Suffolk brewery Adnams suffers a fall in sales after offloading some of its pubs

Adnams suffered a fall in sales after offloading some of its pubs earlier this year

Brewer and hospitality firm Adnams saw sales slow in the first half after it put some of its pubs up for sale amid ‘continued pressure’ on consumer spending.

The Ghost Ship brewer said trading in its managed pubs and hotels was below expectations, with group revenue falling 8.9 per cent to £27.4million for the six months to the end of June.

It followed the disposal of some of its tenanted pubs last year as it battled ‘extremely challenging market conditions’.

The 154-year-old Suffolk brewery has come under pressure in recent years, even reportedly considering an outright sale of the business in 2024.

Adnams suffered a fall in sales after offloading some of its pubs earlier this year

An onslaught of higher costs, including higher National Insurance contributions and the minimum wage, has thwarted its turnaround efforts. The brewer ended 2025 with debts of £9.2million, down from £15.3million, but revenue was £4.3million lower than in 2024.

Chair Simon Townsend today said the business was ‘resilient despite continued pressure on consumer spending and subdued trading conditions’.

It said it cut operating expenses by over £2million in the period, which it said helped to mitigate some of the impact on overall profitability.

Adnams reported a pre-tax loss of £1.42million in the first half, compared to £1.47million in the previous year.

Pub and hotel sales started to pick up over the summer thanks to the warmer weather and World Cup, with like-for-like sales growth of 3.3 per cent in July, while profits climbed 10 per cent.

Direct-to-consumer sales proved more robust in the first half with trading in supermarkets continuing to outperform the wider beer market, as it piles money into its Ghost Ship brands.

The company added: ‘Adnams today is a more focused business than it was two years ago.

‘Whilst there remains much work to do, the board believes the actions being taken are the right ones to create a more resilient, profitable and sustainable business over the long term.’

Maura Higgins arrives at Dancing With The Stars rehearsals as angry co-stars say show is ‘fixed for her to win’ after she was paired with pal Mark Ballas and seen out with judge Bruno Tonioli

Maura Higgins arrived at Dancing With The Stars rehearsals as her co-stars say show is 'fixed for her to win’ after she was paired with pal Mark Ballas

Maura Higgins looked ready to get stuck in as she arrived at the Dancing With The Stars rehearsals on Thursday after it was reported she is embroiled in a ‘fix row’ with her co-stars.

The 35-year-old Love Island star built her US fame by hosting an American spin-off of the dating series and finishing as runner-up on The Traitors US.

Now she’ll be waltzing her way on to American TV screens once again – while partnered with none other than Strictly judge Shirley Ballas‘s son Mark.

Yet Maura’s appearance on the show has already ruffled some feathers before the competition has even started.

After her pairing with Mark was revealed and the star being seen rubbing shoulders with judge Bruno Tonioli on a night out, her co-stars are allegedly not best pleased.

A source revealed: ‘Maura’s been rubbing everyone up the wrong way, even before their first spray tans have dried.

‘She was desperate to be partnered with Mark, who’s hugely popular, and was dead against Gleb, who’s now out of a job. It’s as if what Maura says goes.’

They told The Sun: ‘She’s even made sure to get close to judge Bruno Tonioli and wasted no time posing arm-in-arm with him after a night out.

‘It’s not gone unnoticed within the cast that she’s being favoured. It’s as if she’s being set up to win.’ The Daily Mail has contacted Maura’s representatives for comment.

Maura appeared to have already grown close to judge Bruno, as they linked arms on a night out together on Tuesday evening.

And Maura and Mark already know each other after they both appeared on the US Traitors earlier this year and are now set to embark on a new challenge together.

Their pairing comes after Maura was very vocal about a particular professional dancer she did not want to be partnered with.

She sparked controversy after she said she didn’t want to face the Russian professional dancer Gleb Savchenko because she doesn’t agree with the ‘way he talks about women’.

She said she will be remaining fiercely ‘loyal’ to her best pal and former DWTS contestant Brooks Nader, who dated Gleb.

Gleb has since responded to Maura explaining he has ‘never heard’ of the star and insisted he will not ‘lose any sleep over the opinion of someone I’ve never met’.

In a statement to the Daily Mail he said: ‘Until I was asked to comment on this story, I’d genuinely never heard of this girl, Maura, so I’m certainly not going to lose any sleep over the opinions of someone I’ve never met.

