One resident said they feel ‘reassured’ living there

Residents living in a housing estate in the shadow of one of Cambridgeshire ’s busiest hospitals have said they feel “reassured by the fact that they are “minutes away from expert help”. Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge is positioned with hundreds of houses nearby.

Outsiders may have thought those living in the shadow of the huge site might regularly experience street parking and hear constant sirens as ambulances take patients to the hospital. But for some of those living in the area, it seems to be a different experience.

Bernie Constable has been a resident in Cambridge for 59 years. Speaking about why she likes living in the area, she said: “I think what happens when you’re older and I know that my dad feels this, is that you feel reassured by the fact that you’re minutes away from expert help.”

The 62-year-old said that living close by is “brilliant”. She would “really like” to live in the countryside but said: “Something that actually stops me is knowing I’m getting older and I’ve got that on my doorstep.”

She said doesn’t see anything negative about living close to the hospital, adding: “If things happen in terms of lots of ambulances we have to tolerate it. I just think we’re very lucky especially for the elderly who don’t have to go far and that does make a big difference.”

The hospital is part of Cambridge University Hospital Trust which serves thousands of patients each day. Trumpington and Queen Edith’s are two of the primary residential areas located near Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Katrina who lives in the area said that the “interruption” caused “is absolutely mediated” as ambulances “dim the sound and only leave the lights” when they pass through the area. She said ambulances come in and out “quite frequently” but highlighted this is increased by a care home at the end of her street. The 40-year-old said the advantages “definitely” outweigh the negatives.

A 91-year-old woman who didn’t want to be named said it’s a “nice community” and “everybody seems to get on”. She said there’s “everything” in the area that she needs.

Retired Abdeslam Tahaikt, who “spent most of his life in the hospital” working said if he ever needed anything it is “no problem” for him being so close. He said ambulances pass by the area “many times” but he said he is used to it. Talking about himself personally, he said having an easily accessed hospital is “better” for him adding that “even the shops are not far from me”.

A 60-year-old resident, who wished not to be named said: “I haven’t got massive buildings right outside my door so I don’t see it . I think it’s always good to know there’s a really good hospital close by. I am 60-years-old so I have had three appointments in the last month and a half and it’s been really nice just to bike there.”

She said it’s “just a short bus ride, or bike ride or even walk or drive to the hospital.” “If time is of the essence”, then living so close to the hospital could save someone’s life, she explained.

Harry Styles has sparked speculation he’s set to headline Glastonbury next year after leaving a major gap in his tour schedule.

As the full list of cities was revealed, it hinted at a key opportunity for the singer to perform at the iconic Somerset festival, which takes place between June 23-27.

The tour will begin on Friday, April 2 and he will play new venues in the United States and Canada with back-to-back shows at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, AZ, before continuing to Dallas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta and Chicago till the end of May.

Tellingly, there’s a space of almost a month before Harry takes to the stage in Berlin at the beginning of July, giving him plenty of time to prepare for a gig on the famous Pyramid stage. 

Amid the news, some excited fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts that the star is set to take to the stage at Worthy Farm.

After his US dates,  Harry will then head to Europe for performances in Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Dublin before returning home to London for three shows at Wembley Stadium.

The general sale for London will take place from 11am on September 17, while the sale for tickets in the US will take place on September 16 at 9am local time. Presales and on sale timing varies per market.

Each city on the extended run will feature a different very special guest, including Tinashe, CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, Kylie Minogue, Lainey Wilson and Q Marsden.

Other support acts will include The Womack Sisters, Getdown Services, Caroline Polachek, Feist, LCD Soundsystem, Baby Rose and Tears For Fears.

Together, Together launched in May 2026 with 67 shows across seven cities: Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Melbourne and Sydney.

Following completed performances in Amsterdam, London, São Paulo and Mexico City, Styles is currently in the midst of a record-breaking 30-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden, marking his only US performances of 2026.

Harry confirmed he would be adding more shows to his Together, Together tour and will continue performing into next year on Wednesday night.

He emailed fans with a ‘message from Harry’ to share the news that he will be adding ‘more cities’ after his current run of gigs comes to an end.

He will then head to Australia to perform four nights in Melbourne before wrapping up with two final shows in Sydney.

Fans were led to believe that this would be the end of Harry’s tour, which supports his latest album, Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.

However, he has now announced it will not be the end, which he admitted was something he initially found ‘daunting’. 

Sending fans an email in the early hours of Thursday, Harry wrote: ‘When we decided to do the 2026 tour I knew it would be special but what you turned it into was far beyond what I could have imagined.

