Royal family news live: Earl Spencer accuses King of ‘gaslighting’ him after palace’s response to explosive book claims
Earl Spencer tears up when asked if he misses Diana as he doubles down on claims about King

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, should be given official security now because the media is treating them in a similar way to Princess Diana, Earl Spencer has said.

Diana died aged 36 in a 1997 Paris car crash as photographers pursued her on motorbikes, prompting questions around the media’s responsibility in her tragic death.

Harry and Meghan have returned to live in Britain six years after they quit royal duties and moved to the US.

“From a security aspect, as an uncle who’s seen his sister die in very, very preventable circumstances, I would veer towards protection,” Charles Spencer told the BBC.

He said the tabloid treatment of both Diana, and Harry and Meghan, could be “really, really unpleasant”, that it was “beholden on people” to learn from that experience.

It came as he struggled to hold back tears when asked how much he misses Princess Diana in a newly released TV interview.

Speaking to BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, he admitted he misses his sister “everyday,” adding: “That’s the thing with sibling loss, you never get over it.”

Diana said Mohamed Al Fayed ‘squeezed’ her buttocks, Earl Spencer claims

Princess Diana told her brother Earl Spencer that Mohamed Al Fayed had “dropped a hand onto her buttocks and squeezed them”, early in her romance with Dodi Fayed, according to reports.

The earl has made a series of damning claims about the King in a new memoir chronicling the Princess of Wales’ life that prompted the palace to push back, saying “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason”.

Earl Spencer said Diana “disliked” Al Fayed, the Mail Online reports.

It comes after a documentary exposing allegations of rape and sexual abuse against Al Fayed aired on the BBC two years ago.

SNL UK brutally mocks Ed Sheeran and King Charles in Diana sketch

After a week dominating the headlines, the royal war of words was the subject of comedy show SNL UK’s first sketch of the night on Saturday.

The sketch saw the cast bring back Princess Diana as an AI assistant for King Charles, mocking the monarch allegedly saying that she would be forgotten “soon enough” while arguing with Earl Charles Spencer over her funeral arrangements in 1997.

Spencer made the bombshell claim in an extract his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, with Buckingham Palace responding by saying that “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud, reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise”.

‘Often families have these quarrels’, says Ed Davey of royal dispute

Sir Ed Davey has said “often families have these quarrels, and often they go back to things that may or may not have been said decades ago”, in regards to Earl Spencer’s claims about the King.

On BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, the Liberal Democrats leader was asked if he would agree with Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch’s statement that she does not want to take a side but is “always on the side of His Majesty”.

Sir Ed said: “I’m a huge fan of His Majesty and of the royal family and that’s why I don’t really want to comment on what’s going on there.

“All I would say, I think people who will know from their own family experience, often families have these quarrels, and often they go back to things that may or may not have been said decades ago and it can be very painful.

“I just feel sorry for the royal family that this is being played out in public.”

Earl Spencer said allegations were his ‘duty as an eyewitness to history’

Earl Spencer felt it was his “duty… as an eyewitness to history” to write a new memoir chronicling the life of his sister, which has included a series of damning claims about the King.

It comes after the earl accused the King of gaslighting him after Buckingham Palace pushed back against explosive claims that Charles said “we’ll forget her soon enough” after Diana, Princess of Wales, died.

The earl has made a series of claims about the King in a new memoir chronicling the life of his sister Diana that prompted the response from Buckingham Palace, which said “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason”.

On his motivations for writing the book, the earl told the BBC it was his “duty… as an eyewitness to history”.

He said: “I’m aware of mortality and I wanted to just put things down once and for all that were true.

“This is not a threat, it’s a fact, I know lots of things about the King which I chose not to include in the book because they were not relevant.”

Labour minister says it is ‘not for politicians to opine on the royal family’

Bridget Phillipson said it was “not for politicians to opine on the royal family” after Kemi Badenoch said she was “always on the side of His Majesty”.

Asked whether she agreed with the Tory leader following explosive claims made in the memoir of Earl Spencer, the women and equalities minister told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: “My view is that the royal family don’t comment on politics, and I think it’s not for politicians to comment on what has or hasn’t happened within the royal family.

“Clearly, these are family matters, but actually, I don’t think as politicians we should be inserting ourselves into discussions about the royal family. They don’t do that to us, and I think we owe them that responsibility in return.”

