Bibek Kumal, a 24-year-old Nepali labourer, was digging a 1.5 m deep toilet pit beside a newly constructed house when he heard a distinct hissing sound. Seconds later, a torrent of mud, water and rock tore through the site, sweeping him and everything nearby away.

Working in Bidur, downstream from the severely impacted Rasuwa district near Nepal‘s border with Tibet, Kumal was warned by four co-workers standing above who shouted at him to run. By the time he managed to scramble out, his colleagues had already fled.

“I started running. Then a wall of water came thundering down as if it was an earthquake,” Kumal said from his bed at Kathmandu’s National Trauma Centre, his brother Dinesh sitting beside him.

Palace officials say Norwegian King Harald's health worsens

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norwegian King Harald was in “very serious condition” as his health deteriorated, palace officials said Thursday, prompting the queen and Crown Prince Haakon to cancel their engagements.

The 89-year-old monarch, who has hemolytic anemia and has been on sick leave for several weeks, was admitted to the National Hospital in Oslo earlier this month. His condition had previously stabilized following a bacterial blood infection but the royal palace on Thursday said it had worsened.

Haakon, his son, has been serving as regent during the king’s time in the hospital.

Harald, who has been monarch since 1991, has been in and out of the hospital several times in recent years.

Putin tells Britain to reverse ‘hostile line’ on Ukraine or Russia could hit UK military targets

Putin has told Britain to reverse its 'hostile line' on Ukraine or Russia could hit UK military targets

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has told Britain to reverse its ‘hostile line’ on Ukraine or Russia could hit UK military targets.

The warning comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham was told Britain could face Russian retaliation over its support for Ukraine and to be prepared for a ‘direct response’ from Moscow.

On Monday, the new premier swapped blueprints for the long-range Scalp missile with Moscow’s enemy in a visit to Kiev, that would allow Ukraine to build their own weapons, rather than rely on imports.

Moscow accused the UK of ‘participating’ in his war with Ukraine and warned that their forces were intent on identifying ‘the production sites of such missiles, the production sites of other military equipment’ in order to destroy them.

As such, UK security chiefs have been primed for a Kremlin attack on Britain – either towards Mr Burnham or by targeting defence sites.

Major UK defence manufacturers participating in weapons production are believed to be stepping up their physical security and adopting measures to prevent cyber attacks.

Putin’s warning comes a day after CIA director John Ratcliffe made a surprise trip to Moscow where he issued a warning to the Kremlin not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine, either by using a nuclear weapon or targeting Kyiv’s Western allies.

The ‘just don’t do it’ advice was based on US intelligence that Russia is primed to act immediately and dramatically after its campaign on the battlefield stalled again.

US officials are concerned Moscow could attempt to seize Nato territory on its eastern flank within weeks, while fears are brewing of a major cyber attack.

Following the visit, the Kremlin hinted it was not looking for peace with the West, warning ‘it is too early to say if the deep crisis in US-Russia relations can be overcome’, before boasting ‘Ukraine is definitely losing the war’.

Before departing No. 10, Sir Keir Starmer had warned Russia could launch an attack on a Nato country in the next four years, western intelligence assessments had indicated.

Putin had earlier been advised the new incumbent in No10 would be ‘softer than [Sir Keir] Starmer’ but the despot’s hopes were dashed by the PM’s efforts to fortify the UK-Ukraine military alliance in recent weeks.

A senior source told the Daily Mail earlier this week: ‘The question being asked is, “How long do we keep poking the bear before it bites?”

‘An attack on the UK’s defence and security infrastructure is inevitable, based on our high-profile support for Ukraine.

‘Ourselves and the French are front and centre, and Burnham’s visit to Kyiv and his forthright stance will have been noticed at the Kremlin.

‘There had been some optimism in Moscow that he would be softer than Starmer on Ukraine.

‘That was not the case. Russia will want to make a statement, through actions rather than words. That could be a drone attack, or an arson attack. There are Russian sleeper cells in this country that could do either.’

The source added: ‘Russia is testing our security infrastructure on a daily basis… Something bigger is only a matter of time. Russia just needs to keep it low enough to avoid a military response by Nato.’

Other sources said that Russia’s sudden withdrawal of its ambassador to London was being taken as a sign that ‘something big is coming’.

It was reported earlier this week that Britons will be urged by the Government to stock up on tinned food and bottled water in case of emergencies like extreme weather, cyber attacks or hostile state action.