‘I love playing music, I love being with all of you and being a part of the love and joy you all create together every night. That’s why I wanted you to be the first to know we will be adding 2027 dates, which  honestly at first I found daunting.

‘Being an artist is the only life I’ve ever known really, I have been doing this since I was 16 years old, and I feel like the luckiest person in the world to still be sharing these moments with you.’

Revealing that the dates will be announced later that day, he said: ‘Tomorrow’s announcement will be the final cities of Together, Together.’

The next part of Harry’s message concerned fans, as he hinted he may step away from music when the tour does finally end. 

He said: ‘After that, I don’t know what comes next for me, but l know that I’m excited to find out. I can’t wait for us all to keep dancing with our friends. I hope to see you there. Thank you for coming out to see us, and for all the love and support you’ve given me over the years.’

Fans are still slowly piling into the arena 30 minutes ahead of showtime.

There are strict security checks with full body scanners and prohibited items including brollies and booze being taken off concert goers on arrival.

Lucky night one ticket-holders have dressed up for the occasion in Celine t-shirts, brightly coloured outfits and LOTS of glitter. Many fans braving teetering high heels in homage to the fashionista queen.

Pints of beer will set you back 10 Euros inside, a glass of wine 8 euros and a flute of champagne 12 euros. Soft drinks are 5 euros a glass.

Those wanting to splash out, can treat themselves to a memento of a ‘goblets collector, plastic cup for 4 euros.

Anthony Hutton, from County Durham, became a household name in 2005 when he won the sixth series of Big Brother.

He beat Eugene Sully in the final and won the programme’s £50,000 prize.

Consett-born Hutton was 23 when he won, becoming one of the series’ most recognisable housemates in a colourful cast packed with drama.

His win thrust him into celebrity life overnight.

Mr Hutton, now 43, was given a quarter of a million pounds worth of publicity almost immediately after leaving the house, highlighting the extraordinary level of attention surrounding the show at the time.

Like many reality television contestants, Hutton found that life after the programme was very different from life before it.

He regularly appeared on television and experienced the impact fame had on his mental health.

In an interview, Hutton said he had experienced suicidal feelings after the sudden change in his circumstances.

His story has since moved well beyond the Big Brother house.

Anthony later opened Mr Hutton’s Barbers and Bar in Darlington, combining a daytime barbershop with a cocktail bar in the evenings.

He said the barber’s chair became a place where customers naturally opened up about their lives and struggles, with conversations often revealing how many men were dealing with their mental health.

Hutton later launched the Throw In The Towel Project to challenge stigma around men’s mental health and suicide.

Through the project, he shares his experiences, runs free men’s mental-health retreats and encourages people to talk while walking, exercising or sitting in a barber’s chair.

The project’s official website describes its message as one of resilience, continuing to fight and “never giving up”

He has also made occasional television appearances, including a reflective interview about his journey on Steph’s Packed Lunch in 2022.

Today, Hutton encourages men to speak honestly about their wellbeing.

The Big Brother winner now uses his experience to help men speak openly, build support networks and feel less alone.

Celine Dion was overcome with emotion as she made her stage comeback in Paris on Saturday night for the beginning of her five-week residency. 

The singer, 58, who looked incredible in a strapless ruffled black dress, wiped away tears as she made her entrance to an estimated 30,000 fans at the La Plenitude Arena. 

It marks her first run of concerts since she was forced to cancel the remainder of her Courage world tour in 2023 due to a debilitating battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder causing severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.

Celine has performed just two brief times since announcing her SPS diagnosis. 

But on Saturday, the singer fulfilled her dream as she sang once again in front of her fans, in what is a remarkable feat after months of a gruelling training regime.

In homage to the star, fans, known as ‘the red heads’, set up a special candy apple stand in reference to an apple tree statement they made when she revealed her health battle. 

Fans said at the time: ‘We’re not here for the apple, we’re here for the tree,’ meaning they care more about her health and wellbeing than her performing and producing hits. 

The songstress appeared touched by the thoughtful gesture and took the time out to talk to them.

Celine’s intense rehabilitation plan has seen her try out new medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy. 

In order to ensure she’s physically able to perform, Celine has been working on her strength with 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week as well as twice-weekly ballet and barre classes.

Her home gym is also decked out with weights, a treadmill and a reformer machine, with Celine revealing her flexibility has increased since she started her new exercise regime. 

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about her new regime, she described it as falling and getting back up repeatedly, adding that she was proud of herself for achieving something that her body wasn’t ‘born to do’.