Asked whether she agreed with Earl Spencer that there were echoes of how his sister was treated by the media in the way the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are, she said: “Again, sorry to repeat myself here, but I don’t think it’s the politicians to opine on the royal family, and I won’t be doing so.”

Earl Spencer ‘failing to protect nephews or Diana’s memory’, says royal commentator

A British royal commentator has accused Earl Spencer of failing to protect his nephews or the memory of his sister.

“In his 6 September 1997 eulogy in Westminster Abbey, Earl Spencer vowed to protect William and Harry,” journalist and radio commentator Dickie Arbiter said on X.

“His current allegations are hardly protecting his nephews nor protecting the memory of his sister 29 years after her tragic death,” he added.

Earl Spencer calls for Harry and Meghan to receive official security

Earl Spencer has said that Prince Harry and Meghan should be given official security, as they are now treated by the media much in the same way as his late sister was in the years leading up to her death.

Diana died aged 36 in a 1997 Paris car crash as photographers pursued her on motorbikes, sparking an outpouring of grief and a reckoning over whether the media bore some responsibility after it splashed details of her life across front pages for years.

Harry and Meghan have returned to live in Britain six years after they quit royal duties and moved to the US.

“From a security aspect, as an uncle who’s seen his sister die in very, very preventable circumstances, I would veer towards protection,” Charles Spencer told the BBC, citing Harry’s position as fifth-in-line to the British throne and as a former soldier.

Who is Earl Spencer – and why is his new book causing controversy?

Earl Spencer is the late Princess of Wales’ younger brother, and a British peer, author, journalist and broadcaster who succeeded his father as Viscount Althorp in 1992, aged just 27.

He is releasing a memoir titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, detailing his relationship and grief following Princess Diana’s 1997 death.

The book has sent shockwaves through the royal family after Earl Spencer claimed King Charles said “we’ll forget her soon enough” during a row about Diana’s funeral arrangements.

The allegations prompted Buckingham Palace to release an unprecedented statement, in which King Charles said he is “mindful” that grief can cloud reason and memory.

The book will be released on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho leads Real Madrid rant with printed images after derby defeat

Jose Mourinho produced printer out images of controversial incidents in a derby rant after Real Madrid fell to Atletico Madrid.

Mourinho hit out at the officials following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, claiming Diego Simeone’s side could have had two red cards in the first half.

The pressure increases on Mourinho, with the result following a 1-0 loss to Real Betis earlier in September to leave them six points off leaders Barcelona.

“We can skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here,” Mourinho said, while flagging the pieces of paper with the images and screenshots of the moments he was aggrieved by.

“Those were two clear red cards. Given the difficulties we faced afterwards playing 11 against 10, we can only imagine what 50 minutes of 11 against nine would have been like.

“So I’ll just have to limit myself to hugging my players, who gave it their all and played a first half, showed great class and character, setting us up perfectly to win the second half.”

Mourinho then added that he hoped the decisions were merely mistakes before praising his side’s cohesion.

“I want to believe they are simply mistakes, just as a coach makes mistakes, just as a player makes mistakes,” he said.

“I liked my team as a unit. Even in the first half I really liked them, and in the second half it was obviously very difficult to get the ball and to stop Atleti’s possession. I liked their pride, I liked their determination, and it’s a good feeling for me to not be disappointed in my players”.

Diego Simeone, in victory, refused to be drawn into a dispute with Mourinho, instead underlining a need for managers to be careful with their words.

“I understand that we’re in a privileged position with a lot of public scrutiny, as coaches, and whether it’s Mourinho, [Hansi] Flick, [Manuel] Pellegrini, me, or anyone else, we need to be careful about what we say,” he said.

“We have to know how to respect others, the referees, our colleagues and we all lose out. And when someone crosses that line of respect, it’s not right – you can’t cross that line.”

Trump Trying To End Iran War Without ‘Looking Like A Sucker’

Trump Trying To End Iran War Without 'Looking Like A Sucker'

Donald Trump is still desperately trying to end the Iran war without “looking like a sucker and a failure,” according to a former US ambassador.

Tensions across the Middle East have escalated over the weekend after Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen said they were behind missile attacks on Saudi Arabia.

There are fears about a potential Saudi retaliation, as Houthi and Saudi rivalries mount having imposed naval blockades on one another.

Middle Eastern countries have been fighting to find alternative routes for their oil exports after the US and Israel’s war with Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year.