‘It’s odd to publicly attack someone you’ve never even met, but if that’s how she wants to make headlines before the show starts, that’s her choice.

‘I’ll stay focused and leave the unnecessary drama to everyone else.’

Gleb and Brooks endured a ‘messy’ split after they sparked a romance during their time partnered on the show in 2024.

Maura told E! News: ‘I’d be happy with anyone but Gleb. That’s only because I’m loyal and I’m friends with Brooks [Nader].’

She added: ‘I don’t really like the way he speaks about women. I don’t really want to spend all my time with someone like that. I’m like, no thank you.’

Meanwhile Maura’s career in the US has continued to soar after she landed her biggest TV job to date after being confirmed as the host of the hotly anticipated Blind Date reboot.

The star has been hailed the ‘perfect match’ as she prepares to step into the late Cilla Black’s shoes ahead of the iconic dating show’s upcoming return to screens next year.

After attempting to find romance on ITV dating show Love Island in 2019, Maura went on to bag a hosting role on Love Island US: Aftersun and also starred on The Traitors US.

The Irish TV personality is set to continue her US takeover on DWTS, before filming the Blind Date reboot in a secret location later this year.

Angela Jain, head of content at Disney+ EMEA, said in a statement: ‘Maura is the perfect match for our version of Blind Date.

‘Her distinctive straight-talking humour, coupled with her experience as a reality dating show contestant, means we know she has the gravitas plus the wit to bring Blind Date to new audiences.

‘We’re very much looking forward to Maura helping our daters navigate their own journeys to find love as she steps into the famed Blind Date host role.’

The boy, a passenger in the car, was declared dead at the scene, while the driver was rushed to hospital

A young boy died last night following a collision involving a train and a car.

Shortly after 8.45pm on Thursday night in Ireland, Gardai and emergency services responded to reports of a collision at a level crossing in Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis in Mayo.

Upon arrival at the scene a passenger in the car, a 12-year-old boy, was pronounced deceased by emergency services personnel. The driver of the car, who is a male in his late 40s, was transported to hospital by ambulance to receive treatment for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening, reports the Irish Mirror.

Gardai this morning confirmed the news, with significant disruption expected on the line and the road remains closed this morning.

A technical examination of the scene is set to be conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The local coroner has been notified and the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

All passengers on the train safely disembarked and alternative transport was provided.

Gardai have now issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the area around the time of the collision, to make contact with authorities.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told the Irish Mirror: “Road users and pedestrians with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were in the area of Kiltybo, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, on Thursday 3rd September 2026 between 8.15pm and 9.15pm are asked to make this footage available toinvestigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballina Garda Station on (096) 20560, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”

The incident resulted in “significant disruption” to the line between Westport and Athlone.

The collision was the second disruption on the Westport to Dublin line on Thursday.

Bus transfers were arranged for passengers when a train struck a tractor at a level crossing between Portarlington and Tullamore. A man was taken to hospital following that incident.

In a post on social media platform X before the death was announced, Irish Rail said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today’s incidents. We’ll continue to do our best to provide clear and timely updates as info becomes available.

“A sincere thank you to all passengers/staff for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging day.”

Replacement bus transfers were operating from Westport to Athlone on Friday morning, with Ballina to Manulla services running through to Claremorris.

The line between Westport and Athlone is to remain closed “until further notice”.

More than 1M pensioners now in top tax brackets – and stealth tax will drag more into 40% rates

Published

on

Income tax: Freeze on thresholds has been in place for five years and is set to last until 2031

More than a million pensioners are now paying top rates of income tax, new official figures reveal.

The number liable for 40 per cent higher rate tax has doubled to 977,000 over the past five years, while those paying the 45 per cent additional rate has trebled to 115,000 in the current tax year

The new breakdown by tax bracket also shows the number of pensioners paying 20 per cent basic rate tax has risen by a third to 8.48million over this period.

The new HMRC figures, obtained under a freedom of information request by former Pensions Minister Steve Webb, follow a freeze on thresholds which is set to last until 2031 and is set to accelerate the trend.

Webb, a partner at pension consultant LCP, says there were also significant inflation-linked increases to state pensions and other pensions over the past five years.

He notes that during this time the income tax personal allowance has been frozen at £12,570 and the starting rate of higher rate income tax has been frozen at £50,270.