‘It is a progressive condition,’ she noted. ‘I don’t like to say “disease.” Disease makes you go like this,’ she said, scrunching her nose and saying, ‘”Kevin, you’re such a disease”.’

Celine laid bare the brutality of the condition in her 2024 documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. 

Yet in recent days she has looked in high spirits while out greeting fans in Paris ahead of her shows. 

The residency will see her take to the stage for 16 shows in Autumn 2026 and 10 additional dates in May 2027.

She announced her comeback in March, with tickets instantly selling out.  

Celine was diagnosed with SPS in 2022 after she faced a flare-up in 2020, at the same time as the start of the pandemic.

For three years she isolated from fans, partly motivated by fears her fans would presume she was living a happy, full life yet still cancelling shows. She also developed an appreciation for nature during this time.

‘I love trees so much, and I had this vision of myself trying to disappear through the leaves,’ she said.

The trees were barren as it was autumn, a visual Celine saw as a metaphor for her own struggles.

‘I was trying to tell them, I’m sorry, I don’t have any apples to give you anymore,’ she said, until a voice told her: ‘But we did not come for the apples; we came for the tree.’

The last time Celine performed on stage was in Riyadh. Earlier in the same year she sang at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

She is now ready to get back to work, even the more annoying bits of being a pop star.

‘Well, girl,’ Celine said, addressing herself but speaking to the reporter, ‘if you don’t want to sign autographs and you don’t want to get yourself pretty and you don’t want to be disturbed because your pasta is going to get cold, you can always stay home. But look at what you have.’

The early noughties were a golden era for Bolton nightlife, with queues around the block, dancefloors full until the early hours and fashions that now feel firmly of their time.

Tim Bryan was presented with Volunteer of the Year at a glittering ceremony at York Racecourse on September 10 for the “extraordinary impact” he has had on the branch.

Speaking on the night, Tim said he wanted to dedicate the award to his “beautiful family and wife”, and all those who work tirelessly behind the scenes with the group.

In the five months since Tim was elected as chair, he has made a “real” difference to those living with Parkinson’s in the city, leading with compassion and using his dedication to the group to transform lives.

These gatherings offer information, friendship, and emotional support to those affected by Parkinson’s, and Tim has also played a key role in setting up therapeutic classes designed to improve members’ wellbeing.

In addition to his volunteer work, Tim is a full-time care partner for his wife, Lynette, who also contributes to the group.

His nominator said: “Many people living with Parkinson’s now enjoy greater support, friendship and opportunities because of his efforts.

“Tim embodies the spirit of community pride, and I feel privileged to make this nomination for Volunteer of the Year.”

Pressed as to whether his defenders were his biggest area of concern, Alonso added: “We can do better. We need to know that even when we have the lead, a very important part of the game is to hold together, keep the distances, to go intense in the situations to defend, and I am sure we can do better.

Never did I imagine that at 62, the start of my wrinkly-prune stage of life, I would find myself standing at my back-garden gate wearing flip-flops, a grey onesie and a pair of yellow rubber gloves, directing an immaculately coiffured Thai woman to the footpath into town. 

And worse, that I’d be spotted by a troop of local yummy mummies taking their children the back way into school.

At least it wasn’t as embarrassing as that time a glamorous polo-playing Argentinian came down for breakfast horribly early, holding out a pair of my knickers between finger and thumb and handing them to me in the kitchen. I had dropped them on the stairs on my way to a swift pre-breakfast laundry run.

Time was, I’d be in kitten heels and a designer outfit, Louis Vuitton holdall in hand, for a trip to Barbados, to write up a five-star hotel in my then-role as features and travel editor for Country Life magazine.

 Then I became a B&B hostess in my own home, and my red-carpet lifestyle changed from designer luggage to manning the laundry and occasionally sleeping on the drawing-room floor. 

That’s one of the hazards that come with opening your home to strangers from all over the world. Because no matter who is to blame for overbooking, there’s only one option when all your rooms have been taken and a Parisian couple – the wife heavily pregnant – turn up on your doorstep at midnight insisting they had made a reservation. 

Turn them away into a winter night when there is no other accommodation available around? No way. You have to offer them your own bedroom.

The other time that happened was ten years ago when a particularly elegant middle-aged woman who had enjoyed three days with us asked to stay on a fourth night. 

She was well aware we were fully booked, but such was her charm and engaging personality, somehow familiar but which I couldn’t quite place, that I gave her our room while my husband and I bedded down on the drawing-room carpet once more.

Then there was the guest who arrived just before Covid, paying £100 a night, but stayed for a year, including lockdown, when we charged her just for food and bills. 