This is a breaking story, more to follow.

Working 9 To 5 ‘until the day she died’: Dolly Parton was planning an avatar show, a biopic, a musical documentary and a scripted series in the months leading up to her death

Published

on

Dolly Parton worked 'up until the day she died' and had created 'a project roadmap' to guide her team 'for decades to come' her manager has revealed

Dolly Parton worked ‘up until the day she died’ on projects including an avatar show.

The legendary country singer’s passing at the age of 80 was confirmed Tuesday in an Instagram video posted by her nephew Bryan Seaver, prompting an outpouring of grief worldwide.

The musician died after ‘a brief battle with cancer‘, and was admitted to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on Friday, where she died four days later.

She was also dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues prior to her death, but despite her ailing health continued to work as hard as ever in her final months and was exploring new ways to tour her music, including an avatar show.

Inspired by the likes of ABBA, whose hugely successful ABBA Voyage residency has been running in a purpose-built London venue for four years, Dolly and her team were collaborating with companies that create ‘avatar performances’ shortly before her death.

Speaking just four days before her death, Dolly said that she was looking into an avatar show to ensure fans could still have access to live performances of her music, after cancelling her Las Vegas residency last year due to ill health.

‘I hate to cancel anything I’m committed to, but I just couldn’t do the shows at the level I would want them to be, and in the way that I know my fans would expect them to be,’ she explained.

Dolly Parton worked ‘up until the day she died’ and had created ‘a project roadmap’ to guide her team ‘for decades to come’ her manager has revealed

‘I definitely plan to do special performances in the future, but I won’t tour anymore like I used to. But, you know, we’ve been working with some of those companies who make those avatar performances, and we are in early stages of development on that.’

‘It is just crazy what technology can do these days. So, I’m hopin’ to launch a big show like that right here in Nashville soon. Isn’t that just wild? I’ll be like George Jones — they used to call him ‘No Show Jones’ — I won’t have to show up in person but I still get paid! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.’

Dolly’s avatar plans came just months after the Osbourne family announced that late rocker Ozzy is to be made into an AI avatar to appear on interactive touchscreens that will be placed in yet-to-be disclosed locations in the US and UK later this year.

Dolly’s longtime manager Danny Nozell said in a statement on Wednesday that the superstar had created ‘a project roadmap’ to help guide her team on her career after her death.

‘Dolly worked up until the day she died. She loved seeing her dreams come to life and loved knowing her work brought people joy,’ Nozell said.

‘Ever the planner, Dolly worked with the team that she handpicked for the past several years to build a project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come.’

‘As the leader of the team responsible for overseeing her legacy, we will ensure the many dreams she had yet to fulfill are brought to life,’ Nozell promised fans.

‘Many projects were in various stages of development, and we want to be transparent with her fans about this fact. If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it,’ he added.

The various planned projects include the avatar show, a musical documentary, a biopic, a docuseries, a scripted series and an animated series based on her Billy the Kid book franchise.

There are also a number of projects with planned release dates for this year including Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops which will celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week beginning September 13.

Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel in Nashville has its grand opening on September 29.

Other projects include: A line of Dolly Dolls launching online on September 15; Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum’s grand opening on September 29; Dolly’s Cup of Ambition Coffee launching online September 29 and Dolly on the Holly – an upcoming Christmas-themed project and merchandise range.

Dolly’s Dog Treats are scheduled for early 2027, along with Dolly Bedding & Home Decor debuting in the third quarter of next year.

In addition, previews for Dolly: A True Original Musical on Broadway begin in early December.

The hit show will then officially open January 19 on what would’ve been Dolly’s 81st birthday following a sold-out run in her Nashville hometown last summer.

The country legend wrote the music and book and served as producer of the rags-to-riches show helmed by Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher and choreographed by Mandy Moore.

‘Now, this isn’t about a story about sparkle and shine on the outside,’ Dolly said in a video last month.

‘It’s about where I really come from, what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved and how I’ve found my way and told it in my own words and through the music that’s been part of me every step of the journey.’

The national treasure added: ‘Now, the musical has some of my big hits plus a lot of brand new songs that I’ve written just for the show. This really is a dream come true…and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!’

Dolly: A True Original Musical will take audiences on a journey through her life, ‘from her barefoot beginnings in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee to performing in platform heels under the bright lights of Hollywood’.