The threshold for the additional 45 per cent tax rate was first frozen at £150,000 and then cut to £125,140 from 2023-24 onwards.

Income tax: Freeze on thresholds has been in place for five years and is set to last until 2031

Altogether, more than ten million pensioners are now paying income tax, setting a new record since thresholds were frozen, according to official figures released in July.

‘Many people of working age may have expected that they would be basic rate taxpayers in retirement, but few will have expected to find themselves paying 40 per cent or more out of their pensions in tax,’ says Webb.

‘But this is the norm now for over a million pensioners, with the number set to rise further.

‘Those who are planning their retirement finances will increasingly need to allow for the fact that a significant chunk of the income they had planned to live on will be taxed at 40 per cent or more, and for some that means more pension saving will be needed today to compensate.’

How much do you need for a comfortable retirement

A single person should aim for an income of £32,700 a year and a couple £45,400 for a decent retirement, according to a widely used pension industry benchmark from trade group Pensions UK.

This ‘moderate’ lifestyle covers the essentials plus some splashing out on food and entertainment, trips abroad and running a car.

If you aspire to an affluent retirement, including long weekends away in the UK as well as overseas holidays, and more spending on eating out and social activities, Pensions UK suggests a single person targets a £45,400 income and a couple £62,700.

For a more frugal retirement, covering essential bills plus a few treats, it estimates a single person needs £13,900 a year and a couple £22,500.

These targets assume you will qualify for a full state pension, currently around £12,500 a year.

They don’t account for income tax, housing costs if you are still paying a mortgage or rent, or care costs in later life.

Meanwhile, people in their 30s and 40s looking at present-day forecasts for retirement income need to factor in inflation and aim their sights far higher, warns financial advice platform Unbiased.

A single person needs to target £74,000 a year for a comfortable retirement in 20 years’ time, rather than the £45,400 industry estimate.

And a couple will need nearly £103,000 rather than the current £62,700 a year, warns financial advice platform Unbiased.

What if your pension is falling short

If you are worried about whether you will have saved enough, investigate your existing pensions. Broadly speaking, you need to ask schemes the following questions.

– The current fund value.

– The current transfer value – because there might be a penalty to move.

– Whether the pension is in a final salary or defined contribution scheme. Defined contribution pensions take contributions from both employer and employee and invest them to provide a pot of money at retirement.

Non-public sector employers have now mostly replaced more generous gold-plated defined benefit – career average or final salary – pensions, which provide a guaranteed income after retirement until you die.

Defined contribution pensions are stingier and savers bear the investment risk, rather than employers.

– If there are any guarantees – for instance, a guaranteed annuity rate – and if you would lose them if you moved the fund.

– The pension projection at retirement age. You can use a pension calculator to see if you will have enough – these are widely available online.

You should add the forecast figures to what you anticipate getting in state pension, which is currently £241.30 a week or nearly £12,550 a year if you qualify for the full new rate. Get a state pension forecast here.

Consider whether you can afford to pay more into your pension, especially if your employer matches higher contributions, or if you receive bonuses and pay rises.

If you are tempted to merge your old pensions, read our guide first to ensure you won’t be penalised.

If you have lost track of old pots, the Government’s free pension tracing service is here.

Take care if you do an online search for the Pension Tracing Service as many companies using similar names will pop up in the results.

These will also offer to look for your pension, but try to charge or flog you other services, and could be fraudulent.

Nigel Farage latest: Reform leader breaks silence on donation claims as party’s conference overshadowed by sting

Nigel Farage latest: Reform leader breaks silence on donation claims as party’s conference overshadowed by sting

Farage said lunch meeting has ‘nothing to do with’ Reform UK

Questioned about a lunch he took part in with undercover reporters alongside Dan Jukes in Clacton, Nigel Farage said the meeting has “nothing to do with” Reform UK.

He told LBC: “If you listen to what I said, I said, is this all above board? Is this all legal? I’ve been told it was a global family office based in London. And by the way, I was in the middle of a Clacton by-election. I turned up to see people. I knew nothing about them whatsoever. I meet people all the time.”

A report broadcast by Channel 4 News claimed Reform took funding from a US firm for three polls it commissioned earlier this year costing £32,500, leading to allegations the party breached donation rules.

But Mr Farage said the polls in question were commissioned by an independent third party.

He added: “Whilst the poll benefited Reform, it wasn’t commissioned by Reform.