She was a non-English-speaking, cigar-smoking Chinese divorcee who arrived in a whirlwind of chaos via a booking from a Beijing agency, ostensibly searching the West Country for an international school for her young daughter. She was clearly wealthy, handling cash like a croupier. 

She owned properties in China the size of Somerset, always dressed in couture and was an inveterate photographer.

Commandeering my husband to drive her around all the local tourist attractions, including a 40-mile round trip to Bath to get a humidor for her Havanas, she took pictures of everything that crossed her path, from the smallest thatched cottage to the grandest cathedral.

But he noticed she also photographed the nearby naval air base, the local mainline railway station and the county police headquarters.

She stayed so long on the grounds that it was apparently ‘difficult’ to get a direct flight back to China. For some reason, I didn’t question it and we began to treat her as one of the family. 

Gradually, though, we noticed she was trying to take over our home, bossing me about to the extent that some mornings I took to hiding under the duvet rather than get up and face her.

On a rare night when all the other rooms were empty, we invited a few friends over for a kitchen supper, only for her to burst into view and claim our Aga for the preparation of one of her expansive Chinese dishes. 

This could not go on and, after a stand-up row, she finally left. When we later mentioned her ever-busy camera to a friend in contact with the security services, he said, ‘Almost certainly, you played host for a year to a Chinese spy.’

To this day I still wonder how I became a B&B hostess, for it crept up on me, in the same way the smell of coffee lures our guests down for breakfast. 

If I had to pinpoint the date it started, it was in 2006 when I was a single mum, moving from that jet-set London life to the small market town of Castle Cary in Somerset with my young son, Jasper, now 28. I wanted him to grow up attending a country school in the West Country, where I myself had partly grown up. To help pay the bills, I took in lodgers. From there I moved to Airbnb hosting.

It was only when I met my husband, Martin, a local businessman, that I felt emboldened to run a full-on, old-fashioned guest house. 

He is the perfect front-of-house partner, with an infectious affability that bestows a glowing welcome on visitors the moment they enter the hallway, and makes them feel one of the family by the time they have come down for breakfast the next morning.

Many guests look up at us fondly from the breakfast table, saying, ‘This is what I can imagine doing when I retire’. However, I can’t stress enough about the strains of turning your home into a business.

Suddenly, your sanctuary becomes public property, every nook and cranny poked into by strangers, your personal possessions on show to the world and your space invaded at every turn. You’re on call round the clock, sheet-changing is a constant chore, and our washing machine is endlessly breaking down under the strain.

It’s also a precarious business proposition. Bookings vary violently. From affluent weeks of having to turn people away can come nail-biting days of waiting for the phone to ring.

And guests are not always grateful. An apparently jovial Dutch couple were stern-faced when they came down for breakfast and demanded a 50 per cent reduction in their bill unless we wanted them to post a hostile review online.

There was nothing wrong with their room, they were just trying their luck, so we called their bluff and refused. 

Then there were the four young women who booked two double rooms but on arrival all four decided to share the same bed. So they were only willing to pay for one room. They were not even the worst offenders. Once we had an entire family of 11 turn up having booked just one room.

For every guest like that, though, there are dozens who restore your faith in humanity. Most people who come through our door are lovely – but it’s easy to forget that when the bad ones make such better stories.

A former senior Conservative MP stayed with us once and, in trying to force open a sash window in his top-floor room, he managed to dislodge the whole thing from its setting and send the glass crashing down on to the terrace. 

Thank god no one was actually on the terrace at the time. The former minister offered no contribution to cover the repairs, but his secretary finally did afterwards.

There also seems to be no dress code for people staying at a B&B.

We’ve had gentlemen turn up in black tie and women in full evening dress en route to a local wedding; tattooed Hells Angels heading for a music festival; and novice nuns returning from an obscure religious convention. 

The most unexpected, though, was the visitor who went to bed as an immaculate businessman and came down for breakfast dressed as a voluptuous woman. The other guests never raised their eyes from their scrambled eggs. We merely asked what name to put on the receipt.

However, by far the most glamorous of our guests was the elegant woman who wanted that extra night. I felt I should recognise her but couldn’t quite place her face. She had registered under her married name, so there was no clue. 

But as she was leaving, there was something about her that made me blurt out, ‘Did anyone ever tell you that you look just like Twiggy?’ To my eternal embarrassment, she gave me a gracious smile and replied, ‘I am Twiggy. Thank you for having me.’

How many people can claim to have shared their bed with a supermodel? My husband does – frequently.