Dolly left fans one final gift with an unreleased song which is set to be released on her 100th birthday in 20 years time. The song is kept on a CD in a locked box at Dollywood

The song is kept on a CD in a locked box at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort in TennesseeTitled ‘My Place In History,’ Dolly wrote the song back in 2015, the same year she opened the DreamMore Resort.

‘I don’t know if I want to live to be 100 or not. But you never know,’ Dolly wrote in her 2020 book, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics.  ‘I might, and if I do, I’m going to be at that opening.’

‘There’s no telling what music is going to be by then,’ she joked: ‘Hopefully, it will play and the whole thing ain’t rotted.’

The song is contained in a chestnut ‘Dream Box’ displayed in a glass case and also features a piece of wood from the front porch of her childhood home in Sevierville, Tennessee, where she grew up singing with her 11 siblings.

As well as planning decades of future projects, Dolly also planned the announcement of her death.

One of her nephews, Bryan Seaver, who also acted as her head of security for many years, recorded a video at her request to release after her death.

‘This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,’ he told fans.

‘As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.’

Tenerife hit by four earthquakes as residents rocked by tremors

Published

Manchester Evening News

In total four earthquakes were recorded in Tenerife

Several earthquakes have been recorded northeast of Tenerife, including one which was strong enough to be felt by residents on the Spanish island.

According to reports from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), several earthquakes were detected on Wednesday, with magnitudes ranging from 2.3 to 3.6 on the Richter scale. The strongest tremor occurred at 6.37pm at a depth of around 34km, Canarian Weekly reports.

It was strong enough to be felt by members of the public in La Laguna. No damage or injuries have been reported.

In total there were four earthquakes. Two of them occurred at depths of 35 and 36km, registering magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.3 respectively. The fourth earthquake was much shallower, at a depth of 16km, with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale.

According to the IGN, this particular area does not normally experience a high number of earthquakes. This indicates that the tremors are likely to be associated with tectonic activity rather than volcanic activity.

The Canary Islands do experience regular seismic activity due to their volcanic and geological setting. Many small earthquakes are detected by monitoring equipment but aren’t noticed by residents.

It’s not the first time Tenerife has been rocked by earthquakes this year. In February the island experienced a series of ‘earthquake swarms’ with more than 6,000 minor tremors recorded in 21 days.

Another house is rammed in Middlesbrough amid fears of gang violence outbreak after girl, seven, was ‘murdered’ and fatal wrong-way crash

A home on Steele Crescent in the South Bank area of Middlebrough was rammed by a car today

Another house in Middlesbrough was rammed today amid fears of an escalating gang violence outbreak in the town after a girl and her aunt were killed in a house fire.

Valentina Foster, seven, and Natalie McDonald, 34, died in the blaze close to South Bank, where the collision that killed seven people on the A66 took place on Saturday.

Two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody amid concerns the incident was a revenge attack linked to the road crash.

Today, residents in South Bank woke up to news of another property being rammed by a car as the area continues to be plagued by crime in the aftermath of the smash.

A terraced home on Steele Crescent was attacked – with the front garden wall hit in the early hours of this morning, leaving bricks and a metal fence across the grass.

A neighbour said this morning: ‘It happened at about 12.40am. My daughter saw it. She said a car kept going backwards and forwards into the wall over and over.

‘People on the outside think it’s scary but it doesn’t bother me. I’ve grown up here and it’s normal. There’s always something going on here.’

The Daily Mail contacted Cleveland Police today for a statement on the latest car ramming – which follows another that happened in the hours before the A66 crash.

It comes as balaclava-clad men on motorbikes joined a balloon release in memory of three of the five young men who died in the A66 crash that killed two police officers.

Friends and relatives of Jacob Matusiak, 23, and 17-year-olds Cole Worthy and Theo Rae, congregated on a grassy area in Middlesbrough from 5pm yesterday.

Blue smoke from flares filled the air and children were among those gathered next to the East Middlesbrough Events Centre, previously known as Middlebeck Social Club.

Messages have been spray-painted on the building reading: ‘RIP The Boys’, ‘Never Be Forgotten RIP The Lads’ and the initials of those in the car with ‘Rest easy boys’.

Community group Active Tees Valley (ATV), which operates the venue, has criticised the vandalism, saying that ‘damaging buildings that are being used to support local residents ultimately impacts the same community we are all trying to look after’.

ATV added: ‘We would respectfully ask that community buildings and local facilities are not damaged or spray-painted. These buildings are here for the community.’