“It had nothing to do with Reform. It was an independent third party that did it. So that’s nothing. That’s nothing. Polls are funded by overseas people every single week. Every single week.”

BREAKING: Farage says Reform has done nothing wrong

Nigel Farage said Reform has done “nothing wrong” following allegations they breached political donation rules by having polling paid for by an overseas company.

The party leader told LBC everything was “above board”, adding that there was “nothing illegal”, insisting that “no illegal transaction occurred”.

The Reform leader said the two men had to resign because they became ‘entrapped’, but said the conversations “don’t look good”.

The Clacton MP added: “There’s nothing illegal in that whatsoever… Polling can be paid for by anybody provided it is put into the public domain.”

Labour and Lib Dems have reported Reform to the police

Rival parties had reported Reform to the police over claims by Channel 4 News that Reform took funding from a US firm for three polls it commissioned earlier this year, costing £32,500.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats have reported the party to the police over the allegations.

A Reform UK spokesman said: “Reform UK has launched an investigation following the broadcast of a Channel 4 News programme.

“Both individuals involved have stepped down from their respective positions pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The party believes it is important that the investigation is allowed to proceed independently and without prejudice. No further comment will be made while the investigation is ongoing.”

It comes as Reform is gathering its members in Birmingham for the party’s annual conference, with Nigel Farage set to deliver his leader’s speech.

He later added that “no benefit in kind was received”.

Tice refuses to rule out Jukes and Orr returning in split from Anderson

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice did not rule out Dan Jukes and James Orr returning to the party, after chair Lee Anderson told Sky News there was “no chance” of them doing so.

Mr Orr and Mr Jukes have stepped down and the party has launched an investigation following allegations they breached political donation rules by having polling paid for by an overseas company.

Rival parties had reported Reform to the police over claims by Channel 4 News that Reform took funding from a US firm for three polls it commissioned earlier this year, costing £32,500.

When asked if Mr Orr and Mr Jukes could return, Mr Tice told BBC Radio 4 “let’s wait and see what the investigation says, that will take its course”.

‘There’s a pattern of behaviour we’re seeing with Reform UK’, education secretary says

Education secretary Lucy Powell said the positions of two Reform UK officials who stepped down as the party launched an investigation following allegations they breached political donation rules by having polling paid for by an overseas company were “untenable”.

James Orr and Dan Jukes have stepped down from Reform, a party spokesperson said.

Rival parties had reported the party to the police over claims by Channel 4 News that Reform took funding from a US firm for three polls it commissioned earlier this year, costing £32,500.

Ms Powell told BBC Breakfast: “I think their (Mr Orr and Mr Jukes) positions were pretty untenable after the footage thatI saw involving them.

“But we (the Labour Party) have referred this matter to the police as well, because we think that from what we’ve seen in this package from Channel 4, that this is a clear breach of electoral law.”

The Manchester Central MP said it was “part of a pattern” now seen with Reform.

She added: “They’re already under investigation for a very similar allegation of electoral law breach, of somebody else giving money on behalf of somebody else to avoid that scrutiny, which is against the law.

“And Nigel Farage himself is also under investigation from the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for accepting a donation of £5m which he didn’t declare.

“So, I think there’s a pattern of behaviour we’re seeing with Reform UK really thinking that these rules just don’t apply to them.”

Mabel’s London guide: Favorite West London hangouts, vintage shopping, and hidden hammams

West London. My mum [the singer Neneh Cherry] moved just off All Saints Road when she was about 14 with Andi Oliver and lots of very cool people, and I’ve lived here pretty much forever. I live with my husband and Italian greyhounds Imani and Tahini. My extended family have a few houses on the street so we have a communal living situation.

Where do you stay in London?

My house is kind of like a hotel — it’s always been the place everyone comes to have dinner or to stay. Everyone calls me like, “Do you have any more rooms free or anywhere I can stay?” I make a great lasagne for them too.

What are your favourite restaurants?

There’s a great place on Portobello Road called Portobello Garden — it’s an Italian restaurant that my husband and I go to all the time. It’s simple, romantic and run by a great family. I also love Tiella Trattoria by Columbia Road. The chef is Dara Klein, who makes seasonal food that changes all the time.

Which shops do you rely on?

I love Rellik and One of a Kind for the best designer vintage clothes you’ll find in London. I got one of my wedding dresses in One of a Kind. Then there’s a cute coffee shop on Willesden High Street called Axis, which does matcha flavours like salted date. I love being close to Westfield too for my Space NK bits.