Trump’s decision to initiate strikes against Iran in February has rocked the global economy for the last seven months.

America’s former envoy to the Middle East for humanitarian issues and previous ambassador to Turkey, David Satterfield, has now warned that Trump is still focused on trying to save his own skin.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the president is thinking: “How do I get out of this? How does this conflict end in a fashion that doesn’t leave me look like a loser, a sucker, a failure? How can I declare victory credibly enough and bring this to a close?”

He said he believes the president could keep the war going in a “stable-unstable” situation as it currently is while the economic sanctions continue to bite Iran – though that will make the war escalate, too.

He added that he hopes the president is being told the truth: that the Iranian regime was not close to toppling when the war began on February 28, nor is it close to doing so now.

Satterfield suggested the other option for Trump is to “declare victory and leave” while claiming to have ended the nuclear enrichment programme.

The ex-ambassador said Trump could then say the Strait of Hormuz was someone else’s problem.

“What will the president do? I don’t believe he knows,” he said.

The diplomat noted: “The Saudis may not be happy with this but at the end of the day they cannot turn for security to anyone but the United States.”

The BBC’s security correspondent Frank Gardner also told Today: “We don’t know, they don’t know, whether the Saudis are going to escalate this or not.”

He said the country is unable to get their oil out of the Strait of Hormuz, which “poses an existential threat to their economy and to the world economy”.

“The Saudis are looking around wondering where their friends are right now,” the journalist said.

“Because the Americans so far are not prepared to do the airstrikes and join in that the Saudis may be asking for.”

A third reviewer added: ” This is beautiful bedding and so soft. My hubby is so picky. It can’t be slippery, too heavy, or course fabric. He said the fitted sheet is the best we have ever had. I know this sounds like his review, but really, I agree. It washes up nicely and I only touch up the pillowcases. It was good value, not the most expensive and not the cheaper, coarse fabric.”

Some customers did dock points, with one noting: “They feel nice and wash well. We ordered the brown colour, and they look a bit more muted and grey then expected, but still nice.”

Another observed: “Lovely striped bedding, really soft material and washes well. The edging to the pillowcases is hard to keep up like the photos but generally looks really nice on the bed.”

The Yard Hebden Reversible 100% Cotton Duvet Cover & Pillowcase Set can be purchased from Dunelm.

The Good Morning Britain favourite has been with his rarely-seen partner for over two decades

Good Morning Britain star Richard Arnold has confirmed he’s married his partner.

The presenter originally shared the exciting news on the weekend, sharing a photo of him and his partner Stuart. And on Monday (September 21) Richard appeared on GMB where he opened up about his special day.

“I got spliced!” he told Kate Garraway and Ed Balls on the show. A photo of Richard and Stuart then popped up on the screen, in which Richard said: “That’s myself and my other half Stuart, and now my husband.”

Kate chimed in: “Awww, is that the first time you’ve said that?!” to which Richard said: “It is actually!” Richard then shared that he and Stuart – who have been together 21 years – tied the knot in Hackney Town Hall on Friday (September 18).

For the “low-key” wedding, the couple’s nearest and dearest made an appearance, including his sisters-in-law from Melbourne and Richard’s “besties from the 80s”.

Richard also revealed that the kilt he wore to his wedding was actually a prop from the GMB wardrobe. He said: “That all came from wardrobe. That’s how bad I am at organising these things!”

Kate was left floored at his wedding confession, saying: “What?! Our wardrobe here at Good Morning Britain, goodness me!” Richard said: “It was a prop!” After Richard thanked the GMB team and viewers for their support, Kate said: “Everybody is so thrilled.”

Richard usually keeps his private life out of the spotlight, but he and Stuart have been together since the early 2000s. In 2022, he offered an insight into their London home.

“Even though we live in central London and you hear the occasional siren, it really is an oasis. It’s extraordinarily quiet, really,” he told House Beautiful. And in 2020, Richard gave Stuart a romantic shout-out while on GMB, wishing him a “Happy anniversary” on air.

Meanwhile reacting to Richard’s wedding news, fans shared their support on Instagram.

GMB star Katy Rickitt said: “Congratulations this is beautiful.” Susanna Reid also penned: “THE BIGGEST BESTEST NEWS – massive congratulations and tons of love.”

Trump Sounds Eager To Escalate Iran War: ‘When Do I Blow The Entire Nation Up?’