It also said: ‘There are other ways we can come together to remember, pay tribute and show our support without damaging facilities that local people rely upon. Please respect our community spaces and the people who work hard to keep them running.’

The three teenagers died along with 23-year-olds Michael Robert Cahill and Jacob Matusiak when their Volkswagen Passat crashed on the A66 in the town on Saturday.

The five young men were pronounced dead at the scene at South Bank after hitting a marked police car, also killing PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.

Inquests will open at Teesside Magistrates’ Court today for all seven who died – with hearings for the officers in the morning and the five young men in the afternoon.

Police have arrested 17 people following the crash, charging two of them and bailing the others, as part of investigations into alleged organised crime.

The Passat had been pursued by police following an earlier incident in which a house in the Acklam area of Middlesbrough, linked to Worthy, was rammed by a vehicle.

The pursuit was aborted when the Passat went the wrong way down the A66.

Police have previously said the five men in the Passat may have had links to ‘serious and organised criminal activity’ and four of them have previous convictions.

PC Blades and PC Clough were not involved in the original pursuit but had been called to the area to assist with the search for the Passat.

An online appeal to raise money for the officers’ families passed £1million yesterday.

It comes as detectives continue to question two men, aged 23 and 31, who were arrested on suspicion of murder after the house fire in Grangetown – around a mile from the crash site – on Wednesday morning.

Cleveland Police would not rule out a link between the blaze at an end-of-terrace property in Grangetown and the crash at South Bank.

In addition to the two deaths from the fire, a 48-year-old woman remains in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Three other people suffered injuries which are believed to be non life-threatening.

The fire spread to around 12 acres of scrubland. A fire service spokesperson said: “At 3.38pm on Tuesday crews from Dogsthorpe, Yaxley, Stanground, Huntingdon, Chatteris, March, Gamlingay, St Neots and Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a fire in the open on Natures Way in Hampton.

“Firefighters worked hard using jets, hose reels and beaters to extinguish a fire affecting approximately 12 acres of scrubland. Crews returned to their stations by 10pm and have been returning to reinspect the area.”

The fire was deemed to be accidental. Natures Way was partially closed while the fire was dealt with.

Iconic Godmanchester bridge closing for repairs amid ‘concerns’

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

The specialist repairs will take around four weeks

A famous bridge will close for repairs amid concerns about its condition. Godmanchester’s Chinese Bridge is a Grade II listed building and landmark.

The pedestrian bridge spans a mill stream on the River Great Ouse., and its name comes from the style in which it was built. Concerns have been raised about the condition of the bridge, which is managed by Cambridgeshire County Council.

A spokesperson for the county council said: “We received reports of concern from the town council regarding the condition of a small section of the bridge deck and the parapet. Engineers at the council inspected the bridge on multiple occasions to run tests and a decision was made to re-deck the bridge.”

Re-decking works were due to begin in the week commencing Monday (August 24), depending on weather conditions. The bridge will remain open during this part of the work.

The original structure was built in 1827 but the wooden span later fell into a bad condition and was replaced with a replica by the local council in 1960. According to Cambridgeshire County Council, specialist heritage parapet repairs are expected to commence on October 5 and will take around four weeks to complete.

The spokesperson for the council added: “The specialist heritage parapet repairs are expected to commence on 5th October, under a 4 week footpath closure and subject to Environment Agency approval.”

A short pedestrian diversion will be in place through the car park to the north and the bridge is expected to reopen at the end of each working shift, according to Godmanchester Town Council.

Floods hit UK with lightning, hail and three inches of rain on the way as thunderstorm warnings are issued across England and Wales

A man in Birmingham wades through the water after Britain's second city was hit with flooding

Floods have battered parts of the UK as lightning and hail are expected across England and Wales.

West Midlands Fire Service confirmed it had been called out to ‘significant flooding’ in Birmingham after a flood warning was issued for Perry Barr due to rising river levels.

The fire service urged residents to avoid the area if possible as it also responded to three incidents in the suburb.

Birmingham City Council has warned locals to ‘take care’ and to ‘avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water’.

Images have emerged of flooded streets in England’s second city with people seen wading through water reaching above their knees.

One car was partly submerged with murky floodwater rising above its number plate.

It comes after an exceptionally hot and dry summer for the UK, which has seen three-quarters of England and all of Wales plunge into a drought as 28million people were hit with hosepipe bans.

Rivers and reservoirs are running low in some areas of the country after experiencing two months of no rain, with the latest bout of thundery weather set to bring more downpour than the last two months combined.