When I’d just turned 18 and was trying to figure out my own music and writing for myself, I did a lot of fashion assisting and was a runner on a lot of shoots. It made me realise that fashion is actually a lot more cut-throat than music, but it also put me around a lot of creatives who were in the music business. I realised that I wanted to be part of that visual world but not have fashion be my only thing.

Where would you recommend for a first date?

Probably The Tabernacle. They do nights on the first Friday of every month, and we go a lot as a family. My parents always go there for date night — it’s really cute. So I’ll go with my husband or my sister or whoever and they’ll be on their date night just having a dance.

What would you do if you were mayor for the day?

There’s a lot I would like to do. I’m passionate about venues and a lot of them are either dying or dead. I often think for a young up-and-coming artist it’s so difficult now. I’d assemble a board of geniuses to work out how we put them back together. How are you supposed to get good if you can’t play all the time?

Who is the most iconic Londoner in history?

Ian Wright. I’ve seen him in his car blasting music a few times. And I’ve seen him at Carnival with his kids just having a great time. He’s a sweet, beautiful soul.

Where do you go and what do you do to have fun?

I’m always down for an amusement park like Thorpe Park — it’s my favourite. There’s no ride I won’t go on. The dream would be to shut it down and have no queues. I might not even invite anyone and just go on my own.

What’s the best thing a cabbie has ever said to you?

Nine times out of 10, if I’m with my mum, London cabbies always recognise her. They’ll be so gassed to meet her and it’s the most wholesome thing.

Who do you call when you want to have fun?

Probably my friend Maxi Millz. He throws events called kinin tonights with really good DJs. Then Selassie TBC — he’s pretty much always DJing somewhere cool.

What’s your biggest extravagance?

Diptyque candles and piercings at Maria Tash.

What’s your London secret?

There’s a great hammam near Charing Cross called Aire. And then Crème Cookies but I don’t know if that’s a secret anymore.

What are you up to at the moment for work?

I just shot a campaign with Crocs. Then I’ve been spending a lot of time working on new music and going to my grandma’s house in Sweden and bringing creatives there to work.

I love vintage T-shirts. I have a vintage Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt and if anyone took it from my wardrobe I would hunt them down. I have loads of fun old Batman ones too.

Chris Martin. I’ve been to every Coldplay show. It’s just great pop music — great writing — and the shows are always big and epic.

Middlesbrough on lockdown for A66 crash funeral: Headteachers accused of ‘giving in to thugs’ as schools close early over concerns of violence and clashes with police

Published

on

It is understood today's funeral is for Jakub Matusiak, 23, one of the young men in the Volkswagen Passat which crashed into a police car on the A66 last month

Four schools in Middlesbrough closing early before the funeral of one of the men killed in the A66 crash have been accused of giving in to ‘thugs’.

The schools will send children home at lunchtime in a decision the Shadow Education Secretary said was ‘wrong’.

Laura Trott, who retained her brief in Kemi Badenoch‘s Conservative frontbench reshuffle, said the Government should ensure ‘criminal gangs don’t get their way’.

Two police officers and five young men were killed on August 22 when a Volkswagen Passat, which had been chased by police, hit a marked armed response car while driving the wrong way down the A66 dual carriageway.

PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died in the crash, as did Jakub Matusiak, 23, Cole Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and Michael Cahill, 23.

Four of the young men in the vehicle had criminal convictions, including for assaulting a police officer and vehicle offences.

It is understood today’s funeral is Matusiak’s, with crowds, motorbikes and quad bikes expected to gather in Normanby Road in the South Bank area of the town.

The service is due to be held at the St John the Evangelist Church in South Bank – where a silent prayer vigil was also held for PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough last month.

At a ‘memorial’ for Matusiak last month, close to the crash site in South Bank, orange balloons were released, fireworks set off and balaclava-clad bikers intimidated residents.

South Bank primary school will close at 12pm ‘to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our pupils,’ it said.

Headteacher Tammy Cooper said in a Facebook statement that the school expected ‘large numbers of people in the area which will inevitably cause congestion and transport disruption’.

She said: ‘This decision has been reached after careful consideration of the potential impact on the departure of pupils, staff and families.

‘We recognise the inconvenience this may cause and thank our families for their understanding and co-operation.’