Trump Sounds Eager To Escalate Iran War: 'When Do I Blow The Entire Nation Up?'

US President Donald Trump delivered another catastrophic warning to Iran this weekend, telling Fox News it’s only a matter of time until he’s ready to “blow the entire nation up.”

Trey Yingst, the network’s chief foreign correspondent, told Fox & Friends viewers he had just spoken with the president, who said he was in “deciding mode” and “very big things are going to be happening in the not-so-distant future.”

Trump reportedly laid out several paths he could take, saying he was choosing between “wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically or making a deal.”

Making escalation sound like an inevitable, Yingst said that Trump added, “My question is, if and when do I blow the entire nation up? They better behave.”

The president’s cataclysmic threat may not be a definite, as he is reportedly set to meet with a set of six Persian Gulf leaders while they are in the US for this week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York City. He also told Fox News he would be “open” to meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the summit.

Though Trump made it sound like he was at a critical crossroad in the war on Iran, he told Yingst the past few days were “no different from any other weekend.”

However, on Saturday, US embassies across the Middle East issued security alerts warning of “potential for unforeseen escalation” after the Iran-allied Houthi rebels intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Trump reportedly told Fox News he has been in “constant communication with the Houthis and that they’ve agreed not to fight the United States.”

Barclays to open new branches in UK as it gives major update

Published

on

Wales Online

Barclays has announced plans to open new bank branches

Barclays has issued a significant announcement on its plans for UK branches. The bank stated it “continues to strengthen its presence in communities across the UK, as it announces investment in branches around the country as part of a broader programme to modernise and evolve its physical network”.

New branches are set to open in Poole and Bishops Stortford this September, with additional openings scheduled before the year’s end, including one in Beverley during November. These relocations and refurbishments are taking place alongside the continued rollout of Premier Suites and the introduction of smart ATMs, the bank confirmed.

Barclays acknowledged that, while “customers increasingly choose digital banking for everyday transactions”, it recognises “that many of life’s most important financial decisions still benefit from expert guidance and face-to-face support”.

The bank explained that these latest developments have been “informed by customer demand and growth opportunities” and are “designed to bring together the best of both worlds: the convenience of digital and self-service banking, alongside access to expert colleagues when customers need it most”.

The new branches in Poole, Bishop’s Stortford and Beverley “reflect changing customer needs”, according to Barclays. In addition to self-service technology for routine transactions, they will feature consultation rooms, private meeting spaces and access to specialist support for customers requiring guidance on more complex banking needs or key life events.

Barclays also announced it had recently extended opening hours across its entire branch network, creating more than 60,000 additional hours of in-branch availability each year.

Vim Maru, chief executive of Barclays UK, said: “The opening of our new branches in Poole, Bishops Stortford, and Beverley is another demonstration of our commitment to investing in communities across the UK and ensuring customers can reach our people when it matters most.

“While customers increasingly choose digital banking for everyday transactions, we know that some of life’s most important financial decisions, whether buying a home, planning for retirement or investing for the future, benefit from a personal conversation with one of our colleagues.

“These new branches have been designed around those moments, providing customers with access to specialist support, alongside the convenience of self-service and digital banking.

“Our ambition is to give customers the best of both worlds: leading digital services for day-to-day banking and the expertise of our colleagues for more complex needs.

“By bringing these together, we’re creating a banking experience that offers greater choice, flexibility and confidence, however our customers choose to bank.”

Rande responded in the comments: ‘I am honored [to] take this ride called life with you over and over any time. Sometimes we may fall but with a little help always get back up. I love you forever Prez.’

Cindy also showed her support, commenting, ‘My boys!’

Presely later deleted the post. He previously explained how he frequently stepped back from his social media platforms or deleted content to focus on his well-being.

‘Thank you for being a role model. You are one of my greatest inspirations. From relationships to work you have taught me so much. I am grateful for you every day. I have infinite love for you.’

A flood dose is a single, high-dose administration of a substance – most commonly ibogaine, a psychoactive compound derived from plants and used in specialised addiction clinics. The high-dose is designed to induce a profound psychoactive and physiological ‘reset’.

Ibogaine is illegal in the US, where it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance but it is Iegal or permitted by prescription in countries like Canada and Brazil.

Presley captioned the video: ‘Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose – quiet moment before everything changed. i was absolutely terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this (helps to not go into the situations you do that get ya there but that’s life sometimes.)’

