so much advice and really helped along the way.

“It’s felt like a community from day one and more than anything, that’s been the best part about it.”

The shop personifies dopamine décor, an interior design trend focused on creating spaces that boost your mood and spark joy.

There were funky in-house prints, with slogans such as “It’s Mint Up North”, as well as brightly coloured crockery featuring sayings such as “good food and good company”.

“We’ve got a mix of local suppliers and interesting suppliers from across the UK,” said Holly.

Walking through the shop introduced us to one of its main suppliers, Lake District brand Bath House.

Bath House was born out of a respect for the natural world and a desire to create skincare and fragrances inspired by the land we live in.

“Their products are really luxurious,” said Holly.

The most popular products so far have been Bolton-based Sugar Spun Sister Chocolates and Mallow and Moo candles.

The shop also sells Studio Black Coffee, a Bolton-owned small-batch speciality coffee roastery.

“We’ve nearly sold out of their coffee in just two days,” said Holly.

This Place is open every day except Wednesday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm during the week and 9.30am to 3.30pm on Saturdays.

The FIFA president is coming under fire following failed plans to sell shares in the World Cup and the Club World Cup.

The president of the Spanish La Liga, Javier Tebas, has hit out at both Gianni Infantino and FIFA amid growing pressure on the leader of football’s governing body. There are calls for him to resign after the failed plans to sell shares in the World Cup.

The plans faced a huge backlash, with UEFA threatening to boycott tournaments should the plans go through. While they have now been scrapped, Infantino has refused to step down from his role, with FIFA claiming he has their ‘full support‘.

Both the Football Association and the Welsh FA are among those to formally withdraw their support for Infantino ahead of the FIFA elections in March next year. To win the election, he needs the support of 106 of the 211 associations, which looks far from certain.

La Liga chief Tebas is the latest to speak out against the FIFA president. Speaking to Le Monde he didn’t hold back on his thoughts.

“What is happening does not surprise me. What does surprise me is the reaction of many people who remained silent for years,” he said.

“This episode is only the tip of the iceberg of what has been going on within an institution, FIFA, but also more broadly in football, where there are no real governance policies. And the problem is not limited to one person: It is about an entire system.

“The old system can persist even when the people change. Let’s hope things truly change, that a new leader arrives, and that new governance is established at FIFA.”

Speaking specifically about Infantino, he added: “For me, Gianni Infantino’s time has long since passed. I’m not saying this because of recent events; I have noticed this style of management for a long time, though everyone else seems to be discovering it only now.

“Look at the organisation of the Club World Cup, what happened in the effort to make it profitable… Decisions were made without key stakeholders in football – the leagues – even being informed. That is how things have been managed for years.

“And I have not forgotten the Super League episode, where Gianni Infantino appeared in the working documents of the league’s promoters. In fact, there are connections: Some of the same actors from that time are now involved in the FIFA Forward Enterprise project.

“Gianni Infantino is not someone who contributes to the growth of football. On the contrary, his projects are destroying the very essence of the sport: the national leagues.

“Football is not limited to the elite. For me, the Infantino era is over.

“What remains to be seen is when that will take effect and how the succession will unfold. I hope it is not just a matter of swapping out some people for others, but of a genuine overhaul.”