Ms Cooper said the school also recognises ‘some pupils may feel upset or anxious about the funeral taking place locally’ and the pastoral team would be available for support.

And Mark Robinson, head of Outwood academy in Normanby, said in a letter to parents that his school would also close at midday after discussions with the council.

Archway Academy Teesville and St Margaret Clitherow’s Catholic Primary School will also close early. Mackenzie Thorpe Centre will be closed all day.

Last week a vigil for Cahill was criticised by MPs and police after a crowd set fire to cars in Haswell, County Durham.

A spokesman for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council said: ‘Following discussions between local headteachers and the local authority, a number of schools in the South Bank area will close earlier than usual on Friday afternoon due to anticipated traffic congestion and transport disruption associated with a local funeral taking place in the area.

‘The decision was made after careful consideration of the potential impact on home-to-school transport and the departure of pupils, staff and families at the end of the school day.

‘Schools have worked with the local authority and transport providers to consider arrangements for pupils, including those who travel to and from specialist educational settings.

‘We recognise that early closure may cause inconvenience for some parents and carers, and we thank them for their understanding and co-operation.’

But Ms Trott urged Education Secretary Lucy Powell to intervene, telling the Labour minister she had a ‘duty to ensure that this does not impact on the honest and decent pupils, parents and teachers in the area’.

She added: ‘Children should not be kept out of school because of the behaviour of thugs on the streets.’

‘If schools are closing because of concerns about disorder, intimidation or criminality in the surrounding area, then those responsible should be held to account by law.’

‘Intimidation must never be tolerated. No child should lose out on their education because criminal gangs have brought fear and lawlessness to their community.’

The Education Secretary responded saying she trusted headteachers to ‘make judgments that they need to make to keep their school community safe’.

Lucy Powell told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘As Education Secretary, I want schools to be open. I want pupils attending schools all the time.

‘And these headteachers of these small number of schools have taken a very difficult decision with the local authority and the police for the safety of their school community to close early.

‘What I would say is that there are huge anxieties and worries in the communities.’

She added: ‘I trust headteachers to make the judgments that they need to make to keep their school community safe. I hope this doesn’t have to happen again.’

And Ms Powell said it was not a time for ‘party political point scoring’.

‘This is a very, very difficult and delicate situation, as you say, and I will always put the safety and wellbeing of children at the forefront of anything I do,’ she said.

Min Aung Hlaing visiting Vietnam as he steps up ASEAN diplomacy

BANGKOK (AP) — The leader of Myanmar’s military-backed government is visiting Vietnam for talks with its leaders in his latest effort to normalize relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and attract foreign investment.

Min Aung Hlaing has stepped up diplomatic engagements since he was sworn in as president in April following an election that critics say was designed to cement the military’s hold on power.

Since taking office, he has traveled to India, China, Laos, Thailand and most recently Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia, where he met with leaders and sought to draw foreign investment through business forums.

Vietnam has maintained longstanding military ties with Myanmar, including defense cooperation and the involvement of Viettel, Vietnam’s military-run telecommunications group, in Mytel, one of Myanmar’s major telecom operators, which has military-linked ownership.

Economic ties, however, have weakened, with bilateral trade falling from $853 million in 2020 to $590 million in 2025 and $335 million in the first half of 2026, figures Min Aung Hlaing shared with Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung when they met in Myanmar in late August, according to Vietnam’s foreign ministry.

State-run MRTV television said Min Aung Hlaing departed on a flight from the capital, Naypyitaw, Friday morning.

In Hanoi, Min Aung Hlaing is expected to meet Vietnamese President To Lam and other senior officials and attend a business forum with members of his Cabinet.

The diplomatic outreach is the latest in a series of moves to reengage with countries in the region and the international community after relations became frayed or frosty following Min Aung Hlaing’s ousting of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in February 2021 while serving as army chief.

Friday’s visit marks Min Aung Hlaing’s third visit to an ASEAN member state as he seeks to restore his standing within the 11-member bloc, of which Myanmar and Vietnam are members.

He faced years of diplomatic isolation following his 2021 takeover and was barred from top-level ASEAN meetings for failing to comply with a peace plan agreed upon in April 2021.

Western governments have shunned and sanctioned Min Aung Hlaing and his associates for overthrowing Suu Kyi’s government. Subsequent serious rights violations followed a deadly military crackdown on protests, which subsequently triggered a nationwide armed resistance movement and a bloody civil war.