‘(my mantras were love yourself and lis gotta be the last time for this reason. letting go of control didn’t come easy, but I trusted there was something bigger than me guiding it.’

‘I knew why i was there. I faced what I had been running from, and somewhere in all of it, i started finding my way back to myself…. We shall see…. Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.’

‘Next time I’d like to choose And absolutely can’t forget the incredible caring kind and on their sh*t team. Helps a lot haha. And I made some dope ass friends there  #iboga #ibogaine #rewireyourbrain #loveyourself #mentalhealth.’

Presley’s family shared their support on the post, with Cindy writing in the comments: ‘You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!’

His sister Kaia added: ‘that’s my brother I am so damn proud’ whilst Rande wrote: ‘I’m so proud of you and your courage. Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.’

Four months before his passing, Presely had supported his sibling at the RE/DONE x Kaia Gerber Short/Cuts Launch event in May in L.A.

His parents had also made an appearance as the family paused for photos together outside.

Last month, Presley’s sister Kaia revealed how his drug use and mental health struggles had affected their family.

‘When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,’ she told Vogue.

Last November, Presley revealed he had taken a step back from social media to ‘take care of my own mental health for a bit.’

One month later, he opened up about his personal life in a candid social media video.

Sister, Kaia, said her brother’s troubles made her want to be the ‘easy’ child.

She explained, ‘I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.’

He listed medication he takes for ‘night terrors’ and ‘panic attacks.’

‘I feel like honesty is the best policy,’ he began before sharing that he was on 1mg of Buprenorphine, used to treat both pain and opioid use disorders, twice a day.

Presley also shared that the ‘benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life.’

Benzodiazepines help ‘slow down activity in your brain and nervous system’ to treat ‘anxiety and related mental health conditions,’ per Cleveland Clinic.

‘Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,’ he shared.

He did not go into detail about the ‘loss’ he referenced, but went on to explain that he also takes a dose of Xanax at night or when his ‘panic attacks are really, really bad.’

The model then listed Valium, admitting that he didn’t know exactly how much he’d been taking as he said, ‘Who f***ing knows anymore.’

He noted in the Instagram reel that ‘doctors say a lot of different things so it’s kind of scary. But hopefully between my research and their research and the world and God, we can finally figure this out.’

Presley also talked about the lack of ‘direction’ he has from doctors when it comes to his medication.

‘I’d like doctors to be like, “Take this three times a day.” But every psychiatrist I’ve had – and I’ve had 15 – are like, “Here’s 20 medications and take this if you feel like this, take this as needed.”

‘And I’m like, “No, don’t give me that much leeway.” I need some direction,’ he continued.

Kaia, told Vogue that witnessing her brother’s honesty was ‘refreshing.’

‘My parents for most of our lives were very, very private and didn’t share anything – and now we have this absolute teacher, my brother, who says, “I’m gonna be very human for everyone.” There’s only so much you can hide from the world,’ she said.

‘And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them.’

Drivers face one hour diversion during North Yorkshire road closure

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that Ravenseat to Keld, will be closed from Monday, September 28, until Friday, November 6.

The closure is required for work at Beck Meetings Bridge, where the existing three-span stone clapper structure is set to be replaced.

Roadworks information published for the scheme shows a signed diversion of around 60.88km, or almost 38 miles, which is expected to take motorists about an hour to complete.

The bridge carries the B6270 over the Crooked Sike watercourse.

According to information for road users, the work will involve the “replacement of a 3-span stone clapper with a precast concrete u-duct and concrete top slab”.

The diversion will be in force throughout the closure period.

The lengthy alternative route takes motorists away from the affected stretch before eventually bringing them back towards their original route, with part of the diversion travelling towards Cliff Gate Road.

The reverse route will apply for traffic travelling in the opposite direction.

A North Yorkshire Council traffic order states: “North Yorkshire Council intends to make this Order to prohibit any vehicle from using Ravenseat To Boundary, Keld due to necessary bridge repair works.

“It is envisaged that the restriction will be in force from September 28, 2026 until November 6, 2026.”

Although the legal traffic order allows for a maximum duration extending until 20 March, 2028, this does not mean the road is expected to remain closed for that length of time.

The council says the restriction will only apply when traffic signs are in place, with a local alternative route also signed where appropriate.

Motorists travelling through the area are being advised to follow diversion signs and allow additional time for their journeys.