Floods often occur after a drought because parched soil repels the water instead of absorbing it.

Britons are set to be further hit with bouts of bad weather over the next couple of days, with two thunderstorm warnings issued for Thursday.

London and the South East of England experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms between 2am and 8am today, the Met Office said. Meanwhile, Wales and much of England will experience the downpour and storms from 5am until 10pm tonight.

It comes as the Environment Agency issued 22 flooding alerts across the Midlands and the South East.

Today some areas will see between 50-75mm (2 to 3in) of rainfall as well as lightning and hail. Warm temperatures with highs of 27C or 28C (82F) are also expected, the Met Office said.

In the South East, around 30 to 40mm (1 to 1.5in) of rainfall is anticipated, with ‘fairly large hail between 1-2cm’, the forecaster added.

However, parts of the larger warning area could have more than 75mm of rain in just 12 hours, Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said. Temperatures will drop closer to average for this time of year over the weekend, with highs of 25C (77F) on Friday, before lowering to 22C (72F) or 23C (73F) until Monday.

The forecaster has warned of travel disruption, with bus and train cancellations as well as some road closures due to flooding.

Some homes may experience damage and power cuts from quick flooding while some communities may be cut off entirely due to road closures.

Mr Snell said: ‘We’re watching the risk of some heavy rain and thunderstorms moving up from the south. On Thursday as we wake up there will be a band of potentially heavy rain and thundery rain stretching across parts of the UK.

‘For parts of the Midlands and Wales it’s going to be quite a wet day really. We could see some further thunderstorms move into the south east around Thursday evening.’

Friday will see further heavy rain and thunderstorms across the UK, before further rain moves in on Saturday. A mixture of sunshine and showers is expected this upcoming Sunday and Monday.

Mr Snell said: ‘To sum up the bank holiday weekend, it’s going to be pretty unsettled; there will be some sunny moments in between if you can dodge the downpours.

‘It’s not going to be a complete washout; if you’ve got outdoor plans over the weekend, keep a close eye as there will be rain moving in across most parts.’

It comes as the UK entered its final week of an exceptionally hot and dry summer, which has plunged nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales into drought, with 28million people under hosepipe bans.

Rivers and reservoirs are running low after some areas went two months without rain. Wisley in Surrey had 62 consecutive dry days until last week, while London Heathrow had 56 dry days.

Last month was the driest July on record for England, with the south-east left severely parched. Met Office data showed East Anglia had just 2mm (0.1in) of rainfall in July, and 56.3mm (2.2in) in June.

That means the rainfall forecast this week could be more than the past two months combined.

The Environment Agency said last Friday that south-east England had received just 3mm of rain so far in August – with rainfall totals for the month still below average across all regions of England, despite wetter weather in some areas.

The average rainfall for south-east England in August – using the Heathrow weather station as an example – is 53mm.

The Environment Agency added that seven reservoirs in England are now classed as having ‘exceptionally low’ storage levels, up from five a week ago.

Forecasters have also warned Britain faces more storms and rain this autumn and winter caused by an ‘unprecedented’ El Niño event.

El Niño is declared when sea temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific rise 0.5C above the long-term average, affecting global rainfall patterns and temperatures.

The natural warming of sea temperatures is forecast to reach more than 3C (37F) in the coming months, according to Met Office calculations – while other climate groups have projected something even stronger, perhaps even 4C above average.

The Met Office said this year’s event will be ‘the largest since the 19th century’ – with one expert even claiming it could be the strongest ‘in 500 or even 1,000 years’.

People missing in Nepal-China flooding are from over 30 countries

A glacier collapse in Tibet caused catastrophic flash flooding Wednesday in a border area of China and Nepal. Authorities in both countries have reported more than 160 deaths and over 1,300 people missing as of Thursday. Many were foreigners in the area for trekking or a pilgrimage to a sacred Hindu site.

The number of missing may vary across agencies due to differences in how they collected data, when it was reported and how it was verified, as well as gaps in coordination between those assembling data and those conducting rescue efforts in the affected area.

Nepal

Police reported at least 165 dead and 826 missing. Local reports cited the National Emergency Operation Center as saying Thursday the missing included 113 Nepali tourists, 85 security personnel from the army and police as well as 161 residents from the Rasuwa district and one from the Nuwakot district.

The National Tourism Board later Thursday said 517 foreigners were missing.
